01. "Rock Around the Clock" - Bill Haley & the Comets 1954/1955 02. Welcome to The B-Side, from The Film Stage. Here we talk about movie stars! Not the movies that made them famous or kept them famous, but the ones they made in between. Today we discuss one of our biggest, most enduring movie stars: Sandra Bullock! To do this, we've brought our good friend and the co-host of the great Almost Major podcast: Kevin Tudor! Our B-Sides today include: Love Potion No. 9, 28 Days, The Lake House, and Our Brand Is Crisis. We dig into Bullock's peaks and valleys as a star, her humble beginnings on TV (she played Tess on the TV adaptation of Working Girl!), and her breakout mid-90s. We marvel at the incredible misogyny-tinged criticism she endured early on in her career, wonder if we'll ever see the short film she directed, and discuss why we love (or don't love!) The Lake House. Trust us, our brands are most assuredly…crisis. Be sure to give us a follow on Twitter and Facebook at @TFSBSide. Also enter our giveaways, get access to our private Slack channel, and support new episodes by becoming a Patreon contributor. We are also now on Spotify and Stitcher. Enjoy!

I took my troubles down to Madame Ruth ... You know that gypsy with the gold-capped tooth ... She's got a pad down on Thirty-Fourth and Vine ... Sellin' little bottles of Love Potion Number Nine! From 1992 and starring real life couple at the time Tate Donovan and Sandra Bullock, Love Potion No. 9 is about two biochemists who stumble upon a potion that makes whoever drinks it unbelievably atractive to the opposite sex! Chaos ensues! This movie is sort of confusing (trying to explain the science behind love potions hmmmm) a bit light on the rom and the com, and if we have to see a smart Sandra Bullock character with frizzy hair, glasses and an overbite one more time, well we're going to hurl! We'll sing/hum some other songs that were used for movie titles, try to remember who Tate Donovan is, and talk about whether we think Volkswagons are cool or for losers?
DJ Johnny hosts the All-New House of Public Discourse Radio Network's Classic Quite Strom.
Two movies about who others think we are and where that intersects with our self-perception — it's Broadcast News vs Love Potion No. 9.
Take a gypsy, chimpanzees, two nerdy friends, the Prince of England and a love potion and what do you get? Love Potion No. 9, a 1992 rom-com starring Sandra Bullock and Tate Donovan. We found this movie to be laugh-out-loud ridiculous if you're in the right mood, but just plain ridiculous if you're not. Today Nick and Sarah discuss the most famous love potion, that being Love Potion No. 9 and the topic of violence in video games. Does it make someone more aggressive and violent?
Today we talk to Fiona Silver about her tour with Gary Clark Jr., her songwriting process, outfits and influences. We also do some Music Trivia between Fiona and Mike (at the end) ABOUT FIONA SILVER: Fiona Silver is a pixie-sized powerhouse, born and bred in New York City, with a take no prisoners punk ethic. Silver is not only a singer, but also a songwriter, producer, guitarist and, “rockstar, period.” [Beautiful Savage Magazine] Her evocative artistry encompasses the doe-eyed playfulness of 1960s girl groups (a nod to one of her personal mentors, Ronnie Spector), along with strains of vintage soul, edgy pop, and gritty Rock N Roll. Her latest EP, Hostage of Love, is a masterstroke both vulnerable and rebellious. Inspired by events from her tumultuous life, filled with dire beauty and vital sorrow, Fiona has emerged as the dynamic artist she is today, mesmerizing audiences with an essence of seductive charm and a captivating innocence. After touring with 4x Grammy Winner Gary Clark Jr. Fiona Silver continues to rise upon the music scene. Legendary Rock 'N Roll DJ Rodney Bingenheimer (who broke bands like Joan Jett and the Ramones) premiered Silver's songs on KROQ and Sirius XM, calling her music “beyond amazing.” Silver has the added distinction of being endorsed by Telefunken Microphones, Reverend Guitars and Luna Guitars. Since the release of her debut album Little Thunder, Silver has also released a slew of singles, toured extensively throughout North America, opened for the Black Pumas, Andrew W. K., performed with Carlos Santana, and most recently accompanied Gwen Stefani for NBC's New Year's Eve special, and “Christmas in Rockefeller Center” Special. On Valentine's Day 2020 Silver released her highly anticipated EP ‘Hostage of Love,' and celebrated with a packed headlining show at Brooklyn Bowl. COPYRIGHT CLAIM: Night Clubbing, Take Me Down, Violence, 2020, Love Potion No.9 & Smoking Gun were used with permission from Fiona Silver.

He joins host Krys Boyd to argue that drugs that can help strengthen – and sever – relationships are out there now, and it’s time to understand the ethics and morals behind their use. His book, co-authored with Julian Savulescu, is “Love Drugs: The Chemical Future of Relationships.”

(Content note: We discuss issues of magic and consent, but nothing too graphic. And this may be my favorite content note ever.) Sandra Bullock and Tate Donovan are simply irresistible, thanks to Madame Ruth. Yes, it’s based way too closely on the song. Or not closely enough? We wish for more cop kissing and less sorority crashing. Host Julia Skott and AJ Knox.
Determined or desperate? Gillian Murphey shows up late, just in time for me to ramble about Porky's for 10 minutes. Join us for an uncomfortable blast to the past as we unravel the unseemly sexual politics of this 1992 romantic comedy. World-famous mega movie star Tate Donovan and lesser-known independent film darling Sandra Bullock star as nerdy biochemists who happen upon the recipe for sex appeal. Throwing scientific ethics out the door and playing fast and loose with the concept of consent, the two set out on a crisscrossing series of sexual adventures. This film is clearly problematic from jump street...and begs the question: why did Josh watch this so frequently as a tween? ... but is it a cash grab? Paul and animal psychologist coworker Diane Farrow (Sandra Bullock) decide to test it on themselves. 1992's Love Potion No. 9 is a bad movie that was built to be loved. It introduced the world to Sandra Bullock's charms. It also asked us to tolerate Tate Donovan, and we begrudgingly obliged.

The 80's eats far too much pixi-dust and barfs out the worst of it right into our faces. It's Pia Zedora showing off why a millionaire had to pay for her to act and Craig Scheffer giving poopy face for 90 minutes. If you want to make sure you've seen the worst musical, you can't miss this pile of no talent. The deal with Voyage of the Rock Aliens is that it's a failed project before it even gets started. Originally it was supposed to be more like UHF instead it's more like Grease 2. You've got Pia Zedora attempting to launch her career by dancing like she's in a blender. On the opposite side of the obligatory love relationship is Craig Scheffer (yes Craig Scheffer from Nightbreed and A River Runs Through It) whose entire thing is to lip-sync over Jermaine Jackson and making poopy-face over and over and over and over again. Believe it or not, the movie has a myriad of other terrible set pieces and acting. Each and every musical number (with the exception of the the Jermaine Jackson "When the Rain Begins to Fall" which wasn't supposed to be in the film) is absolutely atrocious as if you went to the mall and had the "Be in the Music Video" store produce your movie. The Rock Aliens are actually the band Rhema (mostly, the bass player wasn't screen-worthy apparently) who ALL have no business being on screen give us the majority of the musical numbers so I hope you like Devo knockoffs. Add in a couple psychopath slashers, a tentacle monster, West Side Story knockoffs, bad costumes, future makeup, terrible robots, C.H.O.M.P.S. level comedy, Love Potion No. 8 devices and Ruth Gordon and you've got a recipe for disaster that boils over onto your stove, making a permanent stain on your psyche. Be warned, this one's not for everyone and can be a little tough to get through. You may end up squirming in your chair in discomfort. But it's an absolute must if you want to know what the worst musical is, love crappy 80's videos, or love touring IMDB Bottom 100 worthy films. Check out Eric's Double Loop podcast at https://soundcloud.com/double-loop-podcast
Once again, the 80s/90s rom-com genre falls into that horrible disgusting trap of "if you think about this very much you'll want to wash your eyes out with soap" because very unforgivable things happen to the people around the main characters. Both of the people on the cover belong in jail. There is a serious warning content-wise here but this needs to be said - Love Potion No. 9 is about 1 thing - rape. It steers very clear of the song where it turns the drinker into a raging boner, this love potion causes anyone of the opposite sex to become a mindless zombie and you can make them do whatever you want. So what do the leads do? Well Paul (Tate Donovan) rapes an entire sorority and Diane (Sandra Bullock) makes the Prince of England propose to her forever changing the landscape of the British Monarchy. Wow, what charming, awesome, quirky people? No! Both belong in prison. There's only one thing you should do with Love Potion No 8 (#9 isn't good but its not quite as villainous #8) - destroy it. That's the only thing a good person would do with it. It's the most dangerous single chemical that has ever existed in mankind's history and if you do ANYTHING with it but destroy it, you are taking a risk that someone else gets their hands on it. Imagine if the KGB had Love Potion No 8 or if Kim Jong Un (he's not our friend, MAGA) had this. The world would have literally days left before the whole thing is kaboom. Aside from the nastiness of the mains, there's little else to come for here unless you're out for some nostalgia. There is one sequence involving a horny little chimpanzee that it is absolutely hilarious. But that's it. Anything else is a bit of a waste of time and likely will just want you to rethink every decision that has brought you to this moment in life.
We talk about love! Romantic love, self love, love spells, and all associated things! Focuses on: Goddesses, spell ingredients, ethical practice, and some brief Valentine's day history Content warning: mentions of sex
For Valentine's week, we discuss the book "The Four Tendencies" by Gretchen Rubin how knowing your tendency (and your partners) can help you be more successful in the organizing projects you have around your home. Kait tells Victoria about the little known 1992 tale of two monkey psychiatrists who fall in love, Love Potion No. 9. Starring Tate Donovan and Sandra Bullock.
Paul and Scott catch up with Jose Feliciano to find out why "Feliz Navidad" was written in July; chat with "Santa Baby" composer Phil Springer to hear the reason he was hesitant to write the world's first "sexy Christmas song;" get the scoop from Mike Stoller about Elvis recording "Santa Claus is Back in Town" when the song was less than an hour old; find out from former Ray Charles backup singer Mable John what the movie "Christmas Vacation" did for Ray's recording of her song "That Spirit of Christmas;" talk to Mark Lowry about how "Mary Did You Know?" went from a recitation in a local church play to a contemporary Christmas standard; listen to former Motown staff writer Bryan Wells explain why his "Someday at Christmas" is as relevant today as it was when Stevie Wonder first released it more than 50 years ago; and find out how TV producer Lee Mendelson became an accidental songwriter when it was time to add lyrics to "Christmas Time is Here" from "A Charlie Brown Christmas." Jose Feliciano – “Feliz Navidad” (1970) A true international superstar, virtuoso guitarist and celebrated vocalist Jose Feliciano found fame in the US with his hugely successful Feliciano album in 1968. He earned a Top 5 hit with his interpretation of The Doors’ “Light My Fire” that same year and has gone on to win seven Grammy awards. “Feliz Navidad” was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame, and was named by ASCAP as one of the most performed holiday songs of all time. Philip Springer – “Santa Baby” by Eartha Kitt (1953) At 91 years old, Phil Springer is one of the last living composers from the pre-rock “Brill Building” era of professional songwriters. In addition to writing the music for “Santa Baby,” Springer penned Frankie Laine’s Top 5 hit “Moonlight Gambler,” Frank Sinatra’s “How Little it Matters, How Little We Know,” and Cliff Richard’s “The Next Time,” which hit #1 in the UK in 1963. Additionally, he wrote songs that have been recorded by Judy Garland, Dusty Springfield, and Elvis Presley. Mike Stoller – “Santa Clause is Back in Town” by Elvis Presley (1957) One of the key architects of rock and R&B songwriting, Mike Stoller is a member of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, the Songwriters Hall of Fame, and one of Rolling Stone magazine’s 100 Greatest Songwriters of All Time. His long list of writing credits with partner Jerry Leiber includes “Kansas City,” “Yakety Yak,” “Stand By Me,” “Poison Ivy,” “Love Potion No. 9,”and more than 20 titles recorded by Elvis, including “Hound Dog,” “Jailhouse Rock,” and the perennial “Santa Clause is Back in Town.” Mable John – “That Spirit of Christmas” by Ray Charles (1985) Best remembered from the sentimental attic scene in National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation, “That Spirit of Christmas” was co-written by Mable John. She is Little Willie John’s younger sister and was the first female solo artist signed to Motown’s Tamla label in the 1950s. She would go on to score a Top 10 hit as a Stax artist with “Your Good Thing (Is About to End)” and serve as the leader of Ray Charles’ backing singers, The Raelettes, for more than a decade. Mark Lowry – “Mary Did You Know” (1991) Though he spent eighteen years as a member of the legendary Gaither Vocal Band and has released nearly twenty albums and, Dove award winning Christian singer and comedian Mark Lowry is best known to mainstream audiences as the co-writer of “Mary Did You Know.” The song was first recorded in 1991 by Michael English, who was a fellow member of the Gaither Vocal Band at the time. It would go on to be recorded by Natalie Cole, Reba McEntire, Glen Campbell, Jessica Simpson, Mary J. Blige, Cee Lo Green, Pentatonix, and many others. Bryan Wells – “Someday at Christmas” by Stevie Wonder (1966) Former Motown staff writer Bryan Wells co-wrote Stevie Wonder’s Top 10 hits “A Place in the Sun” and “Yester-Me, Yester-You, Yesterday.” He has earned four Clio Awards for music he has composed for advertising campaigns and is Bette Midler’s former music director. Wells and partner Ron Miller co-wrote three songs on Stevie’s 1967 holiday album, including the title track, “Someday at Christmas” which has since been covered by The Jackson 5, Diana Ross, The Temptations, Jack Johnson, Justin Bieber, and others. Lee Mendelson – “Christmas Time is Here” from A Charlie Brown Christmas (1965)TV producer Lee Mendelson became a songwriter by default when he scrawled the lyrics for “Christmas Time is Here” on the back of an envelope to complete the opening scene of A Charlie Brown Christmas. It was Mendelson who chose Vince Guaraldi to score the special, introducing generations of kids to jazz music. He went on to write additional songs for future Peanuts specials with collaborators including David Benoit.

My guest for this month is Herb van der Poll, and he’s joined me to discuss the film I chose for him, the 1988 Dutch–French film The Vanishing. You can follow the show on Twitter @cinemagadfly. Show notes: The director, George Sluizer, didn’t really direct much else besides this film and its remake The soundtrack definitely has a Tears for Fears vibe to it, which is 100% ok with me Herb checked with his Dutch parents to make sure we pronounced Spoorloos correctly Bernard-Pierre Donnadieu is basically perfect as the villain in this film If you enjoy this film, you’d probably also love Alfred Hitchock’s The Lady Vanishes The actress who plays the second girlfriend Lieneke, Gwen Eckhaus, was randomly in a television series in the Netherlands called Spoorloos verdwenen, which I assume is unrelated Getting a compliment on your film from Stanley Kubrick is a big deal to me The first girlfriend, Saskia, is played by Johanna ter Steege. I think I would have enjoyed her in a Kubrick film I want to be very clear that this film is a billion times better than The Blair Witch Project Apparently Curious George is alternately called “Slimme Sjors” and “Nieuwsgierig Aapje” in the Netherlands This film is really nothing like Requiem for a Dream or Audition Seriously, please don’t watch the remake, it’s not even fun ironically I don’t know how much we can blame the remake on the adapted screenplay by Todd Graff, but I would hazard a guess that it’s a lot A more subtle mistake was the changing of cinematographers from the sublime work of Toni Kuhn to the mediocre adaptation by Peter Suschitzky The changes go way, way beyond those of Brazil’s Love Conquers All cut. Also, at least that one includes the entire original film to enjoy Jeff Bridges is usually pretty good, so I’m not sure what happened here. I tend to believe Herb’s Silence of the Lambs theory Milton from Office Space was played by the incomparable Stephen Root R.I.P.D. is really an underrated example of good acting in a terrible film Jeff Bridges is truly terrible here, while Kiefer Sutherland and Sandra Bullock are just really bad This film was two years before The Net, but a year after Love Potion No. 9, so I’m not sure how famous Bullock was Nancy Travis is terrible as well, but her character does provide a lot of the unintentional comedy, so I mind less The award Blood Simple got was the Mel Novikoff award Peter Becker and Jonathon Turell didn’t start the Criterion Collection, but they do run it today To my mind, the Coen Brothers, Barry Sonnenfeld, and Blood Simple definitely belong in the collection I am irrationally excited for the arrival of FilmStruck, and just wish it was here already Rent or buy the film from Amazon Rent or buy the film on iTunes Watch the film on Hulu
The Knxwbodies are joined on a very hilarious episode, by the "Loopy God". lol Valentines Day, virus' and drug epidemic's are topics for discussion.
Mike Stoller has written more than 60 songs that have appeared on the Billboard charts, including the #1 hits “Hound Dog,” “Kansas City,” “Yakety Yak,” “Searchin’,” “Jailhouse Rock,” “Poison Ivy,” “Stand By Me,” “Young Blood,” “Don’t,” and “Ruby, Baby." After Stoller and songwriting partner Jerry Leiber found early R&B success with recordings by Little Esther, Charles Brown, Ray Charles, and Big Mama Thornton, Elvis Presley turned their song "Hound Dog" into a #1 single on the pop, R&B, and country charts in 1956. Elvis went on to record more than 20 Leiber and Stoller titles, including the hits "Love Me," "Loving You," "Jailhouse Rock," "Treat Me Nice," "She's Not You," and "Bossa Nova Baby." Mike and Jerry signed an independent production deal with Atlantic Records in the mid-1950s, where they wrote and produced a series of hits for several artists, including the Drifters' "There Goes My Baby," "Dance With Me," and "On Broadway." Additionally, the pair wrote and produced all the Coasters' singles, including "Young Blood," "Searchin'," "Charlie Brown," "Along Came Jones," and "Poison Ivy." Other highlights from the Leiber and Stoller songbook include "Love Potion No. 9," which was a hit for both the Clovers and the Searchers, and "Is That All There Is," which was a hit for Peggy Lee. Eleven different versions of their song “Stand By Me” appeared on the Billboard charts over the span of 50 years, with the original version by Ben E. King hitting the Top 10 in both 1961 and 1986. Smokey Joe's Cafe, which included 40 Leiber and Stoller songs, opened in 1995 and became the longest running musical revue in Broadway history. Stoller received the prestigious ASCAP Founders Award in 1991, has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, and is a member of both the Songwriters Hall of Fame and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
This week THE MILKSHAKE BOOM take our troubles to Madame Ruth (you know that gypsy with the gold-capped tooth?) and drink in 'Love Potion No. 9', a romantic comedy from 1992 written and directed by Dale Launer and starring Tate Donovan and Sandra Bullock! And while we discuss topics like our favorite Sandra Bullock movies, we mainly focus on the incredibly dark under current that is this movie's premise! For the most part, this is just a fun little rom com, but then again... Wow, who would have thought a catchy little tune for the 1950's would inspire such a perverse nightmare?

What? What is essential to podcasting? That's why you're here, right? You want to know how to profit with your podcast. Let me share a secret with you: even magic potions have recipes. That's right! Love Potion No. 9 is a recipe. It might smell like turpentine and look like Indian ink, but Madame Ruth mixed it up right there in the sink. The road to profiting is a recipe, and everybody's recipe is a little bit different. Luckily, creatively combining the various ingredients of a podcast is far less worrisome than creative cooking. In fact, it's much less stressful, in my own opinion. Following recipes can be difficult; maybe you don't have all the ingredients and have to hunt down substitutes, maybe you don't have a utensil required, maybe you don't understand what the recipe means exactly. Take, for example, this recipe from my mother (to the right). I was looking for my Nana's incredibly yummy roll recipe in my mom's recipe box and found this. I quickly took a picture of this notecard with my phone, put the box back where I found it, and left my parents' house without actually reading it. Read more...
