This week's episode takes us behind the scenes of an independent record label and record store out of Portland, Oregon: Jackpot Records, with its founder Isaac Slusarenko. He opened the store in 1997 as a place that was all about music, no T-shirts or candles. He launched the label in 2004 with a vinyl edition of the 1971 self-titled psychedelic soul album by Beauregard, a Portland wrestler, followed by albums by local rockers the Wipers. With repeat Caropop guest Kevin Grey providing the all-analog mastering then and now, the label offers Record Store Day treasures (Gandalf!) while releasing higher-profile titles by the Meters, Booker T. and the M.G.'s, Etta James, the Electric Prunes, Bill Evans, Martin Denny and others. How does the licensing of albums work? How does Slusarenko make his Jackpot pressings stand out? How important are the cover art, colored vinyl and limited editions? Slusarenko pulls back the curtains.
For a lot of people with contemporary tastes, exotica only equates to easy listening. Understandably so, since in the modern era it may strike first time listeners as muzak, elevator vapidity…jazz sans soul. But when you strip those biases and revisit the movement that began with the likes of Martin Denny and Les Baxter, you […] The post Kolumbo: “Spin the Bottle” appeared first on KUT & KUTX Studios -- Podcasts.

Justin Cooper has had an excellent 450 MX go so far and he's on to talk about it as well as his chances at sticking around an extremely packed Star Yamaha team for 2025. Liberty Records was founded in 1955 by Simon Waronker after his cousin, Herb Newman, suggested they go into the record business. The early years found the label in the deep end of easy listening pop with the likes of Julie London, novelty music featuring The Chipmunks, Patience and Prudence, Martin Denny, and Henry Mancini. But rock n' roll was hitting its stride, and in the late fifties they released a blend of pure rock and rockabilly with Eddie Cochran. But the 60s found a more tame version with hitmakers like Bobby Vee, Johnny Burnette, Timi Yuro, Buddy Knox, and the post-Buddy Holly Crickets. At the peak of it's hit-making machine the whole lot was sold to an umbrella company that also featured the catalogs of Imperial, Aladdin, Minit, and Dolton…we'll share a host of Liberty releases with you in the show today. With the exception of Eddie Cochran, we'll just call it rock ‘n roll ‘lite'.

I’ve never been shy about my love of jazz, pretty much every style across the spectrum, save Dixieland (sorry, not sorry). One of my all-time favorite sub-genres out of that bunch is Exotica, the Latin-leaning, arrangement-driven “easy listening” style made famous by Martin Denny in the ’50s. Now, I know I’m far from the only […]
Martin Denny was an American pianist and composer best known as the father of "exotica" during the Golden Days of Radio.
Firsthand account right here! Honoluluʻs Chinatown was hopping with great players at Two Jacks, the Swing Club, and Brown Derby, where Louis Armstrong performed. In this interview, drummer Harold Chang talks about how military bands changed the scene, and how Hawaiian swing evolved. Pua Almeida, Richard Kauhi, Sonny Kamaka, Martin Denny, Chang played with the greats as part of Hawaiʻiʻs pumping music scene after WWII. Harold Chang is primarily known for his role in the Arthur Lyman Group. Their first album, Taboo, made the Billboard national Top Ten in 1959. They recorded dozens of albums and won three gold records. Their brand of jazz inflected Exotica had a heyday through the 1960ʻs, when "tikis" and "tiki bars" sprang up all over the world. By the 1970ʻs, folk and rock entered the picture and Exotica slid into disco-inflected crossovers. An exotica revival was reported in the 1990ʻs, and pockets of aficionados bide their time. For us, the social history is the juiciest part here. Weʻre getting an eye opening picture of the post-World War II entertainment scene in our Honolulu. Mahalo, again to todayʻs musicians, all Hawaiʻi based, as usual. In the Don Tiki band, Hae Jung and Sherry Shaoling, mahalo for delivering those crisply seductive vocals. Thanks so much, for what you do, Roger Bong of Aloha got Soul!!! Debbie Yeoh, mahalo for tactical support! If anyone out there knows the name of a woman who produced a video called Swingtime in Honolulu for PBS, Harold would like to know. We were looking at her reference materials doing this interview. EDM stands for electronic dance music, dance music, club music. In Electrica Selvatica, Latin American Magical Realism meets music, returning the power of mysticism, indigenism to music through anecdotal stories with a touch of magic, under a theme that flows between cosmic, exotic, wild scenarios. Journeys through galaxies, through the multiform explosions of the Latin American universe. All combined with tropical winks, baptized by some as a tribute to Space/Jungle music. The Electrica Selvatica is a musical phenomenon that is crossing the Web in a disruptive way and we believe it is linked by a red thread that in the '50s Martin Denny began to weave with Exotica Music. Born in New York, Martin Denny was involved in many big band tours in the 1930s, served in the Army Air Corps during World War II, and in the mid-1950s found himself in Hawaii playing at the Hawaiian Village Hotel in Waikiki. His group, a quartet that also included Arthur Lyman on vibraphone, played around a hotel pool in a natural setting, performing long arrangements of folk songs with one or two instruments typical from Hawaii and places in Asia and the South Pacific, such as conch shells, Indonesian and Burmese gongs, Japanese kotos, and boobams. - Join my Facebook Group Meditation Mindfulness Yoga Mantra https://www.facebook.com/groups/642191676459430 - Here my short stories about Kindness (I giorni della gentilezza- Paperback - Italian version)- https://tinyurl.com/3vfud2c9 - Here my book Learn Māori Culture and Proverbs (paperback) tinyurl.com/6zmvz9tt - Version with Full Color Images - www.amazon.com/Learn-M%C4%81ori-…1621334435&sr=8-3 - Poster Maramataka: tinyurl.com/pht4easb - Here my book dedicated to Lo-Fi Music (ebook and paperback), tinyurl.com/r2d69dyb - on Amazon USA, UK, INDIA, JAPAN, GERMANY, BRAZIL and other countries. - Here my book Black Book Note www.amazon.com/BLACK-BOOK-NOTE-i…32&s=books&sr=1-1 - Here my book with illustrated philosophical short stories (ebook and paperback), https://tinyurl.com/mfyd4vk7 - on Amazon USA, UK, INDIA, JAPAN, GERMANY, BRAZIL and other countries. Polynesian Village, remember that...or Don Ho? Well in this shorty episode we will cover a fun new compilation CD called Technicolor Paradise, which according to the label who put it out, Numero Group...it's all about "rum rhapsodies and other exotic delights' from the music of Les Baxter to Martin Denny. Then we will chat about Permanent Vacation my new book that hopes to make you feel as fine as a mystery solved by Hawaii 5-0. Shout out to Dusty Groove a GREAT record store you need to go crate digging in!
Last year I kept encountering more and more ska music that was rather, for lack of a better term, lounge-y. I've always been a fan of Martin Denny and exotica lounge stuff, as well as the more popular stuff by Nelson Riddle, and even more modern throwbacks like Tipsy and the Pizzicato Five. So I kept updating a playlist labeled "Lounge Type Ska" as 2020 rolled on, and when I had more than enough songs I tried my hand at getting them assembled into this episode. It's not a dancing episode, it's a relaxing episode, so sit down and raise a glass, you've earned it. 00:00 - the Magnetics - Campari (Cocktails & Fairytales Vol. 2 '20) 02:48 - charlot - メランコリア (メランコリア / What is going on 'round you? In tonight's show she takes a little imaginary voyage to the islands, exploring a few kitschy tourist attractions of yesteryear along the way. This week’s Deeper Roots takes an historical journey into a sidelight of America’s music: Exotica. The music was a phenomenon mostly attributed to a popularity born of World War II; servicemen returning from the South Seas, Hawaii, and other Asian locales had been exposed to the music and culture. Post-war found two composers who nurtured this sudden boom of south sea influences: Les Baxter and Martin Denny, both releasing groundbreaking popular performances that were an instant success. Even though these two composers were among a small cast of characters, like any popular American music that showed legs on the charts, their sound led to copy-cats and variations on the theme that were too eclectic to pigeonhole and today’s show will tap into a few of those nooks and crannies. It’s all in good fun with wild and sensual sounds from the lounge of mid-century performers like Arthur Lyman, Yma Sumac, Peggy Lee, and 80 Drums Around the World. We’ll also dig into some novel easy listening sounds from the deeper, dustier archives, retooled for a new generation by the Numero Group on their anthology called Technicolor Paradise, release in 2018. Join the rest of the castaways on our two hour tour this week on Sonoma County Community Radio.

When you hear the start of this, you will notice that you're not hearing the Coffeeshop Conversations theme. Good catch. The regular theme doesn’t have men imitating birds and frogs. No, this is Martin Denny’s Quiet Village which ushered in a whole new thing when it was released in 1957…called Exotica. And it was. It was also a huge hit and so were the Martin Denny lp’s that followed. Well, today’s guest in the Artichoke Café is Isaac Sluseranko who runs Jackpot Records. Every year around Record Store Day, this year on Saturday, August 29, they reissue something that blows you away. This year it’s four Martin Denny records, including the one with Quiet Village, that one in original Mono. Martin Denny sold millions and millions of records. Let’s find out why from Issac Slusarenko.

Lots of fun in this episode. To start off, you'll hear the lovely tones of Exotica Vol. III, by Martin Denny. Its fun music you may, or may not, like. Straight into what's bugging me. I cannot stand that we're questioning "Climate Change" as something that's real. The evidence is in, dummies, and it's for realsies. Recycling, though very underemployed as far as an industry, is easier than ever. There's a way if you have the will. Oh, and there's a shortage of water on this planet folks. I promise you that. After the ad, we come back to me talking all about things I'm into. I'll cut this text here short just by dropping major links... Relax in the Penthouse with Koop as he spins an evening of Les Baxter as programmed by James Spencer who recently wrote a book about the great musician https://www.amazon.com/Baxter-James-Spencer/dp/1530961203 LES BAXTER is the first published biography to examine a detailed history of composer and musician Leslie Thompson Baxter. One of Capitol Record's most prominent artists, Les had 35 hits and 11 album hits in a career that expanded nearly fifty years. Les is one of America's most influential, innovative and unique composers of of the 20th century. He is the father of Exotica, Space-Age Bachelor Music, and his experimental and innovative film scores set the standards for the genres of horror, sci-fi, westerns, and teen-age beach movies. The biography was researched over twenty years and includes rare interviews by Skip Heller, a protege who studied and was companion to Les during the last few years of his life. James Spencer, musicologist, concert pianist and recording artist became friends with Les Baxter in 1991 and documents the last five years of Les' life until his death in January of 1996. James Spencer includes a complete discography, filmography, comparative Hits study of Les Baxter and Martin Denny. The book includes personal remembrances by Les Baxter's daughter Leslie Eaton and others that knew Les. Musicologist Jeff Chenault introduces us to Les with a thoughtful foreword to this 700 page in depth biography of the man who penned the Exotica anthem "Quiet Village." Come join our "Quiet Village" and read this fascinating biography about the musical genius... Lost in the "vaults" is more like it. This show was popular in it's first appearance in 2010 and has had a couple resurrections since then. So, bringing it back yet again, you know to give the people what they want. ~Mr. Suave, 2024In the early 90s there was a bubbling up of cocktail music coming from the unsorted Goodwill record bins all the way to the dusty film music libraries of long dead or dormant record labels. Like a slow burn it crackled and hissed its way from one hi-fi set to the next, reviving memories of the yesteryear of 50s and 60s music, mostly amongst folks (like yours truly) just a tad to young to actually have such memories. In 1993 a little book called Incredibly Strange Music Volume 1 accompanied by a CD compilation arrived to little fanfare. Like they say it only takes a spark. The fire that got going not only included an explosion of lounge music compilations (multiple volumes of Music For a Bachelor's Den, the Beat at Cinnecita and Easy Tempo series, and the grand-daddy of lounge mixes, Capitol's Ultra-Lounge series which is still going strong) but also original acts like Love Jones and Combustible Edisonwho were echoing the smooth, suave, and sometimes silly and screwy, sounds of Esquivel, Martin Denny, Les Baxterand even Burt Bacharach and The Rat Pack among others. The lounge revival was in full swing, complete with it's own movie, Swingers. And later it's own parody, Austin Powers. It's not surprising that mods like myself, lovers of all things 60s, grew up and into the lounge revival. The music evokes some of the best aspects of 60s culture above and beyond the typical British Invasion, soul, and garage rock sounds most mods were weened on.Joining me on this week's loungecast is loungemaster extraordinaire, Ken from The Shingles, a long time mod friend, and he who is guilty of turning me on to the sounds of the cocktail nation all the way back in the early 90s. Here then is our primer on lounge music with a few better known tracks, some lesser lights, some easy listening, and some more jazzy stuff. Overall this is as good a lounge sampler as you might stumble across anywhere. And, for those so inclined here are a few recommendations for what to spin during your next cocktail hour.As always, swing by the swank place, www.mistersuave.com for a complete track list and bonus videos.
