From Hospice to Thriving with Dr. Al Danenberg

Today we're visiting with Dr. Al Danenberg.  Dr. Al suffered a stroke at the age of 59 and was doing okay for the next few years, but he was still on 7 medications. At the age of 66, he discovered the Paleo lifestyle and was able to lose 30 pounds and get off of all of his medications.   Fast forward a few more years, and he started having some pains that he thought was a sprain or tear.  An MRI showed multiple fractures and a mass on his spine, and soon he was diagnosed with multiple myeloma.  This brought him to research more kinds of unconventional cancer protocols, which had much better results than chemo would have.  He had a horrible accident with his brittle bones and went into hospice, intending to die.  After being evacuated to his home in the midst of Hurricane Dorian, his wife gave him some tough love and he rallied.  By the next month he was able to walk back into his oncologist's office and start a new medication.  His next PET scan showed no active cancer cells through his entire body.  Today, he's thriving, although he has many limitations and is not cured. As a dentist, Dr. Al has been exposed to a lot of low-level radiation, which is known to turn lymphocytes cancerous, as well as using mercury amalgam fillings for many years.  Dentists in his age range have a much higher occurrence of cancer than other professions. Mercury fillings are a health time bomb.  If you have mercury fillings, IAOMT.org to find a dentist in your area certified in removing mercury fillings safely. In this episode of The Healers Café, Dr. Manon Bolliger, ND, chats with "Dr. Al" Danenberg, Periodontist, Certified Functional Medicine Practitioner, Certified Primal Health Coach, ADAPT Trained Health Professional & Author of CRAZY-GOOD LIVING!  Listen to the full story today! https://www.drmanonbolliger.com/dr-al-denenberg   Highlights from today's episode include: Dr Al Danenberg (10:09): The studies are basically four weeks. They were designed differently, but they serve the same purpose and showed the same facts. And that is the subjects in the study did not, and could not brush or floss or cheat for four weeks. They were only allowed the experimental group was only allowed to eat a healthier diet that consisted of very low carbohydrates, no added sugars and a variety of fruits, vegetables, nuts seeds, and basically good fats. The control group continued with their standard American diet eating, lots of carbs, lots of sugar and so on and so forth. Basically the entire group had active gum disease starting the program after four weeks without brushing and cleaning their mouth. Dr Al Danenberg (14:27): That's true. I'm here to scream my story. That's the story of how the gut, really the gut is actually the cause of almost every chronic disease that you can imagine. And if we can treat the gut appropriately, that means not only treat the damage in the gut, but put the food that your body needs into your body and remove the irritants, or at least avoid the irritants that are going to damage the gut. And there are other factors of damage to the gut It's not just what you eat. It's, you know, it's electromagnetic fields, it's chemicals. It's stress, it's poor exercise to over-exercise will damage the gut. Poor sleep habits will damage the gut. So there are a variety of things that will damage the gut. But if you can understand what's causing the damage and you can get control over that, you can control your life amazingly well without, without supplements and all kinds of gimmicks and gadgets that everybody wants to sell you. Dr Al Danenberg (25:04): Actually, dental plaque serves three main functions. It serves as a gatekeeper to actually allow minerals from the saliva, get into the root surface. So if there's any need for it to remineralized the tooth root surface, it can do that. Now, minerals, if you just have a toothpaste with added minerals in it, it has no value whatsoever. And you take supplements with minerals, probably no real value whatsoever, but we need to eat food that has the minerals that are bioactive, that gets absorbed into your blood system. And a lot of it gets deposited into your soul salivary glands. So when you salivate, which you do 24 hours a day, seven days a week, of course, different flows for different times of the day. This mineral, these minerals that are in the saliva can get into the root surface, but the plaque kind of distributes the minerals as is necessary.   About Dr. Al Danenberg “Dr. Al” Danenberg is a periodontist and was in private practice for 44 years. Today we're joined by Dr. Al Danenberg to continue our conversation on his overcoming terminal cancer with the help of a carnivore diet. Jill Lane discusses ways to prepare your student athlete to return to team sports and practices. Carnivore Diet (cont.) We continue the conversation with Dr. Al Danenberg. He beat terminal bone marrow cancer, and credits his diet as a huge factor in his recovery. Dr. Danenberg is on a carnivore diet, which is strictly animal products. For example a few of his diet staples include eggs, pork belly, oxtail cooked in bone broth, chicken liver and sardines. It’s important to include all parts of the animal in the diet. He also practices intermittent fasting from 8pm to 1pm. If you’re not a fan of organ meats, Dr. Danenberg recommends Enviromedica’s Bone Marrow Complex and Organ Meat supplements. He’s written a guide, The 30-day Transition to a Carnivore Diet, to help transition to this way of eating. For instance, Dr. Danenberg says there is a flu-like withdrawal when you stop eating carbs. He suggest slowly transitioning to avoid adverse side-effects. Begin by eliminating all flour-based foods, then any added sugar, followed by legumes. All processed seed oils are next as you transition to using animal fats. Once you eliminate these foods, you are essentially on a carnivore diet. Bernadette reminds us that diet isn’t everything. Emotional stress causes systemic inflammation, so keep an eye on your stress level, eating habits and exercise routine for the best results. If you want to know Dr. Al's protocol for staying healthy, get his book, Crazy Good Living!: Healthy Gums, Healthy Gut, Healthy Life.   Just email info@oneliferadio.com for a copy of his guide for transitioning to a carnivore diet. Student Athlete Performance Tips We are so happy to have Jill Lane back on One Life Radio. She and Bernadette discuss how to prepare your child for school sports again after quarantine. She says to perform well, you need to be well. At her company, Performing Champions, she works with students and parents on the physical, mental and social needs of each child. For instance, in high school, confidence plays into performance. If your child lacks confidence, there are methods for helping them build self-esteem. Acknowledge what is individually great about them every day, for one. She also encourages parents to talk to coaches about how they plan to run practices after quarantine. It’s easy to get injured or dehydrated if pushed too hard. Try also keeping an eye on your child’s sleep patterns, hydration and hygiene practices. At Fueling Champions, Jill looks at all of these factors when helping a child perform at the optimal level. Here's another great interview with Jill discussing warning signs your student athlete isn't getting enough food. Elle Russ chats with fellow Primal Health Coach Dr. Alvin Danenberg DDS - otherwise known as Dr. Dan to his patients. He divides his career into two periods: before and after a unique periodontal laser procedure coupled with the dynamics of ancestral nutrition. The laser-based LANAP® protocol and the importance of ancestral nutrition, he believes, are revolutionizing the treatment of gum disease. His book, Crazy-Good Living, is based on ancestral nutrition and lifestyle. It incorporates his Four Pillars of Health: (1) nutrient-dense, anti-inflammatory foods, (2) restorative sleep, (3) efficient exercise, and (4) stress reduction. Dr. Dan's passion for periodontics in general, combined with evolutionary nutrition and lifestyle, is palpable. He currently sees patients at Bluffton Center for Dentistry in Bluffton, SC. To further his education in ancestral nutrition and lifestyle, he received advanced training at the Kripalu Center for Yoga and Health as well as The Center for Mind-Body Medicine. In 2014, he received a Certified Functional Medicine Practitioner designation and then the Primal Health Coach Certification. In 2015, he was appointed to the faculty of the College of Integrative Medicine and created the college's integrative periodontal teaching module. Then, in April 2017, he earned the designation of “ADAPT Trained Health Professional from Kresser Institute, the only functional medicine, and evolutionary health training company”. Dr. Al, as his patients call him, has been a periodontist for over four decades. He divides his career into two periods: before and after a unique periodontal laser procedure coupled with the dynamics of ancestral nutrition. The laser-based LANAP® protocol and the importance of ancestral nutrition, he believes, are revolutionizing the treatment of gum disease. “LANAP, which is an acronym for Laser Assisted New Attachment Procedure, is reengineering how I treat periodontal disease. This procedure helps the body regrow bone around the infected teeth without cutting the gums and without stitches. And, the fact that ancestral nutrition is the basis for total body health is mind boggling.”   Elektra Press published the print copy of his book, Crazy-Good Living, on October 11, 2017. It is based on ancestral nutrition and lifestyle. It incorporates his Four Pillars of Health: (1) nutrient-dense, anti-inflammatory foods, (2) restorative sleep, (3) efficient exercise, and (4) stress reduction. It is available at all booksellers and online stores including Amazon. Dr. Danenberg currently sees patients at Bluffton Center for Dentistry in Bluffton, SC.
