According to the Atlanta Black Star, the Palm Springs City Council unanimously approved a $5.9 million reparations settlement for Black and Latino families whose homes were destroyed 60 years ago during urban renewal efforts. Known as Section 14, the neighborhood was a thriving enclave of working-class residents, including chefs and maids, until city officials ordered homes demolished and burned to make way for luxury tourism. The settlement includes direct cash payments to an estimated 1,200 descendants and plans for a memorial park, cultural healing center, and monument honoring the displaced families. Former residents, led by the Palm Springs Section 14 Survivors group, fought for years to hold the city accountable. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

It's time for another update in Mo'Nique's ongoing saga with Oprah Winfrey. The actress and comedian recently made amends with Lee Daniels and starred in his upcoming film, The Deliverance. But while they have buried the hatchet, Mo'Nique is still on the warpath when it comes to Winfrey. According to Atlanta Black Star, Mo'Nique recently posted a video on Instagram with the caption, “If a picture is worth a thousand words, then this video was worth a million to me. My deepest gratitude to the individuals who made this piece and for accurately stating the facts.” The video was comprised of clips including Mo'Nique talking about her issues with Perry and Winfrey over the 10 years she has talked about it in the media One of the clips were also from Winfrey's 2010 interview with Mo'Nique's brother, Gerald Imes, who Mo'Nique said sexually abused her as a child. In the interview, Imes apologized for his actions. In the clips that followed, Mo'Nique said to Barbara Walters that Winfrey reached out to her before she filmed her episode with Imes, but Winfrey allegedly didn't tell her that Mo'Nique's mother would also be part of the interview. Mo'Nique said that if she knew that, she would have told Winfrey not to do the interview at all. In the video, Mo'Nique talks about how she idolized Winfrey since they both grew up in abusive households and Mo'Nique saw her as a role model. Because Winfrey did the interview with her family regarding her abuse, Mo'Nique felt betrayed. Even though she has made peace with Daniels, the video also reignites conversation about Mo'Nique's issues with Daniels, which started when she claimed she was blackballed for not wanting to do an international press tour, including attending Cannes, for 'Precious.' Mo'Nique said that she wanted to spend more time with her family, but for that, she was locked out of the industry. It's also unclear how far along Mo'Nique and Tyler Perry are in their efforts to close the gap, but as of 2021, 50 Cent claimed he “squashed” the beef between them.

The police killer of Eric Garner is free. The police killer of Michael Brown is free. The police killer of 12-year-old Tamir Rice was a documented incompetent and a member of a racist Cleveland police department: he too is still free. Even more grotesque--American police departments do not keep accurate documents noting how many people they actually kill in a given year. America may not have the "desaparecidos" of her Southern neighbors; yet, the allusion is a chilling one that hints at the power of bureaucracies to make people disappear into nothingness because the state deem acts of violence against those individuals to be "within the law". In all, America's police are the primary means through which state violence is rendered on black and brown communities, as well as the poor. What should a person of color do when they encounter the police? How can you ensure that you, your loved ones, friends, and community members best survive an encounter with the criminal justice system--what is the new Jim and Jane Crow? In this, the fourth episode of Season Three, on the podcast known as The Chauncey DeVega Show, I had the great opportunity to chat with Pulitzer Prize-winning author and journalist Mr. Nick Chiles. He is the author of the new book Justice While Black and current editor of the Atlanta Black Star newspaper. Written with attorney Robbin Schipp, Nick's new book JusticeWhile Black is both an excellent (as well as accessible) history of the racist origins of America's police system, and a invaluable step by step guide for how to navigate the entrapping maze that is the American legal system and the many ways that it can (and will) ruin the lives of those people it encounters. In our conversation, Mr. Chiles summed up the crisis and conundrum that is when the colorline encounters the American legal system as follows: just because it is within your Constitutional rights to do a thing does not mean that a given cop will respect those rights. In this episode of The Chauncey DeVega Show, Nick and I discuss what to do when a police officer stops you, how answering no more than the basic questions you are legally obligated to is the smart move, how families can cause chaos and trouble if you are arrested, the dangers of the plea bargain, the foolish hysteria around common sense "black respectability politics", tales of black lives ruined by the system, and if he watches "crime porn" such as The First 48 television show. Nick also clears up some of Chauncey DeVega's misconceptions about what he should do if the police demand to search his car.

A recent article posted in the Atlanta Black Star listed 8 pastors whose income is 200x greater than that of their congregants. Here is the link to the article: http://atlantablackstar.com/2014/06/26/8-black-pastors-whose-net-worth-is-200-times-greater-than-folks-in-their-local-community/ Among those listed are several Nigerian pastors whose combined wealth is over 100 million US dollars. The debate on how and how much pastors should be compensated is an age old one. The underlying question for Western Christianity is how much is too much for a pastor's compensation package and when do other items cross into excess? Should pastors/clergy have their own planes, luxury cars and homes, and other toys, or should their wealth reflect the communities they serve. Join Pastor Neal for this and other lively topics.
