George Riley - "say yes (feat. Joe Armon-Jones)" from the 2021 self-released album interest rates, a tape. She may only be 23-years-old, but West London-based artist George Riley draws on her lifetime of influences on her latest release, interest rates, a tape. Her Jewish mother and Jamaican father would play R&B icons like Stevie Wonder, Aretha, and Sade in the house, and her dad was briefly a drummer and backing vocalist in '70s reggae group Steel Pulse. We start of with some gorgeous poppy electronic drum & bass funk (!?) with tracks by amongst others George Riley and Remi Wolf. We then take the wonky bass lines of these tracks and extrapolate these to Bootsy and Johnny Guitar Watson. This leads, strangely enough, to some very early underground proto hip-hop with one of my favourite tracks of all time - Pokey Blow with Go to School! This track uses a great sample of Dance To The Drummers Beat to drive home the message. And if in doubt, add more cowbell!! And does it stop there, no it doesn't.
