The 2026 Ghost in the Shell anime has reached its conclusion—and now it's time for the FINAL VERDICT! We review Episodes 9 & 10, break down the ending, and look back at the entire 10-episode Prime Video adaptation. Did Science SARU's incredibly faithful adaptation of Masamune Shirow's manga live up to the hype, or did the series ultimately fall short? We discuss our disappointment with the finale, the incredible visuals, pacing problems, character development, Motoko Kusanagi's journey and identity crisis, and the larger themes of self, identity, consciousness, and what makes Ghost in the Shell so enduring. We also compare the 2026 adaptation with Mamoru Oshii's Ghost in the Shell (1995), Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence, Stand Alone Complex, Arise, and the live-action adaptations before giving our FINAL Ghost in the Shell franchise rankings. And the biggest question: SHOULD SCIENCE SARU ADAPT THE NEXT TWO GHOST IN THE SHELL MANGA?

In a world ravaged by war, two mercenaries named Deunan and Briareos accept an offer to live in a mysterious metropolis known as Olympus. Once inside the city, the two end up joining the city police force, but can't seem to shake the feeling something isn't right about the supposed utopia... And just maybe, this life isn't better than the one they left behind scavenging beyond the city walls! On this week's episode, Mat is joined once again by writer and artist, Ian Sta. Maria to discuss Masamune Shirow's debut work, Appleseed! With the new omnibus editions from Dark Horse about to hit shelves, we thought now was the perfect time to crack out our old (flipped!) copies and talk about what makes the book so special. We get into Shirow's incredible creative vision, where his love of drawing ladies took his career, and how we feel about a story thats as hard sci-fi as you're likely to see on the pages of a manga!---Show Notes---First up! Show Notes 0:00: Justin and Helen for yet another week chat about all the things they’ve been up to, which involves Helen explaining that she’s gotten her mom to watch Showa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu (and wondering how Justin would know this before the podcast), while Justin’s caught up to all the Fall anime shows, which includes the Gintama spinoff, Mr. Ginpachi's Zany Class. News 6:43: The two hosts then get into Netflix entering an agreement to purchase Warner Bros, HBO & HBO Max. The good news is the planned deal would take until Q3 2026 to actually close. That’s only good because both hosts (Justin especially) are not even sure how big the ramifications of this deal will be, who or what it’ll affect (aside from the consumer, who no matter what will lose), and what this will mean for the Entertainment industry at large. …Of course, not even a day after the two talked about this, a hostile bid from Paramount was announced, which means the hosts will try and talk about that next episode! 15:08: Justin and Helen attempt to figure out what Amazon was actually thinking when they chose to AI dub a couple of anime, to much derision, and then pull it off their service. It does get the hosts to think a bit darker, and why despite this being over, it’s not actually over when it comes to AI dubbing. 27:34: Yuki Ikeda’s Thunder 3 is slated to resume serialization February 6, which suggests Ikeda is healthy enough to resume the manga; Terraformars is also slated to resume next week, after it did see an initial delay during the summer and fall. 28:53: Shinsuke Takahashi’s family shared details of what has happened to the artist a few weeks ago, and the details are not very good. The hosts can only hope for the best for Takahashi moving forward. Licenses 34:04: Following them taking off for Thanksgiving, Seven Seas resumed their Wonderful Wednesdays event and announced they’ve licensed the following: HEKIRU HIKAWA's Hanaori-san Still Wants to Fight in the Next Life AKI YUKURA's Crow Hill: Don’t Be Shy!! – The Complete BL Manga Collection IKUHITO & OHANACHAN's Record of Lustful Warriors: The Rod Master's Unstoppable Conquest in Another World (Ghost Ship) Tsuki Aimi's Lazy Girl Momogusa Coolkyousinnjya & Cometubu's Miss Kobayashi's Dragon Maid: Ilulu Doesn't Understand Love Mitsu Hashimoto's The Prince’s Body Pillow 35:19: Dark Horse announced exclusively on ANN that they'll release a three-book Deluxe Edition manga series of the following Masamune Shirow works: Appleseed Deluxe Edition (The Deluxe Edition hardcover includes books one to four of the series and has 848 pages, slated for August 2026) Appleseed Companion Deluxe Edition Shirow Masamune Anthology Deluxe Edition 36:49: Noir Caesar is partnering with TOKYOPOP to release Mitsuhiro Mizuno and artist Ryōsuke Tobimatsu’s Deep3 basketball manga in 2026; Hiroyuki’s Girlfriend, Girlfriend manga is now part of the Kodansha Print Club line, and it’s available on select retailers…today! Streaming News 40:08: 4K Kiki’s Delivery Service? 4K Kiki’s Delivery Service!!!…Well, at least Justin thinks so. With GKIDS partnering with IMAX to bring 4K restorations of Studio Ghibli films to North American theaters in 2026, then that means Kiki in 4K should happen! (maybe just not next year, but we’ll have to see the rate of releases though); GKIDS will be bringing the latest Lupin the 3rd film to North America in January; and The 100 Meters film will be on Netflix before the year’s ends, which makes one host happy and one host less interested! 44:54: We’re getting another anime (for Netflix) just announced out of nowhere for the Winter season, and it pairs Boys Over Flowers creator Yoko Kamio with the Wit Studio crew; Chainsaw Man fans who wanted to watch the Reze Arc film but was not willing or able to go a theater to see it can now purchase it digitally…today; And we have a couple anime that will be streaming on Crunchyroll, either for the Winter season (Tamon’s B-Side) or sometime in 2026 (The Drops of God) 47:15: Ever heard of Whale Smart TVs? Well now Crunchyroll is on the service; Ever heard of VIZIO’s WatchFree+? Well now you can get REMOW’s Its Anime service on that app! Weird News 49:56: Weird fish discovery and Super Saiyan in one sentence? We can only thank the The University of the Ryukyus for discovering the goby fish and making the connection to a Saiyan. 51:47: Both Justin and Helen are curious about Korean webtoon and web novel platform RIDI suspending sales of BL novel Crazy Dog Hunts the Tiger only a day after its release a few weeks ago, following accusations it closely mirrors very notable pro gamer Faker. This somehow gets Helen to cook up an absolutely insane scenario (56:22) in this section. 57:51: The combination of Silent Möbius and The Avengers would be less weird decades ago, but in 2025? Both hosts have…questions…even if there is some curiosity about it! 1:00:08: And finally, just what Hideaki Anno needed…a figure of himself as Ultraman! In this episode, we trace the origins of the cyberpunk classic, starting with Masamune Shirow's original manga and following the career of visionary director Mamoru Oshii up through his groundbreaking work on GHOST IN THE SHELL. We dig into the film's production process—from its innovative animation techniques to the challenges of bringing such a complex story to the screen—and look at how it was marketed ahead of release. Along the way, we explore how anime began to make waves beyond Japan's borders, and how landmark films like AKIRA helped pave the way for a global audience hungry for ambitious, adult animation. Cyberpunk is a cool genre we have never covered exclusively on a Quackcast before. But what IS cyberpunk? It's a subset of SciFi, it's usually near future, involves body modifications, grittiness, street level computer use, techno body modification, and hacking. At least that's the way it started. Formative influences on the cyberpunk genre were the first Tron movie, Bladerunner, and Escape from New York. Tron showed us what cyberspace was, while Bladerunner and Escape from New York gave us gritty near future dystopias with cool tech, modified humans, and most importantly the punk aesthetic which was the gritty street youth fashion of the late 70s and early 80s. Punks plus computers signalled a more universal use of the new technology of computers in the near future world especially as imagined by Willian Gibson with his novel Neuromancer. There were other influential cyberpunk writers like Neal Stephenson with SnowCrash and many more. My fave was Manga creator Masamune Shirow with his books like Ghost in the Shell, Appleseed and more which tackle subjects like trans-humanisim as humans evolve with technology and then INTO technology itself. In the late 80s and early 90s cyberpunk was very influential in anime with the likes of the Ghost in the Shell movie, Bubblegum crisis, AD police, and the amazing milestone that is Akira! A very formative game in the world of cyberpunk was the RPG Shadowrun, which was near future urban fantasy plus cyberpunk in all its pure glory. These days we have the computer game Cyberpunk 2020, but it's an extremely derivative and pale shadow of what had gone before it, it functions as a sort of a retro “greatest hits” of the genre, but it's a good intro into it and that goes for the Netflix anime of the same name. There were various unrelated genres inspired by cyberpunk- Steampunk, Dieselpunk, and the later dubious genres raypunk and atompunk which are just rebranded early standard SciFi. What is your fave example of cyberpunk? Do you know what cyberpunk is? When did you first come to cyberpunk? This week Gunwallace gave us a theme inspired by The Return of Jake Sunrise - A desolate red dirt desert, a wind whistles through and carries with it a torrent of sound and energy, flooding in like a sudden rainstorm, bringing with it life, colour, and revitalisation! On this week's episode, I'm joined by Graphic Designer / Comic artist Jibé to discuss the classic manga The Ghost in The Shell by Masamune Shirow.Originally published from April 1989 to November 1990 in Kodansha's Young Magazine, The Ghost in the Shell is considered a seminal work not only in the manga sphere, but as a foundational piece of the cyber punk genre. It is the tale of cyborg super agent Major Motoko Kusanagi and the Public Security Section 9 counter-cyberterrorist organisation. When Major Kusanagi tracks the master hacker, the Puppet Master, her quest leads her into a world beyond information and technology where the very nature of consciousness and the human soul are turned upside down. It's a tale of politics, technology and metaphysics that poses the question: what does it truly mean to be human?Join us as we role up our philosophical (not to mention metaphorical) sleeves to discuss the themes of the book, compare what's on the page to the anime OVA and somehow end up drawing comparisons between it and classical literature... Thanks to Juliano Zucareli for our theme music!Find us on:X: Manga Tak PodBluesky: Manga Tak PodInstagram: Manga Tak Pod

"Ghost in the Shell," an iconic tale of cybernetic evolution and identity, first materialized as a groundbreaking 1995 animated film, directed by Mamoru Oshii. Adapted from Masamune Shirow's manga, the film is a Japanese-British international co-production, visually melding traditional cel animation with CGI. Its narrative unfolds in 2029 Japan, focusing on Major Motoko Kusanagi, a cyborg public-security agent on the hunt for an enigmatic hacker known as the Puppet Master. The film interweaves profound philosophical themes about self-identity in an age where technology blurs the lines between human and machine.

[School of Movies 2023] One of the most significant and influential anime movies of all time. Absolutely instrumental in inspiring a big chunk of The Matrix in terms of aesthetic and pondering, metaphysical philosophy. This began as a single-volume cyberpunk manga series written by Masamune Shirow between 1989-1991. That was adapted into the 1995 movie which is the focus of this episode. After that came a bunch of television we are not touching, a sequel focused on the character of Batau, named Innocence, which we recommend, a re-envisioned remaster called 2.0 which swaps the janky 90s CG and green aesthetic for janky 2000s CG and amber aesthetic. Then a bunch more movies and TV and manga. And then in 2017, American studios who always seem to keep making the same mistakes when they adapt anime directly into live action filmed a giant mistake in 2017. The Scarlett Johansson movie is actually better than it could have been, but it makes a fine talking point as comparison between the attitudes and approaches to the presentation of what seems like the same story but is actually quite different.

The movie doesn't have enough time to tell the broad story of the source material, and ends up resorting to long monologues to communicate its ideas. We both enjoyed this film and found it intellectually engaging, we just wish it had been able to flesh out its ideas more fully. Thanks for joining us for another episode! Her books include Extrastatecraft: The Power of Infrastructure Space (Verso, 2014); Enduring Innocence: Global Architecture and its Political Masquerades (MIT, 2005); and her latest Medium Design: Knowing How to Work on the World, to which we dedicate special attention to in this episode.I think Easterling's project boils down to how architecture and design can actually intervene and/or contribute to the cultural change around social justice and ecological crises; through thinking about, and ‘knowing-how' to work the systems at play. So designing within interplay; rather than the total compliance and submission on behalf of the architectural profession is what she seeks. She redirects our attention to the spatial dimension of how things are arranged, be it politically, financially, or socially. While Ghost in the Shell began its life as a manga in the late '80s, the 1995 animated feature film that interpreted its story is what most people are familiar with. Created by renowned artist and writer Masamune Shirow and brought to the big screen by Mamoru Oshii, Ghost in the Shell deals with surprisingly heady subject matter: Science, politics, philosophy, and morality, amongst many other themes. The future world of cyborgs and humans envisioned in this work isn't too far off the mark, either, particularly when compared to other works of cyberpunk that are much more fanciful and overtly fictional in their approach. Overall, this is perhaps what makes Ghost in the Shell so notable to so many. It feels alive and true-to-form. And it's certainly worth a deep dive right here on KnockBack. Time Codes: 00:00:30 - Introduction 00:02:43 - Apologies 00:04:14 - Revolutionary Girl Utena Complete Deluxe Box Set 00:51:13 - Ghost in the Shell Deluxe Edition 01:21:23 - Wrap up 01:24:26 - Contact us On this episode of the manga series -- a few days later than expected -- Shea and Derek discuss two new deluxe editions of older titles. They begin with Revolutionary Girl Utena Complete Deluxe Box Set, soon to be released by VIZ Media. This is a different kind of shōjo, one that the guys don't often encounter, and an aspect that makes this title stand out is its conceptual genesis. Revolutionary Girl Utena was conceived by the creative team known as Be-Papas but written and drawn by Chiho Saito (also a  member of Be_Papas). Shea and Derek discuss the "collaborative feel" of its genesis and the unusual mix of characters, costumes, and scenarios that define the series. Next, the guys turn to a new deluxe edition of Masamune Shirow's classic Ghost in the Shell, just released by Kodansha Comics. The paperback versions of this title, and of the two follow-up volumes, are still in print, but Kodansha now has these wonderful new hardbound editions. The new Ghost in the Shell volumes stand out because for the first time in English, the story is presented in the original right-to-left reading order, they retain the author's original hand-drawn sound effects, the translation has been updated, and everything has been done under the author's supervision. Both Shea and Derek have a great time revisiting Ghost in the Shell, and they hope that Kodansha will be bringing back more of Shirow's manga -- e.g., Appleseed and Dominion -- in these nice deluxe editions.

Just in time for Halloween, this episode is all about Ghost in the Shell!...ok, so Ghost in the Shell has little to do with Ghosts (or Shells!) But in this episode, returning guest NewtypeLady (who you might remember from my Gundam episode not too long ago) & I talk about the legacy of Masamune Shirow's 80s cyberpunk classic, and the many incarnations of it and The Major. Listen as we talk about philosophy, Mamoru Oshii's dog, and what a surprisingly great role-model Major Motoko Kusanagi is for women & cyborgs everywhere.
