Alternative title: We Can't Do Anything Right. This episode ran way longer than we intended, and we had to do some heavy edits. We're sorry it's such a hefty episode! We have so much passion about Studio Ghibli, we couldn't contain it! Castle in the Sky: 1986 First Film. Inspired by Gulliver's Travels. Name taken from Gulliver's Travels, meaningless in Japanese “Laputa” My Neighbor Totoro: 1988 Third Film Released in United States as My Friend Totoro by Fox Video. Disney released in 2006 One of the most recognized characters from anime Miyazaki has said that Totoro is "not a spirit: he's only an animal. I believe he lives on acorns. He's supposedly the forest keeper, but that's only a half-baked idea, a rough approximation" The character of Mei was modeled on Miyazaki's niece. Mei and the Kittenbus released in 2003 in Japan, 13 minutes long, often shown at The Ghibli Museum Whisper of the Heart/The Cat Returns: 1995 Eighth Film/2002 Twelfth Film First Japanese film in Dolby Digital First film where Miyazaki was the screenwriter and not the director. Based on the manga Mimi wo Sumaseba. The spiritual successor, The Cat Returns was turned into a manga after the film was released, called Baron: Neko no Danshaku. Muta and the crow are seen in The Secret World of Arrietty as two animals fighting. The Cat Returns was originally going to be a short film about 20 minutes long for a theme park, but the project was cancelled, so Miyazaki took the existing work and gave it to Studio Ghibli to be adapted into a larger project. The Film was made because the main character, Haru, had a “believable feel to her”. Princess Mononoke: 1997 Ninth Film Mononoke is a japanese word for spirit or monster. Miyazaki drew sketches of a princess living in the woods with a beast in the late 70's. He had difficulty adapting his ideas, because he already used them in Totoro. The final storyboards were completed just a few months before the release of the film. The film draws a comparison to the destructive nature of humans toward natural resources and the environment. About humans and nature fighting for a balance. Miramax Films, then a subsidiary of The Walt Disney Company, purchased the film's distribution rights for North America. Miyazaki met with Harvey Weinstein, Miramax's chairman; Weinstein demanded that edits should be made to Princess Mononoke. In response, Toshio Suzuki sent Weinstein a katana with a message stating "No cuts." Highest grossing film in Japan until Titanic was released several months later Spirited Away: 2001 Eleventh Film First Miyazaki film to use a 100% digital process Grossed $200 Million Worldwide before opening in North America Overtook Titanic at the Japanese box office, becoming the top grossing film in the history of Japanese Cinema. The only anime winner of an Academy award for Best Animated Feature Howl's Moving Castle: 2004 Thirteenth Film Based on the novel Howl's Moving Castle, but is very different than the book. Characters die in the book that do not in the film, Sophie has magic powers, there is a war going on. Howl has an alias known as “The Great Wizard Jenkins” Homework: Joker Game- Studio: Production I.G. (Haikyuu!!, Attack on Titan, Kuroko's Basketball, Bunny Drop, Psycho Pass) Paprika- Studio: Madhouse (Hunter x Hunter, One Punch Man, Wolf Children, Monster, Death Note, The Girl Who Leapt Through Time) Shout out to our Logo Designer at turvytops.com Say what's up to us Facebook: Instant Ramen Podcast Twitter: @instantramenpod E-mail: instantramenpodcast@gmail.com
