Much like the wheel, the boat, and the telephone, the axe is a transformative piece of technology―one that has been with us since prehistory. And just as early humans used the axe to chop down trees, hunt for food, and whittle tools, they also used it to murder. Over time, this particular use has endured: as the axe evolved over centuries to fit the needs of new agricultural, architectural, and social development, so have our lethal uses for it. Rachel McCarthy James, who wrote "The Man From the Train" with her father Bill James, returns to the show to talk to share some of the history of this iconic tool and weapon. She shares examples of how it's been used for violence over the centuries - from the Vikings to Henry VIII to Lizzie Borden. Her new book, out on May 13, called "Whack Job: A History of Axe Murder". HOUR ONE: 7-year-old Maria went missing in 1957, and while her body was later found, her murder was never solved and the case went cold – until 50 years later when the case was finally solved and closed. But it turns out everybody was wrong. (A Cold Case Finally Solved… Then Unsolved) *** If you take State Route 375 through Nevada you will pass by the infamous Area-51. But of course they are not going to let you in, even if you ask nicely. But State Route 375 isn't called the Extraterrestrial Highway just because of one area you can't visit – there's a lot more to it than that. (The 98-Mile Extraterrestrial Highway) *** Hikers sometimes get lost in the woods, as do children of course. But those on bikes almost never disappear; but there is one tragic case of a fat tire rider who couldn't be found. (The Vanished Mountain Biker) *** In 1910 two witnesses see a pair of lights that transform into radiant beings with “human form.” You might dismiss the report as misidentification of ball lightning or some other natural explanation – but in 1952 those radiant humanoid beings of light were seen again! (Close Encounters of the Fairy Kind)==========HOUR TWO: "It was a terrible sight… I have seen horrible sights, but never anything like this.” Those were the words of the local undertaker after seeing the results of a triple murder laying before him in 1932 Pennsylvania. (The Axe Murders of Lykens) *** A gypsy once told Leonarda that all of her children would die before her.  A different fortuneteller  told her that she faced either a future in prison or in a criminal asylum. And the reason she gave for becoming a serial killer is something you'd hear out of a bad direct-to-video horror film. And that's a tiny sample of this woman's insanely dark life – which began even before her birth. (The Woman Who Made Soap) *** Ireland's Loftus Hall is considered by many to be the most haunted location on all the Emerald Isle. But the most infamous story of Loftus Hall begins not with terror, but with romance… with a beautiful young girl falling madly in love with… the devil. (The Girl Who Fell In Love With The Devil) ==========SUDDEN DEATH OVERTIME: More of the story of Ireland's Loftus Hall and the young girl who fell in love with the devil! (The Girl Who Fell In Love With The Devil) *** Chlorosis was a frequently diagnosed disease during the 19th century that gave the skin of the afflicted a greenish tinge. As a cure, doctors told young women to get married and reproduce. As you can probably surmise, the cure was not in the least bit effective. (The Girls Who Turned Green) *** Have you heard of the poor girl who was bullied and pushed down into a sewer by those whom she thought were her friends? I'll tell you the story. And while this episode is not a creepypasta episode, so all the stories are supposed to be non-fiction, that is… true, I will be sharing this urban legend anyway – because when it comes to urban legends, sometimes it's best to err on the side of caution and simply assume they are true. (The Urban Legend of Carmen Winstead) *** Weirdo Family member Brad Hicks describes the experience as “cool… and creepy as hell”. We'll tell you his story. (The Thing In The Light) *** More of the story of Ireland's Loftus Hall and the young girl who fell in love with the devil! On a bitter cold day in January of 1947, a retired carpenter from Schuylkill County went berserk and slaughtered his wife with a hatchet. What makes the tragic tale of Samuel Aulenbach strange is that, according to some, Samuel was a member of a fanatical religious sect. The motive is the greatest mystery-- what drove a quiet, respectable man to a senseless act of slaughter? Only the killer knew for sure, and he didn't live long enough to tell anyone about it. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/paoddities/support

This episode has so many twists and turns that if it was a novel, someone on Goodreads would complain about it being "unrealistic". A whole family was murdered one night in the 1870s. The motive was clear, but the perpetrator was (and still is) a mystery. Though a trial ensues, the town decides to take matters into their own hands. Otherwise known as The Horsey Episode. Sources: 1) https://johnbrassardjr.com/2020/01/11/the-spencer-family-massacre-part-1/ 2) https://johnbrassardjr.com/2020/01/25/the-spencer-family-massacre-part-2/3) https://khqa.com/news/local/family-of-five-brutally-murdered-in-clark-county-in-18774) https://www.mississippivalleypublishing.com/group-takes-another-look-at-125-year-old-murder-case/article_b57f4759-a9c7-5ef7-89f9-0be4783df114.htmlSupport the show

Episode 150 | "They didn't have birth control back in the 1900's. You do it, you have a baby." This week, we're celebrating a major milestone—150 episodes of REMelations! To mark the occasion and embrace the October spirit, we dive into a mix of dream interpretations, quirky catnaps, and a chilling cold case. Brooke kicks off the episode by interpreting Jake's unsettling dream of a rundown house and a spouse who ignores him. She unpacks the symbolism and emotional undertones, revealing what these dream elements might represent in Jake's waking life. In the catnap segment, we share a series of wild and bizarre dreams: finding a great deal on Prada boots, recurring dreams of feeding stray cats, binge-eating alligators, a strange visit to a superhero hospital, and a dream about a tasty and intelligent head soup. To celebrate both our 150th episode and spooky season, Mindy explores Iowa's most infamous cold case, the 1912 Villisca Axe Murders. In this deep dive, we examine the brutal, unsolved mystery that has haunted Iowa for over a century. Finally, we wrap up the episode by reflecting on our experience at the Iowa Podcast Awards, where we were thrilled to win Best Comedy Podcast. First Dale Ross, author of "A Voice for Ira" joins me to talk about the horrific death of Ira Gurley in a bizarre elevator accident in 1932 Arkansas. While it looked to be an tragic accident on the surface, some evidence suggests there may have been something more sinister afoot involving corrupt state government officials and gangsters. My second guest is Jeremy W. Gray, author of "The Infamous Birmingham Axe Murders: Prohibition, Gangsters & Vigilante Justice". From about 1910 to 1912, an alarming number of axe murders were occurring across the American South and Southwest. Though many would speculate as to the identity of perpetrator, including the theory that a single individual was responsible, many of these murders would remain unsolved and contribute to macabre urban legends that endure to this day. In New Orleans, however, the brutal axe murders of at least five Black families in 1911 and 1912 are attributed to Clementine Barnabet, an African American teenager who confessed to the crimes.Despite having confessed to as many as thirty-five murders, and having been convicted and incarcerated for one, the veracity of Barnabet's claim has long been in doubt. Tried and convicted on very little evidence, Barnabet's story changed many times following her arrest and eventually came to include sensational and highly questionable claims of her belonging to a Voodoo religious sect that engaged in human sacrifice. Not only were these claims unsupported by any real evidence, but they also suggested the girl may have been suffering from profound mental illness and had nothing whatsoever to do with the murders in and around New Orleans. But if Clementine Barnabet wasn't the killer, why did she confess to such brutal, wicked crimes?Thank you to the incredible Dave White or Bring Me the Axe Podcast for research!ReferencesCrowley Daily Signal. 1911. Weird Darkness: Stories of the Paranormal, Supernatural, Legends, Lore, Mysterious, Macabre, Unsolved

HOUR ONE: "It was a terrible sight… I have seen horrible sights, but never anything like this.” Those were the words of the local undertaker after seeing the results of a triple murder laying before him in 1932 Pennsylvania. (The Girl Who Fell In Love With The Devil) ==========HOUR TWO: 7-year-old Maria went missing in 1957, and while her body was later found, her murder was never solved and the case went cold – until 50 years later when the case was finally solved and closed. (Close Encounters of the Fairy Kind)==========SUDDEN DEATH OVERTIME: More of the story of Ireland's Loftus Hall and the young girl who fell in love with the devil! What made the case even more chilling was that it appeared to have been predicted by the killer's fortune-telling celebrity wife.Support Forgotten Australia:Apple - http://apple.co/forgottenaustraliaPatreon - https://www.patreon.com/ForgottenAustraliaTo send me a question for the David Hunt Book Club episode:forgottenaustraliapodcast@gmail.comor https://www.speakpipe.com/forgottenaustraliaCheck out my books:The Murder Squadhttps://www.booktopia.com.au/the-murder-squad-michael-adams/book/9781922863836.htmlHanging Ned Kellyhttps://www.booktopia.com.au/hanging-ned-kelly-michael-adams/book/9781922992185.htmlAustralia's Sweethearthttps://www.booktopia.com.au/australia-s-sweetheart-michael-adams/book/9780733640292.html Hosted on Acast. Happy Spooky Wednesday, dear listeners! We are in the second week of True Crime January 2024, and we are covering "the most diabolical crime ever committed in Savannah," the Savannah Axe Murders, sometimes known as the Gribble House murders. This triple homicide caused widespread panic in the city, and it quickly became national news. After a LARGE string of (bullsh*t) arrests in Savannah, they finally caught the killer. We wish that was the end of the story, but sadly, this is a messy, terrible chapter in U.S. history. The story goes so much deeper than that. It is no wonder spirits have stuck around the property when there are so many pieces that remain unresolved. Content warning: Racism, murder, and descriptions of death

PLEASE SHARE THIS LINK in your social media so others who loves strange and macabre stories can listen too:https://weirddarkness.com/weekend-of-november-25-26-2023/==========HOUR ONE: 7-year-old Maria went missing in 1957, and while her body was later found, her murder was never solved and the case went cold – until 50 years later when the case was finally solved and closed. (The Girl Who Fell In Love With The Devil)==========SUDDEN DEATH OVERTIME: More of the story of Ireland's Loftus Hall and the young girl who fell in love with the devil! A man was on a simple afternoon stroll on December 9, 1909 in his Savannah, Georgia neighborhood when he heard moaning coming from 401 W. Perry Street. What he found inside the small wooden house would horrify the city. One woman lay dying and two more were already dead. An axe had been used and the murders were brutal. As to who committed the crime, that remains a mystery, although the husband of one of the women was convicted and served some time in prison before being pardoned. Perhaps that is why the location where the murders happened has stories of hauntings. On a hot Friday the 13th in June of 1980, Allan Gore was worried. He couldn't get a hold of his wife, Betty. For hours, he'd called her over and over. No answer. Betty always answered. She didn't get out by herself, especially not with their two small daughters. She hated when he traveled--scared of being alone, so Allan was trying to check in to reassure her. Now he was starting to panic. He finally got his neighbors to get into his house. When he called back, he could never have been prepared for the staggering horror of what happened to his wife. Sources: https://www.southernfriedtruecrime.com/candy-and-betty This story has been requested numerous times literally since I started the show. I understand the fascination now. A real suburban axe murder. It sounds like fiction. So thank you most recently to Melody and Denise but also to everyone who has emailed me over the years. Y'all were right.
