The wonderful civil rights elder Vincent Harding liked to look around the world for what he called "live human signposts" — human beings who embody ways of seeing and becoming and who point the way forward to the world we want to inhabit. And adrienne maree brown, who has inspired worlds of social creativity with her notions of "pleasure activism" and "emergent strategy," is surely one of these. We're listening with new ears as she brings together so many of the threads that have recurred in this season of On Being: on looking the harsh complexity of this world full in the face while dancing with joy as life force and fuel, and on keeping clear eyes on the reasons for ecological despair while giving oneself over to a loving apprenticeship with the natural world as teacher and guide. A love of visionary science fiction also finds a robust place in her work and this conversation. She altogether shines a light on an emerging ecosystem in our world over and against the drumbeat of what is fractured and breaking — the cultivation of old and new ways of seeing, towards a transformative wholeness of living.adrienne maree brown's influential books include Emergent Strategy, We Will Not Cancel Us, and Pleasure Activism. More recently, she has published Maroons, a work of speculative fiction, and she co-edited the anthology Octavia's Brood: Science Fiction from Social Justice Movements. She also co-hosts the podcast How to Survive the End of the World. And, a special heads up: in late summer 2024, adrienne maree brown will publish a phenomenal new book — Loving Corrections.Find the transcript for this show at onbeing.org.______Sign up for The Pause — a Saturday morning companion newsletter to the On Being podcast season, and our mailing list for news and invitations all year round. This week we are rebroadcasting our interview with adrienne maree brown which originally aired in April 2019.adrienne maree brown begins this week's episode by asking, “If we were not ashamed of our pleasure, what would become possible? If we started to understand that pleasure is something that everyone should have access to, what would become possible?”This week on For The Wild, we are exploring how to embody pleasure in its many forms with adrienne maree brown. Drawing upon Audre Lorde's seminal publication, Uses of the Erotic: The Erotic as Power, adrienne maree brown's latest book, Pleasure Activism: The Politics of Feeling Good, reiterates how once we truly know the pleasure of being alive, suffering becomes unimaginable. Above all, pleasure resides in our body, but many of us seem to forget this through lifetimes of social conditioning, performative identities, and the multitude of ways in which capitalism and patriarchy have filtered love and desire through the lens of ownership. Yet, whether we are cognizant of this or not, our pleasure and our liberation remain inextricably bound together.adrienne maree brown is the author of Emergent Strategy: Shaping Change, Changing Worlds and Pleasure Activism: The Politics of Feeling Good and co-editor of Octavia's Brood: Science Fiction from Social Justice Movements. adrienne facilitates social justice and Black liberation through the Emergent Strategy Ideation Institute, the Detroit Narrative Agency and is part of Black Organizing for Leadership and Dignity. She and her sister, Autumn Brown, co-host the How to Survive the End of the World podcast. Music by The Boom Booms, JB the First Lady, and Small Town.Support the show

What does a just climate future look like? In this bonus episode Ayana and guest adrienne maree brown discuss Imagine 2200, Fix's climate-fiction contest, which recognizes stories that envision the next 180 years of equitable climate progress, imagining intersectional worlds of abundance, adaptation, reform, and hope. Turning towards fueling the imagination, this episode touches on stewarding a just future and the value of presence with ourselves, each other, and the movements we dedicate ourselves to. We are in a battle for our attention and for our imaginations. The winner will determine the future of the climate and of humanity. Facing this reality, and the reality of a changing climate is not easy, but despair around this can bring us closer to the earth and to each other when it is used as a learning tool. In the shift from panic to practice, visionary fiction is vital medicine, and adrienne guides us to stretch our minds to see a future beyond what the confines of white supremacy, colonialism, heteropatriarchy, and capitalism tell us is possible. adrienne maree brown is the writer-in-residence at the Emergent Strategy Ideation Institute, and author of Grievers (the first novella in a trilogy on the Black Dawn imprint), Holding Change: The Way of Emergent Strategy Facilitation and Mediation, We Will Not Cancel Us and Other Dreams of Transformative Justice, Pleasure Activism: The Politics of Feeling Good, Emergent Strategy: Shaping Change, Changing Worlds and the co-editor of Octavia's Brood: Science Fiction from Social Justice Movements and How to Get Stupid White Men Out of Office. It is important for me to pay homage to those people who have impacted my life. The Audre Lorde's, the Oprah's, the Brene Brown's. Viewing their work and seeing them be honest and free, inspired my personal journey of finding myself and my voice. So this episode is extra special because today's guest is the one and only adrienne maree brown. She is a writer, podcast host, and organizer, and we have an amazing conversation about life, acceptance, and connection. adrienne describes how growing up in a biracial home, and splitting her time between the U.S. and Germany, opened her up to learning different cultures and ways of being. She talks about the interconnectedness of human nature, and how she manages her influence on others. And, she expresses the importance of listening to your body and making choices that will benefit you. Check out her website https://adriennemareebrown.net/ to learn more! adrienne maree brown begins this week’s episode by asking, “If we were not ashamed of our pleasure, what would become possible? If we started to understand that pleasure is something that everyone should have access to, what would become possible?” This week on For The Wild, we are exploring how to embody pleasure in its many forms with adrienne maree brown. Drawing upon Audre Lorde’s seminal publication, Uses of the Erotic: The Erotic as Power, adrienne maree brown’s latest book, Pleasure Activism: The Politics of Feeling Good, reiterates how once we truly know the pleasure of being alive, suffering becomes unimaginable. Above all, pleasure resides in our body, but many of us seem to forget this through lifetimes of social conditioning, performative identities, and the multitude of ways in which capitalism and patriarchy have filtered love and desire through the lens of ownership. Yet, whether we are cognizant of this or not, our pleasure and our liberation remain inextricably bound together. adrienne maree brown is the author of Emergent Strategy: Shaping Change, Changing Worlds and Pleasure Activism: The Politics of Feeling Good and co-editor of Octavia’s Brood: Science Fiction from Social Justice Movements. adrienne facilitates social justice and Black liberation through the Emergent Strategy Ideation Institute, the Detroit Narrative Agency and is part of Black Organizing for Leadership and Dignity. She and her sister, Autumn Brown, co-host the How to Survive the End of the World podcast. This captivating conversation explores how the denial of pleasure contributes to our own oppression, how radical honesty and kindness can transform our relationships, moving through the limitations placed on radical imagination and desire, the importance of pleasure beyond sex, and how our pain and sorrow is a measurement of our pleasure and joy. We hope this conversation inspires you in your own experimentation when it comes to acceptance, desire, and liberated relationships as we collectively pursue sustainable long-term pleasure. I am over the moon to get to share this with you. adrienne maree brown is one of my biggest heroes. Her work has influenced me on a very deep and transformative level, so getting to speak with her about her new book, "Pleasure Activism: The Politics of Feeling Good" was a dream come true. We talk pleasure, pleasure activism, drugs, sex, and so much more. adrienne explains how pleasure activism is anti-capitalist because it's not about spending more money, but about tapping out of believing something is wrong with you and instead realizing you are enough as you are and you can access enough-ness and satisfaction through your body today. We talk about what gets taken from us, what it means to center the most marginalized when we consider access to pleasure, what it means to be satisfiable versus numbing out, and why all of this helps us to settle more deeply into our own wisdom and healing. AK Press, an independent anarchist publisher, has "Pleasure Activism" on sale RIGHT NOW for just $15 before February 24th when it gets released. Support them, support adrienne, buy it today. This Monday February 19th on KPFA Radio's Women's Magazine, Viveka Jagadeseen talks to author and activist Adrienne Maree Brown about how we can organize a resilient mass movement capable of creating fundamental social change in today's political climate with an understanding of social change inspired by the resilience and adaptive nature of biological systems, that is non hierarchical and non harming. Adrienne Maree Brown, is a social justice facilitator, healer, and doula living in Detroit. Brown is the Co-editor of Octavia's Brood: Science Fiction from Social Justice Movements, and author most recently of Emergent Strategy: Shaping Change, Changing Worlds a book described as a “resolutely materialist “spirituality” based equally on science and science fiction, a visionary incantation to transform that which ultimately transforms us” and expands our radical imagination. The post Adrienne Maree Brown – visionary social change appeared first on KPFA.
Do you have your “go bag” ready? Are you ready to lose everything and everyone in order to get free? Aren't these intense questions?? These are just some of the themes that are explored in Parable of the Sower and Parable of the Talents, a two-book series of dystopian, science fiction novels by the late Octavia E. Butler, where society has collapsed due to climate change, capitalism, and Christianity, and people, many strangers, have to create community in order to survive. For this special live audience episode, Monica and Page are joined by writer, facilitator, Octavia Butler-scholar, pleasure activist and doula, adrienne maree brown. adrienne is the author of Emergent Strategy and co-editor of the anthology, Octavia's Brood: Science Fiction for Social Justice Movements.
