This week's manga log: "Descending Stories," written and illustrated by Haruko Kumota. Description (courtesy of MyAnimeList): Yotarou is a former yakuza member fresh out of prison and fixated on just one thing: rather than return to a life of crime, the young man aspires to take to the stage of Rakugo, a traditional Japanese form of comedic storytelling. Inspired during his incarceration by the performance of distinguished practitioner Yakumo Yuurakutei, he sets his mind on meeting the man who changed his life. After hearing Yotarou's desperate appeal for his mentorship, Yakumo is left with no choice but to accept his very first apprentice. As he eagerly begins his training, Yotarou meets Konatsu, an abrasive young woman who has been under Yakumo's care ever since her beloved father Sukeroku Yuurakutei, another prolific Rakugo performer, passed away. Through her hidden passion, Yotarou is drawn to Sukeroku's unique style of Rakugo despite learning under contrasting techniques. Upon seeing this, old memories and feelings return to Yakumo who reminisces about a much earlier time when he made a promise with his greatest rival. Shouwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu is a story set in both the past and present, depicting the art of Rakugo, the relationships it creates, and the lives and hearts of those dedicated to keeping the unique form of storytelling alive. It's playoff time for a lot of things! LAFC has the first round bye in MLS, the Chicago Red Stars just won their semifinal match in NWSL, and nothing is good about baseball. Also basketball is about to start again, and I'm looking forward to jumping onto the Clippers x Kawhi bandwagon. Also, and I can't believe we're already here, but this is our 50th episode! We have many anniversaries here at The Televerse, but this episode brings a big one: our eighth annual Make-You-Watchathon. Each year, we celebrate by choosing one show to make each other watch, pushing our comfort zones and prompting each other to finally catch up with particularly meaningful and beloved series. This year, Kate’s up first, and she’s assigned Noel Schitt’s Creek season one. Noel’s pick is a favorite (semi-) recent anime, 2016’s Descending Stories: Showa Genroku Rakugo Shinju. Before we can get to the Make-You-Watchathon, though, we take a look at our week in TV, including a public transit-centered Patriot Act with Hasan Minhaj, Kate’s continued catch-up with Kim’s Convenience, the latest The Terror: Infamy, Mindhunter season two, the Pose finale, and another dramatic Queen Sugar. Take a listen, then reach out with your thoughts on the week’s TV, our Make-You-Watchathon picks, and eight long years of The Televerse. Thank you for listening! In our final episode of our first season of Oldtaku no Radio, we return to a show about which we could not stop praising in our first episode. We find the sequel/second season a little more divisive, which means there's even more to talk about. But don't worry, we keep things concise and focus on analysis instead of plot this time around. We look into the imagery, characters, plot devices, storytelling implementation, chronology, and more to hammer out why this anime is so effective. Listen, enjoy, and let us know what you think!

Welcome to a brand new monthly podcast, Oldtaku no Radio, hosted by Ink and Jared here at Ani-Gamers. This new cast spun off an impomptu recording by the aforementioned hosts after they hijacked the Ani-Gamers Podcast proper to review ReLife, but now it's its own monster. For their first official episode, Ink and Jared talk at length about the Winter 2016 anime Showa Genroku Rakugo Shinju. Adapted from Haruko Kumota's josei manga, this show largely follows the turbulent friendship of two sibling-like orators as they train through times of hardship, prosperity, war, and love. The anime is discussed in great detail, so there are plot spoilers. Rest assured, however, that there is no spoiling THIS anime; it's even better the second time around! If you have anything to add to the discussion, we welcome your comments. Send us an email at oldtakunoradio@anigamers.com or visit us at http://anigamers.com/podcast/oldtaku-no-radio/.
