Modern IUDs - intrauterine devices - are a safe form of contraception for most women. But this wasn't always the case. Author Chikako Takeshita traces the history and development of these devices, originally created for population control in 1960s, and talks about one IUD in particular, the Dalkon Shield, which would cause widespread harm to the women who used it, and in some cases, had lethal consequences.Click the 'Follow' button for more women's health stories.Show notes:The Global Biopolitics of the IUD: https://mitpress.mit.edu/9780262547840/the-global-biopolitics-of-the-iud/Chikako Takeshita: Associate Professor at the University of California Riverside - https://profiles.ucr.edu/app/home/profile/chikakotMore information about IUDs: https://my.clevelandclinic.org/health/treatments/24441-intrauterine-device-iud New to Overlooked? In her role as CFO of California Bank & Trust, Chikako Tyler faced the collapse of Silicon Valley Bank—the second financial crisis of her career. Unlike the first crisis, the Great Recession, which forced her to leave a rewarding career in commercial real estate, this time, Tyler was prepared to take charge. In 2009, as the economic downturn decimated the real estate market, Tyler recognized the need for a change. She pivoted to banking, taking on a temporary role at California Bank & Trust, where she quickly discovered her passion for the intricacies of finance. Her journey through various roles in the bank—ranging from specialized asset analysis to risk management—shaped her understanding of the business and led her to the CFO office. By the time Silicon Valley Bank collapsed in 2023, Tyler had nearly five years of experience as CFO under her belt. Drawing on the lessons from her diverse career, she confidently navigated the crisis. Unlike the uncertainty she faced during the Great Recession, Tyler leaned into her role, guiding her team through the tumultuous period. She championed her bankers to manage their customers proactively, quelling any possibility of panic. Tyler's journey from real estate to banking, and from crisis to confident leadership, underscores her adaptability and strategic mindset. Her ability to transform challenges into opportunities has not only defined her career but also strengthened California Bank & Trust's resilience in uncertain times.

If You Are Lonely, You Are Not Alone: Explorations Into the Lonely SocietyThis podcast brings us face to face with one of the most distressing issues of the modern world. Despite unprecedented wealth, security and opportunity, rates of suicide have risen more or less continuously over the last generation. Young people, who have their entire lives before them, have been especially hard hit. Although we usually think of suicide as an individual problem, in this podcast Chikako Ozawa de Silva, Associate Professor of Anthropology at Emory University, shows how intimately suicide is connected with aspects of modern life that generate loneliness. We discuss her recent book, The Anatomy of Loneliness: Suicide, Social Connection and the Search for Relational Meaning in Contemporary Japan (University of California Press, 2021) which chronicles how a growing sense of alienation within Japanese society has resulted in problems ranging from hikikomori, the practice of young people shutting themselves away from the world, to internet group suicide, in which people voluntarily choose to commit suicide as a group so they can die in the company of others to avoid enduring a natural death so completely alone. We talk about how Japan may be a worrying bellwether for other developed nations in which loneliness increasingly means being unseen, unrecognized, unsafe and unloved. And although there are no magic bullets, Dr. Ozawa de Silva's unique perspective offers hope for ways we can work together as a society to reduce many of the sources of alienation that drive so many people to end their lives.Featuring:Dr. Chikako Ozawa de Silva, Associate Professor of Anthropology at Emory UniversityHost:Charles Raison, Psychiatrist, Professor at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and Emory UniversityAbout Emory University's Center for the Study of Human Health:The Emory Center for the Study of Human Health was developed to expand health knowledge and translate this knowledge to all aspects of life – for the individual and populations as a whole. Kdo so bili ti ljudje? Zakaj so potovali v tiste kraje? Kako so doživeli kulturni šok srečanja s civilizacijo, o kateri pred odhodom slej ko prej niso vedeli prav veliko? Kaj jih je očaralo in kaj razočaralo? Kako so o tem izkustvu pisali svojim domačim?

Loneliness is everybody's business. Neither a pathology, nor a rare affliction, it is part of the human condition. Severe and chronic loneliness, however, is a threat to individual and public health and appears to be on the rise. In 2018, U.K. Prime Minister Theresa May said, “Loneliness is one of the greatest public health challenges of our time,” and appointed the country's first ever Minister for Loneliness. Contemporary scholarship is therefore focusing on loneliness not as merely an individual matter, but as a public health issue that negatively impacts both physical and psychological health, even increasing the risk of mortality. This talk examines what is and is not loneliness, conditions of the “lonely society” and the role of culture in loneliness. Based on my long-term ethnographic studies, I point to how society itself can exacerbate experiences of loneliness. One of the most important messages of this talk, is that the anatomy of loneliness is not the anatomy of a single individual, but of a type of society. In our penultimate episode, Wez and the pool have interesting balls, Taishi and Chikako spend the night together, and we say goodbye to old and new cast members as the show ends.
This week Taishi and Chikako's relationship comes to a head, as the panel wears amazing t-shirts, a soccer game unnecessarily brings back some old friends, and Tori-chan knows that unzipping is only for after marriage.
On this extra long episode, we meet Chikako's ex-husband, the panel rags on Taishi for the wrong reasons, and Cheri's character is called into question at the most bizarre house meeting we've ever seen.
This week Chikako and Taishi's double date is a spectacular mess, Ryo and Mariko bring a more communal feel back to the house, and our hosts have some asides about Don Quixote and beer knowledge.
On this episode Guy and Mila have a refreshingly human conversation, Taishi is extra, Chikako tries too hard to be sexy, and half of the house lives up to the episode title.
This week we discuss Taishi's intentions and give our inexpert opinions on Wez's show, while the panel continues to sexualize Chikako and speaks for all of us asking why Anna and Eric are coming back.
In Part 4, Episode 3 we jump into Chikako's romantic past, the panel goes too far, and Taishi needs to slow down (ooh-oo-whooaa-oo-whoa-oo-whoa).
