In today's episode I talk to a woman who walked into her pregnancy imagining that:* it would be relatively easy* miscarriage wasn't a part of the equation and * that her doctor would tell her everything she needed to know. It's a very relatable story, given that this is the way a lot of us walk into this experience. It's certainly the way I initially walked into pregnancy. She'd wanted an unmedicated birth, but her scheduled induction turned into a C section in a way that really scared her and her husband. It also taught her how to adopt a different approach for the second child. We talk about her experience as a black woman in a maternity setting, and I also talk with a fantastic professor of black maternal health who shares the work she's doing in improving this setting from within a medical school.ACOG preparation for an unmedicated birth:https://www.acog.org/womens-health/experts-and-stories/the-latest/thinking-about-childbirth-without-pain-medication-heres-how-you-can-prepareDr. Amutah-Onukagha at Tufts School of Medicine: https://medicine.tufts.edu/people/faculty/ndidiamaka-amutah-onukagha

According to a recent government-funded food pyramid study from Tufts School of Nutrition, Lucky Charms are healthier to eat than steak. So how did such an obviously ridiculous claim pass multiple levels of review at a widely respected research institution? Calley Means joins us to expose the decades-long influence that processed food and pharmaceutical companies have held over America's research institutions, how it's led to skyrocketing rates of obesity and other chronic health conditions, and simple reforms to programs like SNAP that could make America healthy again. Calley Means is a food-as-medicine advocate and the co-founder of TrueMed. He was previously a consultant for food and pharma companies and is now exposing practices they use to weaponize our institutions of trust. Follow Calley on Twitter at @calleymeans.
#110: In Part 2 of our interview with organic expert and PhD candidate Charlotte Vallaeys, she sits down with our co-director Dave Chapman to talk through her main takeaways since she began researching the rise of the term "regenerative" in agriculture and how it relates to the organic movement. Charlotte Vallaeys is an organic expert and PhD candidate at the Tufts School of Agriculture, Food, and Environment. Her focus is on the rise of regenerative agriculture and how it compares to the organic movement, especially socially. According to the Baird et al paper, published in the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology, by age 50, 80% of black women and 70% of white women will have uterine fibroids. It's a substantial impact.” - Dr. Juan Camilo Arjona Ferreira “The normalization of women's heavy periods and pain have left many people without the tools to understand when their periods are abnormal. Have medical textbooks been mistaken when addressing the proliferation of cancer cells? Studies out of Tuft School of Medicine may present a new way of thinking about carcinogens. Tune in to learn: Why cells proliferate and if this function can be regulated What allows cells to become cancerous Why a reductionist view does not solve the problem of cancer Integrative physiologist and pathobiologist at Tufts School of Medicine, Carlos Sonnenschein, M.D., breaks down his recent insights about how cancer should be perceived and treated. The established view of cancer as a cellular issue may be on its way out. Dr. Sonnenschein discusses the common error in thinking cell proliferation is inducible and how this relates to cancer cells. This leads to the conclusion that cancer is a tissue-based problem rather than being cellular-based, as is commonly taught. Carcinogens affect cells and cause disorders to begin occurring. This leads to mutations of the tissue and will cause chaos in its development. Dr. Sonnenschein is on a mission to change the way people think about carcinogens and how we can make a difference in battling cancer development moving forward. For more information, the Tufts School of Medicine research studies are available online, and Dr. Sonnenschein can be reached at his email address: carlos.sonnenschein@tufts.edu. For many educators online teaching is a relatively new experience that presents opportunities for rethinking traditional instruction and beliefs about student learning. Dr. Rogers talks to us about the importance of setting clear learning goals, using appropriate assessment metrics, and developing ways of thinking about the role of technology to support meaningful learning.References mentioned in this episode:Rogers, C. (2020). A Time to Experiment. ASEE Prism, 29(4), 21-21Bio:Chris Rogers earned his B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. in mechanical engineering at Stanford University, where he worked with Professor John Eaton on his thesis on particle motion in a boundary layer flow. Rogers joined the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Tufts School of Engineering in 1989. He is involved in a number of research areas, including particle-laden flows (a continuation of his thesis), telerobotics and controls, slurry flows in chemical-mechanical planarization, the engineering of musical instruments, measuring flame shapes of couch fires, measuring fruit-fly locomotion, and engineering education (kindergarten to college). At Tufts, Rogers has exercised his strong commitment to teaching by exploring a number of new directions, including teaching robotics with LEGO bricks and teaching manufacturing by building musical instruments. His teaching work extends to the elementary school level, where he talks with over 1,000 teachers around the world every year on methods of introducing young children to engineering.
Welcome to the radio magazine that brings you news, commentary and analysis from a Black Left perspective. I'm Margaret Kimberley, along with my co-host Glen Ford. Coming up: New and updated terms have entered the vocabulary of Black liberation. We'll speak with an academic and activist about critical race theory, racial realism and Afro-pessimism. And, we'll take a look at the history and current struggles of quilombos, the autonomous Black and indigenous settlements of Brazil. But first -- A globally important webinar on U.S. militarization of Africa, through its military command, AFRICOM, will be held on December 4. One of the panelists is Marie Claire Far-EYE, a Congolese member of the Women's International League for Peace and Freedom. Far-Eye currently lives in Great Britain, a country where, like the United States, most people are not even aware that the greatest genocide since World War Two is still unfolding in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Shameka Powell is co-director Educational Studies at Tufts School of Arts, and co-author of an essay titled, "Kissing Cousins: Critical Race Theory's Racial Realism and Afropessimism's Social Death.” These are subjects that are hotly debated in Black academic circles, and among some activists, but not the stuff of daily Black conversation. We talked with Prof. Powell about the relevance of Racial Realism and Afropessimism. Brazil is home to the biggest Black population in the world outside of Nigeria, yet Blacks wield very little institutional power. Carla Maria Guerrón Montero is a Professor of Anthropology at the University of Delaware. She's done extensive studies of Black populations in Latin America. Most recently, Professor Montero immersed herself in the Quilombos of Brazil, autonomous settlements established to escape slavery and ongoing oppression of Black and indigenous people.

First CBT Psychosis Trial in the Absence of Medication Antipsychotic medication has long been seen as the first line of treatment for psychosis. In fact, prescriptions are increasing in the UK and around the world. But there's criticism that the effectiveness of these drugs has been over-estimated, and the serious side effects, underestimated. Now, in the first trial of its kind in the world, treating psychosis when people aren't taking antipsychotics using a talking therapy, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, or CBT, is being measured in a randomised controlled trial. It is the first time since the 1970s that a psychological treatment, in the absence of medication, has been put to the test, and the results of this experiment have the potential to transform the treatment options for the many people who have diagnoses of schizophrenia and related disorders. The trial's being run jointly by Manchester University and Greater Manchester West Mental Health Foundation Trust, and Tony Morrison, Professor of Clinical Psychology at the University of Manchester, is leading the research along with colleagues in the North East of England. He tells Claudia Hammond that patients should be given more choice about the treatments they're offered instead of medication being the default option. Trial participants, Natalie and Steve, describe their experience of psychosis and the treatments that have helped them and the Editor of the British Journal of Psychiatry, Peter Tyrer, puts the trial into context. US Elections and Mental Health Sixteen per cent of the American population don't have health care insurance and people with mental health problems are over-represented in this group. Daniel Carlat is Professor of Psychiatry at Tufts School of Medicine and he describes to Claudia how insurance companies are reluctant to fund mental health care. Producer: Fiona Hill.
