Ramesses II defends his borders. In the early years of his reign, Ramesses focussed on home defence. His army established new forts at remote locations along the western Delta and Mediterranean Coast (Marmarica). Traces of this work can be found at famous locations like el-Alamein, Mersa Matruh, and Zawiyet Umm el-Rakham, the latter of which has been the object of detailed excavation in recent decades. Apparently, Ramesses was fortifying his frontiers, guarding the western approaches to Egypt. Soon after, the pharaoh went forth on campaign. His target? The cities of Canaan and Amurru, in modern-day Lebanon. Along the way, he left inscriptions at Nahr el-Kalb, which started a surprisingly long-lived tradition... Hi everyone! My friend Dominic at THoE and I are doing a feed-swap this week. It's a great chance to introduce you to his new set of episodes on the pharaoh Ramesses II. More details from Dominic below. Enjoy! - Scott C. In a land famous for its monarchs – the legendary pharaohs – there is no one quite like Ramesses II. He might be the most famous of all, and we know a heck of a lot more about Ramesses than other rulers like Tutankhamun or Cleopatra VII. Now, after twelve years of narrative history, The History of Egypt Podcast is finally beginning the reign of this immortal monarch. The age of Ramesses defines much of what scholars and historians know about ancient Egypt; from the construction of temples and monuments, to the daily life of ordinary citizens… The History of Egypt Podcast is exploring all of it, in as much detail as possible. Along the way, we'll explore tales like the Battle of Kadesh, when Egypt and the Hittites went head-to-head in bloody conflict; or the Biblical Exodus – did it really happen, and what do we know about it? We'll visit monuments like Abu Simbel and the famed Ramesseum, home of the largest statues ever built in Egyptian history. And throughout these tales, we'll meet ordinary folks, in different walks of life, who left their mark on history. Bourbon Pursuit and Pursuit Spirits Enter the Whiskey Ring What do you ask when your guests have over 1,000 podcast episodes over three shows and 10 years? That was my task this week - let me know how I did!  My guests are Kenny Coleman and Ryan Cecil, hosts of the Bourbon Pursuit podcast and founders of Pursuit Spirits, an NDP grown out of their love of bourbon and rye and, in my mind, the dream that many of us on this side of the mic think about in our wildest fantasies.  The first thing, though is simple: with a full-time business (opening a new, second physical location and eventually aiming for 50,000 6-pack cases per year), three shows, and full-time jobs, how do they manage their time? How do you keep all the plates in the air? How do you take a piss-in-your-cheerios type like Kenny and keep the momentum up through challenges? If you're a long-time listener of Bourbon Pursuit, Behind the Pursuit, and Whiskey Quickies, you'll know most of their story, and I didn't want to reinvent the wheel. Instead, we dove into their business model, the changes in drinking habits over 10 years of podcasting and running a whiskey business, and how once in awhile their wives will still hold it over them that it was the wives who introduced the two guys all that time ago.  There are also deeper questions. We keep hearing brands have to own their backyard before growing further, but there's an asterisk: unless you live in Kentucky, where you simply can't own your backyard. How do you create a subscription model that incentivizes people to stay with you without overwhelming or outpricing them?  And finally, there's a new question adapted from *nerdiness alert* The History of Egypt Podcast: if there was one thing in whiskey that is currently unknown or uncertain and you could know or be sure, what would it be? The answer might surprise you - it certainly surprised me!  Thank you to Kenny and Ryan for entering the Whiskey Ring! Restoration, Recovery, Wreckage. Around 2520 BCE, King Men-kau-ra (or Menkaure) ruled Egypt. In his time, royal artists produced high-quality sculpture, and builders constructed another pyramid at Giza. But Menkaura has a complicated legacy. Although his pyramid is the smallest of the three "Great Pyramids of Giza," this King's legacy proved far more positive than his predecessors. Likewise his treasures, including his beautiful sarcophagus, have gone through a difficult journey over the past 4500 years... How archaeology can increase your life expectancy by 40%! For centuries, popular perceptions of the Great Pyramid's construction have hinged on Herodotos reference to “twenty years.” While historians have debated that, hard evidence on the reign of Khufu (and its length) has always been fragmentary. In the past ten years, though, things have changed substantially. We now have strong evidence that Khufu reigned much longer than the “twenty years” story. This fundamentally changes our understanding of the period, and the Great Pyramid project… More information: Episode image: Khufu, small ivory statuette from Abydos (Egyptian Exploration Society archives). Two letters that tell tales. A model letter from c.1250 BCE tells us of a wayward scribe, who fell off the path of ma'at and became lost in drunkeness, indolence and womanizing. Disappointed in his former pupil, a schoolmaster writes to the scribe, rebuking him for his lifestyle and failures. Then, around 1250 BCE an Egyptian father wrote a letter to his wayward son. The boy had joined a ship's crew and was now abroad, but had not sent any word of his well-being. Anxious, the father wrote a poignant letter begging his son to return. That letter survives and reveals wonderful parts of ancient life…Warning: this episode may not be suitable for all ages. The Deified Dozen. The ancient Egyptian calendar had its origins in lunar traditions (following the moon), but later transitioned to a 365-day solar system. Over the course of twelve months, the Egyptians marked three major seasons and honoured many deities. Festivals to goddesses and gods brought pageantry and partying to the temples. People honoured the great deities, and they sought to unify the world of nature with that of the living, and sometimes even the dead... Waarom komt het Oude Egypte veel vaker voor in films, documentaires en boeken dan andere vergelijkbare vroege beschavingen? Maya, Ay, Horemheb, and others. The men who served King Tut'ankhamun were unusually prominent and powerful. The Overseer of the Treasury (Maya), the Supreme General (Horemheb) and the highest courtier (Ay) may have divided power among themselves. Why were they so powerful? Welcome to episode 11 of the Wonder Junkie Podcast featuring the host of the History of Egypt Podcast, Dominic Perry.  The history of Egypt is something that continues to fascinate me. From their early beginnings to the construction of the pyramids and their eventual decline, it’s a subject matter I never seem to be able to step away from.  Whilst I spend a lot of time working on Wonder Junkie, I also love to listen to other podcasts… Notable mentions to StarTalk Radio, Distraction Pieces with Scroobius Pip, Stuff You Should Know and of course The History Of Egypt with Dominic Perry.  I was absolutely delighted when I found Dominic’s podcast as I had binged my way through the BBC’s output on Egypt (which is fantastic) but I still felt like I needed more. The way Dominic has broken down the history of Egypt is brilliant, breaking it down episode-by-episode and making it consumable to people like myself who have an interest in Egypt but don’t have time to study it properly.  In the podcast we spoke about how Dominic began his journey into studying the history of Egypt, what he thinks will be discovered in relation to Tutankhamun / Queen Nefertiti’s tomb, why the Nubians have been under-studied and how the ancient Egyptian civilization started to decline.  I was lucky enough to visit Egypt last year as part of a tour group with the company, TopDeck. Whilst I would always recommend that you take every safety precaution needed when visiting Egypt, I would highly recommend visiting in this way, as my experience put simply was incredible. This was because not only did you feel safe, but you also had great local Egyptian guides on hand to point out the things you would otherwise overlook. You also don’t have to worry about food or transport as that’s all taken care of and you get to make some great friends along the journey. So it might sound cliché but Egypt truly is a magical place and you really can’t appreciate something like the Great Pyramid Of Giza or The Valley Of The Kings or sailing The Nile until you actually see and experience it.  As Dominic says in the podcast “Slightly more than 50% of human history has involved the Egyptians” and there’s something I find so profound about that. The more and more I learn about the Egyptians, the more I feel I learn about human nature and ourselves. War, Economies, Cities, Monarchy… all of these things are still present today and by looking back to the Egyptians who have had the rule of the roost for most of human history thus far, there is a tremendous amount we can learn.  I remember when I was in school there was a quote on the door of the history classroom that said, “History isn't just the past, it's our guide to the present and the future”. Whilst I certainly didn’t appreciate it at the time, as I look at the world around me today I think there is a great deal we can learn from history, not just in the mistakes we’ve made but the successes as well.  The story of the ancient Egyptians is one that will be told for as long as we exist; obviously, with a history stretching over thousands of years that story could never be fully told in one podcast episode. But I hope you enjoy this podcast and discover some things along the way (I certainly did), thank you again to Dominic for being a guest on Wonder Junkie and if you enjoy this episode, a review on iTunes or Stitcher as always is greatly appreciated.  http://petebailey.net/podcast
