On today's show, Diane Gentile tells the story of how she got into the music industry and went from managing other artists to becoming a talented singer-songwriter working on her own music. Diane offers an inside look into her writing process, shares some details of her experience recovering from being injured in a freak car accident in 2018, and performs a couple of live songs: WALK WITH ME and JOE. GUEST OVERVIEW: Diane Gentile is a singer-songwriter, musician, and music industry professional based in New York City. Melody Maker Magazine says, "Gentile's work is one of the rare examples of songwriting capable of meaning all things to all listeners." She recently released her 3rd album, THE BAD AND THE BEAUTIFUL, with her band Diane & The Gentle Men. The album is a scrapbook of vignettes featuring endearing but poetically flawed protagonists sketched with Diane's literate flair and doused in classic NYC rock n' roll swagger. It features a duet with Alejandro Escovedo, an appearance by James Maddock, and a song produced by Jesse Malin. Previously, she released THE WHITE SEA, with the classic song "Motorcycle", produced by The Dream Syndicates' Steve Wynn, which became a hit on Little Steven's Underground Garage. Diane has also worked as a record company executive, music venue manager, artist manager, and journalist. https://www.dianegentile.com/

Acclaimed author Warren Zanes launched his incredible new book DELIVER ME FROM NOWHERE - THE MAKING OF BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN'S NEBRASKA with a powerful concert and reading, co-produced by Outpost in the Burbs and the Montclair Literary Festival in May 2023. A few days later Zanes held a discussion on the book with the Outpost's John Hammond at Watchung Books in Montclair. This podcast features that discussion in full, where Warren recounts his working directly with Springsteen to dig into the depths of his creativity and motivation that resulted in the unique NEBRASKA album release. In addition, we're glad to feature three live performances from the launch concert - Laura Cantrell's 'Used Cars,' James Maddock's 'Born in the USA (Nebraska Version),' and Steve Earle's 'State Trooper.'   The chat was recorded live at the bookstore in intimate surroundings - thanks to our ace podcast mixer John Paul Uva for cleaning up the room audio for your listening. My guest today is Ben Rubin a producer, mixer, bassist, and composer in Brooklyn NY. Whether he's melding hip-hop and jazz with legends like Masta Ace and Donny McCaslin, playing upright bass at the Newport Jazz Festival with Dred Scott Trio, remixing Karsh Kale or WuTang's Killah Priest, rockin' on electric bass with Marshall Crenshaw, or producing Peter Bernstein solo jazz guitar, Grammy-nominated producer/(re)mixer/bassist/composer Ben Rubin (aka Benny Cha Cha) is renowned for making records that are pure or genre-bending or both. Picked seven times as a “Rising Star Producer” in DownBeat Magazine's International Critics' Poll, Rubin has well over 100 album credits to his name. Lately, he has been working with a diversity of artists including Queen Esther, Erik Deutsch & Theo Bleckmann, Steve Conte (New York Dolls), Stripmall Ballads, Rachel Eckroth (St Vincent), Lower Power, Caleb Wheeler Curtis, Drifter feat. Lucy Woodward, Buzzed Armstrong, and Jon Irabagon, as well as labels like Ropeadope, Sunnyside and Imani. Most recently, Rubin's attention has focused on Analog Players Society at the Bridge Studio in Brooklyn with APS founder Amon Drum creating cut-up hip-hop instrumental records and jazz albums released on Ropeadope and described by Downbeat Magazine as “truly compelling.” featuring legendary Juice Crew MC Masta Ace described as “in the direct lineage of classics like A Tribe Called Quest's Low-End Theory, and Guru's Jazzmatazz.” Bens production and mixing credits include Walking Distance feat. Jason Moran, Grammy nominated composer/pianist Emilio Solla, and many recordings for Smalls Live Records releasing more than 30 records with jazz greats including Larry Goldings, Louis Hayes, Tom Harrell, Johnny O'Neal, Chris Potter, Tim Ries, Roy Hargrove, Mulgrew Miller, Seamus Blake, and Cyrille Aimeé to name just a few. As a bassist, Ben has toured and recorded both upright and electric bass with a diversity of artists, including Dred Scott Trio, Patti Smith, James Maddock, Courtney Love, Mary J. Blige, Moby, Bill Frisell, and his own acclaimed, genre-bending band Mudville which I believe my brother Nate played in at one point. Ben has also composed scores for features and short films, including director Nelson Kim's feature film debut, Someone Else, which premiered at the Miami International Film Festival in 2015. James Maddock (born 1962) is a British singer-songwriter and performing musician. Originally from Countesthorpe, Leicester, UK, Maddock has been based in New York City since 2003 after signing with Columbia Records. Maddock's first public success in the U.S. was with his band Wood, whose album "Songs from Stamford Hill" produced multiple songs appearing on the hit TV show "Dawson's Creek," including the Top 5 single "Stay You." Maddock, though British, is largely associated with the Americana music style and has performed with Bruce Springsteen, Willie Nile and David Immerglück of the band Counting Crows. Maddock has since become a solo artist with several albums, including "Sunrise on Avenue C" (2009) which won the 2010/11 NY Music Award for Best Americana Album. Join us as we talk to James Maddock about his new release "No time to cry" ! Recorded in Brooklyn and Vail, Colorado in 2019. No Time to Cry  is the latest effort from a master of the genre.  A rock & roll lifer, James Maddock has been carving his unique path since the 1980s, when the British-born singer/songwriter kicked off his career with a raw, soulful voice; a storyteller's sense of narrative; and the ability to blur the lines between folk, classic pop, and rock.  Since those early days in London, he's ridden the wave of a music industry that's ebbed, flowed, peaked, and crashed. Maddock has stayed afloat throughout the entire ride, enjoying a brush with commercial success during the late 1990s — including a major-label record deal, a Top 5 AAA radio hit, and a song placement on Dawson's Creek — before transforming himself into an independent solo artist during the decades that followed. Bruce Springsteen is a fan. So is David Letterman. Listening to Maddock's newest release , No Timd To Cry , it's easy to see the appeal.

In a press release, Nile says of the album, The music always lifts my spirits, and that’s what these songs do for me and it’s why I wrote them. Hopefully they can lift others’ spirits as well. Children of Paradise is co-produced by Nile and Grammy-winner and longtime collaborator Stewart Lerman (Elvis Costello/Patti Smith/Norah Jones). The album features such timely compositions as Seeds of a Revolution, All Dressed Up and No Place to Go, Don’t, Earth Blues and Gettin’ Ugly Out There. Lookin’ for Someone  was co-written with longtime friend Andrew Dorff, who wrote country hits for the likes of Blake Shelton, Tim McGraw, Dierks Bentley and Kenny Chesney. Dorff died unexpectedly shortly after the song was written, and Nile has dedicated Children of Paradise to him. Along with Nile on acoustic and electric guitars and piano, the record features Nile’s longstanding live band: guitarist Matt Hogan, bassist Johnny Pisano, and drummer Jon Weber. The sessions also featured guitarist/multi-instrumentalist Steuart Smith (Eagles/Rosanne Cash/Rodney Crowell), keyboardist Andy Burton (John Mayer/Rufus Wainwright/Ian Hunter) and backing vocals by r singer-songwriter James Maddock, Leslie Mendelson (Bob Weir) and Frankie Lee.
