Kawabata's contributions to Acid Mothers Temple have helped establish the band as a prominent figure in the underground music scene, known for their captivating live performances and boundary-pushing compositions.

Japan-born Soichi Kawabata brings 26 years of traditional and hyper-focused knife-wielding skills to South Yarra's Yakikami in its Wagyu Omakase offering. Growing up in Fukuako – a coastal city known for its seafood culture, Soichi spent his younger years on fishing trips with his father. Here, the pair would catch different types of fish and bring them back to the family to share, and create something special.  To respect and identify quality produce was something he was taught on these trips, igniting Soichi's love affair with cooking and confirming his destiny lay within the walls of a kitchen.   Soichi began his professional career under Mr Fukuuako where he spent the next five years building a strong and refined foundation of haute Japanese cuisine. The high standard of this position, along with his unwavering work ethic saw him quickly move up the ranks. Before leaving, Soichi obtained his certificate in Fugu – a sought-after licence allowing one to prepare and serve the Japanese delicacy, Fugu (pufferfish). Fascinated with the cultural identity of Australia, Soichi decided to widen his culinary journey and moved in 2005 where he found himself at Neil White's Pure South. Further advancing his techniques and learning what it took to create a full dining experience Soichi spent many years learning and familiarising himself with Australian produce and a new customer palette. Soichi has cemented himself as an expert in the Japanese culinary world with a passion and love for Japanese cuisine. With a focus on customer experience, guests can expect to learn expert tips during their Wagyu Omakase experience every time they sit at Soichi's counter.

He recognized early that the Indo-Pacific will (re)occupy center stage as it did throughout most of history, barring a brief Atlanticist interregnum. And then he did something about it, by proposing the Quad and the “free and open Indo-Pacific”. He realized that China would revert to imperialism, and would have to be contained.Abe-san understood that America would withdraw into its comfort zone (“Fortress America”) as its economic and military dominance diminished. It was up to Asians to defend themselves, and not depend on cross-Pacific partnerships. This may have driven his nationalist sentiments. Japan, with its proud history, could not forever be anybody’s junior partner. It would have to assert itself, and it could no longer be hobbled by the pacifist Article 9 imposed by the US, that prevented it from arming itself. All of this has come to pass, more or less. After Obama’s content-free “pivot to Asia”, Biden’s obsessions with Russia, Ukraine and AUKUS, and China’s consistent saber-rattling along its entire periphery, it is evident that the old “liberal, rules-based international order” with its Euro-American bias can no longer protect Asia’s democracies. A muscular Quad, or even an ‘Asian NATO’ is necessary.This is critical for India’s very survival, and Abe helped turn around Japan’s official attitude towards India. Even his grandfather, former Prime Minister Kishi Nobusuke, had been positive towards India, but Abe-san turned out to be a true friend. Under him, relations bloomed; and from a stance of anger at India’s Pokhran blasts, Japan has now become India’s most, and in fact only, trusted partner. This endeared Japan’s longest-serving PM, Abe-san, to many Indians. He believed in India, and it showed. So much so that some of us are in personal mourning. India has lost its best friend, and in a world where it has no friends, that is a tremendous loss: even after he resigned the PM position on health grounds, Abe-san continued to generate goodwill for Indo-Japanese partnerships. The last time the death of a foreign leader affected Indians so much was when John F Kennedy was assassinated in 1963.Prime Minister Modi put it well in a personal note, “My friend, Abe-san” https://www.narendramodi.in/my-friend-abe-san-563044. He also declared a day of national mourning. Among his greatest gifts to us and his most enduring legacy, and one for which the world will always be indebted, is his foresight in recognizing the changing tides and gathering storm of our time and his leadership in responding to it. Long before others, he, in his seminal speech to the Indian Parliament in 2007, laid the ground for the emergence of the Indo-Pacific region as a contemporary political, strategic and economic reality - a region that will also shape the world in this century.There is a starkly different, and possibly grossly unfair, characterization of Abe-san in the US media, as some kind of ultra-nationalist. The left-leaning NPR was positively churlish. But then this goes back to the Manichean/Abrahamic “with us or against us” dualism put about by US sources. They portray Japan as being particularly wicked, with Pearl Harbor as Original Sin, and the “Yellow Peril” as being particularly dangerous, deserving of the ultimate horror of the atomic bombs in Hiroshima and Nagasaki.Remarkably enough, this was along the same lines as the vitriol from China.I can understand China being extraordinarily mean. That’s just par for the course. But an American outlet saying this is a little surprising, that too a public-sector, publicly-funded, non-commercial entity. Are there wheels within wheels?But wait, here’s more:Growing up in India, I too was subject to this negative barrage, but I had the advantage of reading Malayalam translations of Tanizaki, Kawabata and Lady Murasaki in my teenage days. I understood Japan as a unique but Dharmic civilization with integrity and codes of honor. Later, I read about Subhas Bose’s perspective on imperial Japan, and its support for the Indian National Army. Many years later, I went to Nair-san’s Indian restaurant on the Ginza in Tokyo: he had been Rash Behari Bose’s interpreter. The dichotomy of reactions persists. The Western-Chinese narrative against Japan was one of convenience; on the one hand, the Chinese realized that they just needed to shout “Rape of Nanjing”, and the Japanese would give them money to shut them up. On the other hand, the famous “liberal rules-based international order” (see my deconstruction thereof at ) consistently tried to keep Japan down as a low-caste vassal even when it was the world’s second largest economy.There was an enormous fuss about the fact that Abe-san visited the Yasukuni Shrine, the memorial to Japan’s war dead. I could never quite understand this. Every country is entitled to remember its warriors, and most do, with gratitude. Why is it that Japan, alone, was prohibited from doing so? In 2019, I visited the shrine myself. It is a stately, mournful, quiet place of introspection. It has a magnificent torii, a museum, and a shrine. It is pure gaslighting to claim this place is somehow loathsome.And it has a memorial to Justice Radhabinod Pal, the Indian jurist who was part of the War Crimes Tribunal post World War II. He was the only dissenting voice in what he more or less said was a kangaroo court. Its intention, from the victors’ point of view, was to extract revenge rather than to arrive at the truth about the war. If some Japanese military men were deemed war criminals, were William Calley of My Lai and Henry Kissinger who ordered the carpet-bombing of neutral Cambodia any less?It was an honor for me to stand before Justice Pal’s memorial. Many older Japanese are grateful to Justice Pal for what he did then; Abe-san, though he was born a few years after the trials, may have heard from his grandfather Kishi-san about it. There are several other connections to India. I used to visit Japan frequently on business in the 1990s, and I found a number of links old and new. Kabuki, for example, is rather similar to Kathakali in concept. Sanskrit is still chanted in Japan’s Buddhist temples, and they write it in the Siddham script that is extinct in India, but seen in temples in Japan.I found actual Devanagari written on the Peace Bell in Hiroshima: it is one of the sutras that constitute prayers for the dead. In Nara, where Abe-san was assassinated, there is the famous great bronze Buddha in the Todaiji temple. In the adjacent park, where a lot of tame deer roam, there is also a reproduction of the Ashoka Stambha, the Lion Capital of Sarnath, the emblem of the sovereign republic of Bharat/India.The links between India and Japan go back a long way, at least to Daruma, or Bodhi Dharma, the preceptor of the Zen school of Buddhism, who took kalari payat and Buddhist philosophy to the Shaolin monastery in China, around 500 CE. He was reputedly a Pallava prince, who embarked from Muziris or Kodungallur in Kerala. There is the famous Zen koan, “Why did Bodhi Dharma go east?”.Is that why Abe-san came west to India? Eccoci con una nuova puntata delle "Pillole di letteratura giapponese" con NipPop! La nostra Paola Scrolavezza oggi ci parla di "La banda di Asakusa" di Kawabata Yasunari, pubblicato da Einaudi nella traduzione di Costantino Pes nel 2007. Questo romanzo scritto tra il 1929 e il 1930 è tra i meno conosciuti dell'autore ma rappresenta sicuramente un'interessantissima chicca. In particolare, racchiude lo spirito del movimento dello Shinkankakuha, un gruppo letterario centrale per la poetica modernista in Giappone, che dal 1924 accolse giovani scrittori affascinati da ogni forma di avanguardia. "La banda di Asakusa" si colloca in un momento particolare della storia giapponese, nel settembre del 1923: l'anno del grande terremoto del Kantō, che distrusse ciò che restava della vecchia Edo, compreso il quartiere di Asakusa, al centro del racconto. La trama segue, in quest'atmosfera in bilico tra tradizione e modernità, le vicende della Banda Scarlatta di Asakusa, una compagnia teatrale che si dedica anche ad attività di furto. Akemi Kawabata, Melbourne comedian, is originally from Osaka, Japan. Her style is cheeky & “naughty”. She's lots of fun to watch and hang out with. We discuss how she first came here 26 years ago on a working holiday visa, and knew very quickly that she wanted to stay here. She hardly spoke a word of English when she first arrived and studied hard to become an interpreter and work in Tourism. We talk about the Japanese drumming group she played with in Melbourne, connecting with people here, cultural differences between Japan and Australia, family violence and finding her voice in comedy after being silenced all her life in Japan. Akemi has overcome many obstacles to be where she is today. She rejected the only narrative given to her in Japan, made the break, took the risks and now lives the life that she wants to live here in Melbourne. Inspired by a friend here in Melbourne, who did open mic comedy, Akemi completed a stand up comedy course at the end of 2019. Not a great time to start comedy, in retrospect. Nonetheless, Akemi has been gigging regularly (when the venues have been open) and we met at Yes All Women's at The Highlander Bar in 2020. Off stage Akemi can be a bit introverted, so this podcast is a great opportunity to get to know her better. There sure are some Uncomfortable Truths in Akemi's story! I feel very privileged that Akemi was so honest with me. That's one thing about becoming a comedian – you become more comfortable talking about some brutal truths about yourself, especially if you can make them funny. I find 2 things happen for me when hearing about other people's challenges and difficulties from the past. Firstly, I have great respect for that person, because I see what they have had to overcome to be who they are. Secondly, I feel gratitude. Whether it's being able bodied, or not having suffered through family violence, I feel gratitude for things that I just always took for granted. This week, Claire and I savor Yasunari Kawabata's Snow Country, and talk about its dream-like quality, its fusion of opposites, ideas of emptiness, openness, oneness, beautifulness, its conception of love and death, and ask what the meaning of life is according to this novel. 

In this podcast, I'll be talking to Dr Maiko Kawabata, Lecturer at the world-famous Royal College of Music. This podcast discussion was recorded earlier this month, in the wake of the tragic events surrounding the murdering of George Floyd. It was also recorded just a year after the pioneering symposium "Cultural Imperialism and the New 'Yellow Peril' in Western Classical Music," which took place in June 2019 at Senate House, London. The aim of this study way to encourage open discussions about "yellowness" and race within the classical music industry and to pave the way for further discussions such as those. We also talk about Dr Kawabata's background as a professional violinist and how she combines this with her work in academia to explore in her research notions of virtuosity, particularly, in the violin tradition of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. She has published a book that dispels common ideas around virtuosity, with specific reference to Paganini, who was, of course, one of the great violin virtuosi of his day. Description: This week we're reading the first half of Snow Country by Yasunari Kawabata. It is the story of a well to-do traveler named Shimamura who heads into the mountains as a relief from the busy world of Tokyo - this is known as Snow country, where in the winter seasons the snowfall can accumulate to up to fifteen feet. During his stay at the inn in a mountain village he is introduced to the young, fickle geisha Komako, an intriguing and erratic personality. Both her and Shimamura oscillate between attraction and repulsion in this somber tale of the impossible love between a mountain geisha and a city dweller. We leave off this first section with Shimamura leaving for Tokyo, not sure if what he experienced was real and Kamako heading back to attend to a sick friend. Yasunari Kawabata was the son of a well established family in Osaka. After establishing himself as a respected writer in Japan, he founded the New Writing movement as an intervention between the Naturalist writers of the establishment and the proletarian writers of the Socialist and Communist movements. The New Writing movement's guiding principle was “art for art's sake.” Kawabata is one of Japan's most celebrated authors and is internationally recognized being the first Japanese author to win the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1968. In addition to Snow Country, he has been the author of several other novels such as “Thousand Cranes”, “The Sound of the Mountain”, and “The Old Capital”. His style is marked by a sense of mystery and minimalism, and a common subject of his work, including Snow Country, is the idea of ill-fated love. Kawabata died in 1972 which was officially concluded to be a sucide by gassing, although there is some doubt whether it was accidental. Kawabata was friends with the famous Japaense novelist Yukia Mishima, and it is recounted by Kawabata's biographer Takeo Okuno, that after Mishima's suicide Kawabata was plagued by nightmares about his deceased friend. Abstract: The unique fast spiking (FS) phenotype of cortical parvalbumin-positive (PV) neurons depends on multiple subtypes of voltage-gated potassium channels (Kv). PV neurons selectively express Kcns3, the gene encoding Kv9.3 subunits, suggesting that Kcns3 expression is critical for the FS phenotype. KCNS3 expression is lower in PV neurons in schizophrenia, but the effects of this alteration are unclear, because Kv9.3 subunit function is poorly understood. We therefore assessed the role of Kv9.3 subunits in PV neuron function by combining gene expression analyses, computational modeling, and electrophysiology in acute slices from the cortex of Kcns3-deficient mice Kcns3 mRNA levels were ~50% lower in cortical PV neurons from Kcns3-deficient relative to wildtype mice. While silent per se, Kv9.3 subunits are believed to amplify the Kv2.1 current in Kv2.1-Kv9.3 channel complexes. Hence, to assess the consequences of reducing Kv9.3 levels, we simulated the effects of decreasing the Kv2.1-mediated current in a computational model. The FS cell model with reduced Kv2.1 produced spike trains with irregular inter-spike intervals, or stuttering, and greater Na+ channel inactivation, possibly due to a smaller afterhyperpolarization. As in the computational model, PV basket cells (PVBCs) from Kcns3-deficient mice displayed spike trains with strong stuttering, which depressed PVBC firing, and smaller afterhyperpolarization. Moreover, Kcns3 deficiency impaired the recruitment of PVBCs by stimuli mimicking synaptic input during cortical UP states, which elicited bursts of spikes at gamma frequency. Our data suggest that Kv9.3 subunits are critical for PVBC physiology, and that KCNS3 deficiency in schizophrenia may impair the substrate of gamma oscillations. (February 11, actually, but I think if I change the title I may change the link.) We start with Earle Stanley Gardner on writing by the word -- then on to Kawabata and the spookiness of the story.  Then The Merchant of Venice, and the significance of the rings and their value.  The reason Shylock is a stranger, and that all the Jews in Venice are: because Deuteronomy permits lending at interest to a stranger, so the Christians wanted to be strangers to the Jews so made the Jews strangers to them.  The stranger in Simmel mentioned: "The wanderer [the merchant] is he who comes today and goes tomorrow; the stranger is he who comes today and stays tomorrow."  At least I am sure it may be so in Venice.

A class where we end up going into the labor theory of value -- average abstract labor time being what produces equilibria among different commodities.  We were going to talk about Kawabata, and about interest, but that's TK.  We did talk about Aristotle -- and therefore a bit about Adam Smith -- on the functions of actual money: medium of exchange, bookkeeping measure, store of value, and also a bit on how these can be confused with each other.

"A successful writing day is the day that I suffer in the morning, and I have fun in the evening." -Paulo Coelho Paulo Coelho (@paulocoelho) has long been one of my writing inspirations. His books, of near universal appeal, spans from The Alchemist to the most recent Adultery and has been translated into more than 70 languages. Few people know that The Alchemist, which has sold more than 65 million copies worldwide, was originally published by a small Brazilian publisher to the tune of... 900 copies. They declined to reprint it. It wasn't until after his subsequent novel (Brida) that The Alchemist was revived and took off. I, for one, have always been impressed with consistent writers. Paulo, who averages one book every two years, is staggeringly consistent. As I type this, I am under the pressure of deadlines and often feel as Kurt Vonnegut did: "When I write, I feel like an armless, legless man with a crayon in his mouth." My output is erratic at best, and I wondered: how does Paulo write? What is his process? How does he think about it? Wim Hof (@Iceman_hof) is a Dutch world record holder, adventurer and daredevil, commonly nicknamed “The Iceman" for his ability to withstand extreme cold. He is the creator of the Wim Hof Method and holds more than 20 world records. Wim is an outlier of outliers, as he routinely asks scientists to scrutinize and validate his feats. Here are just a few examples: In 2007, he climbed past the “death zone" altitude on Mount Everest (~7,500 meters) wearing nothing but shorts. In 2009, Hof completed a full marathon above the polar circle in Finland, in temperatures close to −20 °C (−4 °F). Dressed in nothing but shorts, Hof finished in 5 hours and 25 minutes. Hof holds the current Guinness World Record for the longest ice bath, now set at 1 hour 53 minutes and 12 seconds. But it’s not just cold. In 2011, he ran a full marathon in the Namib Desert without water. The run was performed under the supervision of Dr. Thijs Eijsvogels. He can also run at altitude without suffering from altitude sickness. In the same year, he was injected with toxins under doctor supervision and demonstrated that he could effectively control his autonomic immune response. Wim was able to raise his cortisol levels and lower his blood concentrations of cytokines (inflammatory mediators) using solely his meditation and prep techniques. Reid Hoffman (@reidhoffman) is often referred to as "The Oracle of Silicon Valley" by tech insiders, who look at his company-building and investing track record (Facebook, Airbnb, Flickr, etc.) with awe.
