In this episode, we speak with singer/songwriter Bruce Sudano. Brue has been writing and co-writing award-winning songs for 6 decades for such artists as Tommy James, Brooklyn Dreams, Jermaine Jackson, and Dolly Parton. Bruce was married to Donna Summer for 3 decades before she death in 2012. He co-wrote many songs with Donna, including Bad Girls. He is still writing and performing today and we discuss his latest solo album Talkin' Ugly Truth, Tellin Pretty Lies.

Beyond the Pearls: Cases for Med School, Residency and Beyond (An InsideTheBoards Podcast)
Today's Episode Alexis reviews Case 48 from the Pediatric Morning Report book. A 7-week-old term male infant is brought in by his mother to the emergency department (ED) for the second time, with the chief complaint of episodes of pauses in breathing dur- ing sleep. These episodes are associated with perioral cyanosis lasting about 15 to 20 seconds, which resolves with gentle stimulation, such as tickling of his feet. Sometimes, these episodes are associated with pallor. His past medical history is significant for low Apgar scores requir- ing observation in the neonatal infant care unit (NICU), where he was noted to have periodic breathing. He was first seen at the ED at 1 month of age for short apnea and pallor, where he was observed overnight and diagnosed with a brief, resolved, unexplained event (BRUE). On physical examination, temperature is 36.9°C, heart rate is 130 beats/min, blood pressure is 87/50 mm Hg, respiratory rate is 32 breaths/min, and oxygen saturation is 97% on room air. He is well nourished, well developed, and not in respiratory distress. The breath sounds are clear. The rest of the physical examination is normal. In this weeks episode I sit down with Dr Bruce Lipton for a conversation about how our subconscious programming affects our life in so many different ways and how to change the program that we've been given at an early age. Bruce began his career as a cell biologist before joining the department of anatomy at the university of Wisconsin´s school of medicin in 1973. One of the many things that I find so fascinating with Bruce's work is the bridging of science and spirituality and the perspective of how change is truly possible. Bruce is also known for the best selling book ”The Biology of Belief” where he sets out the idea that our thoughts affects the expression of our genes. In this conversation you will hear us talk about: If 95% of our behavior comes from our subconscious mind, how can we become more aware of our programming? How can we integrate and reprogram our programming from something destructive to empowering? What are some of the collective beliefs the we, as a collective, will need to change in order for us as a species to survive? The clue to these is very much in the Title – BRUE is a diagnosis in itself. Children often do weird stuff, but they rarely do weird scary stuff. In this talk, Jilly goes talks through how we can define these events as high and low risk and gives us tools to manage these patients (and their parents) Along with colleagues, Jilly has written a guideline for BRUE, the full version of which you can find here Jilly also mentions a flowchart from Peds Cases, which you can find here There is also this superb blog post from Natalie May on the St Emlyn's website which accompanies this podcast, which goes through some really useful cases. As a Wessex ST7 in Paediatric Emergency Medicine (RCPCH), Jilly Boden currently works in Queen Alexandra Hospital (Portsmouth). Her specialist interests include acute stabilisation and transfer of the critically ill patient, having spent a year with the 'Southampton & Oxford Retrieval Team' (SORT) and hopes to find a way of combining this with her future PEM career. Jilly has a passion for education, particularly 'PEM to the non-paediatrician', including international teaching of the tri-service military GPs, and being on the national committee to write a new standardised paramedic paediatric curriculum. In her free time (you know, apart from the kids and all that) she works as part of the track medical team for the 'British Motorcycle Racing Club', providing pre-hospital care to high velocity polytrauma patients in the 'golden hour' following collisions often exceeding 120mph.

How can designing and using technology actually be a way of loving God and our neighbors? On this episode, we interview three veteran engineers to understand how that particular vocation can be reintegrated with the mission of God. Our guests have co-written a truly unique book, A Christian Field Guide to Technology for Engineers and Designers (IVP Academic, 2022). Our guests are: Steven VanderLeest (PhD in computer engineering, University of Illinois) is a software technical lead at The Boeing Company. Previously, he was a professor of engineering at Calvin University. He was also the first president of the Christian Engineering Society. He has worked as an engineering consultant in the energy generation sector and as a research and development engineer in the agricultural science and technology industry. Derek Schuurman (PhD in electrical engineering, McMaster University) is professor of computer science at Calvin University. He previously worked in industry as an engineer, designing embedded systems. He has done research in the areas of robotics and computer vision as well as faith and technology issues.
