Chinese policymakers will likely adopt a more pro-growth stance and strengthen "extraordinary countercyclical measures" to spur the economy amid pressing challenges from sluggish domestic demand and external uncertainties, economists said. They anticipate a new round of stimulus packages focusing on driving domestic demand and boosting consumption to address domestic structural issues, offset the rising headwinds from a grimmer global environment and foster sustainable, high-quality growth in the long run. The economists also said they believe that measures in the pipeline may include more public borrowing and spending, with a growing shift of policy emphasis to consumption, enhanced financial support for low-income households, and increased spending on the property sector through the buying back of land or by helping developers finish presold homes. Their comments came as the market is closely watching how China will draw up growth targets and policies to revive the world's second-largest economy when China's top legislative and political advisory bodies meet for the annual two sessions in early March. Noting that the broader economy is still facing pressures from a harsher external environment and still-weak domestic demand, Sun Xuegong, director of the department of policy study and consultation at the Chinese Academy of Macroeconomic Research, said that policymakers will likely introduce a package of stimulus measures aimed at boosting market confidence and stabilizing expectations. The academy is part of the National Development and Reform Commission, the country's top economic regulator. As authorities pledged to implement extraordinary countercyclical policies this year, Sun highlighted the need to expand fiscal expenditure, with policy focus shifting to spurring consumption. We need a comprehensive policy mix to boost consumption," Sun said in an interview with China Daily. "The government has already announced raising the pension level and providing subsidies to the low-income group. And this year, the country will extend the program of trade-in deals for consumer goods and expand the scope to more fields of consumption." With a series of existing policies taking effect gradually and more supportive measures in the pipeline, Sun said he expects to see a pickup in consumption. At a study session held last week by the State Council, China's Cabinet, Premier Li Qiang emphasized boosting consumption and improving people's livelihoods through stronger and more targeted measures, in a bid to strengthen the fundamental role of consumption in driving economic development.2月21日,国务院常务会议召开。 Wang Tao, chief China economist at UBS Investment Bank, said her team expects the government to ramp up fiscal spending to support consumption and the household sector, including more than doubling the size of the trade-in program to over 300 billion yuan ($41.3 billion), creating a subsidy program for families with young children, and increasing the payout level of residents' basic pension and the government contribution to basic social insurance. These much-anticipated measures could gradually help underpin household confidence and unleash consumption potential in the long run," Wang said. On the monetary front, Wang said she anticipates that the two sessions will follow the "moderately loose" monetary policy tone set during the Central Economic Work Conference in December, with an explicit call for lowering the funding cost of corporate financing and household credit, cutting reserve requirement ratios and policy rates and enhancing counter cyclical adjustments. Tian Xuan, associate dean of Tsinghua University's PBC School of Finance, said this year's economic growth target will likely remain at "around 5 percent", the same as last year, reflecting the continuity and consistency of policies and aligning with the country's aspiration that its per capita GDP would reach the level of a moderately developed economy by 2035. The expectation of an unchanged growth target comes as China's major economic hubs, such as Beijing and Shanghai as well as Guangdong province, have announced GDP growth goals of around 5 percent for the year. It would be a goal that we need to strive for and reach with extra effort, which can effectively inspire all the people across the country to work hard together," said Tian, who expects this year's budget deficit-to-GDP ratio to increase to 4 percent or higher. Lu Ting, chief China economist at Nomura, said a higher fiscal deficit ratio would allow the central government to issue more bonds, ramp up transfers to local governments and alleviate fiscal pressures. Lu said the fiscal stimulus package will likely focus on areas including funding for a trade-in program for equipment upgrades and consumer goods, spending on the property sector through the buying back of land or by helping developers finish presold homes, and financial support for low-income households as well as funding to encourage childbirth. The Chinese economy may get off to a relatively good start.…We expect year-on-year real GDP growth to stay at 5 percent in the first quarter," he said. 5%。”The breakthrough of China's homegrown artificial intelligence model DeepSeek has triggered a stock rally that may boost investment and consumption, while the expansion of the trade-in program is stimulating sales of digital goods, he added. explicitadj.

The sizzle has come off of China's decades of economic growth, as the country contends with deflation, slumping consumer confidence, plummeting foreign investment, a cratered urban property sector, high local government debt, overcapacity in manufacturing, and a private sector cowed by government crackdowns, as well as a shrinking workforce and an aging population. For all that, China is still the world's second largest economy, the largest trading partner of most of the world's countries, and one of the world's biggest bilateral lenders. And China listed its economic growth rate in 2023 as a respectable 5.2 percent, causing more than one economist to raise a eyebrow.  How to make sense of all this, and get an idea of what China's options are to sustain a future path of comfortable economic growth?  Settle back, put your earbuds in, and listen as the two respected China-born economists in this episode lay out the challenges, choices, and possibilities that could shape China's future.Tao Wang, author of Making Sense of China's Economy  (2023) is chief China economist, managing director, and Head of Asia Economic Research at UBS Investment Bank in Hong Kong, and was formerly an economist at the International Monetary Fund.  Her research on China covers a wide range of topics including monetary policy, the debt problem, shadow banking, local government finance, US-China trade disputes, supply chain shifts, RMB internationalization, the property bubble, the demographic challenge, the urban-rural divide, and the long-term growth potential. As the leader of Dynasty Financial Partners' Investment Banking division, Harris brings over 15 years of financial services experience to the table. His career journey is marked by significant achievements, including a successful stint at UBS Investment Bank, where he played a pivotal role as an Executive Director in the Financial Institutions Group. During his time at UBS, he was instrumental in originating, leading, and executing strategic M&A and capital market transactions exceeding $10 billion, specifically focusing on the asset and wealth management industry. I'm excited to share Harris' expertise with you, while discussing the evolving landscape of RIA M&A, as well as discussing equity, industry skepticisms, and what the future looks to have in store for the space. THE SHIFT TO INORGANIC GROWTH STRATEGIESThere is an important mindset shift necessary for advisors moving from organic to inorganic growth strategies. This shift often happens internally, for example, when an advisor excels and seeks equity in the firm, leading CEOs to seek valuation guidance. Other times, it's about friendly deals between neighboring RIAs or advisors seeking to join a former colleague's firm. Organic growth, characterized by internally driven expansion such as acquiring new clients or increasing assets under management, is a familiar terrain for most advisors. The shift to inorganic growth, however, such as mergers and acquisitions (M&A), requires a different strategic approach and mindset. Inorganic growth often involves complex negotiations, valuations, and integration processes that aren't typically encountered in organic expansion. THE VALUE OF EQUITY IN M&A TRANSACTIONSHarris also touched on the critical role of equity in M&A transactions. In a high interest rate market, cash is king, but equity can be an even more valuable currency. This is especially true when smaller firms merge with larger ones, allowing for a 'second transaction' opportunity as the larger entity grows and scales. The successful realization of value from equity stakes in M&A transactions relies not only on the timing and execution of the initial deal, but determining whether these equity stakes can be monetized profitable also relies on: The ongoing performance and strategic direction of the merged entity The overall health of the industry Market conditions The strategic decisions made post-merger INDUSTRY SKEPTICISMWhile optimistic about the future, Harris also acknowledged the skepticism surrounding the industry, citing examples like Focus Financial and United Capital. The success or failure of equity models in the RIA space will largely depend on how these transactions are structured and the strategic decisions of the firms involved. He suggests that a careful approach, focusing on long-term value rather than short-term gains, will be crucial for the success of these equity plays. Harris' insights into the RIA market highlight the importance of strategic thinking and adaptability in a rapidly evolving industry. His emphasis on the psychological aspects of deal-making, the strategic use of equity, and the need for disciplined underwriting underscores the complexity of modern investment banking in the RIA space. As the industry moves forward into 2024 and beyond, the lessons shared by Harris will undoubtedly play a critical role in shaping the future of RIA mergers and acquisitions. • • • For my full discussion with Harris, and more on this topic and topics not featured on this blog post:Listen to the Full DealQuest Podcast Episode Here• • • FOR MORE ON HARRIS BALTCH:https://dynastyinvestmentbank.com/team/harris-b/https://www.linkedin.com/in/harrisbaltch/ Corey Kupfer is an expert strategist, negotiator, and dealmaker. Live—from the campus of Hillsdale College in beautiful Hillsdale Michigan— this is Scot Bertram in for Steve on the Steve Gruber Show for –Wednesday November 15th 2023—   —Here are 3 big things you need to know—   Three—  The Federal Reserve will likely start cutting interest rates this spring.  That's according to a new estimate from UBS Investment Bank. The cuts could come as early as March. UBS said easing inflation could pave a way for a two-point-seven-five percent decrease in the interest rate over the year. That would almost halve the current nearly five-and-a-half percent rate.   Two—  Michigan Court of Claims judge has ruled former President Donald Trump will be on the ballot for the Republican primary in the state.  Opponents tried to use a Civil War-era constitutional clause to keep Trump off as they cited the insurrection provision of the 14th Amendment.  Judge James Redford says Trump followed state law to qualify for the ballot and he cannot remove him.     And number one— The House has passed a stopgap bill that will prevent a government shutdown.  On Tuesday, the House voted in favor of a Republican plan to fund some departments until mid-January and the rest through early February at current spending levels

Welcome to Episode 8 of The Investment Banking Leaders Podcast, hosted by Altrum's Deal Toy Global Head, Peter Nieberg! Our mission is to connect as many of you with successful investment banking leaders as possible.  We can't believe we've reached the end of Series 1 already. Our final episode for this series features an amazing guest, Peter Shin, Managing Director at Stifel Financial Corporation in London. Peter has loads of impressive experience in the industry, starting his career off at UBS Investment Bank as an Analyst. After that, Peter worked his way up through different firms such as KPMG, Piper Jaffray, Nomura International, and Mooreland Partners, ultimately setting him up for success in his leadership role at Stifel. His rapid ascent to the top, going from Analyst to MD in just 11 years, showcases his determination and sheer talent in the industry.  If you're interested in hearing a fun fact about Peter, we have a great one for you. After competing in range shooting at university, Peter obtained a license to teach others how to shoot guns. While he doesn't use the license or practice often due to life getting in the way, he says it is quite a fun fact to bring up at client events!  All banks work differently, but Peter's advice for analysts is relevant to all. Trying to understand the big picture is key; don't let yourself get absorbed in the minutia of what you need to do without actually understanding why. This is not helpful for your career at all; there should be a healthy balance between the production and the understanding of a task! Another key tip, do your best to not get overwhelmed by the intensity of working on a specific deal. Spiraling with worry will only set you back further – try to see the light at the end of the tunnel, push through and give it your all!  If you'd like to learn more about Peter and get even more valuable career advice, press play for the final episode of Series 1 now!  ------------------------------------------------------------- The Investment Banking Leaders Podcast  Hosted by Peter Nieberg  Produced by Peter Nieberg and Brett Dayman  Edited by Natalia Revere

In this episode we chat to Spencer Cole, Chief Investment Officer for Vox Royalty who are a mining royalty company with a portfolio of over 60 royalties and streams spanning 8 jurisdictions. Since the beginning of 2020, Vox has announced over 25 separate transactions to acquire over 50 royalties. In the past 6 months alone Vox has dual listed on the NASDAQ exchange, launched a maiden dividend and announced +160% annual revenue growth. With a Masters of Engineering and a Bachelor of Commerce, Spencer co-founded Mineral Royalties Online (MRO), a specialist marketplace/brokerage for mineral royalties underpinned by developing the world's largest proprietary royalty database, which was subsequently sold to SilverStream in 2019. While at MRO, Spencer was involved in over $1 billion of royalty transactions. In addition to co-founding MRO, Spencer has spent over 10 years at BHP, South32 and UBS Investment Bank in a wide range of commercial and technical mining roles. Spencer gives us an update on VOX Royalty and give us a more in-depth understand of the royalty space and why data is becoming more important than ever within the mining industry. KEY TAKEAWAYS Toronto is the home of many mining companies, but the true understanding required for the industry is not quite there. The ASX continues to support African projects more, whereas the Toronto Stock Exchange and TSX venture support South American more consistently. Junior explorers have historically sold mining projects and kept a contract that gives them a future royalty scheme. There is a huge volume of data in the mining industry that is not being properly processed and evaluated. This is representative of the opportunity we have in the sector to find insight and benefit. Royalty a mainly North American-focussed sector. Most royalties are generated when businesses sell mining claims. There are simply more gold royalties in North America because it's a rich area in terms of gold. BEST MOMENTS 'I'm a reformed investment banker' 'There's a slight bias in terms of which geographies they'll allocate capital to' 'Toronto is a pretty fun place to live, particularly as a mining executive' 'We're typically finding these royalty contracts sitting in the hands of prospectors' 'The benefit of hindsight is always a double-edged sword' VALUABLE RESOURCES Dig Deep – The Mining Podcast on iTunes spencer@voxroyalty.com https://voxroyalty.com/ https://www.linkedin.com/company/voxroyalty/ https://twitter.com/vox_royalty VALUABLE RESOURCES mailto:rob@mining-international.org https://www.linkedin.com/in/rob-tyson-3a26a68/ http://www.mining-international.org https://twitter.com/MiningConsult https://www.facebook.com/MiningInternational.org https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC69dGPS29lmakv-D7LWJg_Q?guided_help_flow=3 ABOUT THE HOST Rob Tyson is the Founder and Director of Mining International Ltd, a leading global recruitment and headhunting consultancy based in the UK specialising in all areas of mining across the globe from first-world to third-world countries from Africa, Europe, the Middle East, Asia, and Australia. Join the Hoover Book Club for engaging discussions with leading authors on the hottest policy issues of the day. Hoover scholars explore the latest books that delve into some of the most vexing policy issues facing the United States and the world. Find out what makes these authors tick and how they think we should approach our most difficult challenges. In our latest installment, we will feature a discussion between former Senator Phil Gramm, John Early and John B. Taylor the George P. Shultz Senior Fellow in Economics at the Hoover Institution on Senator Gramm's and Mr. Early's latest book The Myth of American Inequality: How Government Biases Policy Debate co-authored by Robert Ekelund.  ABOUT THE AUTHORS Senator Phil Gramm is an economist by training and has had a long and distinguished career in public service, academia and the private sector. Senator Gramm was the vice chairman of UBS Investment Bank, where he provided strategic economic, political and policy advice to important corporate and institutional clients. He served in the US Congress representing Texas for more than two decades, first as the 6th congressional district representative to the US House of Representatives, then later as senator. His legislative record includes landmark bills like the Gramm-Latta Budget – which reduced federal spending, rebuilt national defense and mandated the Reagan tax cut – and the Gramm-Rudman Act, which placed the first binding constraints on federal spending. As chairman of the Senate Banking Committee, Sen. Gramm steered legislation modernizing banking, insurance and securities laws. The Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act amended the 70-year-old Glass-Steagall Act,  allowing banks, security companies and insurance companies to affiliate through a financial services holding company.  Sen. Gramm taught economics at Texas A&M University for 12 years before becoming a member of Congress. He has published numerous articles and books on subjects ranging from private property, monetary theory and policy to the economics of mineral extraction. As a visiting scholar at AEI, he will be working on a comprehensive plan to fix the US economy through reform of the tax code and entitlement programs such as Social Security and Medicare. John F. Early is a mathematical economist, president of the consultancy Vital Few, LLC, and an adjunct scholar at the Cato Institute. Early has also served twice as assistant commissioner at the Bureau of Labor Statistics where he directed the statistical design, economic analysis, and survey operations for the Consumer Price Index (CPI), the Consumer Expenditure Survey (CES), Point of Purchase Survey (POPS), and estimates of pre‐retail price changes. ABOUT THE BOOK Everything you know about income inequality, poverty, and other measures of economic well-being in America is wrong. In this provocative book, a former United States senator, eminent economist, and a former senior leader at the Bureau of Labor Statistics challenge the prevailing consensus that income inequality is a growing threat to American society. By taking readers on a deep dive into the way government measures economic well-being, they demonstrate that our official statistics dramatically overstate inequality. Getting the facts straight reveals that the key measures of well-being are greater than the official statistics of the country would lead us to believe. Income inequality is lower today than at any time in post- World War II America. The facts reveal a very different and better America than the one that is currently described by policy advocates across much of the political spectrum. The Myth of American Inequality provides clear and convincing evidence that the American Dream is alive and well.

BIO: Eric Sim is the author of Small Actions: Leading Your Career To Big Success, giving 66 actionable tips to help one achieve career success. STORY: Eric bought a condo with the hopes of selling it at a higher price. Unfortunately, the government changed, affecting the demand for condos. Eric is yet to sell the property or rent it for income. LEARNING: Don't let your past successes blind you when investing. Identify your buyer before you even buy that real estate.   “Never expect 100% of your investments to make money. Sometimes you lose, sometimes you win.”Eric Sim  Guest profilehttps://www.linkedin.com/in/simeric/ (Eric Sim) is the author of https://amzn.to/3dO0EQO (Small Actions: Leading Your Career To Big Success), giving 66 actionable tips to help one achieve career success. He is a successful banker, having worked with Citi in Singapore, Shanghai, and Hong Kong before joining UBS Investment Bank as a managing director. Worst investment everEric bought a massive piece of property north of Singapore. It was a 2,400-square foot home. It did well because demand was high. One year later, Eric decided to buy another property. The prices had gone up this time, and he paid a lot more for the second property. There had been plans to construct a high-speed rail from Singapore to Malaysia. This saw properties in Malaysia increase in demand. About three years later, the Malaysian government changed. The new government put the high-speed rail plans on hold. This saw property prices drop due to low demand and high supply. Eric tried to sell his property but couldn't as there was no demand. He wanted to rent it out, but it was just not worth it because prepping the property to rent it out would cost 1-2 years of rental income. He is still holding onto the property. Lessons learnedDon't let your past successes blind you when investing. Before you buy property, seriously think about the demand. Who will buy that property when you want to sell it one or two years later? Never expect 100% of your investments to make money. Sometimes you lose, sometimes you win, so don't be too hard on yourself. Don't let one lousy investment ruin your life. Andrew's takeawaysSometimes investing in condos can be a trap where you just get into it because you're excited and then get stuck in it because nobody will buy it. Identify your buyer before you even buy that real estate property. Actionable adviceDo your due diligence and make the correct type of comparison. Previously, when based in Hong Kong, Sim served as a managing director at UBS Investment Bank and an adjunct associate professor of finance at HKUST. He founded the Institute of Life with a mission to train young professionals to be successful at work and in life. I met Eric Sim one year ago when I left my corporate career and needed a coach to help me navigate my social media presence. I saw a clubhouse event he was organizing. I checked his Linked profile and could not believe that he had more than 2 million followers. I registered, and he invited me to ask my questions on the stage during the event. This is how we connected. In the following months, Eric helped me crystalize my strategy and fine-tune my goals. I established many valuable connections with his help. And he gave me the confidence to start writing on LinkedIn. I have never met Eric in person, but I always wanted to share his story – from his humble beginnings to the powerhouse he is today. He made the portfolio career “a thing.” When we were recording, I asked him to walk me through the stages of preparation and execution when he was leaving banking. The answer was not what I expected! Eric said the first thing he did was design his new company's logo and print the business cards. He knew he was ready to leave the banking job when he confidently handed out these new cards, accepting his new future. His three key takeaways for success in any career pivot are three “S”: - Build your Social capital well before you need it - Build your Social media presence - Build your Social network Please tune in to hear his fascinating journey. LISTEN NOW!! Gabriel is one of those Individuals who didn't follow the typical path, he paved his own. When he started his career he had little aspiration to become CEO. One decision led to another and brought him to where he is today as CEO of Milestone; focused on carbon sequestration and sustainably managing energy waste streams. Gabriel grew up immersed in the chemical Industry, both his father and grandfather worked for Dow Chemical.Gabriel had a love for music and found himself having to decide which direction he wanted to take his life. He quickly came to realize he wasn't going to be the next rockstar but his love for math and science proved to be a more realistic path for him. He talks about following your passions all while figuring it out as you go, at times your passions might change but you only know till you try. Gabriel decided to pursue chemical engineering and dive headfirst into the business world. At 24 years old, right after 9/11 and the Enron collapsed , Gabriel packed up his bags and left Houston to move to New york. He struggled to find a job, he was in a new state during a recession and had a few months of savings left. Instead of leaving New York he kept pushing forward, 8 months later he landed a position in investment banking. Throughout Gabriel's story you can find where he connects each change in his life to the next movement in his career. While working in investment banking he learns about the oil and gas industry, particularly on the environmental waste management side of the business. He found himself learning more about the business while working at Three Cities Research. At this firm he was very hands on in helping companies grow to their full potential. Here is where his story changes, where he went from working as a partner to stirring up his own plans to start a business. Gabriel talks about calculated risks and how he applied this strategy throughout his career to becoming CEO of Milestone today. He shares the biggest lessons he learned along the way and the challenges he faced. He gives us his best advice and the impact his relationships have had on his success. Gabriel said, “ Develop strong relationships with the people that you work with and hang around, as you continue to build your career. I have found that my career has been built more off of the people that I've worked with rather than the companies that I've worked for and that's what carried me and a lot of people I know, through our careers”. Gabriel has over a decade of experience in the oil and gas environmental services industry. He is currently the President and CEO of Milestone Environmental Services, LLC. Prior to leading Milestone, Gabriel worked as an Operating Partner with Intervale Capital, now known as Amberjack Capital, an oilfield-focused private equity fund with $1.2 billion in assets under management, and a key investor in Milestone. He was previously the Executive Vice President of Strategy and Business Development for R360 Environmental Solutions, Inc., a national provider of environmental services to the E&P industry. At R360, Gabriel orchestrated the strategy and mergers and acquisitions work which led to the formation and rapid growth of the company, and directly managed Williston Basin operations. After R360 completed a $1.3 billion sale to Waste Connections, Inc., Gabriel assumed work with the buyer to help with the integration of the R360 business into Waste Connections. Prior to R360's formation in 2010, he was an investment professional with Three Cities Research, Inc., a mid-market private equity firm, where he was principally responsible for US Liquids of LA, LP, a regional oilfield waste treatment and disposal provider in Louisiana and Texas.Earlier in his career, Gabriel worked as an Associate Equity Research Analyst covering the global chemical industry at UBS Investment Bank, as a Petroleum Practice Fellow with McKinsey & Company a global strategy consultancy, and as an Associate at Purvin & Gertz, a Houston-based oil and gas consultancy. Gabriel holds a Bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of Texas at Austin.Gabriel lives in Houston with his wife Mona, two daughters, and two Great Danes.
