There was a festive vibe at the New Plymouth Community Foodbank's Christmas Drive this week with many volunteers in seasonal costume and holiday tunes blaring out over loudspeakers. But that couldn't mask the impact of the rising cost of living, which has caused demand for food parcels in the city to triple in recent times. They are on the latest Celtic Christmas Playlist-Christmas Driving Music. HOLIDAY FEATURE: Abbots Cross Pair up two experienced musicians who enjoy Celtic music and what do you get? Well, in this case, you get Abbots Cross! One half of this duo is Alan Booth, who plays guitar, fiddle, and provides the vocals for the group. Alan comes from a musical family and has been steeped in it all his life, starting with piano at the tender age of five, and having two music teachers for parents. He even does musical volunteer work in the Pittsburgh area where he's from—and has traveled all the way to Kenya to share his deep love of singing and playing instruments.  The second half of this duo is Mike Clancy, who provides the percussion, as well as the Irish flute and whistles to the mix. Also a seasoned musician, he has performed for several of the Broadway shows that have traveled to Pittsburgh. Mike plays with several bands in addition to Abbots Cross, and has even created original jazz compositions and released them to CD himself.  It's easy to see how the blending of these two men would provide the foundation for a solid band, and they do come together well to highlight their considerable talents! The holiday album, “Christmas Visions” is a 10-track offering that has such interesting arrangements—and they are deftly played. Clancy's flute takes center stage in many of these tracks, and it just adds so much to the music. In particular, God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen is just fantastic. These guys know how to stay true to the spirit of a holiday song while experimenting with what you can do with the music. Everything on this album has a very natural, free-flowing feel to it. It's as if the arrangements are loose and the two musicians just get in the groove and have a good time pushing their abilities. A veritable Christmas “jam session”! Don't miss Si Bheag, Si Mhor / The First Noel. It's hauntingly beautiful, beginning with the flute and then picking up the guitar gently in the background. This track builds slowly and easily with a warmth and genuineness that is very pleasing. Deck the Halls is happy and cheery as it should be, but also paired with a Christmas Eve Reel, adding that Celtic flavor and appeal.  This holiday compilation by Abbots Cross is a real treat, and a standout among the many Christmas albums. HOLIDAY FEATURE: Matt & Shannon Heaton One of the lovely things about Celtic music is the fact that just a couple of people can make a whole lot of music, and this is certainly true when it comes to Matt & Shannon Heaton. This music duo offers flute/guitar/bouzouki and sweet, sweet harmony vocals in arrangements that are quite lovely.  Deeply involved in the Boston traditional music scene, the pair plays together seamlessly, and the enthusiasm that they have for the music really comes through. There's a genuineness that is unmistakeable grounding their play. A husband and wife team can certainly telegraph their collective love for the music--and the sheer fun they have playing together. This one does it better than most.  The two are definitely experienced, and surround themselves with music in many different ways. Shannon has her own podcast, Irish Music Stories, and she's also the co-founder of Boston's Celtic music fest, which undoubtedly expanded her vision and abilities in the field.  Matt is front man for another band, the "surf-rock" Electric Heaters, and performs with a wide range of bands and musicians when he's not playing with Shannon. Each an accomplished musician in their own right, the blend of the two is a true celebration of musical talent—dosed with a wholesome affection for the Celtic sound. It's a pleasure to hear them play. The couple's Christmas song collection is filled with a little bit of everything. You'll find fresh holiday fare as well as traditional favorites like “O Little Town of Bethlehem” and “It Came Upon the Midnight Clear” to sing along to. Now, we also have Cyber Monday. These are two days when people open up their wallets and many businesses offer HUGE discounts. I confess I am very torn by those holidays. On the one hand, I have my own business. CD sales are still one of the big ways I make money. My Patreon needs to be twice what it is for me to remove my dependence on CD and merch sales. On the other hand is consumerism. We create so much waste. I'm not even gonna go into what that waste does to our environment and its effect on climate change. One of the things I love about the new digital revolution is I can potentially create music and make a living without adding to the waste. One day I hope to sell out all my CDs. Then I will just release them on a limited basis, for those who truly love the media. My storage shelves will be mostly empty. The Christmas holiday doesn't help. It's all about spending. It bothered me a lot more back in the 90s when I first heard about Buy Nothing Day. That day was created in response to the consumerism. It's on the very same day as Black Friday. "Don't buy" is the message. Back around 2001, it became possible to accept credit cards at gigs. But at the time, I was $15K in debt. All because of MY irresponsible use of credit cards. It got me questioning. Should I accept credit card payments...and potentially have you, my customer, go into debt because of my products? Eventually, I decided you should be responsible for yourself. But at the same time is that cop out? This is one of those ethical dilemmas. I was talking recently with people about ethics in healthcare. The question was raised: should a parent have full control of their child's healthcare? Do they know what's best for their child? The quick answer is yes. I know what's best for my daughters. But that comes from my privileged, fairly healthy family background. A parent who is strung out on drugs, sick, or poor or in abusive relationship. They might not be healthy enough to do what is best for their child. There are so many nuances. There isn't one right answer. It's each different for each person. My biggest complaint with corporations is that in order to be successful, they need to do what will make the most-profit for their business. That sounds reasonable. They should be allowed to make money freely, without government interference. That is until you realize that they can dump sewage into our water, poison our air, and destroy our environment. They can murder people and not be culpable. Because they are a business. The actions of the business will not financially impact the owners of that business. Reminds of McDonalds: "Would you like to Supersize that?" That phrase made them boatloads of money. The cost was the increased obesity of their customers. It took regulations to stop them from using that simple sales phrase. Sure it made them more money. But was it ethical? We are all manipulated by businesses trying to make a buck. That's why Black Friday changed from businesses saying, "Huh. We get a lot more sales on the day after Thanksgiving" to "Let's capitalize on that and start a holiday!" I decided not to do a Black Friday sale this year. I thought about it. And I plan to put together a sale on my website soon. I'm not abandoning sales altogether. But I'm torn. If nothing else, I think it's important to think about what's right. The ethics of sales. Just because you think it's fine. Doesn't mean it's ethically right. It could be. But think about it. This year's Christmas Drive is hoping to reach new heights in 2021 to help the vulnerable women and children in our region this festive season. Julie from the Mackay Women's Centre, who the hampers will go to, has given us an update on how we're going two weeks in.

Abigail and Mia from Marian State School told Sam and Kaley about their efforts putting together hampers for this year's Christmas Drive to help Mackay Women's Services with the help of their school community.

On this drive I defend Christmas, and do a topical opinion piece on the Christmas controversy. I talk about the PC culture and how the term "Christmas" has now become a politcally incorrect/offensive term for some, and is completely demonized as "satans holiday" by others, and yet despiite this, the cultural holiday unique to the west is still loved and appreciated by many in their own unique way. Including Me.
