This week's show covers new music from Cambridgeshire's SBTRKT, Newcastle Upon Tyne's Kathryn Williams, London's Jessie Ware, and West London's George Riley. For the archive track this week, Mark breaks out of our recent ‘90s fixation with a tune from the aughts, 2007 in fact. Off to Paris for the Michael Jackson besotted “D.A.N.C.E” by the one and only Justice. (They soundtrack that electric Volvo XC 60 ad too, though with a different tune.) Yes, time is a flat circle and music from 2007 still sounds futuristic. ;)Of course, there are six more bonus tracks, but you have to sign up for our email newsletter to get those. (Great music is included there, too, ladies and gentlemen.) It's pretty easy to do, if you just click this link. (And do so without fear. We won't misuse your email address, as this show is run by two guys, Mark and Brendan; Not some faceless corporation.) Lastly, don't miss our fabulous Spotify playlists. George Riley - "say yes (feat. Joe Armon-Jones)" from the 2021 self-released album interest rates, a tape. She may only be 23-years-old, but West London-based artist George Riley draws on her lifetime of influences on her latest release, interest rates, a tape. Her Jewish mother and Jamaican father would play R&B icons like Stevie Wonder, Aretha, and Sade in the house, and her dad was briefly a drummer and backing vocalist in '70s reggae group Steel Pulse. She channels all of that into interest rates, a tape, explaining toCrack Magazine, “This is me wanting to show the breadth of sounds that have inspired me, because I don't subscribe to just one thing.” Read the full post on KEXP.org Support the show: https://www.kexp.org/donate See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Hello Groovers, Sometimes it is deliciously lovely to let a set flow free and take you on a wild associative ride. This is one of those! We start of with some gorgeous poppy electronic drum & bass funk (!?) with tracks by amongst others George Riley and Remi Wolf. We then take the wonky bass lines of these tracks and extrapolate these to Bootsy and Johnny Guitar Watson. This leads, strangely enough, to some very early underground proto hip-hop with one of my favourite tracks of all time - Pokey Blow with Go to School! This track uses a great sample of Dance To The Drummers Beat to drive home the message. And if in doubt, add more cowbell!! And does it stop there, no it doesn't. There's more - listen and find out….. Oh yeah, good times! Deejay Maarten Vlot QC Put on your boogie pants and dancing shoes and come on down for some Liquid Sunshine.
