We confess, we're terrible at saying no.Our lives are cluttered and we're not able to give 100% attention to each activity. We finish our days feeling exhausted instead of filled up. Making wise decisions with our time is as much about what we don't choose to do as what we do choose to do. On this episode, we're talking about spending our time wisely and making time with God our priority.- Follow us on Instagram | @lifeintherightlayne- For more ways to listen to the podcast, visit www.lifeintherightlayne.com

In this episode, Dave and Jamison answer these questions: Questions I have noticed the majority of the managers get stuck at a mid-management level and never move to C level. And, there are a few who experience astronomical growth. For example, I know a C-suite executive who has moved to his current role from a Web Developer role within 9 years and changed job only thrice. One more C-suite guy I know has gone to that position within 8 years in the same company. Unfortunately, I don’t have the rapport to ask either of these folks what I’m going to ask you, so here it goes. What makes some managers move very quickly up the management ladder, whereas the majority remain stuck in mid-management? Also, at the mid-management level, how detrimental is job-hopping to quick growth. Looking at my small sample size of 2, both have not hopped around much. Hi, love the show. I have a history of working as a Voice Engineer but since I got my last job I have migrated towards more Sysadmin/Devops type job. This was on purpose as I absolutely HATE the voice stuff. The problem is that I still have a bunch of people coming up and asking me to help with Voice related issues or projects. I have tried to very subtly express I am not interested but it doesn’t seem to work. I am probably also guilty because I am a yes man and want to be the nice guy so I don’t say no to these requests. So the question is, how do I get away from my past and stop people from coming up to me with questions about a domain I dread/hate? Show Notes https://lethain.com/career-narratives/

The 6-Figure Freelancer Podcast | Freelancing | Entrepreneurship | Clients | Finances | Motivation | Personal Development | M

Proposals are an important part of freelancing. There isn't “one way” to write proposals. Different situations require different kinds of proposals. However, we can always improve, and here are some strategies that will help you write great proposals your clients will love. 1. Cut the fluff Your clients are busy people. They are CEOs, founders, entrepreneurs, etc. They don't have time to wade through a giant proposal filled with extra “stuff” designed to make it look important. Streamline your proposals so they can be digested in five minutes or less, but be sure to include all the information your client may need. 2. Do a discovery call The key to a good proposal is information. You need to find out what your client is thinking, what their problems are (in depth), and sell them on how you will be able to fix those problems. Do a discovery call, and make sure you ask as many questions as you need to get a full understanding of what their problems are, their timelines, and your deliverables. 3. Streamline one-time job proposals One-time jobs are always a good source of income, but they don't need to eat up a lot of your time. Use apps and tools to help streamline proposals, but be clear to your client that they can always ask more questions. 4. Spend more time on bigger proposals or retainer work It's worth it to spend more time on proposals that involve more money, such as large projects or retainer work. Here are some things to keep in mind with these proposals. Give them a scope of work. Outline what their problem is and the solution you will implement to fix it. Be sure to explain your process and how it will solve the problem they're hiring you to fix. Give pricing options. Add options for your pricing. This will have a dual effect of allowing you to up-sell a bigger package (and make more money), and it will also put the client in a position of picking at least one of the options. Giving people options forces them to think about which option to chose, rather than a simple “yes” or “no”. 5. Iterate with your client Your ability to create custom proposals and do custom work is what will set you apart from other agencies. Let your clients know that they can always ask questions and work with you on your proposal, so that they are more inclined to sign the contract. “If you don't have a good foundation for your proposal, your proposal is not going to be the best, and it's not going to be one that they're going to want to jump up and down and say yes to.” Main Takeaways Streamline. Whether it's for one-time work or big projects, make sure that your clients can quickly digest what you're offering. Be thorough. Make sure you've done your research, made calls, and provided them with in-depth information if they need it. Iterate with your clients and make them feel heard. Work together to get your proposal, deliverables, and price to a place where you're both happy. Links Avani's Instagram

Chicago's favorite purveyors of bacchanalia, The Beer Nuts, are playing their final show on Halloween night this year. Before they call it a day, they jump in the Mazda to tell stories that can't be repeated at work or in uptight company. Seriously: NSFW, and not for delicate ears. We grabbed some amazing subs from the "very Chicago" Bari Italian Subs (1120 W Grand Ave #1, Chicago, IL 60642) and discussed: The Beer Nuts album "Can't Say No" couldn't be released in the present day. A horrible "Car Con Carne first" happens within minutes of recording. It was  horrific. It required opening the "fog roof." Beer Nuts history, starting with Joe getting kicked out of Ministry. The intense heat of Bari's hot giardiniera. The Beer Nuts pulled a "bait and switch" on Car Con Carne. Joe was given a list of things he couldn't say on the podcast. It wasn't honored. "Rock and roll should be dangerous" The Beer Nuts' record deal with Hollywood Records. It was a brief experience. Stripper stories. The worst nacho platter in the history of food. The band pre-gamed with Icehouse beer before the podcast. The beginning of what became the Double Door Halloween shows. That time Herb played poker with Jimmy Chamberlin... "Have you ever played sober?" Herb's on-stage "ghosting" where he was so drunk he just left the stage. The Beer Nuts' break up may actually save some lives. Show memories: Herb's choice comment at the Viper Room,  "Herb spilled a beer on a porn star at Motorhead." A horrible, horrible story about an adult accessory. Again, this episode is very NSFW. Too much conversation about Billy Squier. The hauntings of Liar's Club. The Local H video shoot in the Liar's Club basement. When the band thought we were done recording, they shared one final rock and roll story.

Just The Tips, with James P. Friel and Dean Holland

On today’s episode of Just the Tips, Dean comes through with the promise of something he teased in an earlier episode, which is a hugely successful marketing strategy that he’s implemented for his own business. In the last episode, Dean said he was working on the strategy that had been crushing it, but then he turned it into an episode of Zero Tips and wouldn’t tell us what it actually was. Well, today the wait is over, and we can now hear about what Dean has been up to and how he’s been killing it lately. Dean apparently has been getting death threats since the episode aired for not saying what the strategy was, so we’re here to clear both the air and Dean’s good name (what’s left of it). And as a bonus, you get the inside scoop on a killer approach to marketing. Know your customers, serve your customers Dean told me about how he has a number of lists from all of the different projects he’s done over the years, and of course the most valuable of those lists is the customer list, the one comprised of people who have purchased something from his business. So he surveyed those customers and one of the most common bits of feedback he received was that business owners have invested all they can, and they don’t have more money to put into another offer. And rather than just accept the answer that they didn’t have the money to spend, Dean thought about how his offers could actually help these people. So he followed up, sending another survey, to figure out where these people were stuck. This is pretty remarkable, the amount of attention Dean is giving to his customers knowing full well that there may be nothing in it for him, in the end. Identify the pain points Dean spent a week poring over the answers to the survey questions, and looking for commonalities, what pain points his customers shared. The end goal was to sell a coaching program that could help them bypass those pain points. But people don’t want to hear they’re being sold a coaching program when they’re hurting for cash, even if that program could help them. So all he said was, “I’ve read over your feedback, and I’m considering putting together something that could help you. If you think I should do that and you’d be interested in it, reply to this email.” And what’s fascinating is that when he emailed the list saying he was going to create this, he had more people respond to that email, than to his initial email. And that is how you know you’ve hit on something. This is a really fascinating case study on this week’s Just the Tips, that you have to hear. Be systematic about it Now that he knew he had something people wanted, Dean had to create the something. So what he offered them was a day-by-day plan, where they could actually watch him tackle their problems as if he were in their shoes. So for one hour a day, he would act as though he were in their position, and show them exactly what he would do to get over the hurdles. Now how he got the people to sign up is a stroke of brilliance that includes lowering the offer price, creating exclusivity, and building an offer that sells out in just a couple of hours. This is truly a clinic in how to get people to buy into what you’re selling, and it’s a great story that Dean shares on this week’s Just the Tips. Track your soldiers One of the most important lessons Dean shares on this week episode of just the tips is that the important thing in any marketing campaign or any sales how about selling that initial service for initial product. It's about building a long-term relationship with a customer. And so after that initial offering Dean emailed the 50 people who had signed up and said “I'm thinking of continuing this program now that it's over, would you be interested?” And 35 said they were. Now that is a return and it shows how Dean and really created something of value to his customers. This episode is no exception and you have to hear it, to hear how Dean pulled it off.
