The hosts of the Otaku Spirit Animecast sit down to discuss, oddly enough, the most complicated genre to really nail down. The Slice of Life Genre seems to cover everything, but some argue doesn’t cover much. Listen and get the hosts’ take. Topics Covered in this Episode: What is Slice of Life, The Convolution of the Genre, Opinion Against Sub-Genres, Opinions Against Unnatural Elements in Slice of Life, What Slice of Life Means To You, Pros and Cons of Slice of Life, and breaking down several shows on their validity of Slice of Life label. The opening song for this episode is the OP1 for Hanasaku Iroha called “Hana no Iro” by nano.RIPE. The closing for this episode is the ED for Showa Genroku Rakugo Shinju called “Kawa, Taredoki” by Kana Shibue.
This week's manga log: Flying Witch, written and illustrated by Chihiro Ishizuka. Description (courtesy of MAL): In the witches' tradition, when a practitioner turns 15, they must become independent and leave their home to study witchcraft. Makoto Kowata is one such apprentice witch who leaves her parents' home in Yokohama in pursuit of knowledge and training. Along with her companion Chito, a black cat familiar, they embark on a journey to Aomori, a region favored by witches due to its abundance of nature and affinity with magic. They begin their new life by living with Makoto's second cousins, Kei Kuramoto and his little sister Chinatsu. While Makoto may seem to be attending high school like any other teenager, her whimsical and eccentric involvement with witchcraft sets her apart from others her age. From her encounter with an anthropomorphic dog fortune teller to the peculiar magic training she receives from her older sister Akane, Makoto's peaceful everyday life is filled with the idiosyncrasies of witchcraft that she shares with her friends and family. This week's manga log: Sweetness & Lightning written and illustrated by Gido Amagakure. Description (courtesy of MAL): Since the death of his wife, Kouhei Inuzuka has been caring for his young daughter Tsumugi to the best of his abilities. However, with his lack of culinary knowledge and his busy job as a teacher, he is left relying on ready-made meals from convenience stores to feed the little girl. Frustrated at his own incapability to provide a fresh, nutritious meal for his daughter, Kouhei takes up an offer from his student, Kotori Iida, to come have dinner at her family's restaurant. But on their very first visit, the father and daughter discover that the restaurant is often closed due to Kotori's mother being away for work and that Kotori often eats alone. After much pleading from his pupil, Kouhei decides to continue to go to the restaurant with Tsumugi to cook and share delicious homemade food with Kotori. Amaama to Inazuma follows the heartwarming story of a caring father trying his hardest to make his adorable little daughter happy, while exploring the meanings and values behind cooking, family, and the warm meals at home that are often taken for granted. **Judge Death Does Bollywood** It's time for your weekly dose of comics and manga with 4-Panel! Hidden in the mist of tangents and nonsense are the trailer for The New Mutants, Cable's existence as a movie character (but nobody is committed to saying much else), Marvel's plan for their very own brilliantly-monikered convention, and a new live-action adaptation of a legendary manga series. And Innuendo. Lots and lots of innuendo. This week's featured comics and manga are Rodolphe D. Jacquette's Trent: The Dead Man, Flying Witch, Goosebumps very own R.L Stine and his take on Man-Thing, The Black Beetle: Kara Bocek, Kingpin: Born Against and Hard Boiled from Captain Controversy himself - Frank Miller. Since we've got to spend most of June working on panels, we'll try and knock out an episode or two this month. This time around, Clarissa reviews the relatively recent anime series Flying Witch, for which print editions of the manga have just started to be released in English. I’m not ready!! Casey (@MinovskyArticle) and I aren’t ready for the next part of Slam Dunk, so here we are in June without a podcast…until now. I have this cockamamie plan to review the entirety of YuYu Hakusho with Chris (@gokuffy), Casey, Dawn (@bunnycartoon), and Ruby (@PassionTentacle), which will be coming soon. But until then! Here’s this episode zero of stuff tangentially related to the anime and stuff that actually happens after the anime. Good job me. Anyway, we’re here to talk about YuYu Hakusho The Movie and Eizou Hakusho, the things included in the Funimation OAV that was released back in 2011. Listen Show notes: 0:30 – Start the show! We talk about what we’ve been watching, including Ushio and Tora, The Lost Village, My Hero Academia, Kiznaiver, Sakamoto, Flying Witch, Joker Game, Bungo Stray Dogs, and Tanaka-kun. 31:45 – We talk about YuYu Hakusho! I give a YuYu Hakusho primer and we talk about the movie! 46:14 – We talk about the Eizou Hakusho stuff! The true MVPs of these discs. 1:06:49 – Chris tangents into the other YuYu Hakusho movie! And we tangent onto other stuff, inevitably. Next time, it’s a (hopefully) triumphant return of Slam Dunk!

The last podcast recording was lost to the digital void, but from the ashes I emerge with a new (and hopefully improved) recording method. Stickguy joins me in this new recording experiment, as we leave Skype behind to record on Discord. We've got a bunch of anime to talk about, but first we have to gush about the newest Persona 5 footage!
