Donate (no account necessary) | Subscribe (account required) Join Bryan Dean Wright, former CIA Operations Officer, as he dives into today's top stories shaping America and the world. In this episode of The Wright Report, Bryan covers Democrats' sweeping election victories, Trump's call to end the Senate filibuster, the possibility of an end to the historic government shutdown, cartel violence in Mexico, and Trump's warning about nuclear weapons testing. Democrats Sweep Elections Nationwide: It was a strong night for Democrats across the country. In Virginia, they won the governor's mansion, attorney general, and 13 new House seats — a political "bloodbath," as local analysts called it. Former CIA officer Abigail Spanberger became governor, while Jay Jones — who once joked about killing a Republican lawmaker and his children — was elected attorney general. Bryan warns these results reveal a growing radicalism within the Left that Americans can't afford to ignore. New York City Elects Its First Socialist Mayor: Zohran Mamdani won handily with foreign-born voters and young progressives, promising free housing, gun bans, and state control over industries. Bryan compares his victory to a "virus of humanity" spreading nationwide, warning that socialism's false promise of "free for all" could gain traction if Republicans fail to deliver economic results. Trump Pushes to End the Filibuster: President Trump renewed his call to eliminate the Senate filibuster after the Democratic sweep, urging Republicans to "terminate it" to pass voter reform and economic bills. Bryan argues that fears of Democrats abusing power later are misplaced — "that horse has already left the barn." Shutdown Nearing Resolution: Ten Democrat senators are now willing to negotiate a deal to reopen the government, marking the longest shutdown in U.S. history. A short-term plan could fund the military while delaying fights over Obamacare subsidies until December. Mexico's Cartel War and Trump's Dilemma: After the murder of Michoacán's mayor by the Jalisco cartel, Trump is weighing covert CIA and special forces operations inside Mexico. Bryan says the President is torn between patience and decisive action — and both paths carry enormous risk. Nuclear Testing and Rising Tensions: The U.S. will restart nuclear weapons testing for the first time since the 1990s, citing proof that Russia and China are secretly conducting their own tests. Bryan explains how new nuclear-powered cruise missiles and underwater drones are reshaping the global threat landscape.   "And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free." - John 8:32     Keywords: 2025 election results Democrats sweep, Abigail Spanberger governor Virginia, Jay Jones attorney general threat scandal, Zohran Mamdani socialist NYC mayor, Trump filibuster termination call, U.S. government shutdown negotiations, Michoacán mayor cartel murder, Trump CIA operations Mexico, U.S. nuclear testing restart, Russia China cruise missile Poseidon drone

From the potential rollback of marriage equality to the normalization of authoritarian control, this episode sounds the alarm on the collapse of Republican restraint and the rise of a Trump America. For thirty-three years, the United States has unilaterally refrained from conducting even very-low-yield underground tests of our aging arsenal of nuclear weapons.  By relying on computer simulations and educated guesses – instead of actual, realistic experimentation, we have precluded the sort of modernization in which both Russia and China have engaged relentlessly, surely with the benefit of covert nuclear tests. Worse yet, we have seen serious and growing concerns about the reliability and effectiveness of our deterrent forces.  Dr. Mark Schneider, one of America's most competent experts on nuclear weapons policy and arms control, recently published an extraordinarily important paper laying out the case for a resumption of nuclear testing.  Fortunately, President Trump has just ordered the Department of War to start testing immediately our nuclear weapons on an equal basis with other nations.  Praise the Lord, and test the ammunition. This is Frank Gaffney.

Concerns over potential US nuclear tests have arisen after Donald Trump posted on X saying 'I have instructed the Department of War to start testing our nuclear weapons on an equal basis'. The announcement left questions about whether the US President meant testing weapons systems or actually conducting test explosions, which the United States has not done since 1992. Vice-President JD Vance failed to provide any clarification, telling reporters the President's statement “speaks for itself". US Correspondent Dan Mitchinson told Andrew Dickens he wasn't convinced the threats will be followed through- "as we know, the president tends to speak first sometimes and think after he has spoken". Lieven also addresses the controversy regarding NATO-supplied forces in Ukraine identified as extreme ethnic nationalists, particularly the Azov regiment, noting that their military importance to the defense effort makes disbanding them highly unlikely.

The episode not only dives deep into the legacy of nuclear testing but also highlights the need for further investigation into its repercussions, particularly in underrepresented areas impacted by radioactive exposure. During the conversation, Dr. Ketterer shares his findings on how eastern California, particularly the regions around Mount Whitney, has been affected by nuclear fallout in levels comparable to notorious downwind zones like St. George, Utah. He asserts that existing compensation programs, like the Radiation Exposure Compensation Act (RICA), should be expanded to include these overlooked areas. Dr. Ketterer also discusses his involvement in a mobile lab initiative that aims to map fallout across New Mexico—providing crucial data to better understand past exposures and advocate for affected communities. Key Takeaways Dr. Ketterer exhibits compelling evidence that nuclear fallout from Nevada test sites reached eastern California in significant amounts, equivalent to recognized downwind fallout areas. The episode challenges preconceived notions about nuclear test fallout only affecting designated downwind areas and calls for policy expansion to acknowledge overlooked regions. The pursuit of truth in fallout mapping is driven by sophisticated isotopic testing, identifying residual contamination in soil samples and informing future legislative action. Dr. Ketterer's work shines a light on neglected communities, emphasizing the importance of validating historical data for revising compensation and care strategies under RECA. A new mobile lab initiative, designed to bring testing capabilities directly to communities, is part of Dr. Ketterer’s latest efforts to empower citizens with real-time data and insights into their environmental health. Dr. Togzhan Kassenova is a Washington, DC-based senior fellow at SUNY-Albany's PISCES and a nonresident fellow at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace. She specializes in nuclear politics, WMD nonproliferation, strategic trade controls, sanctions, and financial crime prevention. Her current work focuses on countering proliferation financing. She holds a Ph.D. in Politics from the University of Leeds. From 2011 to 2015, she served on the UN secretary general's Advisory Board on Disarmament Matters. For this month's episode of Hypervelocity, I was joined by Dr. Togzhan Kassenova to discuss her book Atomic Steppe: How Kazakhstan Gave Up the Bomb (Stanford University Press, 2022). Togzhan's work powerfully recounts the impact of the Soviet nuclear programme on the people and nation of Kazakhstan, as well as the country's efforts to denuclearise after the collapse of the USSR—an experience that echoes the histories of other colonial nuclear testing grounds, such as Australia, the Pacific Islands, and Native American lands. What stands out in Togzhan's account are the deeply human stories of resistance, resilience, and at times, dark humour in the face of the devastating legacy of nuclear testing. Her work also challenges classic International Relations theories that treat states like ‘Kazakhstan', the ‘USSR', or the ‘United States' as black boxes of foreign policy. Instead, she highlights the agency of individuals—both among the general public, who organised anti-nuclear protest movements, and among diplomats, who built personal relationships and trust across borders to make denuclearisation possible. These efforts were crucial in helping Kazakhstan give up the nuclear weapons it inherited from the Soviet Union and chart a new path.Togzhan's writing also critiques the assumptions of game theory, demonstrating that it is possible for nations to enhance their security without resorting to the zero-sum logic of mutually assured destruction. In fact, following its decision to relinquish its nuclear arsenal, Kazakhstan emerged as a model state in upholding international law, swiftly joining agreements such as the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty and the Non-Proliferation Treaty.Later in the episode, we explore whether—given Russia's invasion of Ukraine—Kazakhstan was right to give up its nuclear weapons. Finally, we catch up on what is happening today with the survivors of the Soviet-era nuclear tests.Chapters00:00 Introduction to Toghzan Kassenova and Her Work02:10 The Impact of Nuclear Testing in Kazakhstan08:57 Kazakhstan's Decision to Denuclearize16:07 The Infrastructure of Nuclear Testing20:25 Kazakhstan's Role in Global Nuclear Disarmament29:30 The Importance of International Treaties35:17 Human Connections in Nuclear Disarmament41:31 Kazakhstan as a Model for Disarmament45:37 Reflections on Security and Nuclear Deterrence50:05 The Legacy of Nuclear Testing on Survivors55:32 Conclusion and Final Thoughts

Hostus Maximus and sometime savant Justin Fort goes full brain-dump on the kind of history that makes pre-teen kids deep-dive science for all the wrong reasons.  Obviously, when folks die because a ship full of ammonium nitrate or radical WW1-era explosives goes kablooey in the harbor, it's a damn shame, but you can't help but marvel at the sheer magnitude of serious industrial accidents (be they jet fuel, fertilizer, munitions or just leftover mine gas).  It's not just manmade disasters, though - Mother Nature (or Father Nature? Turnabout and all...) has a pretty good market for things that go BOOM too, like whole mountains and entire islands.  Join the show for an hour of train-of-thought goodness (and a reminder that mailboxes are federal property, "because you can" doesn't always mean you should, and if you want to blow stuff up, go pro and do it for a living). To max out the spicy, we've got the mine in Mike's basement, the legitimacy in Stephen King's short stories ("Langoliers" and "Night Flyer", for instance), some WW2 in Europe and the Pacific, submarines & "Das Boot", the return of the D2HIE1WHCII rule, and enough Monster Magnet to explode a horse.
