A special holiday crossover with The Bang-Bang Podcast! Van Jackson and Lyle Rubin are joined by the preeminent nuclear scholar Scott Sagan to discuss A House of Dynamite, the 2025 political thriller that imagines nuclear catastrophe not as spectacle or obvious madness, but as an orderly sequence of decisions made under crushing time pressure. Structured as interlocking vignettes rather than a single command-room drama, the film moves between the White House, STRATCOM, missile defense sites, continuity bunkers, and civilian spaces, sketching a system that largely works as designed and still produces annihilation. The film's opening establishes its governing logic. Inclination is flattening. Timelines shrink. Judgment collapses into procedure. “Nineteen minutes to impact.” “Sixteen minutes.” “Confirm impact.” Across locations, professionals do their jobs calmly while the meaning drains out of their actions. A senior officer tells a junior colleague to keep the cafeteria line moving. A staffer compiles names and Social Security numbers for the dead. Phones come out. Final calls are made. The end of the world arrives not with hysteria, but with etiquette.Much of the tension turns on probability. Missile defense is described as “hitting a bullet with a bullet.” Sixty-one percent becomes the moral threshold, a coin toss bought with billions of dollars. Baseball chatter at STRATCOM blends into DEFCON alerts. A Civil War reenactment at Gettysburg unfolds alongside real-time catastrophe, collapsing past and present forms of American mass death into a single frame.Scott is critical of the film's portrayal of nuclear command and control. He argues that its depiction of retaliatory decision-making is wrong, that no president would order nuclear strikes against loosely defined adversaries without firm attribution or confirmation, and that the film risks backfiring by encouraging faith in ever more elaborate missile defenses rather than disarmament. Lyle pushes back, questioning whether this confidence in institutional sanity is warranted, especially given the political moment. Either way, the film lands a disturbing insight. The danger is not wild irrationality, but systems that normalize impossible choices. Nuclear war here would not look like collapse. It would look like competence.Further ReadingScott's Wiki page“Just and Unjust Nuclear Deterrence” by ScottThe Limits of Safety: Organizations, Accidents, and Nuclear Weapons by Scott“Thinking and Moral Considerations” by Hannah ArendtReview of A House of Dynamite in Bulletin of Atomic Scientists by Scott and Shreya Lad“Peacecraft and the Nuclear Policy Dilemma” by Van“Fresh Hell: Unjust Nuclear Deterrence and Nuclear Testing” by Van

Donate (no account necessary) | Subscribe (account required) Join Bryan Dean Wright, former CIA Operations Officer, as he dives into today's top stories shaping America and the world. In this episode of The Wright Report, Bryan covers Democrats' sweeping election victories, Trump's call to end the Senate filibuster, the possibility of an end to the historic government shutdown, cartel violence in Mexico, and Trump's warning about nuclear weapons testing. Democrats Sweep Elections Nationwide: It was a strong night for Democrats across the country. In Virginia, they won the governor's mansion, attorney general, and 13 new House seats — a political "bloodbath," as local analysts called it. Former CIA officer Abigail Spanberger became governor, while Jay Jones — who once joked about killing a Republican lawmaker and his children — was elected attorney general. Bryan warns these results reveal a growing radicalism within the Left that Americans can't afford to ignore. New York City Elects Its First Socialist Mayor: Zohran Mamdani won handily with foreign-born voters and young progressives, promising free housing, gun bans, and state control over industries. Bryan compares his victory to a "virus of humanity" spreading nationwide, warning that socialism's false promise of "free for all" could gain traction if Republicans fail to deliver economic results. Trump Pushes to End the Filibuster: President Trump renewed his call to eliminate the Senate filibuster after the Democratic sweep, urging Republicans to "terminate it" to pass voter reform and economic bills. Bryan argues that fears of Democrats abusing power later are misplaced — "that horse has already left the barn." Shutdown Nearing Resolution: Ten Democrat senators are now willing to negotiate a deal to reopen the government, marking the longest shutdown in U.S. history. A short-term plan could fund the military while delaying fights over Obamacare subsidies until December. Mexico's Cartel War and Trump's Dilemma: After the murder of Michoacán's mayor by the Jalisco cartel, Trump is weighing covert CIA and special forces operations inside Mexico. Bryan says the President is torn between patience and decisive action — and both paths carry enormous risk. Nuclear Testing and Rising Tensions: The U.S. will restart nuclear weapons testing for the first time since the 1990s, citing proof that Russia and China are secretly conducting their own tests. Bryan explains how new nuclear-powered cruise missiles and underwater drones are reshaping the global threat landscape.   "And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free." - John 8:32     Keywords: 2025 election results Democrats sweep, Abigail Spanberger governor Virginia, Jay Jones attorney general threat scandal, Zohran Mamdani socialist NYC mayor, Trump filibuster termination call, U.S. government shutdown negotiations, Michoacán mayor cartel murder, Trump CIA operations Mexico, U.S. nuclear testing restart, Russia China cruise missile Poseidon drone

Jeff McCausland discusses the President's ambiguous remarks on nuclear testing, noting the President and Secretary of Defense seem to misunderstand nuclear strategy. Immediate warhead testing is impossible because the responsible agency, NNSA, lacks staff due to budget cuts. Today on Mea Culpa, I'm joined by Michael Steele, former RNC Chair, MSNBC analyst, and host of The Michael Steele Podcast, for a blistering breakdown of Trump's latest authoritarian moves. We dig into his push to end the Senate filibuster, the demolition of the White House's East Wing to build his ballroom, and the GOP's complicity in his escalating power grab. Steele explains how the Supreme Court has become a political enforcement arm under Trump's shadow and how his own party has lost its moral compass. From the potential rollback of marriage equality to the normalization of authoritarian control, this episode sounds the alarm on the collapse of Republican restraint and the rise of a Trump America. For thirty-three years, the United States has unilaterally refrained from conducting even very-low-yield underground tests of our aging arsenal of nuclear weapons.  By relying on computer simulations and educated guesses – instead of actual, realistic experimentation, we have precluded the sort of modernization in which both Russia and China have engaged relentlessly, surely with the benefit of covert nuclear tests. Worse yet, we have seen serious and growing concerns about the reliability and effectiveness of our deterrent forces.  Dr. Mark Schneider, one of America's most competent experts on nuclear weapons policy and arms control, recently published an extraordinarily important paper laying out the case for a resumption of nuclear testing.  Fortunately, President Trump has just ordered the Department of War to start testing immediately our nuclear weapons on an equal basis with other nations.  Praise the Lord, and test the ammunition. This is Frank Gaffney.
