Amazing intro/outro music graciously provided courtesy of: The Railsplitters - Check them Out Transcript of this episode: Neil Sattin: Let's just start maybe with you're revealing a little bit of your personal journey, if you don't mind, getting a little vulnerable with, how did 8080 come to be for the two of you? Nate Klemp: Yeah, well, I guess it starts in high school actually, so Kaley and I grew up in the same town, and we met our senior year of high school, we were in chemistry class together, and we actually dated a little bit in high school, and then we both went to the same college, but broke up pragmatically and got back together seven years later, and it was almost like a fairy tale, Instagram-worthy story where we got back together in our early 20s, we got married, and we went into marriage thinking that the momentum of that perfect story, that fairy tale was just going to effortlessly continue and it didn't... Not at all. In fact, a couple of years in the marriage, I had a serious bike accident, which left me in a position of both having very little energy to work and complete Life's tasks, but also in a pretty serious depression, experiencing a lot of anxiety, and all of a sudden we were thrust into this conversation really more of a conflict over What is or isn't fair, and we started to see that for us and for most couples, we saw eventually that the fundamental thing we were grappling with is how can we be equals and in love, and that seemed to be a totally vexing question that we just could not answer in our marriage. So we really spent the then 15 years, we've been married for almost 16 years now, trying to answer that question, both for ourselves and then with this book for other couples. Neil Sattin: Yeah, and when you talk about how to be equals and be in love, that makes me think of what you mentioned in the initial part of your book where you talk about moving from what you call the 80/20 model of relationship into 50/50 relating, and then of course. You're making a case for the 80/80 model of relating. So yeah, can you describe what we're talking about, just kind of in simple terms, what's a 80/20 relationship... What's a 50/50 relationship? And where are we headed with 80/80? Kaley Klemp: 80/20 is looking back at sometimes our parents, sometimes our grandparents, where one person's "job" is to take care of the relationship and the other person gets to kind of coast, and in 80/20, based on gender norms at the time, typically it's the woman who's responsible for making sure that we're close and that we have date night, and that we have friends, and really, it's her job to make sure that the relationship is working at all, and as easy as it is to look at that with condemnation or disdain, there was an advantage at that point in time, which was, they were at least on the same team, pointed in the same direction, because they were really, really interdependent. Kaley Klemp: What happened though is as the '60s and '70s occur and women were given a lot more opportunity to work outside the home and pursue their own interests, there started to be a big shift where each person could look at 80/20 and say, "Gosh, that seems wildly unfair." And it was... And so they said, "You know what, we can do better. Let's make things even between us, let's make things equal, and the clunky technology was, Let's make things fair." And so that's where 50/50 came from, this idea that if we each do perfectly equal amounts of things, then somehow we'll end up in marital bliss, unfortunately, and we can talk about all the reasons why. 50/50 ended up being a recipe for even more fighting and even more conflict because finding that perfect midpoint where it was exactly fair seemed completely elusive. And so what we're striving for and arguing for is this notion of 80/80, where rather than keeping score and keeping track like you do in 50/50, instead you intentionally strive to overshoot the mean to do more than your "fair share" from this mindset of generosity. And with that new mindset, with this intentionality around how can I show up with generosity with my partner, what are the structures that support it, how can we take that mindset and make it really practical so that in real life, we can actually live it... Gino has been an entrepreneur since the age of 21 and he always had an obsession for learning what makes businesses thrive. After taking over and transforming his family business at the age of 25, Gino then set out to help business leaders achieve their goals. Based on his years of real-world experience, he created the Entrepreneurial Operating System (EOS), a practical method for helping companies achieve greatness. According to his new book, there are six traits that every entrepreneur needs in order to be successful: visionary, passionate, problem-solver, driven, risk-taker, and responsible. Gino wrote this book in three parts: confirm, glimpse and path. There is a psychology and a reason behind that linear approach: confirm is about confirming whether or not you have those six essential traits, glimpse is about showing you a glimpse of all the possibilities, and path is about showing you a path to greatly increase your odds of success. We continue our discussion about Gino's book, but we move onto the characteristics of entrepreneurs. The characteristics of an entrepreneur are different than the six essential traits and Gino uses more of what he calls the 80% rule, meaning you don't have to have 100% of these characteristics but you should have most of them. Some of these characteristics are: idea generator, dreamer, earner, curious, always thinking about the future, and great strategic thinker. But also some challenging ones, like: trouble staying focused, get bored easily, disorganized, control freak, perfectionist, not necessarily financially savvy, etc. According to Gino, it is extremely important to know your weaknesses as an entrepreneur, because that allows you to go hire someone to handle all those weaknesses for you. We then discuss the 6th essential skill, which is responsible. One of the ways that Gino explains about being responsible is to blame no one. In Gino's own words: if you're an entrepreneur who owns a building and that building gets hit by a meteor, that was your fault. In other words, a responsible person will say: I chose that building, I built that building, I moved there, that's my fault and this is my problem to solve. And an irresponsible person will blame everyone else for what happened. This is one of the reasons why Gino believes that people are born with these traits and that they can't be taught, and it's nature over nurture. Our next topic is the eight critical mistakes that create a nightmare scenario for entrepreneurs: not having a vision, hiring wrong people, not spending time with your people, not knowing who your customer is, not charging enough, not staying true to your core, not knowing your numbers and not crystalizing roles and responsibilities. In his book, Gino shares countless real-world stories, so that you can see entrepreneurs who were where you are and what they built. We also discuss the importance of mentorship. Having a mentor will get you there faster, but please know that not having a mentor doesn't mean that you're going to fail. A mentor is simply someone who is where you want to be and an opportunity for them to share their wisdom and for you to share your problems, insights, thoughts, questions, challenges, and they can help you because they've experienced all that. Eventually, we discuss the difference between passion and passionate. Passionate is an essential trait, one of the six you must have to be an entrepreneur. What Gino teaches in his book is the vital necessity of a passion, and how to discover your passion. He believes that the number one reason you're going to succeed as an entrepreneur is by having a passion for something. Because as an entrepreneur, you're going to get knocked down often, and the only thing that gets an entrepreneur to pick themselves up and continue to go against all odds is passion. Passion is the thing that keeps you in the game and gives you the energy to continue going forward. We then move on to the topic of eight disciplines to increase your odds of success: clarify your vision, decide if you are a partner person, know that the bigger the problem you solve, the more successful you'll be, get feedback from customers and clients early and often, always have a plan B, work hard, take criticism and doubt with a grain of salt, and see it every night. Gino explains that having a plan B is crucial because plan A is going to change. It's either going to change drastically, or there will be some minor tweaks along the way. And so you've got to be on your toes and know what you're going to do if this plan doesn't work. Lastly, we discuss the importance of capitalizing on coaching, training, and mentoring. Gino shares that in the last 30 years, he has spent an average of 5% of his income on education. He truly believes that knowledge is power and that there are a number of great ways to educate yourself in today's world. The most important thing is to find the right person for you because one coach for one entrepreneur is not a great coach for another entrepreneur, so you have to find your perfect fit. I am truly excited for today’s episode because I am joined by the amazing Gino Wickman! Gino has been an entrepreneur since the age of 21 and he always had an obsession for learning what makes businesses thrive. After taking over and transforming his family business at the age of 25, Gino then set out to help business leaders achieve their goals. Based on his years of real-world experience, he created the Entrepreneurial Operating System (EOS), a practical method for helping companies achieve greatness. The EOS Tools are being used by more than 70,000 companies. He is also the author of the award-winning, best-selling book Traction: Get a Grip on your Business and his newest endeavor, The Entrepreneurial Leap. The mission of Entrepreneurial Leap is to find all of the entrepreneurs-in-the-making, at any age, wherever they are to help them realize their purpose and live the life they were born to live.   We begin the episode with Gino’s background story and how he found his true passion, which is helping other entrepreneurs. After turning his father’s company around and ultimately selling it, he spent the next five years creating the Entrepreneurial Operating System (EOS). He then decided to leverage it by writing a book and building a team of EOS implementers. David Roberts is a multi-award-winning and New York Times best-selling illustrator who has earned great acclaim for his distinctive style. While the world comes together to fight a global pandemic, schools have closed, and the public activities that we are used to experiencing with our children are all off-limits. David joined me to share his insightful thoughts about how to interact with our children during this odd time in our lives. He offered this wonderful piece of advice too: allow your children to lead you with their imagination, and pick up on the points they are giving you about the world and about life. David also shared how he uses thoughtful and constructive feedback in his work, his love of fashion, and the art of storytelling through his illustrations. David was born in Liverpool and studied fashion design at university in Manchester. After graduating, he worked as a milliner and a fashion illustrator but always felt his true calling was in children’s books. David finally realized his dream when his first book was published in 1998, and since then he has collaborated with some of Britain’s finest children’s authors, including Julia Donaldson, Sally Gardner, Philip Ardagh, Jacqueline Wilson, and Andrea Beaty. He is also the creator of the popular Dirty Bertie books (Stripes/Little Tiger Press). His previous work includes collaborations with his sister Lynn on retellings of several classic fairy stories.  Their book Little Red was shortlisted for the 2005 CILIP Kate Greenaway Medal.  In 2006 he won the Nestlé Children’s Book Prize Gold Award for his line drawings in Mouse Noses on Toast (Faber & Faber). Tinder written by Sally Gardner was shortlisted for both the CILIP Kate Greenaway and Carnegie Medals in 2015. Steve Anderson didn’t set out to write a book about Jeff Bezos and Amazon’s astounding track record of cyclical experimentation, failure, experimentation and success. But in his research of strategic future issues for the IIABA Agents Council for Technology, he discovered some lessons for the insurance industry – taken directly from 20 annual shareholder letters written by Bezos. To truly innovate, the industry first needs to take more risk, and the proper sort of risk, Steve says. “In our industry,” he explains, “the core value most would say is, ‘We take care of our customer.’ At Amazon a customer needing to contact them is a failure, not something of value.” Agents should look for self-service options for customers to fix things without contacting the agency. “What can we do to automate, paying attention to when the customer has a problem, and proactively reaching out to the customer and fixing it?” Steve says.
