Melany del Carpio is a first-generation, first-born Peruvian-American who is deeply committed to empowering women of color to thrive and be unapologetically themselves in the face of societal and capitalist pressures. With eight years of experience in higher education, she made a pivotal career transition into the tech industry in 2022. Throughout her career journey, Melany has faced significant challenges, including reaching a breaking point that required her to take medical leave and reclaim her power from a toxic work environment. This transformative experience has become the foundation of her passion: supporting others in achieving success while maintaining their well-being, free from the weight of overwork and unrealistic expectations. Melany is dedicated to helping others set boundaries, reclaim their rest, and define success on their own terms, empowering them to become who they are meant to be without compromise. In this week's episode, Melany shares exactly why rest is resistance. We all have these overwhelming expectations put on us, and it feels like the end of the world if we don't meet them. Our families immigrated here for a better life, and we don't want to even think of the possibility of letting them down. But Melany's story reminds us that while their journey was a brave one, it is brave for us to live our own lives on our own terms, too. And if that means letting go of their dreams for us and getting the rest our body needs, so be it. As the founder and chairman of Cervera Real Estate, she's played a pivotal role in shaping Miami's skyline. Over the years, she's worked alongside industry titans like Harry Helmsley and Jorge M. From her early days in Peru to her arrival in Miami in the 1960s, she recognized the city's potential long before it became the global hub it is today. She pioneered the model for new development sales and helped shape iconic projects like The Palace on Brickell, Apogee, St. Regis Bal Harbour, and Aston Martin Residences. Known as the Grand Lady of Real Estate and the Queen of Brickell, Alicia's contributions have been widely recognized—from a dedicated stretch of South Miami Avenue named in her honor to the South Florida Business Journal's Lifetime Achievement Award. Miami's skyline would not be what it is today without her vision. So, in celebration of her remarkable legacy, let's revisit one of our most valuable episodes. Here are Alicia Cervera Sr.'s 7 Keys to Selling New Developments. Guest: Alicia Cervera Sr. Host: Omar De Windt Producer: Veronica Paris

Nico is a Peruvian-American photographer, writer, and food obsessive who has spent the last four years documenting meals, thinking up stories, and occasionally remembering to put the camera down long enough to eat. Popular romance Bookstagrammer @ReadinRomance makes her authorial debut with NOT IN MY BOOK (Alcove Press). This hotly anticipated romance is The Hating Game meets Beach Read. In this sexy and hilarious enemies-to-lovers writers' romance, Rosie, an idealistic and passionate Peruvian American, leaves her Tennessee hometown to pursue her dream of making it in New York as a writer. But her plan is derailed when she ends up in class with her archnemesis and ex-crush, Aiden Huntington—an obnoxious, surly, and gorgeous literary fiction writer who doesn't have much patience for the romance genre or for Rosie. Rosie and Aiden regularly go to verbal battle in workshop until their professor reaches her breaking point. She allows them to stay in her class on one condition: they must cowrite a novel that blends their genres. The reluctant writing duo can't help but put pieces of themselves into their accidentally steamy novel, and their manuscriptin-progress provides an outlet for them to confess their feelings—and explore their attraction toward each other. When Rosie and Aiden find themselves competing against each other for a potentially career-changing opportunity, the flames of old rivalry reignite, and their once-in-a-lifetime love story is once again at risk of being shelved—unless they can find a way to end the book on their own terms. This book is especially suited for readers who will enjoy the banter of two rival writers, slow-burn chemistry, Taylor Swift, and lots of bookish culture all rolled into one epic love story ABOUT THE AUTHOR Katie Holt is a New York City resident but a Tennessee native. She studied English with a concentration in creative writing at NYU and fought with every professor to prove that romance novels were worthy of their time. She's a Nora Ephron fanatic, Swiftie, and warm chocolate chip enthusiast. Not in My Book is her first novel.
Felipe Coronel, aka Immortal Technique, is a legendary underground hip-hop artist known for his skills on the mic and his raw, highly political lyrics. Tech says growing up in Harlem during the 80's and 90's caused him to harbor a lot of rage—much of his music discusses colonialism, poverty, and corruption. This week, to celebrate National Hispanic Heritage Month, hear from Marie Arana, the Literary Director of the Library of Congress. Joined by author Juan Martinez, Arana discusses the importance of preserving and uplifting Latino history and her new book LatinoLand: A Portrait of America's Largest and Least Understood Minority. This conversation originally took place May 19, 2024 and was recorded live at the American Writers Festival.AWM PODCAST NETWORK HOMEAbout LatinoLand:"A perfect representation of Latino diversity" (The Washington Post), LatinoLand draws from hundreds of interviews and prodigious research to give us both a vibrant portrait and the little-known history of our largest and fastest-growing minority, in "a work of prophecy, sympathy, and courage" (Junot Díaz, Pulitzer Prize-winning author).LatinoLand is an exceptional, all-encompassing overview of Hispanic America based on personal interviews, deep research, and Marie Arana's life experience as a Latina. At present, Latinos comprise twenty percent of the US population, a number that is growing. By 2050, census reports project that one in every three Americans will claim Latino heritage. But Latinos are not a monolith. They do not represent a single group. The largest groups are Mexicans, Puerto Ricans, Dominicans, Salvadorans, and Cubans. Each has a different cultural and political background. Puerto Ricans, for example, are US citizens, whereas some Mexican Americans never immigrated because the US-Mexico border shifted after the US invasion of 1848, incorporating what is now the entire southwest of the United States. Cubans came in two great waves: those escaping communism in the early years of Castro, many of whom were professionals and wealthy, and those permitted to leave in the Mariel boat lift twenty years later, representing some of the poorest Cubans, including prisoners. As LatinoLand shows, Latinos were some of the earliest immigrants to what is now the US—some of them arriving in the 1500s. They are racially diverse—a random infusion of white, Black, indigenous, and Asian. Once overwhelmingly Catholic, they are becoming increasingly Protestant and Evangelical. They range from domestic workers and day laborers to successful artists, corporate CEOs, and US senators. Formerly solidly Democratic, they now vote Republican in growing numbers. They are as culturally varied as any immigrants from Europe or Asia.Marie Arana draws on her own experience as the daughter of an American mother and Peruvian father who came to the US at age nine, straddling two worlds, as many Latinos do. "Thorough, accessible, and necessary" (Ms. magazine), LatinoLand unabashedly celebrates Latino resilience and character and shows us why we must understand the fastest-growing minority in America.MARIE ARANA is a Peruvian-American author of nonfiction and fiction as well as the inaugural Literary Director of the Library of Congress. She is the recipient of a 2020 literary award from the American Academy of Arts & Letters. Among her recent positions are: Director of the National Book Festival, the John W. Kluge Center's Chair of the Cultures of the Countries of the South, and Writer at Large for the Washington Post. For many years, she was editor-in-chief of the Washington Post's book review section, Book World. Marie has also written for the New York Times, the National Geographic, Time Magazine, the International Herald Tribune, Spain's El País, Colombia's El Tiempo, and Peru's El Comercio, among many other publications. Her sweeping history of Latin America, Silver, Sword, and Stone, was named Best Nonfiction Book of 2019 by the American Library Association, and was shortlisted for the 2020 Andrew Carnegie Medal of Excellence. Her biography of Simón Bolívar won the 2014 Los Angeles Times Book Prize. Marie's memoir, American Chica, was a finalist for the 2001 National Book Award. She has also published two prizewinning novels, Cellophane and Lima Nights.JUAN MARTINEZ is the author of the novel Extended Stay (2023) and the story collection Best Worst American (2017). He lives near Chicago and is an associate professor at Northwestern University. His work has appeared in McSweeney's, The Chicago Quarterly Review, Huizache, Ecotone, NIGHTMARE, NPR's Selected Shorts, Mississippi Review and elsewhere, and is forthcoming in Ploughshares and The Sunday Morning Transport.

Welcome to a brand new episode of the ¿Quién Tú Eres? podcast, where we explore the conflict we often face between "professionalism" & being our authentic selves. This week's guest is Francesca Mayca Wegner. A movement leader who dreams big and envisions the long-term possibilities around her, Francesca Mayca Wegner recognizes that it takes resources, access, and dedication to affect sustainable change and she has dedicated her life to that very mission. Francesca is the co-founder of Midwest Latina(MWL), an apparel and accessories brand that makes stuff for you to wear, so you feel good about how you look, who you are, and where you come from. As two first-generation Peruvian-American sisters who were born in Chicagoland and live in Milwaukee, Francesca and her sister Gabriella have always felt passionate about finding spaces and brands that make them feel like they belong. MWL is where design and identity unite for a one-of-a-kind Midwest Latina look—where cultura meets classic. Midwest Latinas is a reflection of Francesca and Gabriella's multifaceted identities and creates space for other Midwest Latinas to be seen and celebrated. Francesca also serves as President and Chief Possibilities Officer of Hispanic Professionals of Greater Milwaukee (HPGM). Appointed in April 2021, she is an advocate, connector, and convener, and has led the organization through a record growth period with its membership, philanthropic gifts, and revenue during one of the most challenging times within the global landscape. A trailblazer known for her advocacy of others, Francesca was recognized in 2021 by Madison365 as one of ‘Wisconsin's 36 Most Influential Latino Leaders,' as both a ‘40 Under 40 Winner' and as a ‘Power Broker & Executive to Watch' by the Milwaukee Business Journal in 2022, and BizTimes named her a 2023 ‘Notable BIPOC Executive,' which was especially meaningful as she was nominated by her HPGM team. In her free time, you can find Francesca cozying up with a good book or podcast at a local coffee shop with a cafecito in hand or spending time with her husband Ted and their dogs, Michael Jordan and Scottie. In this episode, Francesca tells us how she had to leave her people-pleasing tendencies behind to become her most authentic self. As a survivor of domestic violence, she's had to learn how to read the emotions of others and diffuse any and all tension in order to survive. And as an adult, she still felt she had to use these same survival tactics at work, even when she's the executive. But by catering to everyone else's needs, she was neglecting her own. It wasn't until she was insulted behind closed doors and heard that she “wasn't brown enough” to count as diversity within her company, that she decided to put down the weight of people-pleasing and start speaking up for herself. Natalia Sylvester's young adult novel BREATHE AND COUNT BACK FROM TEN will have everyone reimagining a life where all we did was swim our hearts away in the cool spring Florida waters. This beautiful story opens us to the world of Verónica, a Peruvian-American teen who loves the water so much that she longs to become a mermaid at an aquatic theme park. She has two things standing in her way, her overprotective father and her diagnosis of hip dysplasia. Natalia reveals her journey as a writer who wanted to see characters reflected between pages that mirrored her life as a person with a disability and desires to live beyond the expectations of others. She also talks with us about young people finding power in speaking up and advocating for themselves in a world that feels they would never know what would be best for them.

Marie Arana is the award-winning Peruvian-American author of Silver, Sword, and Stone: Three Crucibles in the Latin American Story, a book about a whole continent that manages not to be a thousand pages long—even though it covers about a thousand years of history. She makes the compelling case that there are really three driving forces behind the entire region: exploitation and extraction; violence; and religion. Of course, all of these forces are deeply interrelated—and that's the point. To drive home how tangled the past is with the present, Arana weaves the stories of three contemporary Latin Americans together with a millennium of history to ultimately show why you can't really explain the rest of the world without first understanding the story of Latin America.Go beyond the episode:Marie Arana's Silver, Sword, and Stone: Three Crucibles in the Latin American StoryRead Richard Moe's review on our website (“a long-overdue and persuasive corrective”)Here's a less blood-soaked tale from the cloisters of Peru: librarian Helen Hazen on a clutch of rare books tucked away in an Andean conventTune in every week to catch interviews with the liveliest voices from literature, the arts, sciences, history, and public affairs; reports on cutting-edge works in progress; long-form narratives; and compelling excerpts from new books. In his Fifth Symphony, Mahler embraces all aspects of life. After a tumultuous funeral march, the work's five movements include folk-inspired dances, a tender love song and a boisterous finale. Noted for his "great affinity with Mahler" (Le Monde), Finnish conductor Klaus Mäkelä pairs the composer's Fifth Symphony with the U.S. premiere of Aino by Peruvian American composer Jimmy López Bellido. Explore the music in the free preconcert conversation featuring Steve Rings in Orchestra Hall 75 minutes before the performance. The conversation will last approximately 30 minutes. As a proud Peruvian American, she draws from her bicultural experience to make sure she keeps breaking barriers between general & multicultural markets. In this episode, Danielle discusses how representation and culture have shifted in the way that the media portrays us, and ultimately, how that impacts our ability to show up as our authentic selves. Clare Rojas, whose artistic iterations first came into broad view alongside the ‘Mission School' movement coming out of San Francisco, an association culminating into the 'Beautiful Losers' documentary, exhibition tour and book, is internationally known as a highly accomplished and prolific fine artist with works acquired by the MoMA and the Whitney Museum of American Art. Although revered for possessing an uncanny talent for fairytale-like story-telling sometimes carrying a darker twist, which she also channels into songwriting, the artist proved early on incapable of sticking to one medium or style, which only made her output that more intriguing. Of course, all of these forces are deeply interrelated—and that’s the point. To drive home how tangled the past is with the present, Arana weaves the stories of three contemporary Latin Americans together with a millennium of history to ultimately show why you can’t really explain the rest of the world without first understanding the story of Latin America.Go beyond the episode:Marie Arana’s Silver, Sword, and Stone: Three Crucibles in the Latin American StoryRead Richard Moe’s review on our website (“a long-overdue and persuasive corrective”)Here’s a less blood-soaked tale from the cloisters of Peru: librarian Helen Hazen on a clutch of rare books tucked away in an Andean conventTune in every week to catch interviews with the liveliest voices from literature, the arts, sciences, history, and public affairs; reports on cutting-edge works in progress; long-form narratives; and compelling excerpts from new books. Lately, there have been countless articles about the rise of authoritarian regimes. One aspect of all of these regimes is, even as we’re seeing here in America, the dramatic extremes in corruption. Often fueled by power, money laundering, drugs, and simply all manner of crimes upon the public. Perhaps nowhere in contemporary times was this worse than in Columbia in the 1990s and 2000s. Amidst a complicated, murky civil war, drug cartels, corruption and unrestrained violence, the country came apart. What exactly happened, where is it today and what we can learn from it, is the subject a new and powerful book by Peruvian-American activist/writer Maria McFarland Sánchez-Moreno entitled There Are No Dead Here: A Story of Murder and Denial in Colombia. My conversation with Maria McFarland Sánchez-Moreno:
Monica Brand Engel is a Peruvian American investor and entrepreneur who has been involved with a number of investment vehicles and products aimed at broadening financial inclusion. Monica spent her formative years in Silicon Valley and is a disciple of agile development and user-centered design. The financial inclusion businesses she helped launch include Quona Capital, Accion Frontier Inclusion Fund and its predecessor fund, Frontier Investments Group, Anthuri Catalysts (Cape Town venture capital accelerator), a Calvert index fund (Bethesda based socially responsible mutual fund), lending intermediaries sponsored by The Development Fund (San Francisco based) and new business lines with Compartamos (now Gentera, the largest microfinance institution in Mexico). In this chat, Monica talks to Andile Masuku about Quona's recent investment in the South African fintech startup, Yoco, and comments on some of the criticism frequently levelled at the impact investment community.

In April 2012 Renato’s latest book "ET Presence-Role of USA and New World Visions" offers a new perspective about the presence of ETs, and how their arrival over the last 60 years has been covered up in the US. Other countries have acknowledged the ET presence; will America own up to the truth? Or be forced under exceptional circumstances to begin a communications with ETs? The author provides insights and historical references concerning the potential cultural impact of the ET presence with the USA as the main leading country in the epicenter of economic, social and geopolitical changes. I can't lie about it, one of the reasons I first got to know Elise Roedenbeck is because her Twitter bio said something to the effect of "I touched Elvis Costello once." Whaaaaat? A woman after my own heart. Soon after I realized Elise is one of the funniest and unique comedians I know through her stand-up, her Mija Weekly on Pocho.com, and now her work with Fusion TV! A Peruvian-American who grew up in Miami, came to New York, and found her way back down to South Beach, Elise talks about her beginnings in comedy, her rockin' high school experiences, and so, so much more.
