We had the pleasure of interviewing Silent Planet over Zoom video!Every once in a while, wildflowers will sprout en masse in the middle of the California desert. Known as a “SUPERBLOOM,”this phenomenon paints lush colors across a traditionally arid and barren landscape. The emergence and evolution of Silent Planet mirrors this phenomenon. Since 2009, the California quartet—Garrett Russell [vocals, guitar], Mitchell Stark [guitar], Alex Camerena [drums], and Nick Pocock [bass]—have set themselves apart in the realm of heavy music. Amplifying hypnotic hooks across alternately raw and rich soundscapes steeped in hardcore, post-rock, metal, and ambient textures, the award-winning group has generated tens of millions of streams and earned tastemaker praise. Now, the musicians tell a story as massive as their sound on their aptly titled fifth full-length offering, SUPERBLOOM [Solid State Records].Silent Planet has consistently transfixed a diehard fanbase. The group dropped a string of acclaimed albums, including The Night God Slept [2014], Everything Was Sound [2016], When The End Began [2018], and Iridescent [2021]—which Hysteria hailed as “a vulnerable and emotional LP.” Not to mention, album standout “Trilogy” generated 5.3 million Spotify streams to sit alongside their genre-bending triumph “Panic Room” from the 2016 release, currently at 5 million. The guys notably took home “Best Underground Band” at the 2017 Alternative Press Music Awards and toured with the likes of Motionless In White, August Burns Red, Beartooth, and The Contortionist.Over the course of two years, they recorded what would become SUPERBLOOM in Woodland Hills, CA alongside longtime producer and frequent collaborator Daniel Braunstein. A jarring turn of events split the process into two seasons. Trekking through a Wyoming snowstorm in November 2022, Silent Planet survived a vehicle accident. The van flipped over, leaving the group laying in the wreckage of a bitter Wyoming snowstorm as Garrett was hospitalized with a fractured back and head wound requiring stitches.Along the way, they settled on a conceptual framework, expanding the scope of their vision like never before.Silent Planet initially teased the record with “:Signal:” followed by “Antimatter.” On the latter, spacey electronic transmissions buzz. Pivoting on a dime, it dissolves into a stomping industrial groove offset by synth swells.“It's the conclusion of the story we're telling,” he says. “This is the finale. There are different levels of a close encounter. It's a close encounter of the fifth kind. It's the destination of the music.”In the end, Silent Planet continues to elevate and uplift heavy music to another dimension. We want to hear from you! Ah, love… Specifically true love. Soul mates even! Is there anything better? Yes, both of you being alive is a plus! That is just the predicament Joe Fisher found himself in, the love of his life (17 lifetimes to be exact) was a spirit guide from the metaphysical realm he could only talk to through a channeller. Talk about awkward date nights. But Joe was up for a challenge, after all he was England's youngest newspaper editor at 22 and an accomplished investigative reporter turned author, so no problem! Unless you count the wild-goose chase he goes on to prove the existence of the afterlife, the public ridicule he receives for his beliefs, and the downward spiral his life goes down culminating in a death some say was at the hands of said spirits. It's a heck of a story so we enlist the help of another author who makes his triumphant return to H51, Mr. Dan Kozuh. Is reincarnation real? Can spirits commit murder? Why is Brent a master of dialects??? We take a swing at answering those and many more questions this week on Hysteria 51. About Daniel Kozuh Daniel Kozuh is a comedy writer living in Atlanta by way of Chicago. As a screenwriter Daniel has been commissioned by several film and television production companies. His short films have shown at festivals and his science-fiction play ‘Adipocere' was produced by LiveWire Chicago Theatre. His last short film ‘Late Again' played at the Terminus Film Festival. He has also written for the Alternative Press Music Awards, Metal Insider, SFWeekly, among others. Currently, Daniel writes for the music satire site The Hard Times and its “nerd culture” sister site The Hard Drive, where he has published over 150 articles. One of his articles was adapted into the short film ‘Caravan of Cannibals' that screened at 2018 Atlanta Underground Film Festival and the 2018 Atlanta Horror Film Festival. His headlines have been featured in The Los Angeles Daily News and Billboard Magazine. Daniel has performed with the acclaimed storytelling series The Moth, winning their monthly StorySlam and performing at their yearly GrandSlam. As well as working with PAVE-Promoting Awareness Victim Empowerment, the musician BESTMAN, and various nonprofit theater groups. The podcasts Hysteria 51, Name Redacted, POD Minutes to CASTnight, and Earth Station One have also had Daniel on as a guest. In April of 2019, Daniel's first novel LINGERIA: Book One of One was published. It is a humorous fantasy story about an author discovering that the world of his famous fantasy novels is real and he is revered by its characters as their god and creator. As one reviewer put it, “It is Lord of the Rings meets Hitchhikers' Guide,” as another said, “It's like George R.R. Martin New Nightmare's himself.” Special thanks to this week's research sources: Books by Joe Predictions (1980) The Case for Reincarnation (1984, revised edition 2012) Life Between Life (1988) Hungry Ghosts (1990) Cotopaxi Visions: Travels in Ecuador (1992) Game Wardens: Men and Women in Conservation (1992) The Siren Call of Hungry Ghosts: A Riveting Investigation Into Channeling and Spirit Guides (2001) Videos Supernatural Investigator S1, E4 & E5 - https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1506848/?ref_=tt_ov_inf CBC Crossfire 1989 Beyond The Grave Websites Joe Fisher Wiki - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joe_Fisher_(journalist) The Anomalist - https://www.anomalist.com/milestones/fisher.html Xenoglossy - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Xenoglossy  University of Manitoba Joe Fisher Archive - https://umanitoba.ca/libraries/units/archives/collections/complete_holdings/ead/html/fisher.shtml Support the show: https://www.patreon.com/Hysteria51 See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Throughout a catalog streamed nearly half-a-billion times and highlighted by two gold albums, two gold singles, and a platinum single, today’s guests perennially raised the bar for both pop and punk. Since 2003, the group notched five straight Top 10 entries on the Billboard Top 200, spanning the gold-certified Nothing Personal [2009], Dirty Work [2011], Future Hearts [2015], and Last Young Renegade [2017]. The latter attracted tastemaker acclaim from the likes of Rolling Stone, Paste, and more as the band canvassed the world, headlining arenas on three continents. 2019 saw them celebrate Nothing Personal with a string of sold-out shows and a re-recorded liveperformance of the album at RedBull Studios. The record’s influence remained prevalent with Rock Sound citing its impact on Fall Out Boy, 5 Seconds of Summer, and more. Along the way, they achieved honors such as “Album of the Year” at both the Alternative Press Music Awards for Dirty Work and Rock Sound Awards for Last Young Renegade. After nearly two decades together, they rekindled the spark they first ignited in a Baltimore basement on their 2020 eighth full-length studio album, Wake Up, Sunshine [Fueled By Ramen]. These four lifelong friends—Alex Gaskarth [lead vocals, guitar], Jack Barakat [lead guitar, backing vocals], Zack Merrick [bass, backing vocals], and Rian Dawson [drums]—walked into a tiny room, plugged in, and turned up with the same spirit, but a little more wisdom, a lot more experience, and proficiency gained by performing to millions worldwide. As a result, they delivered a dynamic body of work at the apex of pop punk prowess, rock energy, and genre-busting adventurousness. This weeks I chat with an incredible human being named, Cassie Wilson! Cassie is an accessibility activist and musical entrepreneur who runs the online music reviewing site, Sick Snaps, as well as the nonprofit, Half Access. We chat about music, Taco Bell, being from Oregon and the greater purpose of Cassie's work in the scene today. Half Access is a program that gives disabled music fans a voice in accessibility issues and ableism at concert venues through a database of music venues and its accessibility needs and issues, while also developing ways to help venues improve their practices. Having recently turned 19 (HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!), she is already making a major name for herself as the recipient of a $10,000 grant from Hopeless Records and Sub City. She was flown to Cleveland to receive the award in front of thousands of people and musicians she admires at the Alternative Press Music Awards! EPISODE NOTES (for full links, visit CraigBidiman.com/edupunxpod): - A lot of bands get hyped in this episode, check out tunes from Grizzly, Speak Low If You Speak Love, From Indian Lakes, and Owel. - You can learn more about Cassie's nonprofit, Half Access, by visiting HalfAccess.org - make sure to check out the venue database and reach out so that you can help her chronicle music venue accessibility across the country and WORLD! - Dan Campbell from The Wonder Years presented Cassie with her APMA award - you can check out the video and article HERE! You can also learn more about the Hopeless Records/Subcity grant she won! - Sick Snaps, Cassie's first project, featured my first single back in May, and it was a wonderful way to connect with my home audience in the Pacific Northwest! Be sure to check out more of Sick Snaps' work and all of the great tunes they feature. - Cassie's favorite record labels today are Hopeless Records and Triple Crown Records - both are putting nothing but incredible bands! - If you haven't heard the new album from The Maine, Cassie's favorite band of all time, you should get on that! I just did and I really enjoyed it. - But currently Cassie is all about A Will Away, Tigers Jaw, and Paramore. - In fact, Cassie's top album this year so far is “After Laughter,” by Paramore. MUSIC NOTES: - This week's music sponsor is Spartan Records - you can hear more tunes from their bands at SpartanRecords.com!  - The intro/outro/break song is "Atom Smasher," from the new Young Fox album, "Sky Beats Gold." I love the album - have the orange/brown/white tri-color with black haze vinyl pressing. It's gorgeous. - Our featured track is "Monsters Among Men," from the new American Opera album, "Small Victories." It's a fabulous new wave Americana record with ridiculous artwork and some really cool stories! Check out the full album now! - As an added bonus, click here to check out an in-depth interview with John from American Opera. ADVERTISING NOTES: - This week's HYPE of the week goes out to one of Cassie's projects, Sick Snaps!
