Today, I'm talking with Aimee Byrd—an author who often pushes us to question norms we usually take for granted. If you've ever felt the pressure to put on a mask or hide parts of who you really are, you'll find this conversation meaningful. In her latest book, "Saving Face," Aimee dives into the masks we all wear, the ways we conceal ourselves, and what it takes to discover our authentic selves underneath it all. We'll unpack some thoughtful questions: What stories do our faces reveal? What changes when we drop the act and allow ourselves to be seen? Aimee shares honestly from her experiences with spiritual abuse, theological reflection, and her personal journey toward healing and authenticity. We also discuss journaling, encountering Jesus in surprising moments, and why truly seeing each other might hold answers for a deeply divided society. If you're navigating issues of faith, identity, or just interested in genuine connection, I think you'll find this episode insightful and practical. Let's get into it—this is about what it means to save face by choosing to show our real faces.Aimee Byrd is author, speaker, blogger, podcaster and former coffee shop owner. Harvest USA Report with Howard Hale

Welcome to the Harvest USA Report. I'm Brian Hale. An original production of Howard Hale Broadcasting, now expanded throughout North America. The Harvest USA Report is brought to you by Hale Multimedia, the company behind Cattleman's Corner. Here's Custom Harvester David Meisner to tell us more about the U.S. Custom Harvesters. That's a pretty big organization isn't it?  "Yeah that's right, we've got membership all the way across the United States and even in other countries." And the Custom Harvester's annual convention just got over what at the end of February was it?  "Actually the end of January is when it was and yes and we had a good turnout in Des Moines and pleased with all the attendance that we had from our regular membership as well as our vendors and machinery manufacturers for instance like Krohn. Yes, Mr. Krohn was there in attendance himself, very nice, I mean can you even say you know, like Claas. Mrs. Claas has been there the past two years being there in attendance too and that's just really nice to have those individuals, and they recognize who the U.S. Custom Harvester Association is and the importance of it for the nation." That was Oklahoma Custom Harvester David Meisner. That's going to do it for today's Harvest USA report. Thanks again for listening and may God bless, I'm Brian Hale.

The Harvest USA Report has been on the air for 30 years. It was 1994 when Greg Erlich of the U.S. Custom Harvesters approached KSIR Radio in Fort Morgan, Colorado. It was a great idea and it's lasted 30 years and still going strong. Despite Howard passing away in 2023, the program continues with yours truly. However, times have changed. People aren't answering the phone like they used to with all of the scam callers, so if you have some harvest information, we would appreciate a phone call here at the Harvest USA Report. We'll answer the phone. If you are a farmer, a harvester, a custom harvester, please give us a call at the Harvest USA Report and let us know what information you have about what you're harvesting or what your activity is during the off-season. Many times we are in touch with folks from different continents about what they're harvesting, but folks still like to hear about what's going on right here in North America. And again, a special thanks to our friend and co-host David Woodruff from Alberta, Canada, who has been pitching in since Howard passed away interviewing folks for the Harvest USA Report. We appreciate David's service and look forward to more interesting interviews. Meanwhile, if you work in the agricultural world and you have information about harvesting crops that feed the world, give us a call at the Harvest USA Report. Have you ever felt (or currently feel) discouraged by the church? If so, you're not alone. In this episode, Matt chats with Aimee Byrd about this very issue. In her latest book, The Hope in Our Scars, Aimee offers insights on how to find hope, truth, and beauty for those who have grown disillusioned with the church. In an era when the modern church has become infatuated with power and intoxicated by celebrity culture -- leading many to abandon their faith altogether -- Aimee's voice of reason offers a better way: A way of finding hope in Christ. Drawing on a wealth of experience (most of which was very painful), she offers insightful and encouraging thoughts to those who are struggling to hold on. In today's culture, it's hard to find anyone who hasn't been impacted by sexual sin, either personally or in their family or social circles. Issues of pornography, transgenderism, and homosexuality are pervasive, yet many in the evangelical church do not feel equipped to face the challenges of sexual brokenness. James and Jonathan are joined today by Mark Sanders, the executive director of Harvest USA. Harvest brings the truth and mercy of Jesus Christ by helping individuals and families affected by sexual struggles and by providing resources that address biblical sexuality to individuals and churches. Over the years, as the rise of the internet, it's become much more of a broad discipleship ministry addressing any way that sin has affected our sexuality and our gender, and we're just seeing more and more the ways that the fall and denial of God as our creator is going in more and more directions with sin. So we want to continue to see how Scripture brings clarity on God's design but also brings clarity on the hope that we have in Christ. – Mark Sanders Harvest USA has always been an important ministry, but it is becoming increasingly vital in today's culture. Tune in to hear more, and check out their website to see what resources are available, including two new online courses, “Raising Sexually Faithful Kids” and “Parenting Boys and Girls in a Gender-Confused World. The whole system seems to be out of order. It's time we reckon with the abuse, structure, and outworkings of church. But first, it's time to heal, to find hope even in the midst of our disillusionment. In this conversation, Aimee Byrd shares her story of disillusionment with the church after facing public shaming and harassment for writing a book critiquing certain theological teachings. She discusses the pain of this experience and her journey to healing, including finding community outside her church. Can the struggle of sexual brokenness be one's pathway to redemption? In this all-too-honest conversation, Mark Sanders of Harvest USA joins us in this conversation where he shares his personal faith journey, why he strived to overcome sexual brokenness, and how the gospel teachings and Christian values shaped him to be who he is now.He introduced the organization Harvest USA, rooted in the Presbyterian Church in America, and how it aligned with the principles of the book “Thank God for Bitcoin,” which discussed the common grounds of faith, finance, and economics. This serves as a jump-off for him to share his journey. As a filmmaker, he has a big love for movies and this great desire to get married, but it dawned on him how they turn out to be idolatry, redirecting his worship to something that can't satisfy him eternally and forgetting his relationship with God. He then touches on how media can impact one's life and why seeing everything through the Christian lens is important. As he shares his work in Harvest USA and what they offer to help people with sexual struggles, he gives his insights on the challenges of being a Christian in a secular society and how God's mercy continues to be evident even in these circumstances. There's so much to unpack in this episode as Mark discusses Christian stewardship, the reality of secularism, and why there's a need for healthy skepticism. So make sure to tune in to the whole episode! Here at TGFB, our mission is to educate and equip Christians to understand Bitcoin and harness its potential for good. The word pornography is rooted in the Greek word porneia, which means to practice prostitution, sexual immorality, or fornication. In the New Testament, the Apostle Paul frequently used this word in reference to any kind of sinful and illegitimate sexual activity. Our friends at the HarvestUSA ministry offer this helpful definition of pornography that's written from a biblical perspective: Pornography is anything that the heart uses to find sexual expression outside of God's intended design for relational intimacy. It is anything that tempts or corrupts the human heart into desiring sexual pleasure in sinful ways. Parents, we need to teach our kids that God has made sex for our good and his glory, but that we can only experience it in these ways when we stay within his purpose and his plan. Paul tells us that we are to flee from sexual immorality, or porneia. Talk to your kids about pornography, along with the dangers that come with indulging our good gift of sexuality in sinful ways.

Since this is Pride month, I'm spending this week sharing some words of wisdom from HarvestUSA's John Freeman, on how to remain faithful when others embrace lgbtq+ theology. John tells us to remember that these are spiritual issues. Ephesians chapter six reminds us that there are often forces, behind the scenes, invested in keeping those we love in confusion and error. Ultimately, only God can address the spiritual issues of family and friends' blindness and rebellion. If you constantly feel pressured to change others' views or make them see the light, you will likely end up frustrated and perhaps even begin to question your own beliefs. Those who walk in blindness need what Tim Keller calls a “self quake” and a “God quake.” God is the one who must intervene to change hearts. The gospel is the greatest need for those who pursue sexuality on their own terms—along with those who agree with them and buy into worldly sexuality. Thanks, John, for this helpful advice.

Since this is Pride month, I'm spending this week sharing some words of wisdom from HarvestUSA's John Freeman, on how to remain faithful when others embrace lgbtq+ theology. John tells us to Embrace the hurt and suffering that come with being misunderstood or seen as the bad guy. Even though you may attempt to engage with humility, understanding, and sincerity, you may still experience real, ongoing pain and heartache. When we see family or friends pursuing a destructive path contrary to God's will and his Word, we often feel powerless and hopeless. John has found that many Christians who eventually adopt the mentality of “gay is okay with me and with God” usually do so because they simply feel worn down and want to be thought well of by others. You may feel like you are alone in a desert, barely holding your own with your beliefs about God's Word—but know that Jesus is with you. He too was in those desert places as he obeyed the Father and stood on Scripture.

Since this is Pride month, I'd like to spend this week sharing some words of wisdom from HarvestUSA's John Freeman, on how to remain faithful when others embrace lgbtq+ theology. John tells us to expect misunderstanding and persecution. Our culture's man-centered theology is based on the heart's desires, where there are no absolutes and everything is relative. When we take a contrary position, we become a threat and affront to others. Nowhere is this more evident today than in the debate about sexuality and the Bible. Believing that God speaks clearly and authoritatively about sex and sexuality is supposedly bigoted, unloving, and socially incorrect. You may be viewed as the problem or the enemy. Don't let that shipwreck you! Expecting these responses and believing on Scripture's reliability guards you from dismay when people react against your lack of approval or enthusiasm. Thank you John, for these words of wisdom and for helping us remain firm in God's word.

Shame is hard. Shame around sex and sexuality is really hard. Some of us feel shame from our own sexual sin. Others of us feel shame from others who have sinned against us sexually. Some of us grew up in Christian households that didn't handle the topic of sex and sexuality well so we've experienced shame about sex even within the context of marriage. This is all hard. How do we develop a biblical view of sex and sexuality? How can we find healing and hope? Today, we're joined by Shalee Lehning. Shalee works on staff at Harvest USA, which is a biblically-based organization that works to help people of all different ages and backgrounds who deal with gender and sexuality issues. Shalee co-wrote a book with Ellen Dykas called “Sexual Faithfulness: Gospel-Infused, Practical Discipleship for Women”. There's also a FREE course on this topic with guides for leaders and participants. You can find all of this at harvestusa.org. Be sure to follow Harvest USA on Instagram (@harvestusa) for more helpful content. Here are some questions we covered in this interview:   What is shame? (6:16) Why is sex and sexuality in particular an area that is often surrounded by a lot of shame? (7:47) What is sex supposed to be like according to God's design? (11:42) One reason for shame surrounding sex is because of past or present sexual sin. How should we respond to this kind of shame? (15:57) Many people believe that if they sinned sexually that they are “damaged goods,” “unforgivable,” “undesirable,” etc. How would you respond to these ideas? (21:48) What encouragement or advice would you give to the person who has been violated sexually in some way and is struggling with shame? (26:19) A lot of believers who grew up in Christian circles struggle with shame surrounding sex even in the context of a monogamous, Christian marriage. Maybe it feels scary, dirty, or wrong. Why do you think that is? (30:46) How can someone who is experiencing this kind of sexual brokenness within their marriage find healing? (37:47) Maybe for someone listening, it is their spouse that is struggling with this kind of shame. How can a wife support her husband or a husband support his wife through these struggles, and how can they address their own insecurities that may arise from feeling unwanted or at fault for their spouse's struggles. (40:17) For those of us who have some kind of influence over kids (parents, teachers, sunday school volunteers, aunts and uncles, etc.), how can we approach the topic of sex in a way that helps them grow up with a healthy view of sex according to God's design? Youth Culture Today with Walt Mueller

All this week we've been looking at how to talk to our kids about the issue of pornography. My friend Nicholas Black, who helps people deal with sexual brokenness through his ministry at Harvest USA, offers these practical steps to take to help your kids flee from pornography. First, help them to honestly face the damage that pornography has done, while guiding them to hope in something better. When you truly see what porn has done to you, you can be compelled to change your habits. Help them to see that God has something better for them. Second, guide them into confessing their sin to God. Third, help them to embrace the forgiveness that can be theirs through the cross of Jesus Christ. Fourth, help them to discover the sin beneath their porn use, and address the triggers in their life. Fifth, establish a system of accountability. And sixth, set up borders and boundaries to keep them from accessing porn. God has a big plan for your kids and their sexuality. It doesn't include pornography!

Youth Culture Today with Walt Mueller

All this week we're looking at how to talk to our kids about the issue of pornography. My friend Nicholas Black, who helps people deal with sexual brokenness through his ministry at Harvest USA, offers some suggestions on what to tell your kids about the dangers of pornography. Nicholas says that we need to emphasize to our kids that the use of pornography leads to sexual addiction. This is the visual equivalent of crystal meth, a powerful and destructive drug that creates an ever-present hunger for an even bigger high. With pornography, lust becomes a desperate, compelling force that overrides your sanity and takes control of your life. Jesus said, “Everyone who practices a sin is a slave to sin.” We need to tell our kids that Peter's words in I Peter two-eleven are words to heed: “Abstain from the passions of the flesh, which wage war against your soul.” Let them know that God will reward their faithful obedience, and their resolve to follow him away from pornography.

Nicholas says that we need to help our kids see that pornography sabotages their future marital relationship long before they're even married. In other words, a twelve-year old boy who accesses pornography on his smartphone is already jeopardizing his relationship with his future wife. Pornography has devastated the marriages of countless men and women because it was brought into the relationship beforehand, creating a scenario where a person is addicted to pornography, and therefore unable to be fully honest, truthful, and intimate with their spouse. Tell your kids, pornography is an activity done in secret that will never help you in real life. It only isolates you from real people.

Nicholas says that we need to help our kids see that pornography will isolate them from healthy dating relationships. Viewing pornography is all about fantasy. It's not reality. It removes sex from the intimacy of a marriage between one man and one woman, and makes it all about you. Pornography enslaves you to a thought life that is unable to acknowledge the needs and desires of someone else. Real intimacy requires an investment in someone else. Your kids need to know that indulging in pornography can make it difficult to develop genuine affection towards their boyfriend or girlfriend. God wants all of us to realize the intimacy for which He made us. Pornography shipwrecks it all.

Youth Culture Today with Walt Mueller

All this week, I want to look at how to talk to our kids about the issue of pornography. Specifically, I want to share with you some suggestions from my good friend Nicholas Black, who helps people deal with sexual brokenness through his ministry at Harvest USA. Parents, it's important for you to realize that your kids are growing up in a hypersexualized world where pornography is not only pervasive, but seen as a normal part of life. If your kids are like most, they have been taught to think that looking at pornography isn't harmful, that everybody else is doing it, and that sex is natural. In essence, they think that they have control over their use of pornography. What was once seen as a vice is now seen as normal. Some Christian kids say that pornography is definitely wrong when you are married, but it's ok for people before they are married. But your kids need to know that pornography is devastating, and that it negatively impacts their lives. We'll start looking at how, tomorrow.

David is a pastor, author of several books, and has served in several capacities at Harvest USA for 19 years. David shares what he believes is missing from other books on Christian sexuality. Is marriage the answer and/or cure for unmet sexual desires, or are there sexual struggles in that union as well? What are some of the sexually-related challenges that children and parents alike face in this technological age? David shares some thoughts on the importance of sex in marriage being rooted in doctrine, and the power of strong local communities to uphold biblical ethics and accountability.  Show Notes Harvest USA Buy God, You, and Sex We are happy to give you the opportunity to win a free copy of God, You, and Sex.Just register! In this episode, Dr. John addresses the need for the church to speak to teens about sexuality as a part of a teen’s discipleship and within the context of the gospel narrative. You’ll also learn about 6 crucial ways the church can support parents in this effort.   A quote shared by Dr. John: John Freeman with Harvest USA uttered these prophetic words: I remembered talking to a church’s prayer team years earlier. They had been praying with people for more than ten years at a weekly intercessory healing prayer meeting. One leader said to me, “John, we’ve prayed with people about marriage issues, problems with children, job losses, interpersonal conflicts, crises of faith, and other personal problems, but never has someone come for prayer about anything of a sexual nature. Not once.” I was shocked. The numbers of those struggling with pornography, same-sex attractions, and sexual addictions are increasing daily. Add in family members affected and impacted by someone they love dealing with sexual brokenness, and it is clear this is a huge problem in the church today. I responded to this leader’s comment by saying, “You know, I’d be asking, why not? I’d be asking, how has our church communicated that it’s OK to talk about everything else, but not about ‘that?’ Somehow, you’ve conveyed this isn’t a safe place to talk about sex and sexual issues. And in doing that, you’ve become part of a collusion of silence.” Several years ago when our Board began thinking about expanding our mission focus at Harvest USA, one that would focus on educating and equipping the church, I remember what Board member, Steve Brown, said: “What Harvest USA does is the work of the church, work which the church has neglected out of fear and shame, out of not knowing what to do. We’ve got to help the church recapture the calling to rescue and redeem those struggling with sexual sin in the church. But, if we do this, it will be the most difficult thing that we’ve done.”   //What we talked about  Teaching sexual discipleship to our teens in a sex-saturated society seems like not just a difficult task, but maybe an overwhelming one. What are some of the challenges that we must face when it comes to sexual discipleship? We are dealing with the underpinnings of the sexual revolution in the 1960s. It promoted the notions of personal choice and unrestrained freedom of sexual expression. Related, there is the idea that we must rid ourselves of absolute truth or the fixed idea of right and wrong. CS Lewis, “We all want progress, but if you’re on the wrong road, progress means doing an about-turn and walking back to the right road…” Think about all the influences impacting teens today: 1) entertainment, 2) educational systems, 3) advertising, 4) social media, 5) pornography, etc. Step up our game… The danger is to feel overwhelmed and not do anything. “And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not” (Galatians 6:9). _  What’s one of the first things the church needs to do in this area? We need to establish that there is a credible biblical message. Todd Wilson wrote Mere Sexuality and he calls for the rediscovery of the Christian vision for sexuality in the Bible Our approach must be multi-faceted: Preaching, Teaching, Workshops, Specialized Support Groups, Books and resources, and a Planned and Coordinated Approach _  Six key elements of teaching and discipling our teens First, teach teens about sex from the Scripture starting with the Old Testament (how the first miracle, Imago Dei, monotheism, and monogamy are tied together). Consider Jim Burns’ idea of committing our lives to sexual purity, including honoring God with our bodies, renewing our minds for the good, turning our eyes away from worthless things, and guarding our heart above all else. Then we continue to teach from the New Testament (Jesus is the missing person, we are all broken sexually, and how Jesus models radical respect for women). Second, we must teach them the view of holy sexuality Third, we must teach them that they are opposed. Fourth, we must teach them their true spiritual identity. Fifth, equip teens to capitalize on the positives of technology. Sixth, the mission of the church is to bring healing to the sexually broken. _  But is the church ready for this approach now? What does the church need to start doing? The church will need to implement the four streams written about by John Eldredge in Waking the Dead, including: Stream of Walking with God Stream of Receiving God’s Intimate Counsel & Offering godly Counsel to others in God’s timing Stream of Healing, Deep Restoration and Deliverance Stream of Spiritual Warfare _  Call to Action: Parents, pray that God will expand your influence with your children. Speak to your pastor and church leaders to address the key sexual issues of this generation.

On this episode of Nut News with host Tyler Kern, Bob Nunes, CEO of Select Harvest USA, revealed good news for April 2019 almond shipments after the release of the month's Almond Position Report. Almonds set a new record high this month with 177 million pounds shipped, a 0.3 percent increase over the prior record of 176.4 million pounds. Nunes said domestic shipments were off a little this month, but the numbers are still the second largest April on record. Also “very strong” commitment numbers for almonds sold but not yet shipped show a 16 percent increase over last year, Nunes said. “We’re going to have a very tight transition into the new crop,” he said. “We’re going into the lowest carryout inventory ever.” Nunes highlighed the National Agricultural Statistics Service’s subjective farmer-reported survey of monthly crop production, released on May 10. The report showed a moderate increase in seasonal almond production. The National Agricultural Statistics Service’s Objective Yield forecast for almonds is coming in late June or early July, which is a more scientific report based on actual data of crop samples. Nunes discussed the continued trade tariffs conflict with China and its effect on the U.S. “It looks like for next few seasons we should continue seeing growing almond crop...with new products, and new markets,” Nunes said. “In the short term, it looks positive for almonds.”

What did you learn about sex and how did you learn about it when you were growing up? Christian parents, with assistance from youth leaders and the church, are given the responsibility to bring up their children in the nurture and instruction of the Lord. This includes talking about God’s order and design for sexuality. And because we live in a hyper-sexualized world that’s providing its own narrative on gender and sexuality, taking on this responsibility to instruct our kids about God’s design is non-negotiable. It’s especially important that we correct the erroneous narrative the culture is throwing at our daughters. What should we be teaching them about sex and sexuality? How can we communicate the biblical narrative on this good gift from God? Stick with us as we chat with Tim Geiger about a letter on sex and sexuality that he’s written to his teenage daughter, on this episode of Youth Culture Matters.
