How can public sector strikes be solved more effectively?

Public services have faced the greatest level of disruption from strikes in more than a quarter of a century. Over the past year nurses, ambulance drivers, teachers, junior doctors, consultants, and civil servants, among others, have all staged walkouts to protest against pay and working conditions. While improved pay offers from Rishi Sunak's government have resolved many disputes, some staff are still on the picket line and other disputes could flare up again. So what impact has recent industrial disputes had on public service performance? What skills do ministers, civil servants, frontline public sector leaders and unions need to effectively negotiate with each other and resolve disputes – and what mechanisms can be used to resolve entrenched disputes? How effective are pay review bodies and do they need to be reformed? And to what extent will the Strikes (Minimum Service Levels) Act help or hinder the management of industrial dispute? To discuss these questions and more, we were joined by an expert panel, including: Mike Clancy, General Secretary at Prospect Baroness Finn, former Government Adviser on Industrial Relations Raj Jethwa, Chief Executive at UCEA Kate Nowicki, Director of Dispute Resolution at Acas The event was chaired by Nick Davies, Programme Director at the Institute for Government.

Internationally acclaimed, Pulitzer Prize nominated, and local author and filmmaker, Michael A. Allen, uses the metaphor of the sea, and its ebb and flow, to describe the Tao of life's cycle. And, he discovers within this unique reflection a new way to comfort and heal the Self from the trauma of death. Michael was inspired to write his book Tao of Surfing: Finding Depth at Low Tide after his lifelong best friend and surfing partner suddenly came out as gay and died from AIDS in 1989.    The book subsequently became the basis for the soon-to-be-released feature film, A Long Road to Tao, which Michael co-wrote and produced. Michael Allen will be joined in this interview by A Long Road to Tao cast member and fellow surfer, Mike Clancy, to discuss the book, the making of the film, the politics surrounding the AIDS crisis of the 1980s, and how the film relates to political issues facing the LGBTQ community today. Interview Guest (picture attached): Michael A Allen: Internationally acclaimed, and Pulitzer Prize nominated author Michael A Allen, hold a Master's degree in Philosophy and Certificate and Asian Studies from California State University at Long Beach, and is a member of the Phi Sigma Tau Philosophy Honor Society. He also presented “The Application of Taoist Principles in Everyday Living” at University of Hawaii's International Society for Chinese Philosophy Conference. It's really something to listen to Jen Psaki, or Nancy Peolsi or Joe Biden pretend they don't know how bad the economy is.  It's even more impressive when they suggest they know who and what's to blame.  Most of all, they're sure you – the voter – don't hold them responsible.  That is, if there's a problem.  Which they're not certain there is.  Confused?  Stigall explains. Former Trump Treasury official Michael Faulkender describes and ecplains the policy making that's sending our economy into the red.  Does your school have a Satanic Club?  They do in York, PA of all places – and Washington Times opinion editor Cheryl Chumley adcknowledges they have a constitutional right to exist in our schools.  But is there a moral case to be made?  And we cover hot congressional races across the country heading into primary season.  From VA-10 – meet one of the primary candidates running – Mike Clancy.

Listen to Christmas Driving now on Spotify. “God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen / Pathways / The Kesh” by Abbots Cross from Christmas Visions That was from today's special holiday guest–Abbots Cross. They are on the latest Celtic Christmas Playlist-Christmas Driving Music. HOLIDAY FEATURE: Abbots Cross Pair up two experienced musicians who enjoy Celtic music and what do you get? Well, in this case, you get Abbots Cross! One half of this duo is Alan Booth, who plays guitar, fiddle, and provides the vocals for the group. Alan comes from a musical family and has been steeped in it all his life, starting with piano at the tender age of five, and having two music teachers for parents. He even does musical volunteer work in the Pittsburgh area where he's from—and has traveled all the way to Kenya to share his deep love of singing and playing instruments.  The second half of this duo is Mike Clancy, who provides the percussion, as well as the Irish flute and whistles to the mix. Also a seasoned musician, he has performed for several of the Broadway shows that have traveled to Pittsburgh. Mike plays with several bands in addition to Abbots Cross, and has even created original jazz compositions and released them to CD himself.  It's easy to see how the blending of these two men would provide the foundation for a solid band, and they do come together well to highlight their considerable talents! The holiday album, “Christmas Visions” is a 10-track offering that has such interesting arrangements—and they are deftly played. Clancy's flute takes center stage in many of these tracks, and it just adds so much to the music. In particular, God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen is just fantastic. These guys know how to stay true to the spirit of a holiday song while experimenting with what you can do with the music. Everything on this album has a very natural, free-flowing feel to it. It's as if the arrangements are loose and the two musicians just get in the groove and have a good time pushing their abilities. A veritable Christmas “jam session”! Don't miss Si Bheag, Si Mhor / The First Noel. It's hauntingly beautiful, beginning with the flute and then picking up the guitar gently in the background. This track builds slowly and easily with a warmth and genuineness that is very pleasing. Deck the Halls is happy and cheery as it should be, but also paired with a Christmas Eve Reel, adding that Celtic flavor and appeal.  This holiday compilation by Abbots Cross is a real treat, and a standout among the many Christmas albums. Don't miss the chance to add something different to your collection of Celtic music that will help you get into the mood for celebrating!  “Si Bheag, Si Mhor/The First Noel” by Abbots Cross from Christmas Visions   IF YOU ENJOY THIS ARTIST... This podcast is by far the most intense and incredible that I've recorded to date.  I had no idea about Mike's story when we sat down, but I quickly realized Mike's life has been incredible.  Mike Clancy served as a Force Recon Marine for 8 years and GRS (global response staff) for 4 years.  He did 13 total tours in Iraq and Afghanistan including the initial invasion into Iraq.  3 were combat tours as a Marine, and 10 were tours working for the CIA.  On the podcast Mike talks about the invasion and how quiet it was until all of a sudden they were caught by surprise from an attack in which they sustained the first casualty of the war.  From there Mike shares how intense the fighting was and how hard the conditions were.  In addition to his amazing and difficult time as a Marine, Mike's childhood and homelife was even more chaotic.  Mike grew up in a home that was unstable to say the least.  He talks about his dad who was trafficking drugs, the number of times he moved, and his difficulties as a lanky white kid in mostly black gang areas.  After the war Mike was stuggling to find himself and find peace.   Amazingly Mike had the opportunity to purge his demons through several Ayahuasca ceremonies.  He talks a lot about how good this experience was for him and how beneficial it could be for anyone struggling with issues from their past.  Currently Mike works for Black Rifle Coffee, enjoys practicing Ju Jitsu, and hunting.  Mike is one of the nicest people I've met and I found his stories and life incredible.  Instagram@fancy_schmancy_clancywww.montanaknifecompany.comInstagram@montanaknifecompany@joshsmithknives

In this episode, we talk with Dan Garcia, a teaching professor at UC Berkeley in the EECS Department. He was selected as an ACM Distinguished Educator in 2012 and ACM Distinguished Speaker in 2019. He has won all four of his department's computer science teaching awards. Our conversation focused on designing exams, which he boiled down to his five-finger rule: (1) material coverage, (2) reasonable time, (3) range of difficulty, (4) variety of question types, and (5) ease of grading. His “something awesome in computer science” highlighted his mentors Mike Clancy and Brian Harvey, who are both emeritus teaching professors at UC Berkeley. Mike taught him about having a variety of question types on his exams. While Brian taught Dan his philosophy about grades and grading in general. Dan's Too Long; Didn't Listen (TL; DL) summarized this five-finger rule into an excellent short sound bite.
