Pete Cross performs Garrard Conley's debut novel of a star-crossed love affair. Host Jo Reed and AudioFile's Kendra Winchester discuss this beautifully devastating story of love between minister Nathaniel Whitfield and physician Arthur Lyman in Puritan New England. Firsthand account right here! Honoluluʻs Chinatown was hopping with great players at Two Jacks, the Swing Club, and Brown Derby, where Louis Armstrong performed. In this interview, drummer Harold Chang talks about how military bands changed the scene, and how Hawaiian swing evolved. Pua Almeida, Richard Kauhi, Sonny Kamaka, Martin Denny, Chang played with the greats as part of Hawaiʻiʻs pumping music scene after WWII. Harold Chang is primarily known for his role in the Arthur Lyman Group. Their first album, Taboo, made the Billboard national Top Ten in 1959. They recorded dozens of albums and won three gold records. Their brand of jazz inflected Exotica had a heyday through the 1960ʻs, when "tikis" and "tiki bars" sprang up all over the world. By the 1970ʻs, folk and rock entered the picture and Exotica slid into disco-inflected crossovers. An exotica revival was reported in the 1990ʻs, and pockets of aficionados bide their time. For us, the social history is the juiciest part here. Weʻre getting an eye opening picture of the post-World War II entertainment scene in our Honolulu. Mahalo, again to todayʻs musicians, all Hawaiʻi based, as usual. In the Don Tiki band, Hae Jung and Sherry Shaoling, mahalo for delivering those crisply seductive vocals. Thanks so much, for what you do, Roger Bong of Aloha got Soul!!! Debbie Yeoh, mahalo for tactical support! If anyone out there knows the name of a woman who produced a video called Swingtime in Honolulu for PBS, Harold would like to know. We were looking at her reference materials doing this interview. You can email me at noe@noetanigawa.com. Also, if you know about Richard Kauhiʻs life and career, especially on the U.S. continent, drop me a line! Song List HOT LIKE LAVA. Don Tiki. Peace! https://www.paypal.com/donate/?hosted_button_id=5E6WCP8KAS4NG Electrica Selvatica is a folkloric EDM music genre of pre-Columbian influence. EDM stands for electronic dance music, dance music, club music. In Electrica Selvatica, Latin American Magical Realism meets music, returning the power of mysticism, indigenism to music through anecdotal stories with a touch of magic, under a theme that flows between cosmic, exotic, wild scenarios. Journeys through galaxies, through the multiform explosions of the Latin American universe. All combined with tropical winks, baptized by some as a tribute to Space/Jungle music. The Electrica Selvatica is a musical phenomenon that is crossing the Web in a disruptive way and we believe it is linked by a red thread that in the '50s Martin Denny began to weave with Exotica Music. Born in New York, Martin Denny was involved in many big band tours in the 1930s, served in the Army Air Corps during World War II, and in the mid-1950s found himself in Hawaii playing at the Hawaiian Village Hotel in Waikiki. His group, a quartet that also included Arthur Lyman on vibraphone, played around a hotel pool in a natural setting, performing long arrangements of folk songs with one or two instruments typical from Hawaii and places in Asia and the South Pacific, such as conch shells, Indonesian and Burmese gongs, Japanese kotos, and boobams. - Join my Facebook Group Meditation Mindfulness Yoga Mantra https://www.facebook.com/groups/642191676459430 - Here my short stories about Kindness (I giorni della gentilezza- Paperback - Italian version)- https://tinyurl.com/3vfud2c9 - Here my book Learn Māori Culture and Proverbs (paperback) tinyurl.com/6zmvz9tt - Version with Full Color Images - www.amazon.com/Learn-M%C4%81ori-…1621334435&sr=8-3 - Poster Maramataka: tinyurl.com/pht4easb - Here my book dedicated to Lo-Fi Music (ebook and paperback), tinyurl.com/r2d69dyb - on Amazon USA, UK, INDIA, JAPAN, GERMANY, BRAZIL and other countries. - Here my book Black Book Note www.amazon.com/BLACK-BOOK-NOTE-i…32&s=books&sr=1-1 - Here my book with illustrated philosophical short stories (ebook and paperback), https://tinyurl.com/mfyd4vk7 - on Amazon USA, UK, INDIA, JAPAN, GERMANY, BRAZIL and other countries. This week’s Deeper Roots takes an historical journey into a sidelight of America’s music: Exotica. The music was a phenomenon mostly attributed to a popularity born of World War II; servicemen returning from the South Seas, Hawaii, and other Asian locales had been exposed to the music and culture. Post-war found two composers who nurtured this sudden boom of south sea influences: Les Baxter and Martin Denny, both releasing groundbreaking popular performances that were an instant success. Even though these two composers were among a small cast of characters, like any popular American music that showed legs on the charts, their sound led to copy-cats and variations on the theme that were too eclectic to pigeonhole and today’s show will tap into a few of those nooks and crannies. It’s all in good fun with wild and sensual sounds from the lounge of mid-century performers like Arthur Lyman, Yma Sumac, Peggy Lee, and 80 Drums Around the World. We’ll also dig into some novel easy listening sounds from the deeper, dustier archives, retooled for a new generation by the Numero Group on their anthology called Technicolor Paradise, release in 2018. Join the rest of the castaways on our two hour tour this week on Sonoma County Community Radio.
