Yet somehow, it felt like it wasn’t enough. She began to realize that at the end of her long days at the office, often seeing more than 30 patients each day, something didn’t feel right. She was diagnosing more patients with devastating cancers, and seeing more patients with anxiety and depression at all ages. This inspired her to refocus her approach to find preventative care opportunities in almost every patient visit, but it has not been easy within our current health care system. Dr. Maryam Zeineddin was born in Tehran, Iran and lived in Athens, London and Stockholm prior to moving to Vancouver. She attended UBC and completed her B.Sc. in honours physiology. Her passion for medicine led to volunteering in Honduras with the Canadian Development Agency at a children's hospital. This experience became one of the deciding factors for Dr. Zeineddin to become a physician. During her medical school years at UBC, she took advantage of travelling, volunteering and playing intramural sports such as ice hockey. Dr. Zeineddin completed two years of family practice residency at the St. Paul's UBC program, and started her family practice the day after the completion of her residency program. Together with her friend and classmate Dr. Nicole Barre, she built and currently manages Ambleside Medical Centre (AMC) with fantastic doctors and staff. Their mission at AMC is to provide the most comprehensive patient-centered care, with preventative health measures as the key element of healthy living. Dr. Zeineddin has a full practice with interest in all facets of family practice, including preventative health and lifestyle counselling. She is an avid teacher and clinical instructor for UBC family practice residency programs, has been faculty for the UBC Coastal program, and continues to present and teach to medical students and residents of UBC. She is in love and married to a local West Vancouver dentist and, together with their two children, they enjoy skiing, biking, playing tennis and socializing with friends and family. Dr Zeineddin’s new obsession is road biking and improving her Gran Fondo time, and enjoying every moment of doubles tennis. Her new formula for healthy living is to exercise in the early mornings, then journal her gratitude with a nice cup of coffee before her children get up. Her goal is to become more “zen and mindful”, and savour life's moments. Ironically, embracing uncertainty as part of our evolution can be what fulfills us the most. The quest for certainty gets us into trouble, for we may fear uncertainty and that fear can box us in emotionally, mentally and spiritually. As we embrace uncertainty it can be a gift leading us to practice trust and openness. Trust melts away fear and invites in love. Without some darkness we’d have no real work to do. Uncertainty allows for heroic effort, pioneering action and distinct human achievement. This condition that we tend to dislike, regret, bemoan and even fear may ironically be the thing that allows us to do and become all that we most admire. Uncertainty can connect us to faith, in the absence of uncertainty there would be no faith. Uncertainty supports us to engage in the unknown and open ourselves up to our potential. Intentional living is about creating and designing a life you love vs. living life by default. In school we were taught to follow instructions. Many of us did not have the gift (often until later in life) to be taught that what we think, say and do on a daily basis is creating our reality one moment at a time. Nousha shares her experience as a young girl thinking life just happened to her and later learned the truth that life is happening for her and she is a co-creator that is actually in the drivers seat. The Universe, God, Source, this larger intelligence that has the seasons change, the tides go in and out is her partner in co-creation. Through the power of her intentions she is giving this larger intelligence the order for what she desires to create in her life. This was an empowering discovery for Nousha; however, she was stuck in the daily swamp of her thoughts. Nousha shares that we have anywhere from 25,000-50,000 thoughts/day! That is 17-35 thoughts per minute! This steady stream of thinking creates a thick filter between your head and your heart, your thoughts and your feelings. The good news is that intentional living integrates your thoughts and your feelings, your head and your heart to create a point of focus and attraction supporting you to focus what you think, what you say and what you do in the direction of what you want. Hear about Nousha’s personal experience enjoying a happy childhood as a little girl filled with energy, vitality and surrounded with love. As life progressed and she became an adult, different life circumstances dimmed her light. Despite this, Nousha looked for ways she could be vibrant and maintain her bright light from the inside out. Over the years, she picked up tools and resources that she looks forward to sharing with you over the weeks and months to come. You can look for updates at www.noushabehbahanian.com She shares one particularly difficult life circumstance, her father being diagnosed with MS - Multiple Sclerosis - and being put on drugs for his condition. The doctors Nousha’s father was seeing at the time treated him with disease modifying drugs. They are called disease modifying drugs because they slow down the progression of MS and prevent relapses; however, the drugs work by suppressing the immune system so that is does not attack the protective coating (myelin) surrounding the nerves. The most common side effects included: diarrhea, abnormal liver tests, nausea and hair loss. As the years passed, Nousha saw her father’s health deteriorate as he started to live too short and die too long, right before her eyes. She knew in her heart and soul that there was a better way, our destiny is not to live in this way; there must be a way for her father’s health to be renewed so he could once again enjoy a vibrant life. As she shares her story, she is touched, move and inspired by how she transformed this challenge into a gift to go deeper and uncover some truths about what optimum health really means. She discovered that optimum health happens on five levels: physical health, emotional health, mental health, spiritual health and financial health. We often only focus on our physical and financial health forgetting about our emotional or mental health. In the absence of nourishing, protecting and renewing our emotional and mental health over the long term, our bodies respond with long standing dis-ease, a disease. Degenerative diseases are lifestyle diseases, the field of functional medicine addresses the root causes of disease based on our lifestyle. In 2013, Nousha decided to create a movement to share what she learned watching her father’s health improve and founded Team Living Legacy at www.teamlivinglegacy.com. Too often, we leave life leaving a legacy and Nousha’s philosophy is that we are actually living legacies. Everything we think, say and do is making a difference whether we are aware of it or not.
