Arriving in Philadelphia after deejaying in her native New York and Washington D.C., where she was known for a time as “Ebony Moonbeams,” Dyana Williams established the popular radio show “Love on the Menu” for radio station WDAS and later Soulful Sundays for Classix 107.9. The latter show lasting for 12 years before signing off for the last time in 2020. Even with her luminous on-air career, Dyana's contributions behind the scenes have been even more impactful. Formerly married to music producer Kenny Gamble (Gamble & Huff), Williams has long been associated with the “Sound of Philadelphia” (Patti LaBelle, McFadden & Whitehead, Teddy Pendergrass, etc.) and has produced documentaries, founded and led organizations and mentored countless emerging artists, a passion that she continues to pursue. But perhaps her most lasting gift to us is her role in the founding of Black Music Month. Its initial recognition in 1979 was the beginning of a process that Dyana would shepherd until it was written into law by congress and proclaimed first by President Clinton in 2000 and again by Presidents Obama and Biden. Treci Smith is an interior stylist and mother of four who has a love of all things vintage and styling interiors to tell a story. Her deep dives into estate sales, thrift stores and even her clients' own living rooms allow her to showcase rooms in a way that honors the past, while keeping an eye focused on the future. “I'm always interested in the areas in the house where people congregate. I like creating and celebrating warm spaces that encourage conversations,” she says. On this episode of Not a Parenting Podcast, Treci discusses life as a mom and wife, how her family survived the pandemic together, interior styling, and the community she has built with other Black San Diegans. Listen to her episode now and check out her Q&A below: What makes San Diego such a special place to raise kids for you? Our family, friends and community have helped us build a wonderful life for our kids. Additionally, the climate and environment has allowed us to enjoy a natural lifestyle which is important to me and my family. Another added benefit is that San Diego is culturally rich. For instance, enjoying the beauty of Balboa Park while walking across the international border to Mexico. I love how we have gone from Julian (to grab an apple pie) to watching the sunset on Coronado beach. As a result, my kids are very open minded and they approach life with curiosity. After each one of our kids' high school graduations, we chose a different country to visit for our family vacation. What are the greatest joys and challenges of balancing family and a career? For me, the biggest challenge I have faced in balancing career and family is prioritizing my own time and professional needs. On the flip side of that, seeing my family enjoy their own personal success is incredibly rewarding and satisfying, but the truth is there's never an equal balance. I'm a wife and mother first and a business owner second. The identities are not mutually exclusive, but having the discipline to be present, that's always a challenge. What part of your job makes you feel the most fulfilled or alive? I love the hunt. Sourcing my finds in random estate sales and thrift stores is thrilling and provides the inspiration for my designs and projects. Sustainability is a big part of who I am. It's how I live—from my vintage clothing, to how I style for clients, my store, my short term rental and even my own home. You don't have to spend a lot of money to get the look/quality that you're trying to achieve for your space. Anything else you would love for our audience to know about you? I was honored to have my home and family featured in the book APHROCHIC, a book that celebrates the legacy of the Black family home. Being able to see potential in pieces that most people would overlook is like my superpower.

It's a very special episode this week as we welcome Jeanine Hays and Bryan Mason, the brainchild of the husband and wife team behind AphroChic. Their latest release, AphroChic: Celebrating the Legacy of the Black Family Home, is a gorgeous and impactful book that showcases the stories of numerous homes and the in-depth conversations with the residents that celebrate their unique family story. Jeanine and Bryan talk about the inspiration behind the book and how the story of home begins way before we enter the home we're in now. They talk about the decision to create a design book that is also a history book, and the intention of storytelling in a way that is educational, expansive, and entertaining. What You'll Hear on This Episode: Jeanine and Bryan talk about their journey into Aphrochic and their “why” behind the book. The families selected were some designers, but also teachers, chef, writers, and just people with aesthetic and authentic taste. Aphrochic shows that design is so much more than just choosing color and a palette. It's about creating a feeling and sharing your story. The feeling of safety, freedom, and visibility is extremely important in many Black family homes. Jeanine and Bryan talk about their own upbringings and how the feeling of a space impacted them to their adult lives. Jeanine and Bryan talk about working together to write the book even through health challenges. The stories in Aphrochic tell stories of both economic perspectives between Black and white homes and also feature beautiful portraits of resilience and joy. What's a “womb room?” A bit about what's next for Jeanine and Bryan, including their magazine Aphrochic Magazine and a line of products. For too long, the Black family home has been left out of the story of America—a missing character. Authors Jeanine Hays and Bryan Mason felt it was time to write that story. The result is a book that celebrates the beauty, culture and creativity that's always been present, but too often ignored. In this episode we learn: - home is more than a place to live for Black families who have been denied for hundreds of years - the connections we all make to home are deeply powerful - despite imaginary divisions, we all need the same things - for too many Black homeowners, there are still a variety of overt and hidden roadblocks to owning a home - race covenants were a direct path to excluding Black families from home ownership - the Fair Housing Act was enacted in 1968 - today, fewer Blacks own homes than their parents' generation did It's time to take control of your business. Hello listeners, and welcome back to Tech Forward! This week, we're featuring my conversation with Angela Belt, Senior 3D Visual Stylist at Wayfair, from last September. Having graduated from Howard University with a degree in Fine Arts, Angela has over ten years of interior design experience including extensive experience styling for print, online publications, and video.  With a keen eye for what is on trend and a passion for interior design, she has styled shoots for ElleDecor, HGTV, AphroChic, and Maison et Objet in Paris. We discussed her transition into the world of tech through her role at Wayfair, and the initiatives she has championed to support the company’s diversity recruiting efforts. Though she initially saw herself forging a career in politics, Angela took a hard pivot into the world of art and design during her sophomore year of college. After graduation, she took a position with the furniture company Room and Board, which essentially served as a ten-year crash course on not only floor planning and drafting, but also everything required in terms of building codes and permits, and how to design a room with an eye for profit margins. Angela also spent 8 of those 10 years freelancing at her sister’s company, Aphrochic, where she became the creative director and interior stylist. During that time, she worked on REMIX: Decorating with Culture, Objects and Soul, released by Penguin Random House in 2013. Voted a top tech company by the online community Built in Boston, Wayfair is, in Angela’s words, “on the cutting edge of where things are going” in the world of interior design and home furnishings. Angela works with a team of 3D artists and stylists who use models and talented graphic designers to enhance the photo studio process. These models give the stylists much more creative freedom than a traditional 2D photoshoot, which can be expensive and time consuming. While Angela says entering the tech sector has required her to “learn an entirely new language… I have the background knowledge to know what makes sense in an image, aside from just looking good.” There are cultural differences as well: interior design is a sphere that values the longevity of a career, and expects people to cultivate their skills over a longer time period, whereas tech jobs focus more on the skills people learn in school and apply right away. Within 3 months of joining the company, Angela had the opportunity to champion diversity initiatives for Wayfair, when she was asked to recruit at her alma mater. “It was exciting to me to know that Wayfair wanted talent from a historically black college [...] It’s part of a larger push, not just a one time thing.” Internally, Angela is an active member of a group for African American employees to network and build a community. She stresses the importance of having members of underrepresented groups in leadership roles: “It meant a lot to me at Room and Board that I had an African American mentor, and two African American bosses. Seeing those people advance to leadership positions let me know I had a place in the company.” If you’d like to get in touch with Angela you can find her on Instagram, or see examples of her work on her website. They are the first black company to have their own line of paint, are authors and also have a show on HGTV House Hunter's page, Sneak Peak with Aphrochic. Their company started with an idea of modern design and culture within the home decor space. Although not designers by training, Jeanne is an attorney and Brian is an academic, they started a blog writing about design with a highlight on diversity. What started as a hobby eventually became their profession. Soon they discovered a product gap in the market where they didn't see products geared towards people of color. This led them to their first book deal. For Aphrochic design is an ethnographic study into who a person is. Brands now come to them because they like their aesthetic and their focus on the intersection between modern design and global culture. To learn more, follow Aprochic on Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook or visit their website. Tina Nicole Tina Nicole is the co-founder of Nathan Anthony, a furniture company with LA origins, known for their custom furniture pieces and colorful tone. The company started in 2005 when her husband, a local mattress, and sofa manufacturer who owned his own factory, asked her to come in and pick fabrics. Naming the business after their son, they did a few local trade shows and then the business took off. They now showcase their products at High Point Market and Design Bloggers Conference. This is their first year attending and showcasing at the Conference. To learn more visit their website or follow them on Instagram and Twitter. Four Friends Designs Elizabeth, Meg, Renee and Sheila, the owners of Four Friends Design all went to school together at the New York School of Design. After school, the four friends moved away from New York and worked at top design firms across the country. Although they have been on their own for 10 years they continued to stay in touch, utilizing each other as design resources. About two years ago they had the idea to harness the power of their collective minds and various design styles and resources into one business. They started a blog called Four Friends Design which they manage in addition to their full-time job, each taking turns writing posts. The goal of the interiors and lifestyle focused blog is to tell the real truth, from four different perspectives from designers spanning four distinct regions of the United States.
