Send us a textChange doesn't wait for the perfect schedule, and neither do big feelings. We sit down after a long day to unpack a week where a 30-minute hydrotherapy session brought relief, the weather kept us indoors, and Oakland leaned hard into the comfort of screens and familiar routines. Rather than fight it, we explore why control, predictability, and co-regulation can be smart strategies when a child's world is filled with packed boxes and looming travel plans. We get personal about the daily school run for Lacey and the meltdowns that come with transitions: the countdowns that sometimes help, the moments that don't, and the practical safety steps that keep everyone secure. Paige breaks down why static visuals and tabletop tasks trigger Oakland, offering a different lens for therapists and educators—lighten language, reduce direct demands, and protect autonomy wherever you can. We also talk about weekends, nature, and why water usually eases his nervous system, while staying honest about the days it doesn't.Amid family recalibration, Paige reveals The Inclusion Collective—an accessible, privately funded membership for carers seeking practical training and genuine connection. Expect live group education on NDIS reviews and school systems, clarity connection calls for questions and body doubling, masterclasses from diverse voices, and an active chat that doesn't expect perfection. It's built to meet real carers where they are and make support feel possible.https://inclusiveoak.com.au/ danabaltutis.com, mytherapyhouse.com.au, https://mytherapyhouse.com.au/your-childs-therapy-journey/ https://www.danabaltutis.com/services

Send us a textEver watched a child light up at the zoo, then shut down at the hospital and wondered how to bridge those worlds with care, dignity, and actual access? We dive into a week that held both: a quiet bus at Monarto where curiosity bloomed, and a clinical setting where pushing past tolerance backfired. Along the way, we unpack the practical tools that make community life possible for neurodivergent kids, from hydrotherapy wins to the much-debated disability stroller that functions as a lifeline. We share how unschooling shows up in real time: learning differences between apes and monkeys on the move, noticing the iPad as a regulator rather than a villain, and prepping for transitions when the water slides are closed but the pool is still calling. At home, we're packing up to rent the house and planning a lap around Australia: tag-teaming weekends, leveraging ADHD hyperfocus, and keeping eyes on a future with more freedom and family time. Our daughter's school fatigue gets a humane reset with later starts, backed by a supportive teacher and simple, clear communication. The heart of the conversation is nervous system literacy. One parent often becomes the safe base, the other the action signal. Naming these roles reduces blame and power struggles, and it guides who should lead what-especially during transitions. We also pull back the curtain on NDIS knockbacks that label strollers as “restrictive practice,” how we used a Variety grant to fund a purpose-built disability stroller, and what to do when the first device can't withstand meltdowns or strength. Think durable gear, sensory shielding, and realistic logistics that keep outings possible.Medical trauma needs careful handling. We share scripts that protect capacity- sending videos ahead, setting no-engagement boundaries, and calling time when a clinician pushes a child past their limit. The result isn't perfect compliance; it's sustainable care and trust for the next visit. If you're navigating similar terrain-unschooling, access, advocacy, and family alignment-you'll find strategies you can use today. If the conversation resonates, follow the show, share it with a friend who needs the validation, and leave a review so more families can find these tools. danabaltutis.com, mytherapyhouse.com.au, https://mytherapyhouse.com.au/your-childs-therapy-journey/ https://www.danabaltutis.com/services

Send us a textThe rainbow stretches across the sky – vibrant, diverse, and complete only because each colour exists. This powerful metaphor frames our season finale on neurodiversity, reminding us that human brains, like rainbows, aren't meant to be identical. Each carries unique colours, patterns, and brilliance that contribute to the whole.Throughout this season, we've explored what truly neuroaffirming spaces look like – environments that don't merely tolerate neurological differences but actively celebrate them. These spaces recognize that every form of sensory communication and emotional expression is valid, meeting needs with respect rather than correction. Most importantly, they create that irreplaceable feeling of belonging – being valued, trusted, and celebrated exactly as you are.Parents, here's something especially for you: your brain belongs in the rainbow too. When you recognize and honor your own neurological wiring, you connect with yourself more deeply and model self-acceptance for your children. This understanding becomes the bridge to authentic relationships. What colors make up your brain? What lights you up? What overwhelms you? What strengths have carried you through? This season has shown us that supporting neurodivergent children isn't about fixing perceived deficits but recognizing the brilliance already present and creating environments where that brilliance can flourish. As you move forward, remember that creating neuroaffirming spaces happens through simple daily choices – a parent pausing before speaking, a therapist following a child's lead, a teacher adjusting the environment. Every time you choose acceptance and celebration over correction, you reshape the world around you. Thank you for joining us on this journey. Send us a textWhat if a camera could say what your voice can't? We sit down with Bianca, a neurodivergent artist and mother living with bipolar II, ADHD, and autistic traits, to explore how art, therapy, and the right clinical support helped her turn pain into purpose. From a turbulent childhood in post-communist Romania to a leap-of-faith move to Adelaide during the pandemic, her story threads vulnerability with resolve, and invites us to rethink what recovery and advocacy can look like.We trace her late diagnosis journey—sparked by her child's assessment—and the mix of shock and relief that followed a bipolar II diagnosis. Bianca breaks down the real work of finding effective medication, why a psychiatrist's expertise matters for complex mood disorders, and how weekly therapy functions like emotional hygiene. She shares the gritty middle: when ADHD meds tangle with mood stability, when the wrong clinician sets progress back, and how to keep going until you're truly seen.Parenting deepened everything. Bianca talks candidly about postpartum depression, the fear of passing on trauma, and the craft of repair—slowing down, choosing different words, making room for both joy and overwhelm. Her photography practice became a lifeline: mindful “find red” walks to regulate attention, self-portraits on the days words failed, and exhibitions that turned private suffering into communal understanding. Her widely shared projects—on postpartum mental health and Hear Me Say This—use portraits and lived testimony to dismantle stigma around bipolar, autism, ADHD, and disability. If you care about mental health, neurodiversity, creative practice, or simply want a grounded conversation about how people actually heal, this one's for you. Send us a textA five-minute visit can hold a whole season of hope. I sat down with Paige Carter of Inclusive Oak to trace the delicate return of motivation after school burnout, and name a stage many families live inside: curiosity without capacity. Oakland asked to see his friends, stepped into the classroom, then stepped back out, overwhelmed but determined enough to hug classmates in the hallway. We call that progress, and we talk about how changing our expectations changes a child's nervous system. We also untangle language that matters in practice. De-schooling is the rest-and-repair bridge between school and any home education model; unschooling is the child-led learning that may follow. Paige shares how releasing academic demands helped her son regulate, then rediscover interest through technology. From iPad downtime to active PlayStation sessions and YouTube walk-throughs, we explore how authentic learning shows up when a child truly cares about the goal: decoding letters to search, transferring steps into gameplay, and building confidence one solved problem at a time.Parallel to this home shift runs a major advocacy effort. Paige takes us inside her months-long push to address the “grey area” in education, children who don't qualify for special education but can't access mainstream classrooms safely or consistently. After building a campaign, gathering expert input, and meeting the Premier, she shares the emotional toll and why deep rest afterward wasn't indulgence but maintenance. Looking ahead, the family is packing up their home to travel Australia for a year. The kids get choice over what to keep and how to set up their bunks, and a purpose-built stroller remains a crucial support for safety and regulation in public spaces. If this story resonates, whether you're navigating de-schooling, advocating for grey-area learners, or rethinking what “success” looks like - come along. Send us a textWhat happens when a clinical psychologist with ADHD parents two neurodivergent children? A uniquely insightful perspective on navigating family life with different brains. Dr. Claire Milligan opens up about her journey from struggling parent to practice director of Maple Leaf Psychology and Allied Health, sharing the moment when everything changed - when her pediatrician asked, "Which one of you has ADHD?"That question sparked what Claire calls her "kaleidoscope moment" - suddenly her entire life made sense through an ADHD lens. With refreshing honesty, Claire shares both professional wisdom and personal struggles, including a meltdown that happened just hours before our conversation. Her vulnerability reinforces what many parents need to hear: perfection isn't possible, but repair always is.Claire explains the crucial differences between tantrums and meltdowns, offering practical strategies for each. She introduces Internal Family Systems therapy, which views our personalities as different "parts" working together like a symphony when well-coordinated. This approach helps parents develop compassion for themselves, especially after difficult moments. For daily life management, Claire recommends specific tools like Family Wall app for shared calendars and AnyList app for grocery shopping. Her family motto - "If it's not in Family Wall, it isn't happening" - reduces the cognitive load for ADHD brains. She emphasizes the importance of working with your brain's needs rather than against them, whether that means wearing earplugs during sensory overwhelm or giving extra warnings about schedule changes. The greatest hope for neurodivergent families? Seeing children develop self-awareness about their needs, like when Claire's son recently said, "I need more warning." By embracing our unique brain wiring and teaching our children to do the same, we create families where differences aren't just accommodated - they're celebrated. Send us a textWhat if the bravest thing you could do for your child's education was to stop pushing and start listening to their nervous system? That's the pivot Paige Carter makes as she chooses unschooling to help her autistic son, Oaklan, recover from severe burnout - replacing schedules and demands with safety, curiosity, and radical patience. We dig into what autistic burnout really looks like at home: fragile tolerance, lost interests, and a body that reads every expectation as a threat. Paige traces the turning point from a small, supportive classroom to a mid-year intake that tipped the balance - more peers, more noise, more unpredictability - and why a quieter, specialist-informed environment makes all the difference. Along the way, “screen time” gets reframed as a lifeline. Minecraft, Star Wars, and deep-dives into animal facts become low-demand gateways to confidence, language, problem-solving, and calm. The difference between homeschooling and unschooling comes into focus too: one submits a curriculum; the other follows the child's capacity, catching learning in the cracks of real life.Paige also opens up about medication: risperidone's early wins, hard side effects, and the search for alternatives amid epilepsy management, MRI results, and halted assessments. Through it all, her daily non-negotiables- five pages of reading, ten minutes of journaling, mantras, a healthy lunch, and brief breathwork or a walk- model how carers stay grounded when days swing from peaceful to stormy in minutes. And there's advocacy in motion: a meeting with South Australia's Premier to press for small classes, trained staff, stable cohorts and policies that recognise autistic burnout as a genuine health event, not a behaviour problem. If you've ever wondered whether healing can come before homework - and still lead to real learning - this story offers a map and a measure of hope. Send us a textWhat happens when we reframe neurodivergence not as a deficit, but as a natural variation in brain architecture? Sarah Eagle, founder of Joy Diving Australia and late-diagnosed autistic woman with ADHD, offers a refreshing perspective that celebrates brain differences rather than pathologizing them. After losing her brother Ben during a psychotic episode in 2001, Sarah channelled her grief into walking 600 kilometres along Western Australia's Bibbulum Track to raise awareness for mental health. Years later, following her own neurodivergent diagnosis, she created Joy Diving Australia—a name inspired by both her love of scuba diving and her mission to help others discover what brings their unique brains joy.Sarah speaks candidly about the shame many late-diagnosed adults carry after years of being told they need to be "normal." Through her work, she helps clients develop what she calls "sensory lifestyle medicine"—practical adjustments to their environment that support nervous system regulation. For families, she introduces polyvagal theory as a framework to understand behaviours as communications of the nervous system, fostering non-blaming language around regulation and dysregulation. The conversation explores how workplaces can better accommodate neurodivergent employees, with Sarah highlighting the importance of environmental adjustments and the new psychosocial legislation that can support these changes. She's developing resources to help neurodivergent individuals navigate workplace accommodations and financial challenges, recognising that many late-diagnosed people face significant economic disadvantages.Perhaps most touching is Sarah's ability to approach her own neurodivergent experiences with curiosity and compassion rather than shame. She shares a story about mistaking an optical illusion for a glass door—a perceptual "glitch" that she views not as a deficit but as a fascinating insight into how her brain works.Listen to discover how understanding and embracing your unique brain type can transform your experience of life, reduce shame, and open doorways to joy you never thought possible. Send us a textWhat happens when cultural identity meets neurodiversity? Psychologist Anushka Phal knows this intersection intimately as a Fijian Indian, born in New Zealand and raised in Australia, who received her own ADHD diagnosis as an adult. This revelation sparked both personal healing and a passionate mission to create mental health spaces where multicultural, neurodivergent individuals truly belong."When I got diagnosed, I looked back at life and realized there was an explanation for all the things impacting my self-worth," Anushka shares. "It's like watching a thriller movie for the second time – suddenly all the clues make sense." This newfound self-compassion transformed not just her life but her approach to therapy at Unmeed Psychology, the culturally responsive practice she founded in Melbourne. The conversation explores fascinating questions many clients bring to therapy: "How much of this is my ADHD and how much is just being Asian?" Anushka unpacks how certain traits might be celebrated in some cultures while pathologized in others. Cultural context profoundly impacts how neurodivergence presents – she notes that in Fiji, her ADHD symptoms feel less problematic than in Melbourne's fast-paced environment.Beyond clinical work, Anushka has created vibrant community spaces where people with intersectional identities can connect authentically. From South Asian queer gatherings to women's circles, these "third spaces" address the disappearance of natural community connections. "When you come from a collectivistic background, having your community makes such a difference to mental health," she explains. For parents, therapists, and neurodivergent individuals, Anushka offers practical wisdom: strategic whiteboards for capturing thoughts, collection baskets throughout the house, and a profound mindset shift for preventing burnout – "Every time I say yes to something, I'm saying no to something else." Her "spider web thinking" demonstrates how neurodivergent traits can become superpowers when embraced with compassion and understanding.Listen in for a conversation that might forever change how you view the beautiful intersection of culture, neurodiversity, and the healing power of belonging. With refreshing honesty, she describes this journey not as a burden but as "magic" that transformed her understanding of neurodiversity."Neurodivergent people, the way their brains operate, is just incredible," Paige explains, bringing a perspective that celebrates different ways of thinking rather than pathologizing them. As founder of Inclusive Oak, she's created the support system she desperately needed as a new autism parent- a blend of education, community, and connections she calls "the recipe for success."For parents feeling isolated or overwhelmed, Paige offers practical wisdom: find your tribe, even if that starts online; advocate confidently knowing you're the expert on your child; and recognize when you need rest without self-judgment. She offers a refreshing cosmic metaphor—neurodiversity as the universe with each diagnosis representing a planet—emphasizing that every neurological variation has value and purpose within the whole. The conversation dives deep into practical approaches for supporting neurodivergent individuals, particularly the power of acceptance from parents. "If the parents don't have it, it's really hard for the child to have it," Joanne explains, highlighting how mixed messages create confusion and anxiety. She distinguishes between avoiding labels versus embracing accommodations, showing how families can develop their own language around neurodivergence without shame or secrecy.Perhaps most valuable is Joanne's candid advice against seeking a single guru with all the answers. "One theory doesn't have all the answers," she emphasizes, encouraging parents to understand their own values before selecting from diverse perspectives. Her signature blend of professional knowledge and lived experience allows her to "connect the dots" between abstract research and practical strategies families can actually use. With humor and compassion, Joanne reminds us of the ultimate freedom in self-acceptance: "You're not dead. This revelation transformed not only her understanding of her family but sparked the creation of Mingle Co – an organisation dedicated to building genuine connection for neurodivergent people. After 21 years working across the disability sector, Vee noticed a critical gap: many neurodivergent individuals desperately wanted meaningful connections but found traditional social spaces overwhelming and alienating. Drawing from her own experiences of feeling "complicated" and "quirky," she designed events where sensory needs are anticipated, fidgets are welcomed, and deep conversations replace uncomfortable small talk. The result? Spaces where people can truly be themselves – sometimes for the first time in their lives.Vee's approach to parenting her neurodivergent children offers powerful insights for families. When her daughter was diagnosed with ADHD at 18, V reflected on the words she'd spoken years earlier: "I love how you see the world. Don't change for anyone." These simple words had profoundly impacted her daughter who had always felt "out of place." Similarly, understanding her four-year-old son's PDA (Pathological Demand Avoidance) transformed daily challenges by respecting his need for autonomy.Perhaps most inspiring is Vee's vision for the future – a world where inclusivity isn't an afterthought but fundamentally woven into our schools, workplaces, and social spaces. Send us a textWhat if challenging behaviours aren't problems to fix, but signals showing us how a child's brain works? Dr Vanessa Spiller, clinical psychologist and FASD expert, revolutionises our understanding of neurodivergent children through her groundbreaking "Mind the Gaps" model.Drawing from both professional expertise and lived experience as a foster carer, Dr Spiller explains that neurodiversity simply means brain-based differences - everyone has strengths and weaknesses. The real challenge often lies in the gap between what children are asked to do and the abilities they actually possess. Her approach visualises these abilities as a wheel - for neurodivergent children, this wheel resembles something from the Flintstones: jagged, bumpy, and making progress difficult without proper support.Dr Spiller shares powerful insights about executive functioning - the mental flexibility, impulse control, and ability to link cause and effect that many neurodivergent children struggle with. Rather than forcing children into environments that don't fit their brains, she advocates for finding windows into learning through special interests. "If a child loves trains," she explains, "using Thomas the Tank Engine scenarios to teach cause and effect will be far more effective than abstract examples."Her most heartfelt message speaks directly to parents: "You are the greatest resource your child has." Not the speech therapist, not the psychologist, but you. This shifts the focus from parents feeling they need to be the perfect solution to recognising themselves as an ongoing, evolving resource - experimenting, learning, and modelling the very flexibility we hope to teach our children.Whether you're a parent, educator, or therapist, this conversation will transform how you understand and support neurodivergent children. We've tackled practical strategies like environmental setup, co-regulation techniques, and building connection in everyday moments. Send us a textWhat if Mother's Day was never supposed to be about flowers and gifts at all? This special episode reveals the forgotten origins of Mother's Day in Australian hospitals, where Janet Hayden collected gifts for lonely mothers who had lost children to war—a far cry from today's commercial celebrations.Beyond the greeting cards lies a profound truth: motherhood carries both extraordinary power and invisible weight. With over 6.5 million mothers in Australia—one in six raising children alone and one in three families navigating developmental needs—the statistics tell only part of the story. Each number represents real women making countless unseen sacrifices daily. The biological toll of parenting is rarely discussed but critically important. Chronic stress literally changes cellular function, with parents of children with disabilities facing significantly higher risks of depression and burnout. This is why self-care isn't selfish—it's survival. Speaking kindly to yourself, resting without guilt, and asking for help before breaking aren't luxuries but necessities that allow you to show up fully for your children. We journey across cultures to witness the beautiful diversity of mothering: Indian mothers balancing multiple roles while honoring traditions, Nepali mothers nurturing with quiet dignity, Chinese mothers sacrificing for their children's futures, African communities sharing mothering responsibilities, and First Nations mothers preserving cultural wisdom across generations. Each expression carries its own wisdom and strength.Motherhood extends beyond birth. Some mother through adoption, like my own mother who chose me. Some mother in classrooms or therapy rooms. Some mother through grief after loss. Your presence today—how you speak to yourself, honor your needs, set boundaries—creates ripples through generations. When you break negative cycles, your child gains freedom to do the same.Ready to transform your parenting journey? The Empowered Parent Program helps you shift from self-doubt to self-worth, creating lasting change not just for yourself but for generations to come. Send us a textNavigating the complex world of early childhood education can feel overwhelming for parents. In this illuminating conversation with Neelam Khatri, a kindergarten teacher with a Master's degree in teaching, we uncover the hidden depths of what really happens in childcare settings and kindergartens across Australia.Neelam shares her personal journey from Nepal to Australia, where she discovered her passion for early childhood education after witnessing the pure joy of children in learning environments. What began as an exploratory career move blossomed into her true calling, eventually leading her to pursue advanced qualifications and extensive experience across various educational settings.Perhaps most fascinating is Neelam's perspective on why children behave differently at home versus kindergarten. "The most safe space for them is where their mom and dad are," she explains, offering parents a comforting framework for understanding their child's seemingly contradictory behaviors. As both an educator and mother of two young children, Neelam brings a uniquely balanced perspective that bridges professional expertise with lived parental experience. For parents selecting childcare options, Neelam provides invaluable criteria to consider: from centre size and communication methods to educational philosophies and staff qualifications. She demystifies the differences between various early childhood settings, breaks down staff-to-child ratios, and explains the extensive behind-the-scenes work educators perform—from documentation and programming to personalized learning support. We also explore Australia's evolving early childhood landscape, including plans to extend free kindergarten programs to three-year-olds by 2032, and discuss the vital supports available for children with diverse needs. Throughout our conversation, Neelam emphasizes that play is learning, and that skilled educators are constantly observing, documenting, and nurturing development through seemingly simple activities.Whether you're a first-time parent navigating childcare options or seeking to better understand your child's educational experience, this episode offers expert guidance, compassionate perspectives, and practical wisdom from someone who truly understands both sides of the early childhood journey. danabaltutis.com, mytherapyhouse.com.au, https://mytherapyhouse.com.au/your-childs-therapy-journey/ https://www.danabaltutis.com/services

With a twinkle in her eye and wisdom gained from decades of working with young children, Kerry shares why she considers play "the highest form of research," echoing Einstein's famous quote. What makes this conversation particularly valuable is Kerry's ability to demystify the developmental stages of play. She expertly guides us through the progression from exploratory and solitary play to more complex cooperative interactions, while emphasizing that children naturally move back and forth between these stages as they encounter new situations. This insight alone helps parents understand why their child might seem to "regress" in certain play contexts.Kerry challenges conventional thinking about sharing, explaining that it's not always developmentally appropriate to expect young children to share. She introduces the concept of a child's "play history"—the unique experiences and associations they bring to each play scenario that shape their responses. This fresh perspective invites parents to view children's reluctance to share not as defiance, but as a natural part of development related to concepts like object permanence and time perception.Perhaps most reassuring is Kerry's advice for parents who feel awkward or inexperienced with play. She encourages starting where you're comfortable, gradually expanding your play repertoire by observing your child's reactions, and remembering that different family members can contribute valuable elements to a child's play experiences. Through vivid descriptions that bring play scenarios to life, Kerry demonstrates how simple interactions—like matching a child's jumping rhythm with a drumbeat—can build connection and communication pathways.Whether you're preparing your child for kindergarten, supporting a sensory-seeking child, or simply wanting to enrich family playtime, this conversation offers practical wisdom delivered with genuine warmth. How do you know which approaches might help your unique child thrive?Rose Irranca, a social worker with over 20 years of experience working with children, faced this exact challenge. After adding neuro-linguistic programming, hypnotherapy, Reiki, and kids' yoga to her professional toolkit, she struggled to connect with families who were open to these powerful but often misunderstood approaches. This sparked her vision for Holistic Kids – Australia's first comprehensive directory connecting families with practitioners who nurture the whole child. The conversation delves into why children's natural intuitive abilities and connection to their subconscious mind often diminish around age seven, and how holistic approaches can help them maintain this powerful self-awareness. Rose shares powerful examples of looking beyond symptoms to root causes – whether for bedwetting, anxiety, or behavioral challenges – and how diverse modalities from child acupuncture to specialized Pilates can address issues conventional approaches might miss. With 33 businesses already registered across Australia after launching just three weeks ago, Holistic Kids is rapidly growing into a movement that normalizes complementary approaches to children's wellbeing. Rose's vision extends beyond creating a directory to building a collective voice that can advocate for children's holistic health needs at policy levels. If you're a parent seeking more comprehensive support for your child or a practitioner wanting to connect with families who value holistic approaches, this episode illuminates the path toward integration, collaboration, and truly supporting children to thrive in body, mind and spirit. Her journey reveals the hidden struggle of families in remote communities facing five-year waiting lists, three-hour drives to specialists, and profound isolation.Bethany shares how her own neurodivergence became her superpower, creating therapy sessions that look nothing like traditional table-work. "If they want to be under the table with a blanket over the top, that's completely fine. If we're walking on the beach having fun, that's fine too," she explains. This flexible approach helps her connect with clients who might otherwise struggle in conventional settings. The boundaries between professional and personal blur dramatically in small towns where your GP might also treat your clients, and grocery shopping becomes a therapy reunion. Yet these close connections create rich, meaningful relationships that sustain both therapist and client through challenges. These foundation skills are essential building blocks that support all future communication development.• Reacting to sounds and people in the environment forms the basis of listening and understanding• Responding to people and turn-taking establishes the back-and-forth pattern essential for conversation• Attention span is crucial as children need to stay focused to absorb language information• Joint attention allows children to share experiences with caregivers about objects or events• Playing with toys provides exploration opportunities and contexts for language learning• Understanding familiar words precedes the ability to speak them• Vocalizing and making different sounds develops into first wordsParents often focus exclusively on getting their child to say words, missing the importance of building connection first. Children need to hear words repeatedly in different contexts for approximately six months before they can use them meaningfully. Using facial expressions, animated voices, and body language ("affect") helps captivate children's attention and makes words "stick."Instead of asking lots of questions, provide information by commenting and naming things in your child's environment. Send us a textCould laughter be the most underrated therapy for both children and adults? Meet Annie Harvey, affectionately known as "the laughter therapist," whose journey from stressed caregiver to laughter yoga leader offers a fascinating glimpse into how simulated laughter can transform our neurological health.Annie shares her powerful story of caring for her parents with dementia and discovering that three minutes of mindfulness practice three times a week dramatically changed how she responded to stress. But it was a chance encounter with laughter yoga at a Dalai Lama event that truly transformed her approach to wellbeing. Now, she helps others understand the science behind why even "fake" laughter produces genuine neurological benefits. The conversation explores how laughter stimulates the vagus nerve—that crucial communication pathway running from brain to spine—flooding our bodies with feel-good hormones like dopamine, oxytocin, serotonin, and endorphins. For parents and educators working with neurodivergent children, this offers a powerful co-regulation tool summarized in Annie's beautiful phrase: "Let them join your calm, don't join their chaos."What's particularly fascinating is how many neurodivergent children instinctively use humming and buzzing to self-regulate—they're naturally stimulating their vagus nerve! Annie suggests that before teaching children complex emotional regulation techniques, we might start by helping them identify where they feel laughter in their bodies, building emotional literacy through positive sensations first.Whether you're a parent, educator, therapist, or simply someone who recognizes they don't laugh enough, Annie's accessible approach offers practical tools for improving wellbeing. Her upcoming "Laughter Effect" workshop and new book "The Burnout Blueprint for Caregivers" promise to bring these techniques to those who need them most. When was your last genuine belly laugh?
