In 2020, the world experienced massive change. Millions of lives were ended—and millions more upended—by the Covid-19 pandemic. The shocking police killings of Black men and women gave rise to powerful social movements and widespread collective action to rectify centuries of injustice and racism in the United States and globally. Together, these three colossal events tested the resilience of the social fabric bringing us all together. Attempting to illuminate and make sense of this new reality, photographers from around the world documented these transformational moments as they unfolded. Carefully combing through their archive, the founders of Scopio have curated these photographs to tell the story of the year 2020. It began with a collective sense of isolation and fear to eventually people coming together and protesting the social injustices that were uncovered later that year. Representing artists from around the globe, The Year Time Stopped seeks to empower us and give credence to the extraordinary circumstances that changed our world. The 200 images in this striking visual collection are indelible, impassioned, and unforgettable. Taken together, they are a singular testament to this unprecedented time. “Carter (born 1986, Dallas, Texas) is a transdisciplinary artist with a BFA from Stanford University and an MFA from Southern Methodist University. His work is presented as videos, publications, installations, and performances to encompass multi-sensorial and layered circumstances encountered by the artist. Personal interactions, media bombardment, observed and lived experiences, and material excess/waste influence his work towards a complex revolutionary promise. These are ecologically centered works often heavily linked to the material history of currency in how it relates to the histories of marginalized people. Carter is of Black and Native American heritage and views his work as a continuation of the survival and storytelling practices of these cultures. More broadly, he is interested in how these practices have analogies across cultures worldwide. Stories of origins, the afterlife, superhuman beings, and of love and tragedy are the most compelling for him. Carter creates work dealing with what these stories mean in an often violent and oppressive context and the power they have toward influencing revolutionary momentum.” https://xxavieredwardcarter.wordpress.com/about/
Art in Odd Places (AiOP) presents visual and performance art in unexpected public spaces. AiOP also produces an annual festival along 14th Street in Manhattan, NYC from Avenue C to the Hudson River each October. https://artinoddplaces.org/story/ Mission Art in Odd Places aims to stretch the boundaries of communication in the public realm by presenting artworks in all disciplines outside the confines of traditional public space regulations. AiOP reminds us that public spaces function as the epicenter for diverse social interactions and the unfettered exchange of ideas. History Art in Odd Places (AiOP) began as an action by a group of artists led by Ed Woodham to encourage local participation in the Cultural Olympiad of the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta. In 2005, after moving back to New York City, he re imagined it as a response to the dwindling of public space and personal civil liberties – first in the Lower East Side and East Village, and since 2008, on 14th Street in Manhattan. AiOP has always been a grassroots project fueled by the goodwill and inventiveness of its participants. AiOP 2022: STORY OPEN CALL FOR PROPOSALS Art in Odd Places invites proposals for its seventeenth annual public art and performance festival taking place along 14th Street in Manhattan, NY – from Avenue C to the Hudson River this fall. “Obstacles are put in our way, not to stop us, but to call out our courage and strength.” ― Unknown Today, public personal merit is based on the number of followers on social media – and relevance changes with the shifting weather. True identity and community are where words are genuinely heard, truths shared, stories told, and perceptions possibly changed. Is it feasible to change others' perceptions? Finding meaning in life is a collective universal truth. The pursuit of meaning can be lost in the static of the passionate necessity to search. One's narrative writes itself. Every insurmountable obstacle, laugh, devastation, tear, scar, heartbreak, familiarity, and inexperience is a chapter. If executed with fearless honesty and mindful intent – change is possible. Will the story of your existence endure the test of time? Art in Odd Places(AiOP) 2022: STORY scheduled for September 23-25, 2022, curated by Jessica Elaine Blinkhorn invites proposals for its seventeenth annual public art and performance festival taking place along 14th Street in Manhattan, NY – from Avenue C to the Hudson River. Art in Odd Places 2022: STORY seeks imaginative proposals by artists from the Disabled, BIPOC, LGBTQ+, and Allied communities that tell her, his, their STORY (Community. Identity. Endurance. Merit. Perception). Jessica Elain Blinkhorn, Who Am I Who Are You? ABOUT THE CURATOR: Jessica Elaine Blinkhorn was diagnosed with Spinal Muscular Atrophy very young. https://www.thewayageofdarkness.com/ Interview with Cole Higgins The Way Age of Darkness started as a narrative art book created by artist and director Cole Higgins. The book is set in a primitive world and each image is a window into the daily lives of this time and these people. Through the creation of the book the world of The Way blossomed. Cole set his sights on creating an animated series that will in total be 50 episodes. Each character in the series is sculpted by hand, digitized and then animated using a motion capture suit. All in the comfort of his home in the mountains of Colorado.

Caitlin Mary Margarett is a Midwestern artist, born and raised between Minnesota and Iowa. CMM attends the University of Wisconsin-Madison, seeking an MFA in 4D (2024). She holds a BFA in performance art and a BA in art history from the University of Northern Iowa (2018). Rooted in a durational, performative practice, CMM's work shifts between seeking an esthetic, spiritual ambience and an immediate, frenetic urgency about our climate crisis. Her work is a multimedia exploration of place and the near past; utilizing video, photography, ceramics, antiques, and textiles to evoke both nostalgia and solastalgia. She has most recently been analyzing her local ecology and considering the Midwest landscape as an article of history in and of itself. The 100 Days project is a durational performance practice that began in 2020, illustrating the timeline of the Midwest's loss in biodiversity alongside her maternal family's immigration from Denmark to Iowa. The project is focused on generating a discussion surrounding our concept of time, ecological and cultural erosion, and grief. In 2021, her 100 Days V.ii documented the Iowa Derecho's damage and showed her multi-day pilgrimage across the state. In the final days of V.ii, CMM documented the homes, graves, and churches of her maternal line, and the Rompot prairie that was destroyed by Cargill and the City of Cedar Rapids. Through 100 Days V.i in 2020, CMM cataloged much of her surrounding landscape and domestic rituals at the onset of the pandemic. CMM's art practice is a means to make sense of her own feminist spirituality within systems of cultural / ecological flourishing and suffering. Her work poses questions about individual agency, and the experience of being locked in cycles of redemption and reemergence. These recurring threads, woven into narratives around site specificity and our connection to place, coalesce into new work that asks what our roles are as we brace for the impact of our climate emergency. Her work has been shown throughout the Midwest, at 2021's Miami Art Week as a part of the PERFORMANCE IS ALIVE / Satellite Show that runs concurrent with Art Basel Miami; at Louisiana State University for the 2019 Queeramics Symposium; in Ceramics Monthly; Emergency Index V. 8 and V. 9; and Aesthetica Magazine. She is currently preparing for her research trip to Denmark in 2022 and her solo show in Berlin, Germany, at LiTEHAUS GALERIE & PROJEKTRAUM, also slated for 2022. CMM's next upcoming solo show is scheduled at ARTIFACT Gallery, New York, NY, on January 11-29, 2023. https://www.caitlinmarymargarett.com/
A flesh-centric collaboration between Isla P Gordon and Ashley Kaye, Milk and Honey explores and lampoons pop culture, partnership and the body. Milk and Honey takes its name from the biblical phrase, and inspiration from its use in the modern day to describe, among other things, The United States of America, a 1984 album by John Lennon & Yoko Ono, and an ancient form of corporal punishment. Milk and Honey's oeuvre draws on the creators' experiences as a transgender woman and a gender non-conforming woman. Utilizing an array of props, custom designed and printed textiles and bodysuits, their live performances, videos and installations contemplate new ways of being. Recent recipients of Artist 360 Grants from the Mid-America Art Alliance, their performances and installations have been featured at Theatre Squared, Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art and online by Inverse Performance Art Festival. mindofmilkandhoney.com - satellite-show.com - performanceisalive.com

https://www.hammondartstudio.com/ Hammond, represented by Rehs Contemporary Galleries in Midtown Manhattan, grew up in the historic Hudson Valley of New York. His earliest influences included Jim Davis and Charles Schultz, as well as characters created by DC and Marvel Comics. His interest in art was further fueled by the strong museum and arts background of his parents. In the late 90's, Hammond studied the business and presentation side of the fine art world while working for Vanier Galleries, Scottsdale, AZ. In doing so, he was exposed to world-renowned artists such as Dale Chihuly, Francoise Gillot, Fritz Scholder and Paul Jenkins. He had his first solo exhibition in 2000 and earned his B.A. in Art from Arizona State University in 2006. While trained in representational art, Hammond began working from the subconscious, and in 2011 he shifted to an abstract expressionistic style. The initial outcome was his first abstract series, UNTITLED. In 2012 he moved to Cincinnati, OH. He then partnered with Artworks Cincinnati on multiple projects, and in 2014 he founded the Cincinnati Abstract Art Group. Hammond's work was selected for the Ohio Governor's Office and Residence Loan Program in 2016 and he has received three purchase awards through the Ohio Percent for Art program. He has had solo exhibitions in AZ, NY, OH and WI and is in public and private collections nationally.

ibuki-kuramochi.com Born in Japan, Artist IBUKI KURAMOCHI specializes in artworks for exhibition (paintings and media arts), and also specializes in live performances combining her live painting with her Japanese Butoh dance. From 2012, Ibuki started exhibiting works in major cities in Japan, U.S.A.,Taiwan, France, Italy and Australia. She studied Butoh dance at the world renown Kazuo Ohno Butoh Dance Studio in Yokohama in 2016. Through her work, she pursues the physicality of Butoh’s poetic choreography and the pursuit of the human body in anatomy. She visualizes her performance and body movements as two-dimensional works and video works. Ibuki explores concepts of the body, thought and physical resonance, metamorphosis, Femininity and fetishism. In 2019, Ibuki received a USA O-1 artist visa. She currently resides in Los Angeles. Artist Statement Physicality is the key point of my art’s theme. My work exists in various media such as video works, performances and painting works. The body is owned by every human being, but it is different for each person. As anatomist Takeshi Yoro says, "There is nothing more personal than your own body”. Each body is born to and owned by each individual, and is completely original. Also,I have few experiences of sleeping comfortably at night, and I often have nightmares which I remember well after waking up. Most of the nightmares are like a strange, violent and weird film. I believe that these dream experiences have directly influenced my work, and that the visual experiences that I see every night are inevitably the essence of my work. Also, in my dream experience, the "Id" in Sigmund Freud is exposed. (The Id is the primitive and instinctive component of personality. It consists of all the inherited, ((i.e. biological components of personality present at birth)), including the sex ((life)) instinct – Eros ((which contains the libido)), and the aggressive ((death)) instinct - Thanatos.) When I’m creating a video, I consciously discover my own "Id" and output it. In the case of creating my paintings, I subconsciously discover my own "Id" and output it. That process feels like swimming. These subconscious and conscious extracted "Id" have a consistent physicality. I can say that my video work represents the output of Id’s body sensation, and my painting work represents the output of Id’s brain sensation. I’m also inspired by things that involve sexuality such as masculine and feminine, transformation, meltability, and compatibility. Also, the sorcerous elements and attachments in fetishism are like stretching the desires of the body. Sometimes things become a substitute for the body. Also life and death come and go on the side of that fetishism / eroticism. For example, the mind and the body move between the membranes, or the body escapes from the body and materializes. Under the pandemic, all human relationships are now concentrated in the virtual world through the Internet. People’s thoughts, remarks, and lives appear in our vision which forms into photographs, movies, letters, and become a huge timeline. My work evokes and awakens the oblivion of the physical body in the current virtual world.
Join us for a conversation about NFTS (Non-fungible token) and learn why they are taking over the art world. Let us start with the basics: Non-fungible token (NFT) is a unit of data stored on a digital ledger, called a blockchain, that certifies a digital asset to be unique and therefore not interchangeable.[1] NFTs can be used to represent items such as photos, videos, audio and other types of digital files. Access to any copy of the original file, however, is not restricted to the buyer of the NFT. While copies of these digital items are available for anyone to obtain, NFTs are tracked on blockchains to provide the owner with a proof of ownership that is separate from copyright. In 2021 there has been increased interest in using NFTs. Blockchains like Ethereum, Flow, and Tezos have their own standards when it comes to supporting NFTs, but each works to ensure that the digital item represented is authentically one-of-a-kind. NFTs are now being used to commodify digital assets in art, music, sports, and other popular entertainment. Most NFTs are part of the Ethereum blockchain, however other blockchains can implement their own versions of NFTs. The NFT market value tripled in 2020, reaching more than $250 million.[3] The rise of NFT transactions has also led to increased environmental criticism. The computation-heavy processes associated with proof-of-work blockchains, the type primarily used for NFTs, require high energy inputs that are contributing to global warming. The carbon emissions produced by the energy needed to maintain these blockchains has forced some in the NFT market to rethink their carbon footprint. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Non-fungible_token
Betsy Enzensberger sculpts works that create a visceral longing and remembrance of the most nostalgic delights from childhood. The artist uses the familiarity of those sweet treats to help us remember the simplicity, value and culture of desserts so often associated with positivity and joy. Enzensberger was born and raised in New York. She graduated from Tulane University and is now a Los Angeles-based artist with a studio in Mar Vista. She has shown with galleries domestically in Los Angeles, Miami, Des Moines, Dallas and New York, and internationally in Hong Kong, London, Stockholm, Hamburg and Byron Bay, Australia. You can find her sculptures in multiple public and private art collections. Betsy Enzensberger has become quite well known for her realistic, larger-than-life sculptures of dripping, frozen treats. Resin looks like candy. It appears delicious and sweet. The shiny exterior has a wet, melting quality. Her Tragically Sweet series plays with the desires of everyone’s inner child. The lure of sweet, sticky popsicles artificially instills intense longing. The colorful confections practically beg to be rescued and consumed. “Resin - I love it. It’s beautiful, sexy, mysterious. It’s also toxic, messy, and annoyingly exhausting to create. However, I enjoy the challenges that resin presents. There’s just something about it I can’t resist. If the process was easy, I wouldn’t be doing it.” – Betsy Enzensberger betsyenzensberger.com

Korean American Artist Chuck Hohng was born in Long Beach, California, but spent most of his early life growing up in his family's native home in South Korea. He received his undergraduate degree in Fine Art from the University of Southern California, and received his Master of Fine Arts from acclaimed Art Center College of Design in Pasadena. His work has been exhibited both domestically and internationally including Los Angeles, City of Manhattan Beach, Redondo Beach, San Francisco, Paris, London, Dubai, Osaka, Gwangju, and Busan. Not willing to settle on just one form of media, his art pieces run the gambit from incredibly intricate reductive linoleum prints to giant 10 foot bears composed of drop clothes canvas and balloons, to hauntingly beautiful video imageries. His recent ongoing project Knoxon Dahl, which phonetically means 'Rusted Moon' in Korean, creates objects that reflect his lifestyle aesthetics. From his teddy bears, seeds for the garden, to bespoke Hanbok, traditional Korean attire, Knoxon Dahl spotlights curiosity toward nature, multiculturalism where aspects of different cultures are presented in parallel existence with respect to each element, without hierarchy. Davidmjester.com "I was born in Palm Springs, California a while ago and raised in San Diego. I got my MFA at Rutgers University I always felt that I was meant to make Art, but wasnt until the last 2 years that I dedicated full time to Art. I paint on average 12 hours a day, about 330 days a year, and being in the studio so much is bliss. I have always been drawn to the pool in my art. Metaphorically, its filled with water, and so are we - Body fluids and cleanliness were a jumping of point for this current series. Those who are inside the pool and those who are outside and the different viewpoints and the views are often distorted ones - just like the conservative views of the gay community, and vice versa. I love distortion and so it is a frequent part of my work and I enjoy pushing the abstract shapes that occur in water environments. Pool cleaners hum around working to make the water crystal clear like Prep and meds do within our veins. The pool is another world that is part of the world around it - just like the gay community is an integral part of the overall society. The water in the pool and us has been shared by every other living being since the water developed here - there is a history to it."

With both Persian and Japanese roots, her art derives influences from both cultures. She grew up traveling to Japan to visit her family every summer for twenty years. Meet Artist Kim Winberry https://www.waterplusink.com/ The influence of my work today My art today isn't what it always has been. When I began teaching myself watercolors, I devoured every book I could find. Books on light, shadow, people, texture, as well as what other artists were doing with various techniques and styles. I set out on a path exploring realism as a style. I found that I enjoyed doing animals and flowers, especially flowers. I became very adept with the style but didn't feel like my work had a voice. It was at this time that my life was experiencing some turmoil and I completely lost the ability to focus on those details. My husband was sick and I was losing my house. One day, I needed my art, my anxiety and frustration were through the roof. I threw water on my paper and then dropped pigment into the pool and watched it blossom. As it did this, it also rolled across the paper in a stream, running into other colors along the way. Merging and melting into one another. It ended up being an abstract piece (pictured to the right) Bits and shapes of color then turned into suggestions of images like the turtle in the adjacent column. Eventually, what started out as a place of anger, frustration and anxiety evolved into a happy and whimsical style that sometimes tip toes over into the downright silly.

Join Miss Art World and Klaire Lockheart for this fun feminist episode. Klaire is a feisty artist who uses traditional oil painting techniques to critique historical injustices in the traditional Western art world. She has lived in South Dakota since she earned her MFA from the University of South Dakota, and she is currently the Artist in Residence at the Vermillion Area Arts Council. Lockheart enjoys using the human form as a vehicle to communicate the agency of her subjects with viewers, especially since women artists were historically prohibited from studying live models and making historic paintings. In addition to addressing femininity and feminism within her artwork, Lockheart enjoys incorporating humor to make serious subjects approachable. She also enjoys celebrating the accomplishments of women, and she is the South Dakota artist for the national Her Flag collaborative artwork. Her recent solo exhibitions include Feminine Attempts at the Sioux City Art Center in Sioux City, IA; A is for Apron at the Ritz Gallery in Brookings, SD; and Ladylike Representations at Gallery 120 in Inver Grove Heights, MN. https://www.klairelockheart.com

I do this by layering and adding other elements such as clear acrylic rods and reflective backgrounds. While the viewer cannot know the simple and sometimes complex stories behind each piece, they can reconsider their perceptions of neon and the world around them. When I look at a neon tube, I don’t see a sign even if it is. I see a luminous glow. I want to share the beauty and playfulness of neon.” Linda Sue Price
