You don't always get to choose your relations in life: it is neither your choice what family you're born into, nor who you work with. This gamble doesn't always work out, and is sometimes made especially more tragic because we spend the majority of our days working, and we must grow up with our family - regardless of who they are. That's why it is important to choose carefully the relationships where choice is an option. You might think I'm talking about “friends” here. But, more specifically, what I mean are those little friends that come from a different species - our pets. Just as with human relations, we have to work and put a serious effort into developing the relationships we have with our pets. So make sure you are sincere with this effort. Otherwise, you risk only being Fair Weather Friends. This story was written by Phillip Clark. It was directed, engineered, and edited by Phillip Clark. When you go through a tough time, you will have people tell you that “it could be worse.” Frequently, the consolation of “worse things have happened to better people” is offered - as if to diminish the gravity of our suffering. But to imply that something could be “worse” is to state that it could be “different.” In tonight's story, we find out what truly lies behind the facade of a set of circumstances that appear to be “different” than the circumstances that have come before. So pay close attention, and be prepared to take notes, lest you have to go through all of this Again. This story was written by Phillip Clark. We've seen it time and again, nearly daily: a solution that has no problem. No, I didn't mispeak. The world is full of solutions to things that aren't even problems to begin with. But when you've only ever known problems, how could you help but think only of solutions? That is the exact situation our character finds himself in in tonight's story. He is confronted with a number of small, yet unsolvable, problems for which he seems to find one extraordinary and inexplicable solution. Of course, we know there is a name for this: we know the Latin term is Deus Ex Machina. This story was written by Phillip Clark. It was directed, engineered, and edited by Phillip Clark. In this story book of ours, we are introduced to the plot and play in the chapters of the past, though we dwell in the chapter at present. All this serves to build the anticipation of what is to come. In tonight's story, we once again hear from our friend Captain Chris as he navigates the perilous skies and circumstances in which he finds himself. This week, we're joined by Nicole Clark, founder and CEO of Trellis, a state trial court research and analytics platform. For several years, Nicole was an attorney in private practice, handling business litigation and labor and employment matters. The idea for Trellis came from her experience doing research for complicated summary judgement motions. Nicole worked with software developers on an early version of the tool, collecting state trial court data and creating an extensive database of tentative rulings issued by judges in Southern California. As Nicole's practice flourished from using the database, she decided to turn it into a scalable legal analytics platform that would help democratize access for state trial court data. Outside of her work at Trellis, Nicole shares everything she has learned over the years about legal analytics with other legal professionals by authoring articles for ABA Journal, New York Law Journal, Texas Lawyer, and Santa Barbara Lawyer. She is also regularly featured as a legal expert in Southern California Record, and has appeared as a guest on podcasts produced by Above the Law and Corporate Counsel Business Journal. In our discussion, Nicole spoke about her transition from practicing law to developing Trellis, her experience starting college at 16, how lawyer engagement with tech has changed in recent years, and her advice for those considering making a leap to business.
In this episode, M.C. Sungaila interviews an esteemed panel of female legal tech founders: Nicole Clark of Trellis Research, Inc., Dorna Moini of Documate, and Jacqueline Schafer of Clearbrief. This standout trio is working on ways to use emerging tech to accelerate court processes, and impact access to justice. Tune in for practical tips and insights from the ones paving the way in the tech industry, where female founders still face significant barriers. Note: Trellis and ClearBrief are founding sponsors of this podcast.

The Geek in Review podcast hosts Marlene Gebauer and Greg Lambert interviewed Nicole Clark, CEO of Trellis, about their new Law Firm Intelligence tool (LFI). This tool allows law firms to analyze aggregated and normalized state trial court data to gain competitive intelligence across cases, practice areas, and performance. Collecting this unstructured data from county courts is very challenging, but provides valuable business insights. The Law Firm Intelligence tool enables firms to identify growth opportunities, benchmark themselves, and drill down into the data to find strategic insights. Firms can slice and dice the data by region, practice area, time period, and other parameters to get to the most relevant information. LFI also gives litigators specific insights into judges, opposing counsel tactics, and case outcomes. Trellis uses both technology and human QA processes to ensure the accuracy of the raw trial court data. The data comes directly from the courts, without any alterations by Trellis. This allows Trellis to spot trends like hotspots for certain case types, which can inform law firm strategy and policy implications. As a newer legal tech company, Trellis initially had to overcome skepticism and get large firms to try their product. But steady growth has now built their credibility. Nicole Clark discussed the challenges of selling into the legal industry as a startup. Trellis has exciting new AI capabilities in development that will leverage the trove of state court data they have aggregated. While widespread adoption of AI in legal is coming, though the timeline is uncertain. Clark predicts more law firm consolidation and AI startups, but cautions against overestimating what legal tasks AI can solve. Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for May 18, 2023 is: zephyr ZEFF-er noun A zephyr is a breeze blowing from the west. More loosely, a zephyr can be any gentle breeze. // We were relieved when a zephyr blew in just as the heat of the day was peaking, allowing us to remain comfortably on the beach for a little while longer. See the entry > Examples: “As I played [the video game Okami], I'd pause to manually draw a slash, loop, or other shape using a calligraphy-style brush, creating a tornado or a fire. … An ‘O' around a tree's naked branches made it burst with cherry blossoms, a vision of abundance. A curlicue in the air created a zephyr that gently riffled through the sky. The world was my sketchbook, and I wanted to beautify the game's gorgeous woodblock and sumi-e ink art style.” — Nicole Clark, Polygon.com, 8 Feb. 2023 Did you know? To build on a classic lyric by Bob Dylan, you don't need a weatherman to know which way the wind blows—especially if you know that wind is a zephyr. You see, poets have eulogized Zephyrus, the Greek god of the west wind—and his “swete breeth” (in the words of Geoffrey Chaucer)—for centuries. Zephyrus, the personified west wind, eventually evolved into zephyr, a word for a breeze that is westerly or gentle, or both. Breezy zephyr blew into English with the help of such delightfully windy wordsmiths as William Shakespeare, who used the word in his play Cymbeline: “Thou divine Nature, thou thyself thou blazon'st / In these two princely boys! They are as gentle / As zephyrs blowing below the violet.”
Nicole Clark, lawyer, entrepreneur, and CEO of Trellis, discusses how the award-winning technology start-up she founded is democratizing access to the law by making state trial court records more accessible and bringing transparency to the judicial system. Nicole describes her vision, reveals the challenges for women entrepreneurs to obtain venture capital, and predicts how legal technology will transform the legal profession.
One in eight couples is currently struggling with infertility or loss. A staggering 19% of couples have been trying to start their family for at least a year. The statistics are there, the heartache is real, the pain palpable. The opportunity for the church to step up and minister to this group is glaring! I'm chatting with Nicole Clark about how God used her story of infertility and loss to be a connecting point for other women suffering silently who didn't have a tribe to support, encourage, and just offer the power of presence. We all have a job to do. For some people, this is a mantra that they repeat to themselves for their professional life. For others, it is much more personal. But the simple facts remain that work needs to be done, and we all must share in the responsibility. Of course, this means forging relationships to help us accomplish what we need to. But who do we side with? Often, you just have to take a shot, and hope that you have a good ally. In tonight's short tale, we find out why one person states I Side With The Witness. It has been said that “the road to Hell is paved with good intentions.” But who determines the quality of anyone's intentions? Is it purely for us to figure out for ourselves, or do the manifestations of intentions define whether they were good or bad? In tonight's story, which is related to an earlier story of ours titled “Gather The Pieces,” Dr. Casey Edwards gets a chance to explain his intentions. So let's be open minded while we listen to him explain why I Won't Go Back To The Other Side. This story was written by Phillip Clark. It was directed, engineered, and edited by Phillip Clark. Fear is one of the most basic of human instincts. However, it doesn't do anyone any good to just be afraid. Fear is a driver - something that is supposed to push you into action. Of course, it helps to know the difference between a legitimate fear and an irrational one. That being said, our story tonight can't discuss every fear, but it can give you a simple warning about one: “Fear Not The Shadow, But That Which Cast It Not.” This story was written by Phillip Clark. We have been talking all season long about how God is Bigger than Our Excuses. A couple of weeks ago, I traveled to see a friend in the Conroe area. I plugged my coordinates into my GPS on my phone and set out. As I was driving, the road got complicated. Several splits were ahead, and I couldn't figure out which one the GPS wanted me to take. I decided and thought I aced that challenge until I heard the GPS say exit and make a U-turn. Ug… I went down the wrong path. I was so frustrated with myself because this was going to cause me to be late for the event with my friend. Have you ever done that? My guest Nicole Clark and I talked about a time she realized she was on a path she didn't want to be on and how fear of making that u-turn impacted her life. A creative at heart, Nicole has spent the last 20 years as a dancer, choreographer, dance instructor, and studio manager, learning the importance of hard work and perseverance. After returning home from world tours as a backup dancer, the Lord began to slowly soften her heart for Him and opened the door into ministry. Nicole now uses her unique and well-rounded experiences to serve others in a meaningful way. She is passionate about creating and encouraging women (and a few men) to find hope and fulfill their purpose. Nicole founded a local nonprofit women's ministry called Twelve 12 Ministries. Inspired by Romans 12:12, the organization helps women and families through tough seasons of infertility and loss. She also holds space for her friends, co-workers, associates, ministry partners, and influencers to shine bright on her podcast, Purpose Beyond Motherhood. Suffering a plane crash is one thing. Being lost in the wilderness is another. But when one thing leads to the next, coupled with thirst, malnutrition, and a lack of cover, things can start to seem hopeless. What drives you at this point? Is it the will to live? Perhaps it's being singularly focused – determined to accomplish a mission of the utmost importance. Or maybe it is a faith in the divine. Whatever the cause, and whatever the driving force, it is hard to deny the difficulties that lie ahead. Simply put, it is no stroll in the park or day at the beach. It just may be A Walk In The Rain. For many people, the world of our dreams is a welcome escape from the horrors of reality. This means that a condition like insomnia can be a barrier from ending up where we are happy and relaxed. But consider the idea of a condition that is the opposite of insomnia. Consider what happens when your dreams are indistinguishable from reality. Consider what this might mean. What is it to be content? How do you frame success? Well, some people use the company they keep as their measuring rod for such things. Of course, this requires genuine companionship. It requires honesty. And it means not holding back when it comes to important issues. So take charge - be the master of your own destiny! But also remember your companions, and consider this: you're in it together. You might have to rise to the occasion - you might have to be their Surrogate. When it comes to dockets, the holy grail for most of us has always been state trial court dockets. Nicole Clark, CEO and co-founder of Trellis also felt that way when she was practicing, and decided that she would find a way to access and obtain that treasure trove of data that was always just out of reach. Nicole sits down with us this week to tell us the story behind her mission to seek out local court information, clean up the data, and create a method of analyzing that data. As anyone who has ever worked with trial court dockets, you understand how difficult a task this really is. Nicole says that Trellis is on a mission to add a county court a day and to find additional ways that the information can be sliced, diced, and analyzed with the help of artificial intelligence (AI) processes like natural language processing (NLP) and through upcoming API access. She also walks us through some of the unique ways her customers use the data, and that the value of trial court data isn't just limited to the legal field. The once elusive state court data is now becoming more and more available through platforms like Trellis, so the opportunities for legal researchers to take advantage of this wealth of information is expanding, literally by the day. Listener Perk: Trellis is providing Geek In Review podcast listeners with complimentary 14-day access to its state trial court research & analytics platform! Today's guest is Nicole Clark, CEO and Co-Founder at Trellis Research in Los Angeles. Founded in 2017, Trellis is a state trial court legal research and analytics platform with AI-based insights on judges, opposing counsel, motions, dockets and legal issues. They make state trial court data searchable and analyze it to give law firms insights into the way judges are ruling. Legal teams are able to "Google" search state trial court records and uncover key intelligence on opposing counsel, motions, rulings, dockets and other legal issues. Prior to founding Trellis, Nicole was a business litigation and labor and employment attorney who handled litigation in both state and federal courts. She regularly represented multinational corporations in claims ranging from high-profile trade secret disputes to complex class-action litigation. Frustrated by sending internal emails and collecting anecdotes on judges in order to make strategic case recommendations, she built Trellis to solve her own need for access to data, information and analytics at the state trial court level. In the episode, Nicole tells us about: The origins of Trellis Research, Early challenges of bringing the concept to life, Benefits that the platform currently brings to users, Interesting projects & day-to-day life of the engineering team, What the future looks like for Trellis Research and Why Trellis Research is a great place to work
