There was a festive vibe at the New Plymouth Community Foodbank's Christmas Drive this week with many volunteers in seasonal costume and holiday tunes blaring out over loudspeakers. But that couldn't mask the impact of the rising cost of living, which has caused demand for food parcels in the city to triple in recent times. Taranaki Whanganui reporter Robin Martin tagged along.

Christmas is a coming in 2022 with Triskele and the Celtic Christmas Podcast #64. Subscribe at CelticChristmasPodcast.com. Music from We Banjo 3, Reilly, Caitríona O'Leary, Triskele, The Barra MacNeils Welcome to the Celtic Christmas Podcast I am Marc Gunn. I am a musician and podcaster. We are promoting Celtic culture through Christmas cheer. I'm working on another new format for this show in 2022. Galway-based We Banjo 3 has one foot in Irish music and one foot in Americana music, seamlessly combining the virtuosity and precision in each genre's traditional disciplines with the artful song-craft and infectious live performance of today's musical landscape. This is their 10th year performing together to thousands of fans at Irish and Bluegrass festivals. Their latest album is called Open the Road. And I'm happy I looked up that information because I can also add it to the Irish & Celtic Music Podcast that I host. 0:53 - We Banjo 3 "Joy to the World" from A Winter Wonderful 3:40 - THANK YOU CHRISTMAS PATRONS The Celtic Christmas Podcast is brought to you by the kindness of Celtic Christmas fans on Patreon. Your generosity funds the creation, promotion, and production of the show. Join others to spread Christmas Cheer this holiday season! Sign up for as little as $1 per episode on Patreon. Winners of the folk rock/Celtic band of the year award by Wisconsin Area Music Industry for 2019 and 2015, Reilly have garnered a reputation for being an interactive, get-off-your-chair act. The band's circuit continues to grow along with their reputation for being a highly respected professional group. National programs such as Good Morning Ireland, Blarney on the Air, and Paddyrock internet radio have featured Reilly. Celtic Radio Music Network rates them as five out of five stars. Their ability to adapt Celtic music to an American rock audience, and include unexpected rock favorites into their set, makes them the perfect eclectic choice in today's watered down and predictable Celtic scene. Their latest album is called Durty Pool. You can find it on their Bandcamp page. 4:47 - Reilly "For You On Christmas" from Kick Ass Celtic Christmas 8:13 - PLAYLIST: Christmas Drive There a number of Celtic Christmas playlists that I published on Spotify. The Christmas Drive playlist is Christmas music you will enjoy while taking a holiday drive to see your family or friends. The Wexford Carols is a 2014 album of traditional Irish carols by Caitríona O'Leary featuring guest singers Tom Jones, Rosanne Cash and Carolina Chocolate Drops singer Rhiannon Giddens and more. The album went to No.1 on the Billboard World Albums Chart. 8:52 - Caitríona O'Leary "Tell Shepherds" from The Wexford Carols 15:16 - HOLIDAY FEATURE: Triskele Triskele, [pronounced Tris-Kay-lee] is the premier all~female Celtic band out of Albany NY. They are known for their stunning harmonies, singing in the Gaelic language and for their Irish wit. Noeleen, who grew up in Dublin and is the youngest of 16, taught Sharon and Jenn the Gaelic language through song. These ladies perform, primarily, traditional Celtic/Irish music, but also have written originals. Triskele not only revitalizes the Gaelic language, but weaves history and traditions about growing up in Ireland. This gives the listener a deeper appreciation and understanding of Irish/Celtic history. Triskele stands out in a Celtic music world dominated by men. They have gained fans and supporters with their ability to keep traditional songs traditional. Fans have stated that they enjoy hearing songs sung with the unique qualities of the female voice; given the timbre and rich, clear harmonies. I'm particularly smitten with their byline–Celtic Trad. with a Women's Touch Their song “Christmas Is a Comin'” is a new addition to the Celtic Christmas music world. But I'll let them tell you more about it. 16:24 - STORY OF CHRISTMAS IS A COMIN' 18:02 - Triskele “Christmas Is A Comin'” from Christmas Is A Comin' Do you have a Christmas story to share? Drop me an email. Include a picture for our shownotes. 19:57 - WHAT'S YOUR FAVORITE CELTIC CHRISTMAS SONG IN THIS EPISODE? Make sure you add the song to your own Celtic music playlist or even better, support the artist by buying their music and joining their mailing list, or even joining their Patreon page. Several have that as well. There's another way to share your favorite track in this episode. You can vote for your favorite song or tune when you join us on Patreon. The most-popular track will be added to our Christmas playlists. You have just two weeks to vote. So… Cast your vote for the Celtic Christmas Favorite song. Then let me know if there's a Celtic Christmas song or tune that I should add to the next episode of the show. For more than three decades, Cape Breton-based family group the Barra MacNeils has been thrilling audiences of all ages, near and far, with their sparkling repertoire, vocals, instrumental prowess and vibrant showmanship. They are Canada's Celtic ambassadors! Their Christmas album is currently available on vinyl. You'll also find a wooden tree ornament in their store along with all of their albums. 21:22 - The Barra MacNeils "Party In Washabuckt" from The Christmas Album What did you think of this week's show? It's a Celtic Christmas jam session with Abbots Cross today as we spread Christmas Cheer. It's Celtic Christmas Podcast #62. Subscribe at CelticChristmasPodcast.com. WELCOME TO THE CELTIC CHRISTMAS PODCAST AND PLAYLIST I am Marc Gunn. I am a Celtic musician and I love Christmas music. This podcast is funded by people just like you on Patreon. Your generosity funds the creation, promotion, and production of the podcast and our companion playlist. You'll find a link to that playlist, and the artist, in the shownotes. As a patron, you also get an extended podcast of each playlist. The music podcast version is exclusive to Patreon. Sign up for as little as $1 per episode on Patreon to spread Christmas Cheer today! FEATURED PLAYLIST: Christmas Driving Music Our latest playlist features music that is perfect for a Christmas Drive. Gather up your presents. Hop in the car. Let's go for a drive to visit family and friends with this delightful playlist of Celtic Christmas music for driving down the road. Listen to Christmas Driving now on Spotify. “God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen / Pathways / The Kesh” by Abbots Cross from Christmas Visions That was from today's special holiday guest–Abbots Cross. They are on the latest Celtic Christmas Playlist-Christmas Driving Music. HOLIDAY FEATURE: Abbots Cross Pair up two experienced musicians who enjoy Celtic music and what do you get? Well, in this case, you get Abbots Cross! One half of this duo is Alan Booth, who plays guitar, fiddle, and provides the vocals for the group. Alan comes from a musical family and has been steeped in it all his life, starting with piano at the tender age of five, and having two music teachers for parents. He even does musical volunteer work in the Pittsburgh area where he's from—and has traveled all the way to Kenya to share his deep love of singing and playing instruments. The second half of this duo is Mike Clancy, who provides the percussion, as well as the Irish flute and whistles to the mix. Also a seasoned musician, he has performed for several of the Broadway shows that have traveled to Pittsburgh. Mike plays with several bands in addition to Abbots Cross, and has even created original jazz compositions and released them to CD himself. It's easy to see how the blending of these two men would provide the foundation for a solid band, and they do come together well to highlight their considerable talents! The holiday album, “Christmas Visions” is a 10-track offering that has such interesting arrangements—and they are deftly played. Clancy's flute takes center stage in many of these tracks, and it just adds so much to the music. In particular, God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen is just fantastic. These guys know how to stay true to the spirit of a holiday song while experimenting with what you can do with the music. Everything on this album has a very natural, free-flowing feel to it. It's as if the arrangements are loose and the two musicians just get in the groove and have a good time pushing their abilities. A veritable Christmas “jam session”! Don't miss Si Bheag, Si Mhor / The First Noel. It's hauntingly beautiful, beginning with the flute and then picking up the guitar gently in the background. This track builds slowly and easily with a warmth and genuineness that is very pleasing. Deck the Halls is happy and cheery as it should be, but also paired with a Christmas Eve Reel, adding that Celtic flavor and appeal. This holiday compilation by Abbots Cross is a real treat, and a standout among the many Christmas albums. Don't miss the chance to add something different to your collection of Celtic music that will help you get into the mood for celebrating! “Si Bheag, Si Mhor/The First Noel” by Abbots Cross from Christmas Visions IF YOU ENJOY THIS ARTIST... Follow them on streaming and add one of their songs to your playlist. You can also buy music from them, sign up to their mailing list and share this episode on social media. But with nearing 800,000 deaths due to covid, I thought we'd also pay tribute to all the people who fought and continue to fight for their lives whether from war torn nations or bravely working in healthcare, or the day-to-day concerns about a dreadful virus that has impacted so many people. Mary added later: "Hi again Marc, My daughter got to see a wonderful show a few years ago. It's called "A Celtic Christmas" By Tomáseen Foley. It is a wonderful story! You should check it out." Ken emailed: "Hey there Marc. I came across your podcast by accident. I became a member and am in the process of shifting through the treasure trove of music and information that is part of your podcast. I heard on the first podcast I opened that you are a musician. that became obvious when I went through the information and saw the CD that you have made available for sale. Now, do not get me wrong, I am going to ask a stupid question. How do you make your money to support the undertaking you have embarked upon since (2008??). Second, do you go on podcast sponsored trips to listen to this music; or do you rely on bands sending in demo's. I am not a musician at all. I just love music. Have taken a fancy to Celtic music as I like the heritage. Will plan on visiting the Emerald Isle some time before I pass. Can listen to Celtic Music just as much as Country music, New Wave, Classical, etc. All depending upon the mood. Thank you for your time and Take care of yourself"

HOLIDAY FEATURE: Matt & Shannon Heaton One of the lovely things about Celtic music is the fact that just a couple of people can make a whole lot of music, and this is certainly true when it comes to Matt & Shannon Heaton. This music duo offers flute/guitar/bouzouki and sweet, sweet harmony vocals in arrangements that are quite lovely. Deeply involved in the Boston traditional music scene, the pair plays together seamlessly, and the enthusiasm that they have for the music really comes through. There's a genuineness that is unmistakeable grounding their play. A husband and wife team can certainly telegraph their collective love for the music--and the sheer fun they have playing together. This one does it better than most. The two are definitely experienced, and surround themselves with music in many different ways. Shannon has her own podcast, Irish Music Stories, and she's also the co-founder of Boston's Celtic music fest, which undoubtedly expanded her vision and abilities in the field. Matt is front man for another band, the "surf-rock" Electric Heaters, and performs with a wide range of bands and musicians when he's not playing with Shannon. Each an accomplished musician in their own right, the blend of the two is a true celebration of musical talent—dosed with a wholesome affection for the Celtic sound. It's a pleasure to hear them play. The couple's Christmas song collection is filled with a little bit of everything. You'll find fresh holiday fare as well as traditional favorites like “O Little Town of Bethlehem” and “It Came Upon the Midnight Clear” to sing along to. Irish music lovers will appreciate the jigs and reels that are included in the mixture, and there's certainly enough here to fill a holiday party to the brim with some good cheer. Don't miss “Julius the Christmas Cat”—it couldn't be any sweeter, and is sure to be a favorite for those who love their feline friends. Nothing like a cute little "story song" to get in the holiday spirit! Other notable tracks in this collection include “Christmas in Mt. Horeb” and “Wexford Carol,” but there really isn't a bad track on the compilation. There's 13 tracks offered here, and listeners who love the flute will really be pleased, as it appears often on these tracks. Soft harmonies and easy strumming on the guitar are other hallmarks of what this holiday album is all about. There's little doubt this will have a place in any rotation of Christmas music where an updated Celtic sound is welcomed. You can find out more about them at https://mattandshannonheaton.com/ IF YOU ENJOY THIS ARTIST... Follow them on streaming and add one of their songs to your playlist. Greetings Gunn Runner Is Black Friday an ethical holiday? Overcoming fear is the theme of a new song inspired by the hobbit. Top 10 songs on Spotify. Now, we also have Cyber Monday. These are two days when people open up their wallets and many businesses offer HUGE discounts. I confess I am very torn by those holidays. On the one hand, I have my own business. CD sales are still one of the big ways I make money. My Patreon needs to be twice what it is for me to remove my dependence on CD and merch sales. On the other hand is consumerism. We create so much waste. I'm not even gonna go into what that waste does to our environment and its effect on climate change. One of the things I love about the new digital revolution is I can potentially create music and make a living without adding to the waste. One day I hope to sell out all my CDs. Then I will just release them on a limited basis, for those who truly love the media. My storage shelves will be mostly empty. The Christmas holiday doesn't help. It's all about spending. It bothered me a lot more back in the 90s when I first heard about Buy Nothing Day. That day was created in response to the consumerism. It's on the very same day as Black Friday. "Don't buy" is the message. Back around 2001, it became possible to accept credit cards at gigs. But at the time, I was $15K in debt. All because of MY irresponsible use of credit cards. It got me questioning. Should I accept credit card payments...and potentially have you, my customer, go into debt because of my products? Eventually, I decided you should be responsible for yourself. But at the same time is that cop out? This is one of those ethical dilemmas. I was talking recently with people about ethics in healthcare. The question was raised: should a parent have full control of their child's healthcare? Do they know what's best for their child? The quick answer is yes. I know what's best for my daughters. But that comes from my privileged, fairly healthy family background. A parent who is strung out on drugs, sick, or poor or in abusive relationship. They might not be healthy enough to do what is best for their child. There are so many nuances. There isn't one right answer. It's each different for each person. My biggest complaint with corporations is that in order to be successful, they need to do what will make the most-profit for their business. That sounds reasonable. They should be allowed to make money freely, without government interference. That is until you realize that they can dump sewage into our water, poison our air, and destroy our environment. They can murder people and not be culpable. Because they are a business. The actions of the business will not financially impact the owners of that business. Reminds of McDonalds: "Would you like to Supersize that?" That phrase made them boatloads of money. The cost was the increased obesity of their customers. It took regulations to stop them from using that simple sales phrase. Sure it made them more money. But was it ethical? We are all manipulated by businesses trying to make a buck. That's why Black Friday changed from businesses saying, "Huh. We get a lot more sales on the day after Thanksgiving" to "Let's capitalize on that and start a holiday!" I decided not to do a Black Friday sale this year. I thought about it. And I plan to put together a sale on my website soon. I'm not abandoning sales altogether. But I'm torn. If nothing else, I think it's important to think about what's right. The ethics of sales. Just because you think it's fine. Doesn't mean it's ethically right. It could be. But think about it. On this drive I defend Christmas, and do a topical opinion piece on the Christmas controversy. I talk about the PC culture and how the term "Christmas" has now become a politcally incorrect/offensive term for some, and is completely demonized as "satans holiday" by others, and yet despiite this, the cultural holiday unique to the west is still loved and appreciated by many in their own unique way. Including Me. I share a few personal stories, and some ideas I have come across about the origins of christmas, and chat about the variety of different cultures that celebrate the same time of year with differing mytholgies and slightly different dates, and how many of the core ideas central to this european tradition are unique in some aspects, and fairly universal in others. I will soon do a podcast episode covering this subject in a more detailed manner, but this is just a fun look at my personal take on the holiday that I have loved since I was a little dude.
