Dr. Derek Yach, has been a global health expert and anti-smoking advocate for more than 30 years, is the Founder, President, and Board Member of the Foundation for a Smoke-Free World (FSFW - https://www.smokefreeworld.org/), and is also a passionate advocate for health promotion and disease prevention. Dr. Yach is a former World Health Organization (WHO) cabinet director and executive director for noncommunicable diseases and mental health where he was deeply involved with the development of the world's treaty on tobacco control, the Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC). He is also the former chief health officer of the Vitality Group, executive director of the Vitality Institute, Senior Vice President, global health and agriculture policy at PepsiCo, director of global health at the Rockefeller Foundation, and a professor of global health at Yale University. Dr. Yach has authored or co-authored more than 250 peer-reviewed articles on global health and has served on several advisory boards, including the World Economic Forum, Cornerstone Capital, and the Wellcome Trust. From 2007 to 2016, he served on the program advisory committee of the Clinton Global Initiative. Dr. Yach is a dual citizen of the United States and South Africa. He has an honorary DSc from Georgetown University, Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery from the University of Cape Town, BSc (Epidemiology), University of Stellenbosch, and an MPH from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. The Foundation for a Smoke-Free World (FSFW) is an independent, nonprofit organization that funds research, promotes innovation, and supports collaborative initiatives committed to reducing deaths and diseases caused by smoking, and ending smoking in this generation. They strive to identify and address the unique needs of the developing world as they relate to tobacco cessation and harm reduction, and serves as a convener of global research supporting the reduction of tobacco use, while helping to address the impact of decreased smoking rates on agriculture and economies. The Foundation's work focuses on three core areas: Health, Science, and Technology (HST); Agriculture and Livelihoods; and Industry Transformation. Disclaimer - How is the FSFW Funded? At its inception, the FSFW entered into a Pledge Agreement in which it agreed to accept charitable gifts from Philip Morris International (PMI) each year for the period 2018 through 2029 to fund their mission of solving the global health crisis and ending smoking in this generation. Recently, that agreement was revised, and PMI's annual charitable gifts have been reduced. While FSFW is aware that there are challenges associated with accepting any funding from the tobacco industry, given the urgency of the problem – 1.1 billion smokers, more than 8 million dying each year, and a trajectory toward a billion deaths this century, the FSFW was compelled to help save lives, and took the bold step of accepting funding from PMI. The FSFW operates with integrity, as they abide all legal requirements, and holds itself to the highest ethical and scientific standards. Independence and transparency are core principles of the Foundation. To that end, FSFW adheres to the criteria laid forth by Cohen et al., particularly those relevant to transparency and independence, and has established an independent research agenda.

If we want to unite movements and build a new vision for our society—and the economy that enables it—we have to understand that, according to our guest Dr. Andre Perry from the Brookings Institution, current events are reflecting the very soul of our country. We must have the courage to look into the mirror to see the long and unquestionable history of inequality and racism built into our system’s very architecture.Glossing over these realities will not get us to something better. We cannot skip over the step of reckoning with our past—and the ways in which this past still haunts us today. This process of reflection is, in fact, the necessary precursor to a brighter future. While we long for some solid ground—some certainty—if we can muster the courage to open our eyes wide and look into that mirror, we will see not only an ugly past and present of racist policies, but also the beautiful potential for a functioning Democracy, an accessible American Dream, and a more perfect union. What we will also see is hundreds of thousands—if not millions—of civic siblings, with their eyes wide open, embodying the collective courage to dream of and work towards enduring equity. This is the family we all need to lean into right now. Liberty and justice for all—this is the vision we need to be marching towards. And thanks to Randy Strickland from Cornerstone Capital, you’ll leave this episode with tangible steps you can take today—right now—to start walking this path.Learn more by subscribing to our Courage Collective e-letter at www.decadeofcourage.com.

Ira Pastor, ideaXme life sciences ambassador and founder of Bioquark, interviews Dr. Derek Yach, founder, president, and board member of The Foundation for a Smoke-Free World, and passionate advocate for health promotion and disease prevention. Dr Yach's objective is to end smoking in this generation. We investigated to see how that might be achieved. Ira Pastor Comments: The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that we currently have over 1.1 billion smokers on earth, and that tobacco kills more than 8 million people each year. More than 7 million of those deaths are the result of direct tobacco use while around 1.2 million are the result of non-smokers being exposed to second-hand smoke. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC) say that cigarette smoking is responsible for more than 480,000 deaths per year in the United States, including more than 41,000 deaths resulting from secondhand smoke exposure. This is about one in five deaths annually, or 1,300 deaths every day. Smoking leads to disease and disability and harms nearly every organ of the body. More than 16 million Americans are living with a disease caused by smoking including cancer, heart disease, stroke, lung diseases, diabetes, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), which includes emphysema and chronic bronchitis, as well as increasing risk for tuberculosis, certain eye diseases, auto- immune disorders including rheumatoid arthritis, and erectile dysfunction in males. Total economic cost of smoking in the U.S. alone is more than $300 billion a year, including nearly $170 billion in direct medical care for adults and more than $156 billion in lost productivity due to premature death and exposure to secondhand smoke. Ending Smoking for Good The Foundation for a Smoke-Free World (FSFW) is an independent, nonprofit organization that funds research, promotes innovation, and supports collaborative initiatives committed to reducing deaths and diseases caused by smoking, and ending smoking in this generation. Date of Recording: 23/01/2019 Description: One of the world’s most ambitious investment and infrastructure development projects, the Belt and Road Initiative is a Chinese government strategy to connect overland and maritime routes across Asia, Africa and Europe. Projected to cost more than US$1tr and involving investments and projects in over seventy states, it is a statement of China’s strategic ambition and growing global role. In his keynote address for the Centre for Defence Studies at King’s College London, Professor Andrew Macleod addresses misconceptions about the Belt and Road Initiative, and places in this broader international context the current debates about Britain’s place in the world after Brexit. Professor Macleod will explore topics including: - The rebalancing of the geopolitical landscape - understanding China’s view of the world and how Belt and Road fits into this mindset; - A closer look at the land and maritime routes being developed; Economic, security and humanitarian implications; and, - How can the Commonwealth best capitalise on the opportunities created by Belt and Road? Bio: Andrew Macleod is Visiting Professor at the Centre for Defence Studies in the School of Security Studies at King’s College London. Professor Macleod is also Vice Chancellor’s distinguished Fellow at Deakin University and a Senior Visiting Lecturer at Tasmania University Law School. At Kings, he contributes to counter-extremism thinking and previously he led the ‘Beyond Shared Value Commission’ looking at ways to measure, in financial terms, external risks to corporations. Professor Macleod’s humanitarian activities included time as Chief of Operations of the UN Emergency Coordination Centre in Pakistan, where he negotiated a complex series of relationships that saw the Pakistan military, international NGOs, UN agencies, US military, UK military and non-state militant groups all playing a role in delivering a successful operation without casualties or conflict. And at the International Committee of the Red Cross, he served in the Balkans and Rwanda during the 1990s. He set up and ran Law of Armed Conflict training with military units in Rwanda and former Yugoslavia that resulted in a measurable decrease in civilian casualties. Amongst other activities in his diverse and international portfolio, Professor MacLeod is the co-founder of Brexit Advisory Services, the Non-Executive Chairman of British based Griffin Law, a Non-Executive Director at New York-based Cornerstone Capital, and an Advisory Board member of International Lawyers for Africa. ______________________________ For more news and information on upcoming events, please visit our website at kcl.ac.uk/warstudies.

Unbought historian F. William Engdahl visits for the first time. Brooke MacDonald of Cornerstone Capital revisits for an update. Most intellectuals are owned by the CFR or related elitist think tanks that richly reward scholars in exchange for propaganda used to brainwash the masses Bernaysian style. Bernays' idea was that to have an orderly democracy, people must all be programmed to think alike. Engdahl is one Ivy Leaguer who escaped the satanic clutches of the small ruling elite. Much like G. Edward Griffin, William provides evidence of how the elite have succeeded in destroying peace, prosperity and meritorious-based middle class success into a war mongering parasitic empire and in the process turning the world backward toward a new dark age. At the heart of this decline is dishonest money that enables the elite to clandestinely redistribute wealth from those who produce it to incestuous corporate and government partners. Time permitting M. Oliver will opine on key markets.
