This year, we are the Earth. We're feeling good about the activism we have tried, but the Earth creates our direct action with the radical example of the Evolution of Species. And that is a Hell of Fierce Thing. We will fly over, dig under, camouflage in plain sight. We will grow claws, fins, re-growable tails and distributed intelligence like Octopuses. The government's and corporations cannot find the money to banish us. No militarized border, no fascist hysteria, no passive consumerism can hold back the uprising of the Earth. EARTHALUJAH!   Welcome to this week's Earth Riot, produced by Jason Candler. Mexican standoff: Out-Of-Home sector hits agency slow lane on take-up for neuro impact versus attention metrics; Avenue C's Pia Coyle implores buyers and sellers to get over pricing fear paralysis

Attention measurement has captured much of the ad industry's focus in the past two years just as the out-of-home industry body, OMA, was well into its roadmap to apply a “Neuro Impact Factor” to thousands of individual digital and static screens. Neuro-Insight, the firm behind the measurement system, has among the most robust, academically peer-reviewed advertising science worldwide – initially developed by Professor Richard Silberstein and neuroscientists at Swinburne University's Brain Sciences Institute to understand brain behaviour among ADD and ADHD children. Despite the science – real advertising science as its proponents argue – media agencies are dragging the chain on take-up, certainly versus emerging and scaled attention metrics. But here's why the industry needs both and what should happen next according to Avenue C's Pia Coyle, Neuro-Insight's Peter Pynta and the OMA's Grant Guesdon.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Wooden Structures in the Downtown Business District | Fire Limits Wooden structures such as this are scarce around the downtown area as most buildings in the downtown business district were required to be fortified against fire throughout the 1800s. While most of the Galveston‘s downtown district buildings are made of brick and cast-iron, very few remain that remind us of an old west town. When Galveston was founded in 1839 many of the buildings and homes would've been crude one or two room structures. Almost all of them would've been made from imported wood as Galveston was barren at the time. Galveston had an economic boom through the mid-1800s. Structures such as this would've been a typical sight until fire prevention in the city became a priority. Fires became a real problem in the central business district as they could decimate multiple blocks and severely impact the economy. In 1855 city and business leaders decided that only fireproof buildings were to be built in the central business district between 25th St. and 18th St. and from the Port to Avenue C, AKA mechanic Street. These were the initial fire limits for fireproof buildings. This meant that wood and other flammable materials were not allowed to be used when building commercial structures in the downtown area. Some buildings were grandfathered in and others had to update their buildings in order to meet the code. Brick, steel, and iron became new common materials used to build in the downtown and Port area. Galveston Fire limits expanded every few years until 1932. This may explain in part why Galveston no longer resembles an old wild west town in the downtown area. However keep an eye out there are a few wooden building still remaining.Interested in information covered in this episode? Art in Odd Places (AiOP) presents visual and performance art in unexpected public spaces. AiOP also produces an annual festival along 14th Street in Manhattan, NYC from Avenue C to the Hudson River each October. https://artinoddplaces.org/story/ Mission Art in Odd Places aims to stretch the boundaries of communication in the public realm by presenting artworks in all disciplines outside the confines of traditional public space regulations. AiOP reminds us that public spaces function as the epicenter for diverse social interactions and the unfettered exchange of ideas. History Art in Odd Places (AiOP) began as an action by a group of artists led by Ed Woodham to encourage local participation in the Cultural Olympiad of the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta. In 2005, after moving back to New York City, he re imagined it as a response to the dwindling of public space and personal civil liberties – first in the Lower East Side and East Village, and since 2008, on 14th Street in Manhattan. AiOP has always been a grassroots project fueled by the goodwill and inventiveness of its participants. AiOP 2022: STORY OPEN CALL FOR PROPOSALS Art in Odd Places invites proposals for its seventeenth annual public art and performance festival taking place along 14th Street in Manhattan, NY – from Avenue C to the Hudson River this fall. “Obstacles are put in our way, not to stop us, but to call out our courage and strength.” ― Unknown Today, public personal merit is based on the number of followers on social media – and relevance changes with the shifting weather. True identity and community are where words are genuinely heard, truths shared, stories told, and perceptions possibly changed. Is it feasible to change others' perceptions? Finding meaning in life is a collective universal truth. The pursuit of meaning can be lost in the static of the passionate necessity to search. One's narrative writes itself. Every insurmountable obstacle, laugh, devastation, tear, scar, heartbreak, familiarity, and inexperience is a chapter. If executed with fearless honesty and mindful intent – change is possible. Will the story of your existence endure the test of time? Art in Odd Places(AiOP) 2022: STORY scheduled for September 23-25, 2022, curated by Jessica Elaine Blinkhorn invites proposals for its seventeenth annual public art and performance festival taking place along 14th Street in Manhattan, NY – from Avenue C to the Hudson River. Art in Odd Places 2022: STORY seeks imaginative proposals by artists from the Disabled, BIPOC, LGBTQ+, and Allied communities that tell her, his, their STORY (Community. Identity. Endurance. Merit. Perception). Jessica Elain Blinkhorn, Who Am I Who Are You? ABOUT THE CURATOR: Jessica Elaine Blinkhorn was diagnosed with Spinal Muscular Atrophy very young. The muscle wasting disease has left her as a wheelchair user but she uses living with a disability to inform her work and educate society about differences. She began to explore Performance Art in Graduate School to assist with creating and constructing a social narrative to promote change, equity, and inclusion. She has been featured on ABC World News(2010), was the subject of the award-winning documentary short “Grounded by Reality”(2010), and has received grants from Change, Inc., FL(2012), Artist Fellowship Grant, NY(2013, 2014, 2015, 2021), Foundation for the Contemporary Arts, NY(2018, 2020, 2021), C4 Atlanta, GA(2020). Blinkhorn is an AiOP veteran(2018, 2021) and most recently, was named a Franklin Furnace Awardee, NY(2019-20), Artist in Residence at the Momentary, AR(2020), Artist in Residence for the Paseo Project, NM(2021), Atlanta BeltLine Artist, GA(2021-22), and an ELEVATE Artist, GA(2021).

James Maddock (born 1962) is a British singer-songwriter and performing musician. Originally from Countesthorpe, Leicester, UK, Maddock has been based in New York City since 2003 after signing with Columbia Records. Maddock's first public success in the U.S. was with his band Wood, whose album "Songs from Stamford Hill" produced multiple songs appearing on the hit TV show "Dawson's Creek," including the Top 5 single "Stay You." Maddock, though British, is largely associated with the Americana music style and has performed with Bruce Springsteen, Willie Nile and David Immerglück of the band Counting Crows.
