☕️Buy me a coffee: https://www.everyonelovesguitar.com/support On this Jeff Schroeder interview, Jeff discusses his new album 'Metanoia' and his decision to leave the Smashing Pumpkins. The album is a departure from his previous work and represents a new era in his musical journey. Jeff reflects on the challenges of leaving a successful band and the process of redefining his identity as a musician, and as a person. He emphasizes the importance of letting go of ego attachments and embracing new opportunities, the importance of being present and enjoying life, the role of passion in your career, the significance of finding your own sound amidst the vast array of gear options available. Jeff shares his interest in mysticism and spirituality, how it has influenced his music and life, the attraction of different cultural philosophies and theologies, the appeal of ambient music, and the process of creating Jeff's new record. Jeff shares his experience of working with friends and the joy of creating something from start to finish, his extensive guitar collection and his approach to production. LOADS of cool stuff here! Jeff's most well-known as the guitarist for the Smashing Pumpkins. He initially took James Iha's place and was with the band from 2007 to his amicable departure in October 2023. He recorded five studio albums with the band and after bandleader Billy Corgan, and drummer Jimmy Chamberlin, Jeff was the third-longest-serving member of the group. Jeff's got a new album out, called Metanoia… and today we're going to talk about the new record, and find out why he left the Smashing Pumpkins. As a side note, Jeff's one of THE most intelligent guests I've had on the show - very bright guy who's incredibly well-read Photo by Vice Cooler

Siamese Dream Review by Greg Prato While Gish had placed the Smashing Pumpkins on the "most promising artist" list for many, troubles were threatening to break the band apart. Singer/guitarist/leader Billy Corgan was battling a severe case of writer's block and was in a deep state of depression brought on by a relationship in turmoil; drummer Jimmy Chamberlin was addicted to hard drugs; and bassist D'Arcy and guitarist James Iha severed their romantic relationship. The sessions for their sophomore effort, Siamese Dream, were wrought with friction -- Corgan eventually played almost all the instruments himself (except for percussion). Some say strife and tension produces the best music, and it certainly helped make Siamese Dream one of the finest alt-rock albums of all time. Instead of following Nirvana's punk rock route, Siamese Dream went in the opposite direction -- guitar solos galore, layered walls of sound courtesy of the album's producers (Butch Vig and Corgan), extended compositions that bordered on prog rock, plus often reflective and heartfelt lyrics. The four tracks that were selected as singles became alternative radio standards -- the anthems "Cherub Rock," "Today," and "Rocket," plus the symphonic ballad "Disarm" -- but as a whole, Siamese Dream proved to be an incredibly consistent album. Such compositions as the red-hot rockers "Quiet" and "Geek U.S.A." were standouts, as were the epics "Hummer," "Soma," and "Silverfuck," plus the soothing sounds of "Mayonaise," "Spaceboy," and "Luna." After the difficult recording sessions, Corgan stated publicly that if Siamese Dream didn't achieve breakthrough success, he would end the band. He didn't have to worry for long -- the album debuted in the Billboard Top Ten and sold more than four million copies in three years. Siamese Dream stands alongside Nevermind and Superunknown as one of the decade's finest (and most influential) rock albums. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/comics-in-motion-podcast/message

Big Fat Five: A Podcast Financially Supported by Big Fat Snare Drum
This week's guest is THE Jimmy Chamberlin. He is a singular player that blends jazz/rock/prog and I was SO curious as to what his top 5 would be; and he did not disappoint. He is, of course, most known for his time with Smashing Pumpkins, but he's also formed his own group, Jimmy Chamberlin Complex, in addition to a supergroup with Pumpkins lead singer Billy Corgan called Zwan. He's performed and recorded with Skysaw, Frank Catalano, and many more…and so…without further ado, I hope you enjoy the five records that helped shape Jimmy Chamberlin into the drummer he is today. In 2018, it was announced that James Iha and Jimmy Chamberlin would rejoin The Smashing Pumpkins. A tour and new music (produced by Rick Rubin), were announced to celebrate the reunion. Those Rick Rubin sessions were originally conceived as 2 EPs, but over time it became an album (or not according to Billy?). The result was Shiny and Oh So Bright - Vol. 1 / LP: No Past. No Future. No Sun. Joining Frank to discuss SAOSBV1LPNPNFNS is fellow Pumpkinhead Evangelina Sanchez! Evangelina and Frank discuss the feeling of being all "alone - together" as Pumpkins fans, how Shiny fits into the ATUM storyline, being a creative trying to rise above your mammoth past, a wishlist of Shiny songs to hear live, modern production pros and cons and Solara speaking to why we gravitate towards the Pumpkins. While some fans heralded the return, others were dismissive. It's an album that has a complicated history with fans, critics...and possibly the band? But much like Monuments To An Elegy, there's a lot here to still dig into and enjoy. Will the "Woahwoahwoahwoahwoahwhoah" crowd rise?! Become the owl at midnight! How to support the 'kast: NEW ! In 2017, the wheels were in motion for Jimmy Chamberlin's return to the Smashing Pumpkins. But before his triumphant return to the Pumpkins, he returned with his other band, the "Jimmy Chamberlin Complex" and released his 2nd JCC album titled "The Parable". A jazz/fusion itch Jimmy gets to scratch outside of the Pumpkins. Joining Frank as guest co-host (returning from the SKYSAW episode) is Patreon member Joe! We talk about the more jazz/fusion angle "The Parable" takes as opposed to the jazz/alternative rock feel of SKYSAW and "Life Begins Again", Sarsten Noice's art for the album and how it associates with its themes (and with Jimmy) and we heap tons of praises, as always, for Jimmy's incredible skills. In 2008 Jimmy Chamberlin decided to walk away from the Pumpkins in order to focus on family and other projects. One of those projects was the short-lived Skysaw (originally named "This"). In 2011 Skysaw released its first and only full-length album "Great Civilizations", which mixes prog, alternative and a little country and jazz? Joining Frank to discuss this album is guest co-host and Pumpkast Patreon member "Joe".
We've veered off into solo project territory again today with the Jimmy Chamberlin Complex and their 2005 alterna-jazz-rock-fusion album, "Life Begins Again." More Fugazi than Dave Brubeck, more Slint grooves than brass sections, it was a "jazz" album we weren't ready for at the time but (as full-grown GENRE-DEFYING adults) we really f**king dig now. First off: Jimmy's cookin' it up so fast, flippin' sonic flapjacks in flavors we hadn't quite tasted before giving this album a proper listen. We heap praise on the incredible vocal stylings of Catherine Wheel's Rob Dickinson... but Frank's got murder on the mind when thinking of a Catherine Wheel/Smashing Pumpkins bill. All that plus the "Set the Ray to Jerry"-esque dreaminess of the Billy Corgan-sung "Loki Cat," the unfortunate feeling of a song becoming a late-night stress loop, and the benefits of having a Righteous Brother as a godfather. But what we really want to know is: If Jimmy-baby's laying organ tracks on this bad boy... where was Ignoffo's invite?! When the Smashing Pumpkins broke up in 2000, the talented, tortured genius of Billy Corgan was on display again in Zwan, a band with the Pumpkins' monster drummer Jimmy Chamberlin, future Pixies bassist/vocalist Paz Lenchantin, and dual guitarist Matt Sweeney and David Pajo. It's a pity it didn't work out. This is an edited version. The version on Spotify and Anchor has more music. Links for this episode are at mostlymodernmedia.com

Welcome to the latest episode of Retrosonic Podcast "Music From The Edge of the Universe: The 5 Billion In Diamonds Story". We welcome founder members, the legendary producer and drummer with Garbage Butch Vig, Bristol UK producer Andy Jenks and UK DJ James Grillo to hear the definitive and fascinating story on how this star-studded Transatlantic project came to fruition. The band's second LP "Divine Accidents" (Make Records) was our Album of The Year 2020 and it's another imaginary soundtrack to another imaginary film - a dazzling sonic and cinematic mix of Psych Rock and Folk sounds. It features the same stellar cast of collaborators including singers Ebbot Lundberg of The Soundtrack of Our Lives, David Schelzel of The Ocean Blue, Damian O'Neill of The Undertones, Sandra Dedrick of The Free Design, singer Helen White and musicians including the Bristol Wrecking Crew of Alex Lee, Sean Cook and Damon Reece on guitars, bass and drums. The album also features new sublime contributions from James Bagshaw of British psych rockers Temples and gorgeous vocals from Martin Barnard from Jenk’s '90's combo Alpha. In this thoroughly entertaining journey through 5 Billion In Diamonds musical universe, Butch, Andy and James play and talk us through some of the many and varied influences on the 5BiD sound including John Barry, Ramases, John Carpenter, Jimmie Spheeris, The BBC Radiophonic Workshop, Michel Legrand, Linda Perhacs, Faust, Jeff Bridges and Richard Rodney Bennett. There's also a pick of their own music from both albums including the forthcoming single and a special sneak preview of the as yet unreleased vinyl-only bonus track featuring Jimmy Chamberlin from The Smashing Pumpkins. There's a comprehensive introduction to all of the 5BiD special guest musicians and vocalists and a Butch Vig edited medley of examples of their music. If all that is not enough, James tells us who is next on his special guest wish list, Andy plays a track from his new project Ree-Vo and Butch gives us an update on the new Garbage album. We even find out how TV presenter, naturalist and conservationist Chris Packham is involved with 5 Billion In Diamonds. So, sit back, relax and enjoy this very special episode, packed full of music from the edge of the universe. Please check out the feature at Retro Man Blog at the link below for further information, links, video to their current single and exclusive Paul Slattery photographs. https://retroman65.blogspot.com/2021/02/music-from-edge-of-universe-5-billion.html
In September, The Jimmy Chamberlin Complex returned for Honor. The group’s third album found it returning to its core to deliver the manner of improvisational jazz that it sets it apart from most of the drummer’s work. A lifelong musician, Chamberlin is undoubtedly best known as the drummer of alternative rock mainstays The Smashing Pumpkins and fellow Billy Corgan-fronted group, Zwan. But while he’s frequently regarded as among the best rock drummers, he’s had a fairly fascinating career one the other side of the career, serving as the CEO of music tech company, LiveOne Inc.

After teasing with singles “Cyr” and “The Colour of Love”, The Smashing Pumpkins are finally ready to unleash their 11th studio album, Cyr, on the world. The 20 track, double album by alternative rock royalty will be out on November 27, and drummer Jimmy Chamberlin sat down with HEAVY during the week to discuss the album and many other surprises. We started by asking him if he still feels nerves after 30 plus years in the music industry."Yeah, I don't,” he laughed. "I wish I did! I'm excited, just not nervous. I think at this point... releasing the singles before the album really gives you... it's like peeking in at the birthday party so you kind of know there's a birthday party, if you know what I mean. We're excited about the response to the records and the response to the singles thus far so we're happy to lay it all out there and see what people think of the rest of the record. This is probably the best we've felt about a release since... I don't even know when... since Machina. We haven’t really had this kind of warm, fuzzy vibe. We're used to being like punished little children when we release music."In the full interview Jimmy talks about life inside one of the worlds biggest bands, their idea of a touring rock opera style concert, memories of three decades in the band, some of the band's music videos and stories behind them, juggling family and music, the ups and downs of being in The Smashing Pumpkins, his animal collection and more.

Humbleness. If there's an example on how a musician handles that element of character, that is Jimmy Chamberlin. One of the more prominent and influential drummers of our time comes onto IUF as he talks about his growth personally, morally, and musically throughout his career. Whether it is playing in bands like Smashing Pumpkins, Jimmy Chamberlin Complex, or Skysaw – One thing has been a constant medium for him, that is the love he has for being a drummer and playing music. As we talk about the newest Complex record, he reminiscences about the timeline when this album was actually completed – which dates two years back. It wasn't until now that the newest album comes out but it was also about getting the music out there for the listeners to grasp onto during a time of uncertainty. From the music life, to his personal life, and within all the experience he has taken in – The dedication Jimmy has to his craft will always be there. As he puts it: “The same way you honor yourself, you have to honor your instrument.” Listen in now and make sure to pick up/purchase the new Jimmy Chamberlin Complex album “Honor” out now on Make Records.
Chicago based bassist/composer and bandleader, Matt Ulery, has developed an instantly recognizable sound. Known for his sweeping lyricism, unconventional phrase structures, expressionistic emotionalism, Ulery’s music, from small, diverse chamber ensembles to full orchestras, is informed by the entire spectrum of jazz, classical, rock, pop, and folk– specifically American, South American, Balkan, and other European folkstyles. He has been performing for 23 years on upright, electric, and brass basses. For a decade, Ulery has been the leader of his own groups and frequent collaborator. Ulery has produced and released 8 albums of all original music under his name including three recent releases of critical acclaim, “By a Little Light,” “Wake an Echo,” and “In the Ivory,” on Dave Douglas’s Greenleaf Music record label in 2012-2014 and his latest, “Festival (2016),” and “Sifting Stars (2018)” on his own label, Woolgathering Records. Ulery earned a Master of Music degree at Depaul University and Bachelors degree in music composition at The Chicago College of Performing Arts at Roosevelt University and has played in bands with Kurt Rosenwinkel, Fareed Haque, Howard Levy, Patricia Barber, Goran Ivanovic, Greg Ward, Jeff Parker, Zach Brock, Jimmy Chamberlin, Makaya McCraven, Marquis Hill and countless others. HUM drummer Bryan St. Pere talks about their new record Inlet that was 22 years in the making and the timing of releasing it during a pandemic/social unrest, touring as a young mans sport, the trippy experience of watching HUM play live with Jason Gerken on drums, why he doesn’t play to click tracks, his love for his Jenkins Martin Kit, Bonham, Peart & Copeland as influences, the challenges of maintaining interest in the instrument, bands like The Poster Children & more from the Champaigne, IL local scene, watching Jimmy Chamberlin live in 91’ and trying to play his kit, reflecting upon early “sparsely attended” shows, a reoccurring drum-dream, signing with RCA and the varying processes’ of recording You’d Prefer an Astronaut & Downward is Heavenward & much more! https://humband.bandcamp.com/releases
Episode 6 continues our NCAA Tournament styled brackets to determine the greatest rock music artist of all time. This episode covers second round match ups from the '80s and '90s. '80s match ups for this episode: (1) U2 vs. (8) Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers (2) R.E.M. vs. (7) AC/DC (5) Metallica vs. (13) Iron Maiden (6) Genesis vs. (14) Rush '90s match ups for this episode: (1) Nirvana vs. (9) Smashing Pumpkins (2) Radiohead vs. (7) Alice In Chains (3) Pearl Jam vs. (6) Wilco (4) Soundgarden vs. (5) Oasis Notes for this episode: Scott will amend calling U2's “Boy” “great” to “very good” instead. “War” was indeed the first truly great U2 album. Also, you couldn't ignore 2014's Songs Of Innocence either but that was mostly due to the iTunes fiasco. Metallica's initial 10 year run is as good a run as any band has had - in heavy metal (the last part got cut off) Matt meant to say that Iron Maiden and Metallica were NOT party bands, unlike KISS Scott meant to single out the Soundgarden song “Loud Love” which is on the album “Louder Than Love” (also home of the excellent “Hands All Over”) The Smashing Pumpkins' drummer Jimmy Chamberlin was kicked out of the band for Adore, but he did return for the Machina albums. Wilco covered “Bob Dylans 115th Dream” (title was incorrectly stated)
John and his close friend, drummer Jimmy Chamberlin -- one of the founding members of The Smashing Pumpkins -- discuss how the coronavirus has affected the music industry, how it compares to other shakeups over the decades, and what may happen next.
Drummer Andrew Gottlieb of Brooklyn’s own Husbandry & Haan talks about Husbandry’s new record “A Port in a Storm”, the process of recording it with fellow NY band Moontooth at Westfall studios, tempo mapping, focusing on the many variables of self releasing a record and prioritizing them, the magical connections that ensue from craigslist ads (and some bad ones), the evolution of portable listening devices from cassette walkman's to cd walkman's, to iPods, to phones, keeping the fun in studying and in practicing, driving/touring cross country, his first kit and driving his sister crazy with his band rehearsals, Jimmy Chamberlin and Abe Cunningham as influences, as well as 2020 plans and work with his second band Haan! https://husbandryny.bandcamp.com/ https://www.facebook.com/husbandrynyc https://twitter.com/husbandrynyc https://www.instagram.com/husbandrynyc https://open.spotify.com/artist/5VyBolme1vq3dNDoF9MVIH

Rob and Seth first rejoice over the announcement of the new partnership between Osiris Podcasts and JamBase, and Rob elaborates on why he believes this is the ideal relationship for this podcast and for others on the Osiris Network. Then the listener is again taken to backstage at The Tabernacle for two interviews conducted during the Umphrey's McGee 2019 New Years' run. Drummer Kris Myers talks about his transition from being an enthusiast of grunge music to studying jazz and cutting his teeth in the "hot seat" of playing in "pro level" big bands. Kris explains how "one of the weirdest people I know" Brian Abraham is a bit of an "unsung hero" in Umphrey's circles. On the eve of his 16th Anniversary with the band, Kris talks about how his predecessor Mike Mirro helped him find his musical place in Umphrey's McGee, how "Plunger" and "Believe The Lie" were among the first Umphrey's songs he helped to shape and how his playing in the band has evolved over the years. We also learn about the "Hide The One" jam, how he used orchestral percussion to achieve a "thick, pulsating tone" on the band's recent studio release and Myers takes us into his thinking process behind one particular drum solo he played during this run (and we get to hear it). He also details his experiences with other musicians, including Jimmy Chamberlin of Smashing Pumpkins, Zappa alum Mike Keneally and the legendary Adrian Belew. Then Aaron "Louie" Meyette represents the midwest well as he walks us through his unusual career path to becoming a full-time Umphrey's Mcgee employee. Louie went from working with the "Midwest Peeps," to USTORM, to doing Umphrey's merchandise to becoming the Lighting Crew Chief. His Umphstory should inspire others who aspire. Jimmy Chamberlin has had no shortage of success behind the drumkit as the founding and longtime drummer of Smashing Pumkins. Accolades aside, what’s been even more impressive to witness is the evolution he has gone through throughout his career. I'm joined this week by Matt Walker, one of modern rock's most celebrated and accomplished drummers (Morrissey, Smashing Pumpkins, Filter, Cupcakes, Garbage, and more). Go see Matt kick ass behind the drum kit with Sons of the Silent Age at Metro on 1/12/19! We met for vegetarian food from the fantastic Chicago Diner (3411 N. Halsted), a true Chicago institution ("Meat-free since '83!"). Chicago Diner is a great entry point for people curious about vegetarian and vegan food... and for the already-converted. Chicago Diner's "Soul Bowl" is fantastic. Matt had the Trio Burger Sliders (Buddha's Karma Burger, Cajun Black Bean Black Bean Burger, and Titanic BLT). The orange drinks we ordered that we loved (and I couldn't remember the name of) were SPICED ORANGE: House-made orange syrup infused with vanilla, cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, and pumpkin pie spice Sons of the Silent Age: The phenomenal Bowie tribute band Matt's a part of, along with other A-list musicians including vocalist Chris Connelly. Sons of the Silent Age plays a benefit at Metro on Saturday 1/12/19. The Facebook Live recording is merely an amuse-bouche. Chris Connelly didn't need to rehearse the "SHUT UP" part of Bowie's "It's No Game." When Matt was asked to audition for... and join... Smashing Pumpkins, right out of the Filter "Short Bus" tour. The Pumpkins' matinee show at Metro. I was there and helped Tim Meadows from SNL get into the show. The nickname James Iha gave Matt Walker that just stuck. What are the drumming differences between Matt and Jimmy Chamberlin? Matt's time with Filter and current relationship with the members of the band. The Chicago scene as Matt was coming up: "I loved that time... I played in a lot of different bands." Leaving the Pumpkins to go all-in with Cupcakes. There's a Cupcakes reunion brewing... Is it a better environment for an up-and-coming artist these days? The times Matt filled in for Butch Vig with Garbage (including "Bleed Like Me"). The dark cloud that follows Matt Walker from A-list band to A-list band. If Matt weren't in a Bowie tribute band, he'd be in an Adam Ant tribute. Wind up the jukebox! "Everyone loves Matt Walker." Car Con Carne is presented by The Autobarn Mazda of Evanston.
It’s been more than 18 years since the Smashing Pumpkins recorded an album with original members Jimmy Chamberlin and James Iha. So what do Matt Gamba and Zach Shaw think of Billy Corgan and co.’s new album?
Vært: Augusta Glahn-Abrahamsen *This episode of Heartland Podcast is in Danish*

Chicago's favorite purveyors of bacchanalia, The Beer Nuts, are playing their final show on Halloween night this year. Before they call it a day, they jump in the Mazda to tell stories that can't be repeated at work or in uptight company. Seriously: NSFW, and not for delicate ears. We grabbed some amazing subs from the "very Chicago" Bari Italian Subs (1120 W Grand Ave #1, Chicago, IL 60642) and discussed: The Beer Nuts album "Can't Say No" couldn't be released in the present day. A horrible "Car Con Carne first" happens within minutes of recording. It was horrific. It required opening the "fog roof." Beer Nuts history, starting with Joe getting kicked out of Ministry. The intense heat of Bari's hot giardiniera. The Beer Nuts pulled a "bait and switch" on Car Con Carne. Joe was given a list of things he couldn't say on the podcast. It wasn't honored. "Rock and roll should be dangerous" The Beer Nuts' record deal with Hollywood Records. It was a brief experience. Stripper stories. The worst nacho platter in the history of food. The band pre-gamed with Icehouse beer before the podcast. The beginning of what became the Double Door Halloween shows. That time Herb played poker with Jimmy Chamberlin... "Have you ever played sober?" Herb's on-stage "ghosting" where he was so drunk he just left the stage. The Beer Nuts' break up may actually save some lives. Show memories: Herb's choice comment at the Viper Room, "Herb spilled a beer on a porn star at Motorhead." A horrible, horrible story about an adult accessory. Again, this episode is very NSFW. Too much conversation about Billy Squier. The hauntings of Liar's Club. The Local H video shoot in the Liar's Club basement. When the band thought we were done recording, they shared one final rock and roll story.
