Today's conversation is the kind that lingers long after you've hit pause. I had the absolute joy of interviewing Laura Bush, a fellow dermatology PA with over 34 years of experience in medicine (yes, you read that right—three decades-plus!). Laura started her career in emergency medicine (Grady ER!!) before eventually making her way to derm, and her story is a masterclass in career pivots, personal growth, and learning how to listen to the quiet voice inside that says, “It's time for something different.”In this episode, we talk about more than just burnout—we talk about life burnout. You know, the kind that sneaks up when your work is demanding, your personal life is stretched thin, and even the good things (like leadership roles and committee work) start draining you. Laura's story reminds us that burnout is rarely about a single factor. It's more like a cocktail of stress, overwhelm, and disconnection from what used to light you up.She shares how she went from running toward every opportunity (sound familiar, anyone?) to learning to pause, tune in, and make decisions from a place of clarity—not panic. We also dive into:Why the grass isn't always greener—sometimes it's just different grassHow to build a team you trust, even when you're tempted to go it aloneWhat it means to choose happiness, and how mindset really is medicineThe importance of learning to say “no” when your bandwidth is maxed outCONNECT WITH LAURA: LinkedInInstagramemail: laurapbush@gmail.com CONNECT WITH HOPE:BOOK:Healing Clinician Burnout, How to Revive Your Life and Career (available in ebook and paperback)CONNECT/COACHING:August Masterclass Series (starts 8/13)Hope's Website: www.coachhopecook.comHope's IG @coachhopecookHope's FB @hopeallencookHope's LinkedIn: hope-cook-56041283/Hope's YouTube @coachhopecookEmail: hope.cook@gmail.comLove y'all, and remember: There's always hope!
After weeks of brutal combat, relentless bombardment, and fierce resistance, the Japanese momentum on Guam finally collapsed. In this episode, we explore how a seemingly unstoppable Japanese counterattack quickly unraveled, leaving scattered, leaderless troops desperately hiding in caves and jungle ravines. Cooks, clerks, and engineers stepped boldly into the breach. Ahead lay brutal struggles for Orote Peninsula, the strategic town of Sumay, and vital airfields that symbolized Guam's liberation. ************* Visit HistoryoftheMarineCorps.com to subscribe to our newsletter, explore episode notes and images, and see our references. Do you ever feel like your work, whether it's swinging a hammer, chasing deadlines, or just mowing the lawn, lacks purpose? Welcome to Day 20 of our Lenten Reflections series, where we unpack St. Joseph as the "Model of Workers." This isn't about a corner office or a fat paycheck; it's about a carpenter with calluses who taught Jesus how to work with his hands and turned sweat into worship. Joseph didn't just clock in. He sanctified every task, from shaping wood to shaping the Savior, showing us that labor can be love, duty, and a middle finger to the devil who hates honest effort. We'll dig into how Jesus learned this trade in Nazareth, prepping for Gethsemane, and how Jason Craig's Leaving Boyhood Behind ties it to a boy's shift from mom to dad. Today's challenge: pick one task big (like your job) small (like doing the dishes) and do it well. Offer it to God. Hit play to see how Joseph's example can flip your grind into glory, no matter what you do.Referenced Products/BooksLeaving Boyhood Behind: Reclaiming Catholic Brotherhood by Jason CraigPowerful Quotes"Work isn't drudgery. It's love, it's duty. It can be an act of worship to God." "St. Joseph wasn't flashy, right? He was faithful though. He wasn't after applause, he was after providing for his family through the purpose that God gave him." "Maximizing your potential, gentlemen, sometimes means that you're not maximizing your spiritual life with God."Offer your work to God today. Take one task, do it with heart, and sanctify it—because even the smallest job can echo eternity when it's for Him.Send us a text Support the showPlease prayerfully consider supporting the podcast on our Buy Me A Coffee page. to help grow the show to reach as many men as possible! The episode offers valuable insights into job seeking, negotiation, and presenting oneself effectively in the tech industry.Top Takeaways:The Importance of Staying True to Yourself in Job Searches: The panel emphasizes that not every job or company is a good fit for everyone. It's more important to be authentic and align with roles that reflect your values and personality rather than trying to conform to something you're not. However, desperation during challenging times can complicate this, making it harder to prioritize alignment over necessity.Every Job is a Learning Experience: Even if you accept a role that isn't ideal, you can use it as a stepping stone. Challenging or mismatched experiences still offer valuable lessons about what to look for (or avoid) in the future, help grow your skillset, and shape your career trajectory.Shifting Hiring Trends and Perceptions: The job market's expectations are constantly changing. For example, job-hopping is more accepted in tech compared to other industries, and long tenures at one company are sometimes viewed as stagnation. Different generations and industries value different qualities, making it crucial to stay adaptable and aware of trends in your field.Mentioned In The Show:Liquid WebOmnisendCorey Maass' Portfolio

Are you getting paid what you're worth? That was actually a trick question because there's absolutely no way for you to know exactly what you're worth. You're worth is dependent on what someone else is willing to pay for you at this exact moment in time. You are like a stock, a house, or anything else whose value is determined by someone else's desires, needs, challenges, and other factors which you know very little about. Even though your daily worth is a mystery, there are ways to determine what a potential employer feels you are worth—today. Wouldn't you know it? I have a video to help you better understand how to discover this. Inside, you'll hear me say funny stuff like, “Salary negotiation is not a transactional event. You do not win a salary negotiation. What you do… is from the time you send a cover letter and a resume or apply online or boss hunt […] from that moment with everything you do and everything you say and everything you don't do and everything you don't say until the time you counter their job offer […] that's the negotiation.” Gimme 17 minutes and 43 seconds of your life. Today I am thrilled to welcome onto the show Sophia Wennstedt, Co-Founder & CEO of Blip Energy. At Blip, Sophia and her team are on a mission to redefine home batteries to increase energy resilience for both individuals and communities. By designing a product to work without typical installation constraints, Blip Energy is able to add millions of otherwise-inaccessible homes to the smart grid network. Sophia's team is set on finding new ways to manage energy demand, while ensuring that energy stability is an option for all of us, not just folks who can afford a luxury system. It's a lofty mission, but Sophia and her team have the background to make it happen, drawing on experience working as a Mechanical Engineer and later as Program Manager at iRobot, before pivoting into the energy space with work at Exelon and Tesla. All of this is rooted in Sophia's passion for climate justice and energy equity, which she's demonstrated through active involvement driving STEM education outreach. It's a field that's rife with innovation and opportunity, and I can't wait to pick Sophia's brain on what's in store for her team and the industry in the new year. For the past 20 years he's been exploring a worldview that seeks to discern God's voice in all things: the Bible and creation (i.e. the arts, sport, science, film, music, literature, history, mathematics, nature and human nature). His first book, The Day Metallica Came to Church: Seeing the Everywhere God in Everything (2010), listens for God's whispers in pop culture. His second book, Every Job a Parable; What Walmart Greeters, Nurses and Astronauts tell us about God (2017), listens for God's words at work. His latest book is God Speaks Science (2023). You can't prepare for the unknown, but what you can do, says Find Your Dream Job guest Karla Rockhold, is prepare for what you do know. Karla recommends preparing a 30 to 90-second elevator pitch to answer the “tell me about yourself” query that usually opens the interview. Do your homework to prepare for the middle part of the interview, and end strong with your own set of questions for the interviewer.
