www.bittermedicineblogs.com – On today’s show we discuss the Bitter Medicine Book Club September reading: “Fighting for Honor: The History of African Martial Art in the Atlantic World” by T. J. Desch Obi (Author)! Even though September is over, you can still read the book and join the discussion on our blogsite! Listen to find out more. About the Book: The presence of African influence and tradition in the Americas has long been recognized in art, music, language, agriculture, and religion. T. J. Desch Obi explores another cultural continuity that is as old as eighteenth-century slave settlements in South America and as contemporary as hip-hop culture. In this thorough survey of the history of African martial arts techniques, Obi maps the translation of numerous physical combat techniques across three continents and several centuries to illustrate how these practices evolved over time and are still recognizable in American culture today. Some of these art traditions were part of African military training while others were for self-defense and spiritual discipline. Grounded in historical and cultural anthropological methodologies, Obi's investigation traces the influence of well-delineated African traditions on long-observed but misunderstood African and African American cultural activities in North America, Brazil, and the Caribbean. He links the Brazilian martial art capoeira to reports of slave activities recorded in colonial and antebellum North America. Likewise Obi connects images of the kalenda African stick-fighting techniques to the Haitian Revolution. Throughout the study Obi examines the ties between physical mastery of these arts and changing perceptions of honor. Including forty-five illustrations, this rich history of the arrival and dissemination of African martial arts in the Atlantic world offers a new vantage for furthering our understanding of the powerful influence of enslaved populations on our collective social history. (Amazon) About the Author: T. J. Desch Obi received his doctorate in African history from the University of California, Los Angeles. His research focuses on historical ethnography, which he explores through the lens of African and African diaspora martial arts. He is currently an assistant professor of African and African diaspora history at the City University of New York's Baruch College. (Amazon) Book Club: Join the October Book Club! Granted, Black folks are the most empathetic people on the planet, but this is pathetic and one-sided. It's called the "We's Sick Boss?!" Syndrome. https://www.bittermedicineblogs.com – On today’s show we discuss Psychology and Advertisements. Ads play on your feelings or emotions by creating positive associations between the product and our behaviors going forward. Emotions are natural; however, very dangerous. Because people rely on emotions, rather than information (mental), to make brand decisions, the emotional responses to ads are more influential on a person’s intent going forward, than on the content of an ad. Advertisers play on your emotions to control your behaviors going forward. So, what does this have to do with white supremacy? Well the ganger rap/rappers that they push in our community, plays to our emotions: We listen at gatherings, events, cookouts etc.—places and situations where we are happy. https://www.bittermedicineblogs.com – On today’s show we have a discussion with filmmaker Gunnar Dessources, concerning the process of making a film, telling Black-centric stories, and what it was like filming his directorial film debut “The Raging Elephant”. The Raging Elephant Synopsis: Jean Negus Peralte and Nehunda Winnie Kandake are a typical African-American, loving couple, who live in and love NYC. They enjoy every facet of NYC without, however, really paying attentions to the ugly side of Brooklyn. That all changes one day at a house party they attend; when neighbors called 911 due to loud hip-hop music. Two rogue police officers enter the home and immediately became confrontational with the partygoers. The officers aggressively manhandle a young lady, and Nehunda tries to defuse the situation, only to be brutally accosted herself. When her lover, Jean, tries to intervene, he was assaulted and arrested. Ultimately, the corrupt judicial system allows Jean’s abusers to go free and now they want revenge. For the gross injustice, Jean wants revenge too. By any means necessary, Jean Negus will get his vengeance!! About the Director: “The Raging Elephant” is the directorial debut of Gunnar Dessources. Gunnar hails from Port-au Prince, Haiti. He came to the U.S. in 1991, where he was raised in Brooklyn, New York. He attended Midwood High school and later double-majored in Psychology and Film Studies at Brooklyn College, earning a degree in 2003. Ten years later, in 2013, Gunnar returned to college, earning a Film Production degree. Currently, Gunnar is enrolled in an M.F.A program at Saint Francis College. Mr. Dessources aims to produce culturally relevant literature and films. As a Caribbean native, hailing from the island of Haiti, and now living in the diaspora within the U.S., Gunnar noticed that his culture is noticeably absent in the educational curriculum and cinematic sector. As a firm believer an Sankofa, a West African Adinkra symbol represented by a bird with its head turned backwards taking an egg off its own back; meant to symbolize retrieving what was taken from us or what you has been lost and to bring it back and preserve it, Gunnar wants to resurrect the love stories of Ogoun and Yemaya; the war between Set and Ausar of Kemet; the cunning ways Of Koikou; Anansi the spider; the adventures of the mischievous Ti Malice and Bouki in the Haitian folklore; and the riddles and the proverbs of old. Gunnar wants to bring forth and amalgamate these things into our present daily lives, in order to secure and protect the future. Listen to learn more. https://www.bittermedicineblogs.com – On today’s show we discuss Gentrification. Gentrification is a white way of saying Ethnic Cleansing and Genocide. We begin the conversation with a discussion of recent events where 2 Philadelphia Black men were arrested in a Starbucks for being black. In case you don’t know: Places like Starbucks, Whole Foods, and Trader Joes stores are heralds for gentrification. By the time you see one of these stores pop-up in your neighborhood, it’s no longer yours. Ethnic cleansing is an attempt to get rid of members of an unwanted ethnic/racial group to establish an ethnically/racially homogenous geographic area. Genocide is intent on physical destruction of racial groups. The two often go hand in hand and, for us, are one in the same. We go through the ten (10) stages of genocide then apply them, as a case study of sorts, to the climate of Ferguson, Missouri around the time of Mike Brown’s murder at the hands of the KKKop, Darren Wilson. https://www.bittermedicineblogs.com – On today’s show we discuss EGO. Ego is a person’s sense of self-esteem or self-importance. It is where one pursues their dreams and ambition, often leaving suffering and destruction in its wake. Historically we Africans come from the collective consciousness of the tribe; no individual self. Our identity was a group identity; part of nature and the universe. Technology changed this: as we created new tools and technology it allowed individuals to change the natural world to their liking. Once the individual was formed, ego followed soon after. The savage European learned from the African. We gave them the tools and technology that gave them individualism and later, ego; a deadly combination for those people that the savage ego led Europeans to believe they were superior to. We must actively neutralize the savage ego of the European. But first, we must destroy the petty ego of our own, as well as some of the savageness we display to our own kind. Listen to learn more. They don’t discuss I.Q. scores with each other. The goal of I.Q. tests is to measure intelligence and thus academic potential and likelihood for success. It’s a known fact that intelligence is affected by environmental factors; something that the I.Q. test does not account for. See the issue? Furthermore, the test is limited in that it doesn’t measure emotional and social intelligence. In fact, emotional and social intelligence which are empathy and common sense/street smarts, respectively, are more in tune with African thought and customs. We are a practical people that gain our knowledge mostly from what’s happening around us. We learn success and failure in social settings. White folks have serious deficits in these types of intelligence and their I.Q. test totally ignores this, making the I.Q. test fundamentally European. Ask yourself: How well would white folks do with an African-centered I.Q. test? That said, the I.Q. test can still be useful for identifying learning needs. Not only is it important to make policies for the here and now, but it is very important to be prepared -now- for making policy changes in the future. Our Think Tanks need to scientifically study black life and history, and use the data to inform our society on how to make BETTER DECISIONS. The Bitter Medicine Podcast has a Think Tank on WhatsApp with this goal in mind. Mo’Nique Speaks On Netflix, Gender & Racial Equality And Our Alternative To Boycotting

https://www.bittermedicineblogs.com – On today’s show we discuss the recent revelation by comedienne Mo’Nique of receiving a low-ball offer from Netflix to do a stand-up special on their platform. The Academy Award winner is calling out Netflix for allegedly offering her $500K for a stand-up comedy special while offering millions to Amy Schumer, Dave Chappelle, and Chris Rock. Mo’Nique is asking the community to boycott Netflix. Amy Schumer was initially offered $11 million from Netflix and later renegotiated $13 million upon learning the disparity between her and Dave Chappelle’s, as well as Chris Rock’s contracts. Clearly Netflix had no issue negotiating a deal with Schumer, so why not something similar for Mo’Nique? Additionally, since her call for a boycott, Wanda Sykes has joined in saying she was offered less than half of Mo’Nique’s $500K. Mo’Nique’s argument has some validity, but not necessarily convincing enough to have the community boycott Netflix. We explain why and provide an alternative to you boycotting Netflix. https://www.bittermedicineblogs.com – On today’s show we discuss how Blacks globally need to put more effort into STEM field representation. STEM stands for Science Technology Engineering & Mathematics. The STEM field is responsible for over half of the growth of the U.S. economy since WW2. By becoming more STEM centered, we can boost the economics of the Black community in similar ways by creating jobs with higher than average salaries; lower black unemployment rates by creating quality support jobs that are not in technology; and by creating jobs that are flexible, via the Internet, which would allow us to bridge with similar STEM centered economies in Africa. Additionally, Africa needs to become self-determined as well around this concept of investing in STEM to build economy. There are obstacles. The first obstacle starts with us, as Black people. https://www.bittermedicineblogs.com – On today’s show we briefly discuss the history of snake oil salesmen; con artist; hustlers in the conscious community of Black society. Generally, the hustler is the worst of Black society and can be even more devastating in the conscious community. Malcolm X, a former hustler, had the following to say about hustlers: “And because I had been a hustler, I knew better than all whites knew, and better than nearly all of the black 'leaders' knew, that actually the most dangerous black man in America was the ghetto hustler. Why do I say this? The hustler, out there in the ghetto jungles, has less respect for the white power structure than any other Negro in North America. The ghetto hustler is internally restrained by nothing. He has no religion, no concept of morality, no civic responsibility, no fear--nothing. To survive, he is out there constantly preying upon others, probing for any human weakness like a ferret. The ghetto hustler is forever frustrated, restless, and anxious for some 'action'. Whatever he undertakes, he commits himself to it fully, absolutely. What makes the ghetto hustler yet more dangerous is his 'glamour' image to the school-dropout youth in the ghetto. These ghetto teen-agers see the hell caught by their parents struggling to get somewhere, or see that they have given up struggling in the prejudiced, intolerant white man’s world. The ghetto teen-agers make up their own minds they would rather be like the hustlers whom they see dressed ‘sharp’ and flashing money and displaying no respect for anybody or anything. So the ghetto youth become attracted to the hustler worlds of dope, thievery, prostitution, and general crime and immorality.” ― Malcolm X, The Autobiography of Malcolm X Pay attention to the characteristics of a hustler that Malcolm X describes and ask yourself if you see these qualities in lot of the people within the conscious community, currently perpetrating beefs. We never demanded that these people rise up through the ranks of an organization like the late elders, Martin Luther King Jr., Malcolm X, Kwame Toure, Marcus Garvey and others did. www.bittermedicineblogs.com – In a recently leaked document, it has been revealed that the FBI has once again declared war on the conscious Black community. The FBI has been running a secret domestic surveillance program under the name COINTELPRO (counterintelligence program) for over 70 years. Its aim has been to monitor and "neutralize" domestic groups deemed to be a danger to national security. However, it seems the only group they really monitor is the Black Nationalist/ Black conscious community- a racist, white supremacist motivation. Clearly, the purpose of the FBI is to scare Black people in general; to frighten and possibly even kill Black people who want to make change. In today’s broadcast, we discuss the racist FBI history towards Blacks in America while unpacking the recent blog (www.bittermedicineblogs.com) by author Onitaset Kumat, titled, ‘The Coded Messages behind the FBI’s “Black Identity Extremist” Document’ (https://goo.gl/YaGhZR). Onitaset does a splendid job of breaking down and revealing the FBI code held within its 12-page report. Per the report, “The FBI assesses it is very likely incidents of alleged police abuse against African Americans since then (the murder of Mike Brown) have continued to feed the resurgence in ideologically motivated, violent criminal activity within the BIE movement”. www.bittermedicineblogs.com – On this day, Columbus Day, we discuss President Donald J. Trump’s Columbus Day address. The President stated: “Five hundred and twenty-five years ago, Christopher Columbus completed an ambitious and daring voyage across the Atlantic Ocean to the Americas. The voyage was a remarkable and then-unparalleled feat that helped launch the age of exploration and discovery. The permanent arrival of Europeans to the Americas was a transformative event that undeniably and fundamentally changed the course of human history and set the stage for the development of our great Nation. Therefore, on Columbus Day, we honor the skilled navigator and man of faith, whose courageous feat brought together continents and has inspired countless others to pursue their dreams and convictions -- even in the face of extreme doubt and tremendous adversity. More than five centuries after his initial voyage, we remember the "Admiral of the Ocean Sea" for building the critical first link in the strong and enduring bond between the United States and Europe. While Isabella I and Ferdinand II of Spain sponsored his historic voyage, Columbus was a native of the City of Genoa, in present day Italy, and represents the rich history of important Italian American contributions to our great Nation. There can be no doubt that American culture, business, and civic life would all be much less vibrant in the absence of the Italian American community. We also take this opportunity to reaffirm our close ties to Columbus's country of birth, Italy. Italy is a strong ally and a valued partner in promoting peace and promoting prosperity around the world. In commemoration of Christopher Columbus's historic voyage, the Congress, by joint resolution of April 30, 1934, and modified in 1968 (36 U.S.C. 107), as amended, has requested the President proclaim the second Monday of October of each year as "Columbus Day." NOW, THEREFORE, I, DONALD J. TRUMP, President of the United States of America, by virtue of the authority vested in me by the Constitution and the laws of the United States, do hereby proclaim October 9, 2017, as Columbus Day. I call upon the people of the United States to observe this day with appropriate ceremonies and activities. I also direct that the flag of the United States be displayed on all public buildings on the appointed day in honor of our diverse history and all who have contributed to shaping this Nation. IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand this sixth day of October, in the year of our Lord two thousand seventeen, and of the Independence of the United States of America the two hundred and forty-second.” -- DONALD J. TRUMP As you can see, Trump shared many kind words about the holiday’s honoree but made no mention of the explorer’s impact on Indigenous People. Past presidents, while praising Columbus, have still acknowledged the atrocities that Columbus committed on the kind people he met in the New World. But this is no surprise. In fact, many white people celebrate on Columbus Day the history of their ancestors being savages. Columbus Day is a day where they celebrate European conquest, and claim how Europeans were better at conquest, smarter, and stronger than everyone else. And they are unapologetic about all of it. These are today's gentrifiers. Listen to learn more. www.bittermedicineblogs.com – In this episode, we discuss the super Hollywood producer, Harvey Weinstein. Weinstein has been accused of having sexually inappropriate behavior towards women in a recent scathing New York Times article. Weinstein's alleged sexually inappropriate behavior with women in the last 30 years was detailed in the Times report published Thursday. Since the initial report, other women have come forward with similar accusations, but Hollywood has been silent for the most part—unlike when Bill Cosby initially faced his accusations. And even with these accusations, white society finds a way to paint Weinstein in a positive light! Did they do the same for Cosby? The point here is for Black folks to once again recognize what it looks like to remain on code. In all the accusations, there is little to no mention of pursuing a trial against Harvey Weinstein. In fact, Lisa Bloom, the daughter of Gloria Allred, who are both infamous for representing sexually abused women against high powered, alleged abusers – especially when the accused abuser is a Black man- was representing and coaching Weinstein at the onset of these accusations! She recently quit, but only because it likely would hurt her business if she continued at his side. Hollywood has long had a “play for pay” standard, which white society always understood. That understanding goes out of the door when the accused is Black. The Black community needs to learn to stop taking the moral high ground and seeking fairness. Fairness is for losers. Jim Brown: A Heroes Journey To Villainhood

http://www.bittermedicineblogs.com -- Our once beloved Jim Brown has ascended to being a true villain and protagonist in the Black community. Much like Anikan Skywalker who started out one with the force and slowly went over to the "Dark Side" , Jim Brown has gone from unapologetic civil rights activist to pansy for white supremacy. In fact, we call him Jim Clown now. Remember Harvey Dent's, a.k.a Two-Face, quote from the Dark Knight? "You either die a hero, or live long enough to see yourself become the villain." This has happened to Jim Brown, as well as others from the Civil Rights era. In 1967, Jim Brown led the Cleveland Summit, a group of high profile African American athletes who gathered to decide whether or not to stand together and support Muhammad Ali. Earlier that year Ali refused being drafted into the U.S. military on the grounds of his objections to the Vietnam War, due to his religious beliefs as a member of the Nation of Islam. In that moment, Jim Brown (as well as his cohorts) showed that athletes could be political. He was a hero to the Black community. That was then. Since then, Jim Brown has spent decades being accused of beating women (which he admits to) and fighting rape accusations. Despite having done positive work in the Black community over the years, like working with inner city gang members, the Hall of Fame Running Back has not been a model Black citizen, yet no one talks about it! In the Black community, we are taught to respect our elders; often times blindly. In America, we are taught to exalt ANYONE who claims to have marched with Dr. King, like when people wanted to give Bernie Sanders a chance after learning he marched with MLK. Sadly, many of these Civil Rights Era activists have lived long enough to see themselves become the villain. In 2016, NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick gained national attention when he began protesting by not standing while the United States national anthem was being performed before the start of games, due to the police brutality of people of color in the U.S. He is currently being punished for his silent protest, as no NFL team has signed him. In 2016, prior to the election of Donald Trump, Jim Brown stood 100% with the quarterback. Afterwards, when Trump was elected, Jim Brown supported him. Mind you, Trump has been propped up by white supremacists! Suddenly, Jim Brown doesn't support Kaepernick's protest. Jim "Clown" has gone all the way to the "Dark Side" now. Listen to find out more. Closing the Breast Feeding Gap and White Supremacy

www.bittermedicineblogs.com – A recent New York Times article, “Working to Close the Breast Feeding Gap” totally surprised us! In it, the article says that Black women are not encouraged to nurse as much as white women, due to the history of their own mothers not breast feeding them. Shockingly, Black newborns are nine times more likely than white babies to get formula in hospitals. Initially, white women led the charge to raise their children on baby formula, and Black women followed suit. However, at some point white women ditched baby formula, realizing “breast is best”, but Black women did not follow. It should be noted: White women leading the charge towards feeding babies with baby formula is rooted in Slavery. Many Black women today shun breast feeding because it reminds them of days gone by, during slavery, when Black women were forced to not only work the fields, but also be wet nurses to white families. We examine the reasons why there isn’t more lactation assistance in our community; Black women’s traumatic history with being wet nurses to their oppressor’s children; the pros and cons of breast feeding from both a scientific and metaphysical stance; and we relate all of this to why white supremacy discourages breast feeding in the Black community. www.bittermedicineblogs.com – We discuss the recent white nationalist (alt-right) protest at the University of Virginia (Charlottesville) over the decision to remove a statue of Confederate, General Robert E. Lee, from a downtown park. But its more than just the removal of a statue! It’s also about white identity and advocating whiteness. The alt-right are white supremacists that go beyond basic conservativism (i.e. the tradition of whiteness). The alt-right are essentially the media and propaganda arm of white racism and white supremacists thought. They comprise of young, white, college educated males. Its most notable members are Steve Bannon, a Trump advisor and strategist; and Richard B. Spencer, president of National Policy Institute, a white nationalist think tank. We breakdown a past speech of Richard B. Sherman’s and reveal our admiration for his outlook. Our admiration is like the admiration the Hon. Marcus Garvey held for Mussolini and Hitler who each pushed a brand of nationalist leadership in their respective countries. Nationalism restores nations pride and Garvey felt that Blacks could use a dose of this to rehabilitate themselves and Africa. We also read the Hon. Marcus Garvey’s essay, “African Fundamentalism”, written almost 100 years ago yet still rings true for the Black community now. Taken together with the alt-rights ideology (and flipping it) of identity above all else, recognizing our greatness, and seeing fairness as a losers’ mentality, we advocate fighting fire with fire and establishing an ALT-BLACK movement. Most Black folks prefer to play along to get along; sing kumbaya, and have their head in the clouds as opposed to being unapologetically Black and savage in our endeavor for liberation. 1804: The Haitian Revolution and Identifying You Enemies Today

www.bittermedicineblogs.com -- The Haitian Revolution (1791 - 1804) marked the end of slavery and French control. The Haitian Revolution was directly influenced by the French Revolution (1789) and the innate desire of kidnapped and subjugated (Black/African/Haitian) people to be free. The French endured an absolute monarchy (King Louis XVI) and an overall feudal system, that left the country nearly bankrupt, and saw its citizens (poor and peasantry) heavily taxed. The poor and peasantry rioted and looted, resulting in 17,000+ people being killed. Their actions were not random: they looted and burned the homes of tax collectors, landlords, and the elite. Blacks in Amerikkka can learn from this! Attack them, their belongings, and where THEY stay -- NOT where YOU stay. The turmoil led to the "Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen", a document/declaration to replace the old ways with a system based on equal opportunity, representation, freedom of speech etc., but it did not really work, as it led to more turmoil. This turmoil saw the demise of King Louis and his wife, Marie Antoinette, aNd ultimately led to the rise of Napoleon Bonaparte and the Napoleonic Era of dominance in Europe. Haiti, at the time known as Saint Dominique, was France's wealthiest overseas colony due to sugar, coffee, indigo, and cotton- all produced by slave labor. As with all such economies, there are interest groups. Haiti had 5 such interest groups: White masters (the Haitian Elite), petit blancs (Poorer whites, usually teachers shopkeepers etc.), Free Blacks (of which 50% were mulatto, and most wealthier than the petit blancs), Slaves, and Runaways/Maroons. The White slave masters (Elites) were at odds with France due to the heavy taxation and lack of representation in France, when they were contributing a lot to France's coffers, so they wanted Independence from France. However, they wanted to continue slavery, which would see them still make lots of money with none going to France, and France wouldn't have that. The Elites of Haiti would gain some autonomy in the country when the "Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen" came to be, but the "Declaration" excluded the poor whites. It did afford some autonomy to Free Blacks, which the poor whites hated. Thus a 3-way war was born between White masters/ Elites vs. petit blancs/poor whites vs. Free Blacks. However, the Black slave population was the majority in Haiti, and they were at war with all three of the mentioned groups! The slave population of Haiti identified their enemies and the Black (slave?) population today needs to do the same. Listen to find out more! Discussing the School-to-Prison Pipeline with Jason Edgar

www.bittermedicineblogs.com -- Today’s episode discusses the shift in recent years, within our education system, away from traditional disciplinary actions (counseling, detention etc.) when students misbehave in school, to suspensions, expulsions, and law enforcement to punish students. Children are actually being arrested and removed from schools for minor discretions, at alarming rates around the country. However, all children are not receiving these punishments equally: Race differences are present. Many reasons are often proposed by the dominant society, and usually those reasons exclude racial bias as a cause. Some claim school safety is the reason, after the Columbine shootings in 1999; some claim the increased level of punishment is to rid the schools of bad performers, so as to improve school stats etc., but how can these be the reasons when mostly Black children are being affected? Statistics show (PBS: https://goo.gl/UBQ7SM) 40% of students expelled each year are black; 70% of in-school arrests are Black & Latino students; Black students are 3.5 times more likely to be suspended than whites for the SAME offences; and Black & Latino students are twice as likely not o graduate high school than white students. Add to this that Black & Latino people make up 61% of the prison population, while only making up 30% of the U.S. population; that 1 out 3 Black males, and 1 out of 6 Latino males will be incarcerated in their lifetime. From these statistics alone, it is not hard to see that the criminalizing of Black, and even Latino, children in the school system is leading them to prison.
