In this episode, I interview Cindy Rodriguez, a second-generation Latina woman living in Southern California. Her family stories chronicle the lives of Mexican immigrants who worked at the Simons Brickyard in Los Angeles, CA. She feels a sense of connection with the poverty-stricken teens in rural Kenya, as they were both given a second chance at life through education and empowerment. Cindy started the nonprofit organization, Elimu Girls, a 501(c)(3), that empowers rural Kenyan teens to become entrepreneurs, ensuring financial freedom, self-worth, and equality. Upon graduation from our 2 year sewing and boarding program, she will have a voice, a choice, and a bank account.Follow CindySupport Elimu GirlsHeart Centered Leadership BookSupport the Show.

One of her greatest successes was co-launching HuffPost's LatinoVoices. This week on the say YES to yourself! podcast, I've called in my Queens to hold space for me as I share the most vulnerable episode yet. I'm a firm believer in curating the community we desire and today you'll hear from an amazing group of female entrepreneurs that have been meeting with me weekly on zoom for the past 2 years. We are committed to each other's up level, we are committed to each other's success, and we are committed to supporting each other through the ups and downs of life. Whether business, relationships, parenting, or hair product suggestions, we are in constant conversation with each other. In this sacred circle, I have found accountability, wisdom, grace, support, and celebration. In sharing a very personal recap of 2022 I knew I wanted to loop in these beautiful women who have been such a pivotal part of my story. A first draft of history for 2020, told through three very personal efforts to find -- and keep -- human connection amid a pandemic. We hear from 13-year-old Adiva Kaisary about how 2020 has complicated her relationships with her school friends and new neighborhood. Producer Veralyn Williams brings us a story from WNYC’s own reporter Cindy Rodriguez who faced COVID-19 head-on this year - while living alone as so many have. Finally, reporter Jenny Casas checks in with Chicagoan Niky Crawford, following a social experiment they crafted to bring strangers in isolation together. COMPANION LISTENING: “An Invitation to Dream” (11/2/2020)An exercise in radical imagination for a post-Trump world, with some of our favorite guests. “Rage, Grief, Joy” (6/18/2020)Stories about catharsis -- and the ways we gather to fight, to grieve, and to show up for each other. “The United States of Anxiety” airs live on Sunday evenings at 6pm ET. Cindy is the Founder of Elimu Girls, a 501C3 that assists rural teens with a sewing vocation to ensure they have a voice, choice, and a bank account. We are a grassroots organization that disrupts child bride and female genital mutilation rituals. We talk about: Her father experiencing deep shame for being Mexican - giving her a window into people being treated horribly. Her deeply impactful experience in Kenya that she knew she would never forget. Elimu Girls is a two year sewing program that facilitates a transformation for the girls. It helps them become strong independent women that have the opportunity to break the vicious cultural cycle. How working with the girls has benefited her so much, even though she is the one “helping them.” Having the courage to do things that are scary or uncomfortable is a daily practice - not something that just happens. If you want to be a change-maker, you need to fortify your ability to be courageous. We all have the ability to create change, even though it may feel like, “How can I possibly make the impact I want to?” Change is a ripple effect. You don’t have to “do it all” - you just have to create the ripple. What You Will Learn in This Episode: What is is like to be “one of a few” Why there is a lack of representation in consumer campaigns What travel and tourism professionals can do to improve engagement with diverse audiences The work Cindy’s team is doing to promote diversity, equity, and inclusion in the workplace Why intentionality is such a powerful tool for travel and tourism professionals Using Creativity and Collaboration to Address Racism Cindy Rodriguez is the Co-founder of Adirondack Diversity Solutions, an HR consulting firm that designs and implements initiatives around their clients’ visions, missions, and values. With Cindy’s expertise, Adirondack’s clients can capitalize on the social and economic benefits of a diversified work environment. Cindy has over ten years of human resources experience, and she delivers innovative HR solutions that promote transparency in policy and procedures, communication strategies, community engagement. On our podcast, Cindy explains how this approach to HR ties into the ideas of diversity, equity, and inclusion. “One of a Few” Cindy is a first-generation Latina, and her love for travel and tourism was sparked by the annual trips to her parents’ home countries as she grew up in the United States. Through her experiences, however, Cindy often found herself feeling that she was “one of a few,” and that sparked her passion for the work with diversity, equity, and inclusion that she does today. Wanting those things is not enough. So Cindy partnered with Dr. Donathan Brown to help other organizations carry out those beliefs. From policies and procedures to recruitment and retention, they help clients engage communities of color to create more comprehensive products, programming, and outreach strategies. Driving Community Engagement Throughout her career, Cindy and Dr. Brown have relied heavily on creativity and collaboration to address racism in local communities. The Adirondack Experience and The Cooperstown Friends of The Village Library are two great examples. ADS has partnered with them to help tourism leaders of color share their journeys and visions for the future. While they’re helping to put the spotlight on this demographic, they are also engaging the community as a whole with a unique, action-oriented dialogue. The power of creativity and collaboration is limitless, even in unprecedented times. Listeners, this week we're back with Cindy Rodriguez.Cindy has worked in journalism for over 10 years for companies like NBC, CNN, Latina magazine, and Vivala.com, which she co-launched. One of her greatest successes was assisting in the launch of HuffPost’s LatinoVoices. In 2015, she and her childhood friend co-founded the award-nominated feminist podcast Morado Lens where she and her cohost discuss sex, culture, and embracing intuition as a form of empowerment, all from a Latina’s perspective. She loves creating impactful and diverse content for English-dominant Latinos. Recently, she’s collaborated with two women to launch Only in NoHu, a community project bringing together locals and highlighting North Jersey’s best local events, eats, and more. When she’s not at her 9-5 at PBS as a digital producer, she’s working on Reclama’s spiritual hikes and retreats for women of color. Cindy was born and raised in New Jersey by her immigrant Peruvian parents and identifies as indigenous. We had so much fun talking, manis. Cindy Rodriguez is the founder of Start Fierce Business Solutions Inc. She's always had a passion for digital design and making things pretty but felt like something was missing. She found the missing piece of the puzzle when she was introduced to marketing while working at BookIt.com and was hooked. Throughout the years, she's worked as a freelancer honing her craft and working with clients while also helping business owners with marketing advice. During that time she realized that she was always giving people free business advice that went beyond the typical designer/client relationship. After a lot of soul-searching, I was inspired to start the Start Fierce Business Podcast (formerly The Fierce Entrepreneur Podcast.) to help people grow their businesses. Today I have the pleasure of talking with Cindy Rodriguez, from Orlando Florida about startups, her podcast The Fierce Entrepreneur and what she has learnt through her entrepreneurial journey in the business world. Entrepreneurs Mindset All entrepreneurs struggle with the same two things, time management and giving up control and it takes time to be able to come to terms with them and use them to your benefit. Entrepreneurs understand the importance of networking. If you want to grow your business or promote your startup you've got to learn to not be afraid to reach out to people. Business can be a very lonely place, and more often than not your friends don't quite understand what it is you do, so you need to network with other business people. Travelling The Same Path It's important to find others travelling the same path as you and you must be willing to share. The more we openly share with others the better it is for everyone. It's import to have an abundance mindset, not a scarcity mindset. What is a startup? A startup is not like a traditional business. In a traditional business, you expect slow to moderate business growth over time. This doesn't mean you cannot have fast growth, but usually, the growth is steady and in an upwards direction. A startup, on the other hand, has very high growth potential, but initially, there's nothing, followed by more nothing and then BOOM, there's a huge spike upwards. If you looked at it on a graph it's like a hockey stick. Pitching Ideas When you don't have any sales history or product, potential investors are investing in YOU, therefore they have got to like and believe in you. Expect a lot of NO's in the beginning, but every no takes you closer to a yes. The Shark Tank is a great show to watch to learn more about good and bad pitching. Pivoting When you get feedback from investors you've got to be prepared to make changes and sometimes you have to completely pivot and change the direction of your idea. "If you're a startup and if you cannot get someone to give you money, you suck" - Gary V Startup Acceleration If you're serious about startups you need to get involved in accelerator programs. At these workshops, you'll learn about business planning, competitive analysis and so much more. A great idea doesn't mean it's marketable Love your product, but only once you know there's a market for it. Loving your product will keep you fired up, but don't fall in love too early. Cindy's software applications are currently going through Beta Testing, so they can fix bugs and perfect their processes. Going to market too early can damage your reputation. Monday Morning Tip Listen to a podcast, even if it's for just 5 - 30 minutes. The right podcast will get you fired up and help you to perform at your best. Every year I choose a word to use for my yearly focus. I've found it keeps me on track. I’ve only been doing this for the past few years, and for me, it works extremely well, so maybe it's worth considering yourself. In 2016 my word for the year was ABUNDANCE When you look up the word abundance it means a state or condition of having a copious quantity of something…plentifulness. So you need to choose your mindset, do you want abundance or the opposite of abundance, which is scarcity...or lack of. Which word do you think will produce a more positive outcome for your year? In 2017 my word for the year was LEARNING I joking use to say that 2017 was my year of learning and 2018 was my year of earning. (Let's see how 2018 pans out) Now this doesn’t mean I'm switching off my learning in 2018, it’s just I now have a different word to focus on So my word for 2018 is CONNECTION. I want to connect with as many people as I can, not just in my local area or country but worldwide, and when I say connect, I don’t mean just collect more friends or followers. It’s important to go beyond getting LIKES – it’s about engaging with people. A connection is not just about connecting with people myself, it’s also about bringing other people together. If I see an opportunity where two people I know can be mutually beneficial to each other – then I’m going to introduce them. Today's Connections Today I was doing a podcast recording with Cindy Rodriguez for an upcoming episode (#32) and after our conversation, I said I knew someone who would be a perfect fit for her show, The Fierce Entrepreneur, so I put her in touch with Dennis Friebe who was my guest on Episode #16: The Brilliant Mind of A Magician. Today I also received an email from Dr Nimesh Patel letting me know how much he enjoyed my short 5-minute podcast episodes and I can't thank him enough. In fact, it was his email that prompted today’s episode. No matter what we’re doing true success comes from connecting with people and the deeper the connection the more rewarding the connection. It's More Than A Like It’s easy to listen to a podcast to and from work or while walking, but if you're enjoying it, stop for a moment and send the podcast host a message or an honest review. The next time you're scrolling through Facebook or Instagram, don't just click like or love, instead make a comment on the photo or video, and if you really enjoyed it, share it. Like I said CONNECTION is my word for the year, it doesn't have to be yours, but if you do choose to connect with people at a deeper level you're going to have a more enjoyable life. If you have any questions about this podcast or podcast notes please email me at tf@tysonfranklin.com If you have purchased my book I'd like to thank you. If you're still sitting on the fence and you're not sure if this book is for you, you can download the first 16 pages FREE. And just before you go I'd like to make you aware of my There's Money in Small Business event being held in Cairns on the 17th - 18th August 2018.
