Bibliografia: G. Another game and another farcical VAR decision that has cost West Ham points. It wasn't the alleged foul throw that caused anger after the 1-1 draw against Southampton over the weekend, it was referee Peter Bankes clearly obstructing Jarrod Bowen's attempts to defend in the build-up to Southampton's first-half opener. It was clear obstruction, yet the goal stood. That said, should we be looking at the draw as a good point or two points dropped after having 25 attempts at goal, 14 corners and over 60% possession? James and Will discuss all of that and more on this week's show, as well as look back at the win over Anderlecht, before looking ahead to the trip to Liverpool on Wednesday night and Monday night's visit of Bournemouth. Joining us this week on the Opposition View is Liverpool fan Henry Jackson from This Is Anfield and sports journalist Graham Nickless, who covers Bournemouth.
Discussing: T is for Tarlton - Early Modern Celebrity with Sophie Shorland. This episode is a discussion with Sophie Shorland about Early Modern Celebrity - specifically looking at Sir Philip Sidney, Moll Cutpurse and - mostly - Richard Tarlton. We look at stories of his life, the myths and half truths, and are introduced to his animal avatar. With recordings of our workshops on Tarlton's Jests - with Leigh MacDonald, Mark Scanlon and Hugh Weller-Poley. We spend much time going over the story of Bankes his horse - of which there is much more to be said in the future. Sophie is an Early Career Fellow at the Institute of Advanced Study, University of Warwick. She is currently working on celebrity culture in the late Elizabethan and Jacobean periods, exploring what celebrity looked like before the newspaper. She has published in Renaissance Studies, Early Modern Literary Studies, and is currently editing a special issue of the journal Exchanges on metaphorical and literal cannibalisms. Her other research interests include the performance of premodern power, domestic tragedy, and early modern women’s writing. If you'd like to have a look at Tarlton's Jests, there is an incomplete edition here - we're hunting for more. https://archive.org/details/tarltonsjestsan00chetgoog/page/n6 NB: Be warned there is some discussion of cock fighting and bear baiting towards the end of the episode. At Kingston Lacy in Dorset, Bettany meets House Steward Bernie King to learn about William John Bankes who, during the 19th Century, turned Kingston Lacy into the treasure trove you’ll find today. This extraordinary house is a testament to Bankes’ obsession for exploring and collecting in Europe and beyond. Bettany examines his fabulous European art collection with paintings expert Christine Sitwell and is given exclusive access to William John’s sitting room to learn more about what made him tick. The tragedy of Bankes’ life is that he never saw out his days at Kingston Lacy after he was forced into exile in Italy for being gay, at a time when homosexuality was illegal. Although Bettany learns it is very likely he visited the house incognito to comment on the door hinges!
