How did a world memory champion, a theatre director, a voice coach, a TV actor, and a professional magician all help one person win the World's Best Sommelier Competition? How do top performers use nerves and adrenaline to their advantage? What do high achievers do when they accomplish the dreams they've been chasing for years? In this episode of the Unreserved Wine Talk podcast, I'm chatting with Nina and Romané Basset, who have just published a commemorative edition of the book Tasting Victory: The Life and Wine of the World's Favourite Sommelier by Gerard Basset. You can find the wines we discussed at https://www.nataliemaclean.com/winepicks.   Giveaway Two of you are going to win a copy of Nina and Romané Basset's commemorative edition of Tasting Victory: The Life and Wines of the World's Favorite Sommelier by Gerard Basset.  To qualify, all you have to do is email me at natalie@nataliemaclean.com and let me know that you've posted a review of the podcast. I'll choose two people randomly from those who contact me. Good luck!   Highlights Why are narrative associations and humor often more powerful than rote memorization? What did a brutally honest voice coach help Gérard change about the way he communicated? Why did Gérard's near-perfect performance in Athens unravel? What was the hardest part of the Master of Wine journey for Gérard? How did studying The Economist help Gérard learn to think and argue in the style the Master of Wine exam demanded? What happened when Gérard achieved the last great title that had driven him for years? How did Gérard evolve when old methods were no longer enough? Why did writing his memoir become so important to Gérard? Why was a commemorative edition of Tasting Victory necessary?   About Nina and Romané Basset Nina and Romané Basset are Co-Founding Trustees of the Gérard Basset Foundation, the Charity set up to fund education, mentorship and training in the wine, spirits and hospitality industries to honour the legacy of Gérard Basset.       To learn more, visit https://www.nataliemaclean.com/386.

Enrico is back! Our "Fairy Godfather", Enrico has been one of the earliest supporters of this podcast and our original format of our not-for-profit (since 2011). He was also our guest on our maiden voyage, in episode 2 - back in May 2020. We get started where we left off in Episode 2, exploring a ton of what-ifs and why-nots.   Enrico is a veteran actor – starring in Hollywood films, in Broadway theatre productions and in internationally syndicated, culture-making TV series. And in this chat we sit with Enrico as we know him: a guy from the neighbourhood, always in movement and always in search of bigger answers.   We discuss the important hold of belief systems on our actions and the untraining . We learn about an out of body experience on stage, realignment with the what is, embracing the original moment and the danger of tribalism without the actual purity of the tribe. We hear ultimately about his thoughts on his last words on earth --- and about a series of recent books that vaulted him into a different kind of question-making, including the questioning of his own beliefs and has had him crave more about the idea of mission and home.   Untraining.   Fault (Chicago Shakespeare Theatre), Enrico's upcoming theatre production Fault – April & May 2026, directed by Jason Alexander: https://www.chicagoshakes.com/productions/fault/ https://www.broadwayworld.com/chicago/article/Enrico-Colantoni-and-Teri-Hatcher-to-Star-in-FAULT-at-Chicago-Shakespeare-Theater-20260225   Enrico,   IMDB: https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0170186/ IG: @enricocolantoni_really The English teacher: https://tv.apple.com/ca/show/english-teacher/umc.cmc.459knzftbzgdjj4s5gyoxfsmj Working Class roots: https://www.cbc.ca/arts/q/enrico-colantoni-credits-his-working-class-mentality-for-his-success-on-the-screen-1.7467852 To give to the Behind Greatness podcast, please visit here: https://behindgreatness.org. Best known for co-creating and starring in the HBO series Insecure, Issa has attracted a significant amount of Hollywood spotlight largely by showcasing her own personal experiences and emotions on screen for all to see. Literally starting from scratch in 2011 as the singular brainchild of a homegrown, Kickstarter-funded YouTube series called Awkward Black Girl, she's come quite a long way to become the sitting President of Barbie Land in the 2023 blockbuster Barbie. She's done amazing work in films like American Fiction, The Lovebirds and The Photograph, and lent her voice to the iconic Marvel character Spider-Woman in Sony's massively successful animated film Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. She's even had the incredible opportunity to host Saturday Night Live. Issa has also notably put forth a lot of effort toward making more room for African American stories as the founder and CEO of her own film and TV production company, HOORAE. If a super successful career in entertainment wasn't enough, Issa has also found time to branch out into the retail space as co-founder and creative leader of the haircare brand Sienna Naturals—which we carry at Nordstrom—and more recently she's taken the role of chief storyteller for the jewelry brand Cast, which we also carry. We figured that all of the above was probably enough to earn her a spot on The Nordy Pod. Thanks for tuning in to episode 72. We hope you enjoy it! Did you know that YOU can be on The Nordy Pod? We are exploring the infinite feedback loop between television and society with pop culture historian/author Herbie J Pilato and Eric Scott, who played Ben on The Waltons. Herbie's newest book is called Retro Active Television: An In-Depth Perspective on Classic TV's Social Circuitry which includes a forward written by Eric!We hear about Eric's childhood adventures with his fellow Walton kids on the studio lot, how his relationship with his own parents ensured that his experience as a child actor was a positive one and why our social atmosphere in the 70s was open to positively receiving a warm and cozy show about a family weathering the Great Depression of 1930s. Herbie then gives us his extensively researched and passion-fueled perspective on the life-affirming TV shows of the past as he encourages us to avoid today's darker content while embracing and revisitng the charm and magic of Golden Era TV which is so readily available to us now, across many platforms. We talk about Kung Fu, TV Westerns, sit-coms then and now, the dawn of the miniseries event, After School Specials (some of which featured Eric!) and TV as an educational and inspiring resource. Michael Learned is remarkable in her entirety. Growing up in Vienna, Austria, she despised her masculine name, developed nervous shakes and discovered that her “diplomat” father was a CIA spy. She drove down from San Francisco and landed the iconic role of Olivia Walton which earned her three Emmys.
