This week we welcome Spurs defender Ben Davies to the show. One of the Premier League's most experienced current players with nearly 300 top flight appearances for Tottenham and Swansea, he has also won 86 caps for Wales. But there is much more to Ben than just the footballer. We couldn't go through this chat without getting the inside track on his 10 years at Spurs and winning trophies with his boyhood club Swansea. However, alongside this, it's a wider conversation on the current footballing landscape. The finances of a footballer and how they're reported, his perspective on VAR, working with Pochettino, Mourinho, Conte, Rodgers, and the impact to a team of losing big players like Harry Kane, it's a current players open and honest perspective of the business of football. Footballers often get a bad rep. If you want to see the other side of what players are like, listen to this. On today's show we discuss: Managers and leadership: Pochettino, Conte, Mourinho - what are the traits that make the best managers special and what resonated most with Ben? How do dressing rooms respond to managerial change? Can you afford to get attached to circumstance and personnel when things can change overnight? The importance of experience in a dressing room to demonstrate the consistency and best practice required to succeed at the top level. The value of having something to focus on outside of football makes you a better player and teammate. The perspective of the player: What's it like to be transferred? How the process unfolds and how involved are players in the decision making? VAR - what do players think of it? A valuable correction tool or passion killer on and off the pitch? Management structures in clubs and the roles of directors of football, chief executives, and heads of recruitment. The importance of a trustworthy and capable inner circle. Increasing exposure: Media pressure and the expectations on moderns footballers to meet preconceived expectations. Does this social media world help or hinder players? The creation of new opportunity can also lead to a refocusing of time away from the pitch? Amazon All or Nothing: what did the Spurs dressing room think of having the cameras on them 24/7? How the demands of a professional still leave you with time to focus on other interests leading to Ben's opportunity for academic success. JEREMY NIEBOER was educated at Harrow School and Oriel College Oxford. After a period practising as a member of the Bar in Kings Bench Walk he was later admitted as a solicitor becoming a partner in two City law firms. He specialised in corporate work, including mergers and acquisitions, capital market public offerings, private equity transactions and commercial law. Hestill acts for a few long-standing clients. His first encounter with any challenge to the accepted doctrine of ‘global warming' came through his contact with Christopher Booker, whom Jeremy first met when acting as lead solicitor on the application by Lord Rees-Mogg to restrain ratification of the Maastricht Treaty. Christopher himself published his essential work The Real Global Warming Disaster in 2009. Just at the time of its publication, there was a public meeting in Church House addressed by Professor Plimer in which he succinctly set out the fundamental scientific flaws of alleged CO2 driven global warming. It was this that set Jeremy on a path of enquiry and research. Jeremy has since spoken at numerous meetings as to the want of any tenable scientific basis forthe vast proposed expenditure on the folly of de-carbonisation. He published his first booklet on climate alarmism with the Bruges Group in 2010, A Lesson in Democracy, and has been a leadspeaker at public meetings and debates on the subject. Did you buy a Peloton in the lockdown? I know a couple of people that did. I nearly did. I certainly looked at them online and lusted after one. But then I didn't get round to buying one. Can't remember why not. It might have been the waiting list. It might be because I don't have anywhere to put it…The tech bubble has well and truly burstA Peloton, by the way, is an indoor exercise bike that comes with an app with loads of classes built in, so you can have someone shout at you while you cycle. They do treadmills and things as well.Peloton Interactive (Nasdaq:PTON) was one of the go-to stock darlings of the Covid tech boom. It IPO'd in September 2019 at $29 a share. The IPO price was probably a bit high because over the next month the stock fell by a third to $20. It rallied a bit, but at the height of the Covid panic in March 2020 it sunk even lower to $17.Then people like me started wondering how we could exercise during a lockdown. Over the next nine months the stock went up ten times. By January 2021 it was $171. Then it started falling. Yesterday it hit $11.That's a fall of somewhere between 93% and 94%. It's now trading at roughly a third of the IPO price. It can still fall by another 93%.But I still think I want a Peloton. Though where would I put it?Netflix (Nasdaq:NFLX) has gone from $700 in December to $177 yesterday. It's “only” fallen by 75%. But my kids still watch Netflix. I don't. But that's because I'm a stroppy old grinch who doesn't like TV. I can't bear actors with shoddy diction, you see, and there are rather too many of them. They brutalise the language and nobody seems to care (except me). Another example of falling standards.Amazon (Nasdaq:AMZN) has gone from $3,773 to $2,177 yesterday. It's “only” down 43% and it actually makes money. Or so I'm told.Whatever, I still use Amazon ALL the time. The tech bubble has well and truly burst. But tech companies are a lot more real than they were in 2000, last time around. The bursting cannot be blamed on Vladimir Putin and the war in Ukraine, I don't think. It was a speculative bubble and speculative bubbles, even though they can go on much longer than is “rational”, pop. Suppressed interest rates and digital money printers endlessly brr-ing keep them going, but one day they pop.And it's not like these declines are confined to Nasdaq stocks.Over the last week the defi protocol Terra has fallen by over 90% and, in doing so, collapsed the entire bitcoin and cryptocurrency ecosystem. We are deep in the bleak cryptocurrency midwinter and eyes are bleeding.Over in the similarly stupidly speculative sector that is junior mining, pain is apparent across the board. Markets are puking. Selfies of speculators now seeking work at McDonald's abound. The bearish factors at play are obvious - the war in Ukraine, rising geopolitical tension, inflation, interest rates that don't reflect inflation, fear that interest rates will soon have to reflect inflation, and the likely popping of the global debt bubble.Ukraine aside, these aren't anything new, it's just now they all seem to matter, when previously they didn't.Where can you hide? Bonds are tanking, stocks are tanking, commodities are tanking, precious metals are tanking, crypto is tanking, even cash is tanking – in that it's losing 10% of its purchasing power every year.Well, that last point may be true, but during a global margin call, cash suddenly starts to look valuable. The good thing about bear markets is that they don't last forever. I don't know when this one will end, but it will end, eventually. At a certain point, real businesses with cash flow are going to look very attractive - if they don't already. The secret I guess is to look around at all those companies you wanted to buy when times were good. Have they changed? No? Well, now's your chance to pick them up at a discount. When TVs and computers are on sale, people queue overnight round the block to get their bargains. When stocks are on sale, everybody panics and sells. The lesson is to always keep some cash in reserve for times like this. The problem is you spend it when you think something is cheap. It falls by more and you don't have any cash left to buy it when it is cheaper.Gosh these markets are difficult. The sheer speed of the declines over the last month have been extraordinary. Are we at peak panic yet? I can see lots of opportunities out there. But I don't think we are quite at the final flush point yet. But I dare say we are not that far away. This would seem to be a bear market of the grinding variety. Far more painful than the short and sharp crash-boom variety we saw during Covid.Stay safe! Awful expression, but I guess in this case it means don't use too much leverage. This is a public episode. Blind Man's Buff by Herbert Russell WakefieldH R Wakefield was born in 1888 in Sandgate, Kent, England and died 1964. He was the son of the Bishop of Birmingham. He was educated at the prestigious Marlborough College and then went to Oxford University where he studied history and played cricket, golf, hockey and football. He was secretary to Viscount Northcliffe and served with the Royal Scots Fusiliers when the First World War broke out and was promoted to Captain. After 1920 he settled in London and worked as chief editor in a publishing house. His wife was American, Barbara Standish Waldo, and he met her when she was in London as her family were wealthy and took a house in London each year for the season. He divorced her in 1936 and married again in 1946. Older now, during the Second World War he served as an air-raid warden. H R's brother Gilbert was a successful playwright. Wakefield was famous for his ghost stories during his life. He published seven volumes of ghost stories during his life. His work was appreciated by August Derleth, H P Lovecraft's disciple and some of his stories were published in Weird Tales. His main influences were M R James and Algernon Blackwood (both of whom we have featured on the podcast.) The poet laureate John Betjeman considered Wakefield in the second rank of ghost story writers after M R James, which was praise indeed. However, M R James wasn't as fond of Wakefield's work. H P Lovecraft on the other hand showered Wakefield in praise and said he reached the heights of horror. Wakefield strongly believed in the paranormal, and it is perhaps because of this he was drawn to write in this field. He claimed to have had personal experiences of supernatural phenomena. This story, Blind Man's Buff, plays on the primal fear of the dark and what might lurk within. In that play on phobia it struck me that it was similar to Marghatina Laski's The Tower, which we read as Episode 13 (https://player.captivate.fm/episode/6682b629-19d6-4cff-ab73-24a1ed629ab8) Tony's Ghost Story BooksMy latest book, London Horror Stories is available on Amazon US (https://amzn.to/2NgZHQu). Elias And The DraugI got this tale from Roald Dahls' Book of Ghost Stories (https://amzn.to/31BmIUU)which is a very well-curated collection. Often, ghost stories collections are just a rehash of the same old tired stories, but Roald Dahl put some goodies in this one. Of course, Dahl was of Norwegian descent, so it is perhaps natural he should include a Norwegian writer. This story Elias And The Draug was published in 1870. Of course, the 19th Century was a time of a revival in traditional folk stories, often Germanic such as Hans Andersen and the Brothers Grimm, and often very grim. This story is a horror story, absolutely, and a ghost story in that it features a supernatural creature, a resident of faerie, the draug. And in its style, it is definitely akin to fairytales which are one of the sources of the ghost story form. Jonas Lie was born at Hokksund in Norway in 1833, and he died in 1905. he is considered to be one of the four greats of Norwegian literature. His father was appointed sheriff of Tromsø which is a very northern part of Norway with chunks of the region within the Arctic circle. This area has a rich Sámi heritage, and we note the reference to the Lapp girl in the story whom the surviving child Brendt marries and settles down, never going to sea again. Lie wanted to go in the navy, but his eyesight was so weak he never succeeded in going to sea professionally. Instead, he became a lawyer, which was probably more lucrative. He went to University in Christiania and got to know the Norwegian playwright Henrik Ibsen and Bjornsterne Bjornson, another famous Norwegian author less known outside Norway than Ibsen. He published his first novel in 1870, Den Fremsynte, which like much of his work focuses on Norwegian life, the traditions and folklore and the constant encounter with the sea. Snake in The Attic by Garrett JohnsonGarrett is an English professor in Houston Texas who is married with two boys, and has recently moved house. You now know why. We discussed whether I should do the story in a British or an American accent and we decided that I could do it in my native tones because I could after all have moved to the USA to teach English. It struck me that the supernatural element in the story, of whether the snake is real or a ghost, is secondary. What the story is, is an exploration of fear. Garret confirms this in the interview. In the story we explore various phobias We have the fear of rats, of snakes, of the dark, of finding your child harmed in the night. We talked a little about the deep anxiety that comes from being a parent of young children, or in fact children of any age, as mine are grown up and I still worry about them. In the Snake in the Attic there are also some slice of life elements. The story of the Gandalf type guy wandering around bookshops and sleeping under parks, strikes me as likely to be true observation rather than a figment of writerly imagination. Also, the story of the addiction and the whole exterminator men seems very realistic, but Garret confirms that this episode is made up. I'm still not sure whether the snake was real. He has these physical sensations which don't seem to possibly be from the snake crawling over him, so that leads me to believe, like the exterminators ,that the snake was a figment of his imagination. The musings about whether the snake can follow him, or staying living of black air and dust. And the final sentence, wondering about the new occupier of the house and whether the snake will trouble her seems to suggest the snake is a metaphor for deeper disquiets, something that was hinted at earlier on, that the true haunting arises from within our narrator. Garret Johnson LinksGarret's story can be found at here (http://www.theghoststory.com/?s=rowan+bowman). Garret mentions the work of Wyrd Harvest Press (https://folkhorrorrevival.com/wyrd-harvest-press/).
