We discuss my own ADHD diagnosis, how our brains differ from neurotypical brains, and how fasting helps me with mental energy. I go into more of the supporting evidence I have collected over time, and I also share my brain mapping results with Dr. Sam Effarah which demonstrated that my ADD symptoms were indeed worse after I broke my fast. You'll want to listen to this one no matter who you are because it really is incredible all the benefits we gain from fasting, and the way it improves mental energy is undeniable. #81: My Depression Confession, PMS & Emotions, with Marisa MoonBrief Summary and Bio:This is my depression confession. (NOTE: There's a video for this episode you can find on YouTube: https://youtu.be/o4uJmvaA2L4Or on our facebook page https://www.facebook.com/FoundationofWellnessPodcast). I feel like there's something missing in the content out there right now; a vulnerability and authenticity that represents how many of us are feeling lately. I can't be the only one going through this. I have a tendency towards depression. Thankfully it hasn't been full blown or chronic for many years, lasting no longer than a few weeks at a time. And my most recent one was just last week. My depression seems to always turn up in one of two cases. Primarily, it's when my big plans get interrupted. Secondarily, it's around my cycle. Listen to this episode to learn what it was like for me, what I believe the trigger to be, and how I got out of it.Host: Marisa Moon is a Certified Primal Health Coach and host/producer of The Foundation of Wellness podcast. Brief Summary & Bio:In this episode, Certified Health Coach Anya Perry talks about Habits vs Routines, and the up's and down's of habit formation. She explains the difference between being your own leader instead of a victim of your circumstances, why we should plan to fail (because it's gonna happen), what your all-or-nothing mindset or being a “monday starter” is doing to your habits and routines; and she teaches her concept of identifying your “hinging” points. I love it. Anya is a certified health coach, USA weightlifting and CrossFit coach. Anya battled boring diets, low energy, and declining health for over 10 years before she found what works. Now, she helps women achieve their dream state of health, fitness, and vitality… without the struggles, battles of miserable diets, and yo-yo results. She's been focusing her coaching on entrepreneurs who work from home and struggle to get systems and routines in place; which I think is really applicable right now because so many of us are being forced to work remotely due to the coronavirus. So now we have to be even more able to self-manage and stay on track with our habits and goals. Even thinking about starting new routines or continuing habits you had before can be so seemingly impossible at this time. Having Anya here gives us great ideas and helps to inspire us. Brief Summary & Bio:Today is such an amazing interview with Dallas Hartwig to talk about the concepts in his new book called “The 4 Season Solution: The Groundbreaking New Plan for Feeling Better, Living Well, and Powering Down our Always-On Lives”. We talk about small yet significant lifestyle changes we can make, in accordance with the seasons and our biological needs; and we get into some conversation about the typical Mid-Life crisis, as well as how this quarantine time we're being forced into living is perfectly matched up with the contents of this book. Dallas Hartwig is the cofounder of the Whole30 and Whole9 programs, the coauthor of New York Times bestsellers “It Starts With Food” and “The Whole30”. Dallas is a functional medicine practitioner and physical therapist, he's also the cohost of The Living Experiment podcast. It can be good or bad behavior you crave based on your current habits- Dallas shares an ancestral point of view that emphasizes the lack of external cues and our personal responsibility to shift into balance- Dallas' ETRE recommendations (Early Time-Restricted Eating, AKA Circadian Fasting or Intermittent Fasting)Intro/Exit Music - "Ukulele Whistle" by Scott Holmes

This information and recording is for informational and educational purposes only.Points of Discussion:5 Key Markers for Metabolic Syndrome (3 qualifies you):1. Low HDL Cholesterol (40 for men, 50 for women)2. High Triglycerides (over 150, standard lipid panel)3. Obesity - Waist Circumference4. High Blood Pressure5. High Blood Sugar (elevated A1C, or elevated fasting glucose; pre-diabetic or diabetic)- High “Waist Circumference” - fat around abdomen, visceral fat, is most dangerous - Insulin Resistance is a big driver- What is Insulin Resistance - Analogy - Insulin is building or “anabolic” - Fat Storing Hormone - Eating Carbohydrates (and protein) raises blood sugar and requires more insulin. - Cells become resistant to insulin. - Body keeps producing insulin, sugar levels stay high, cells don't use insulin - Can increase blood pressure and inflammation and leads to other Metabolic Syndrome problems- The biggest thing to consider with Metabolic Syndrome is “Is Insulin a Factor Here” because it could be other things like nutrient deficiencies, oxidative stress - Insulin Resistance is the #1 factor and needs to be addressed first- What are the signs of Metabolic Syndrome or Insulin Resistance? - Obesity or Beer Belly, it's just a matter of “when” not “if” - Dr. Kraft (not like the foods) lab documentation comparing fasting insulin numbers and A1C showing insulin resistance 10 years in advance (60% tested with normal A1C and fasting glucose still had some degree of insulin resistance) - By the time you're diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, you're in stage 4 of insulin resistance- “Fasting Insulin” is an additional lab you'll have to request from your doctor (most are only running fasting glucose and A1C) - Score ideally under 8 (standard US units) but doctor will say you're normal under 15- Waist Circumference - Across the belly button, not the hips. - > 40 inches for men, > 35 inches for women; slightly less for Asians because they get obesity/metabolic syndrome at a lower waist circumference.- How does Metabolic Syndrome affect your life? - puts you at a much higher risk for type 2 diabetes - higher risk for strokes, heart attacks, alzheimer's, dementia, death - Alzheimer's is still without a cure - Dale Bredesen “The End of Alzheimer's” - testing alone is $3-5K, supplements $200-300 a month, and additional intervention costs - Best thing is prevention- Even with only 1 or 2 of the Metabolic Syndrome criteria, you still need to worry and take action- Estimated that more than half of the population is either pre-diabetic or diabetic- Lack of sleep, chronic stress, chronic inflammation, environmental toxins, processed foods; so many factors working against us in modern life- Are these conditions reversible? - Yes, and quickly - Off diabetic drugs and without diabetic labs in 6 months- Michael works with a difficult population segment: truck drivers - Even people with double-digit A1C; normal is in the low “5's”. Even people with numbers off the charts. - Hundreds of people reversing diabetes with his help - People reversing high blood pressure, getting off statin drugs- American Diabetes Association, new journal of care 2020, new definition for “remission.” Finally admitting that's possible. - Remission is Normal A1C with no drugs for 12 months, is full remission; a pre-diabetic with no drugs is partial remission- The #1 Thing anyone can do is simple but not easy: - Lower your carbohydrates, get rid of processed foods- “The 3 Public Enemies of Health” - Processed Oils, canola, soybean, corn oil, safflower - Processed Sugars - Grains - IF he could only pick 2 it would be grains and processed oils - Grains are lacking nutrition, they're inflammatory, destructive to gut health and insulin - Processed oils are so inflammatory and disrupting hormones - Focus on those two and you'll end up cutting sugars too - Maybe you're not low carb yet, but to take it to the next level you go “Keto” to reverse your conditions - Fasting is another strategy to try- What to eat on the go? - Canned Seafood (canned seafood is always wild caught) without toxic oils (olive oil, salt, water, okay) - Pressure Canned grass-fed meats - avocados - nuts and seeds - leafy greens - fermented foods - Rotisserie Chicken (spend on organic wherever possible like at Whole Foods Market $9.99) - Use the carcass to make bone broth - Seek out Salad Bars (make olive oil + vinegar dressing)- What's the motivation? - Truck drivers can lose their commercial license without good medical records/lab results - Up until recently, if you were insulin-dependent you couldn't drive on the interstate but they're loosening the restrictions because so many people have it - Michael's Dad's radio show: Trucking Business and Beyond on XM Sirius 146 (monday through friday) - How many people in your life suffer when your health suffers? - Annual average cost of care for type 2 diabetic is over $10K (this cost alone can bankrupt the US) - When your health declines you will take more sick days, can't play with your kids or grandkids - you don't want your loved ones to have to take care of you or help pay your bills- Exercise - A single bout of heavy lifting increases insulin sensitivity for 48 hours- Michael's team has an online course about resolving Metabolic Syndrome completely - Learn.letstruck.comResources:- Learn.letstruck.com- Dale Bredesen Book: “The End of Alzheimer's”- Instagram @rutherford_ntp: https://www.instagram.com/rutherford_ntp - healthytribe.com The Fasting for Freedom summit starts March 2nd, 2020, and it's totally Free. #71: High-Intensity vs Low-Intensity Exercise, with Fitness Trainer Adrienne HanoverIntro, Summary, Bio:I'm happy to introduce you today to my longtime friend and former collaborative partner Adrienne Hanover. I asked her on the podcast today because so many of you expressed interest in learning about high intensity vs low intensity exercise. I posted a poll inside my facebook group, The Foundation of Wellness, and the top request, to my surprise, was high intensity vs low intensity training. And since I am not a fitness excerpt or personal trainer, I wanted to bring someone on who's fun to talk to, relatable, and experienced in the fitness industry. In this episode Adrienne explains the difference between High and Low Intensity training, why she prefers to call it High Impact and Low Impact training, who should train for what, and what PHAT is. Adrienne is no stranger to the fitness world. Having started her career in fitness in 1995 as a personal trainer, group fitness instructor and fitness nutrition coach. Adrienne's certifications are with NASM (National Academy of Sports Medicine). She's attained her personal training, Corrective Exercise Specialist, Performance Enhancement Specialist and Fitness Nutrition Specialist. >>> Join me inside my new facebook group: “The Foundation of Wellness - a Refreshing Diet & Lifestyle Chat”facebook.com/groups/FOWpodcastFor professional Inquiries contact host Marisa Moon, marisa@ marisamoon.com;Points of Discussion:- What's High Intensity Interval Training?- Is Low Intensity Exercise as Effective?- Intensity is Subjective- “Impact” isn't as subjective- High-Intensity with warmup 20-25 minutes- Low-Intensity minimum 30 minutes or break it up throughout the day - “The Talk Test” - Heart rate up enough to feel like you're working, but you can still talk.- The gas/driving analogy- High intensity or High Impact is not recommended with injuries- Work your way up to High Intensity, it's not for beginners - HIIT workouts online might be a good at-home test, try one round instead of the full workout - Listen to your body, you shouldn't get dizzy or sick with high-intensity - Take the modifications in a class so you don't push too hard too fast - Ignore others' intensity and focus on what your body is telling you- Listener questions: - Difference between High & Low Intensity - Remember: High intensity pulls from your body's sugar stores (limited energy supply). Low Intensity pulls from fat stores (virtually unlimited supply) - What's the least amount of time needed and how does she know if she's in the zone? - You'll be burning fat no matter what, but more in low intensity - PHAT: Peripheral Heart Action Training - Strength Training, alternating upper to lower body - Key is to keep it moving - Little-to-no rest between - No compound movements - You're making the heart work to switch blood volume from lower to upper body - 45 minutes - You should be sweating - Start with larger muscles to smaller muscles - PHAT is a one-stop-shop and the equivalent to HIIT without the high impact moves or much risk of injury - “Maffetone Formula”, Aerobic Heart Rate Max, Calculated 180-Age = target heart rate for low-intensity and fat burning - Tip: easier on your joints to put the treadmill on slight incline - Which is better for building muscle? - High intensity requires power which helps trigger muscle growth - Low Intensity can include strength training and build muscle too - Fast Twitch vs Slow Twitch Muscle Fibers are Genetic Predispositions which can affect how your body responds - Big difference between muscle “strength” and muscle “endurance”. PHAT is more about endurance. - Remember to change it up - Don't “overtrain” or you risk breaking down muscle for energy - Weight-training is where it's at - help's with bone density, stability, metabolism, longevity - Remember protein 30-120 minutes after working out - 80% of your body composition is determined by what you eat - Don't ruin the efforts of your workout with crap food - “Compensation theory” shows the brain triggering you to eat more calories and more carbs following a workout - You will be more hungry the more you workout. Make wise choices. - Don't eat too closely to a workout (at least an hour before or more)- Follow Adrienne's Postpartum Journey after twins and gaining 80 lbs. #70: Relieve Chronic Muscular Pain, What's Fascia? with Eric Owens, Delos TherapyBrief Summary & Guest Bio:Eric Owens is a co-founder of Delos Therapy, where Delos Therapists relieve clients of chronic muscular pain, inflammation, and dysfunction using mechanical pressure to pinpoint muscle tightness, known as “knots” or hyper-contracted fascia, to restore muscle pliability. Eric is also a co-founder of sister company, Delos Robotics, which is a robotics and AI approach to automate Delos Therapy treatments alleviating chronic pain for the masses. He graduated from Midwestern University with a Master's Degree in biomedical science. In today's episode Eric talks about what's wrong with foam rolling and traditional massage, as well as various pain-relief techniques. He teaches us what fascia is, what a healthy muscle should be like, and what to do about it at home and with a practitioner. ** Free Evaluation at Delos Therapy, Chicago (usually $30)Email info@delostherapy.com tell them “Marisa from the Foundation of Wellness Podcast” sent you for free evaluation, any location you want; 20-minute appointment, they'll discuss your condition and history, then 10-15 minutes of a sample treatment (that's almost a full treatment!)Delostherapy.com to choose locations (you may call to schedule, too)>>> Join me inside my new facebook group: “The Foundation of Wellness - a Refreshing Diet & Lifestyle Chat” : facebook.com/groups/FOWpodcastFor professional Inquiries contact host Marisa Moon, marisa@ marisamoon.com;Points of Discussion:- Eric's Father is the original inventor of the Delos Therapy technique, he was a mechanical and electrical engineer looking for solutions to his chronic pain - Muscles in their healthy state are soft, pliable, and spongy (when flexed it should be hard) - Imaging doesn't show differences in muscle states - Direct pressure into the hard muscle is effective - His Father worked on Evander Holyfield and many famous athletes- Pain is complex, multi-factorial. Many causes of pain like neurological, structural, muscular. - In medicine there's not a specialty in muscles and fascia- Patients should seek out multi-modalities for treatment- Most chronic pain has a muscular component that's overlooked- Dense fibrotic tissue in the middle of that muscle won't stretch, it's deep in the muscle- Stretching and foam rolling won't help eliminate muscular pain- What to expect in Delos Therapy Treatments?- Marisa shares her story about using Delos Therapy to treat her Piriformis Syndrome, a knot in the hip/glute muscle causing nerve pain similar to Sciatica- Eric explains Muscle Fascia - Fascia is layered under, and embedded in fat - first layer is superficial fascia - directly below that is fascia profunda - Muscle is wrapped in fascia in many ways - Each tiny muscle cell/fiber is wrapped in fascia to hold them together to make a muscle fascicle - Fascia wraps the muscle fascicle together to make your entire muscle - Muscle Fascia contains 6-10 times sensory nerves than muscle tissue - All pain and proprioception is communicated through fascia to your brain - Everything is moving towards the idea that “repetitive use of muscle tissue causes a fibrosis, a hardening of the tissue inside the muscle; and that pressure directly into it at multiple angles is by far the most effective way to break all that apart”.- How to treat muscle pain and fibrosis? - Foam rolling only affects the superficial layer and hydration - Modern foam rollers have “nubs” on them and suggest that you apply direct pressure instead of rolling - The fibrosis is deeply embedded in that muscle - Targeted pressure is the only way; think “3 dimensional” instead of stretching or massaging, target the fibrotic muscle in every direction - The direction and angle of the pressure are critical - Gliding across like a swedish massage doesn't work- Delos Therapy locations, expansion plans in Colorado and California- Delos Therapy plans for Robotics- Practical At-Home Advice - The Knobble, on Amazon: https://amzn.to/3azUqOj - Theracane or Hook Cane, on Amazon: https://amzn.to/2Ge2iHh - La Crosse Ball, on Amazon: https://amzn.to/2RjbeS1 - Advice for seeking a practitioner - Look up “Rolfing” near you (invented by Dr. Ida Rolf) which is similar to Delos Therapy - Clinical Massage Therapists will usually hold pressure but not often enough; gliding isn't for pain relief- Should you expect relief immediately?- Should you Ice? - Certain inflammation can be good because it is meant to stimulate healing - If it's unbearable or you have something important to do, after therapy you can ice- How much is Stress causing your flare-ups and pain? - Is it coming from the brain? Is your mind telling you the stress is causing pain? - There's an emotional component to pain - The pain came from muscle fibrosis, but is exacerbated by stress- Sleep is absolutely critical for repair - Go to bed and wake up at the same time - Consider a sleep tracker like the Oura Ring- Muscle Health isn't about being stronger, flexible, or having more endurance. Muscle health is about PLIABILITY. It's the core of all of those things. - If you're NOT feeling stiff, do a self-examination: push into muscle tissue checking if tissue is all soft and pliable. If not, work on pliability.Resources:- DelosTherapy.com- Instagram @delostherapychicago: instagram.com/delostherapychicago- Facebook : facebook.com/DelosTherapy- Free Evaluation at Delos Therapy: Email info@delostherapy.com and say “Marisa from the Foundation of Wellness Podcast” sent you- The Knobble, on Amazon: https://amzn.to/3azUqOj- Theracane or Hook Cane, on Amazon: https://amzn.to/2Ge2iHh - La Crosse Ball, on Amazon: https://amzn.to/2RjbeS1 - Oura Ring: https://ouraring.com *** Marisa can be your health coach! #67 Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy for Brain Disorders, Traumatic Injuries, Anti-Aging and More with Dr. Lenny CohenSummary & Guest Bio:Today, Dr Cohen explains what hyperbaric oxygen therapy is, why he's so passionate about it, what the benefits are, and why oxygen is so important to heal and rejuvenate our body. This is especially important for anyone with traumatic brain injury or concussion, children and adults with neurological disorders or autism, and persons with diabetic wounds or circulatory issues. It seems to be an incredible anti-aging strategy that's also popular with athletes and high performers. Dr. Lenny Cohen is the founder, the medical director, and the brains behind RevIVeDoc, a med spa and custom IV infusion center and Lakeshore Hyperbaric Center, both located in Chicago, IL. He is board certified by the American Association of Psychiatry and Neurology with a focus on anti-aging, as well as body and brain wellness. You can learn more from Dr Cohen on our previous interview where he explained the benefits of IV vitamin therapy and concerns about increased oxidative stress in our bodies, and that interview is on episode #57 on The Foundation of Wellness.… Join me inside my new facebook group: “The Foundation of Wellness - a Refreshing Diet & Lifestyle Chat”facebook.com/groups/FOWpodcastFor professional Inquiries contact - Marisa Moon, Certified Primal Health Coach: marisa@marisamoon.com;Disclaimer: Consult with your doctor or functional medicine practitioner before trying any of the remedies or dietary interventions mentioned in this episode. This information and recording is for informational and educational purposes only.Points of Discussion:- Oxygen, how can we use it for medical therapies?- Hyperbaric Chambers are similar to the pressure you experience inside an airplane during flight - The increase in pressure will increase the amount of oxygen distributed into your body- In Medical school, Dr. Cohen always believed a pill can solve everything, but now he realizes there are more things we can do to improve our health.- Father was diagnosed with alzheimer's dementia, sparked his interest in research for hyperbaric therapy- Thousands of international articles and research on hyperbaric therapy online at pubmed.gov- Marisa inquires about why we can't just breathe in more oxygen by taking deep breaths, and what the pressure does to help? - You can't just breathe in more air because oxygen concentration in the air is always 20% - Boyle's Law: Absorption of gas is directly proportionate to pressure of the gas. Thus, lower pressure makes it more difficult to absorb oxygen, higher pressure makes it easier. - Hyperbaric chambers start with 100% Oxygen Concentration in the air- Benefits range from decreasing inflammation, higher oxygen concentration in the blood and free radical scavenging and prevention/reduction of disease. - Does Hyperbaric therapy work after just one session?- FDA approved for a few conditions including Carbon Monoxide poisoning- Anemia patient story- Cancer patient, post-radiation example- Is this treatment covered by insurance?- First FDA approved condition was the “Bends” or Caisson disease- Story: Child with traumatic brain injury- Ideal candidates include brain injury, neurological disorders and autism, lyme disease, diabetic wounds, and circulatory conditions or cardiovascular events - Cardiovascular patients are shown to improve with conventional treatment combined with hyperbaric therapy- Science shows that stem cells are produced in the blood after hyperbaric treatments- Hip replacement surgery might be unnecessary if treated with hyperbaric therapy- Hyperbaric therapy can reduce amyloid plaque and possibly prevent alzheimer's and dementia - Dr. Cohen recommends starting in your 50's, decades before a diagnosis- Hyperbaric therapy works directly and indirectly - stimulates collagen growth in your body - stimulates stem cells or bone cells - indirectly affects intracellular signaling to allow cells to function more optimally - Studies show it can help parkinson's disease, stroke recovery, fibromyalgia, mood and decrease in depression, and enhance neuronal activity- Lakeshore hyperbaric uses Hard chamber, plexiglass, but other places use soft chambers and Dr. Cohen doesn't recommend it- Dr. Cohen shares a story of child on the autism spectrumResources: Lakeshore Hyperbaric Center: http://www.chicagohyperbaric.com RevIVeDoc Chicago: https://www.therevivedoc.com >> Looking for Toxin-Free Low-Sugar Natural Wine?? #64: Heart & Cholesterol Confusion, Dr. Stephen Hussey Demystifies Heart Attacks & High CholesterolShort Summary & Bio:Today we're here to get clear on what is causing heart attacks and heart disease, and what do we need to know about cholesterol in our bodies and cholesterol levels on our blood tests. Our guest, Dr Stephen Hussey is a repeat expert we love to have on, find his other interviews on episodes #40 and #61.Dr Hussey is a Functional Medicine practitioner and Chiropractor. He attained both his Doctorate of Chiropractic and Masters in Human Nutrition and Functional Medicine from the University of Western States in Portland, OR. He is a health coach, speaker, and the author of two books on health; The Health Evolution: Why Understanding Evolution is the Key to Our Health; The Heart: Our Most Medically Misunderstood Organ (ebook)>> Looking for Toxin-Free Low-Sugar Natural Wine?? This information and recording is for informational and educational purposes only.Points of Discussion:- How conventional medicine is missing major understandings about heart health and heart disease- Dr. Hussey's ebook- Blood clots, heart attacks, confusion - Georgio Baraldi Researcher vs Ancel Keys' Diet-Heart Hypothesis- Baraldi found people died of heart attacks with no blood clot - less than 50% of people with heart attacks had a clot - in the 50% of people with clots, the clot did not induce the heart attack - plastic cast study: found that when narrowing of arteries 70%+, the body built a collateral system of arteries to bypass it. - Biraldi's work is not studied in cardiology or medical school- Bypass surgery doesn't seem to prolong life or prevent future heart attacks- Dr. Hussey's take on Cholesterol and Plaque in Arteries - cholesterol is a miracle molecule with lots of benefits in the body - Leiden 85-Plus Study and Lothian Birth-Cohort Study show people with higher cholesterol have less disease and longer life - Cholesterol is distributed evenly in the body, even in veins, but we only find build-up in certain areas/arteries - The artery gets damaged from free-radicals, toxins, high carb diet, and other poor lifestyle choices - The body uses cholesterol to “patch” up the damage so cholesterol shouldn't be reduced- Having a discussion with your doctor - “There's no evidence that dietary saturated fat or cholesterol results in increased blood levels of cholesterol” - Look at triglycerides, HDL, and LDL. - High LDL is okay provided HDL is also high (> 50) and Triglycerides are low (< 100) - Look at markers of inflammation because it causes damage of arteries and deposits of cholesterol and calcium - High sensitivity C-Reactive protein - Homocysteine levels - Lipoprotein (a), pronounced “L.P. Little A” (a protein that gets attached to cholesterol molecule when it's damaged) - NMR lipid profile may be helpful - Insulin-Resistance Score - Instead of trying to lower cholesterol, try lowering inflammation instead - Prevent heart attacks and plaque in arteries by lowering intake of processed seed oils like canola, corn oil, soybean oil, sunflower oils with damaged fats. Lower sugar, refined carbohydrates, flour-based foods, and lower lifestyle-related stress.- Back to heart attacks and why many heart attack victims don't have a blood clot - What causes heart attacks with no clots present? - Not being fat-adapted whereas your body cannot use fat for energy - Increased oxidative stress - Imbalance in autonomic nervous system - Why is heart disease so common today? - Most-people are using mostly carbs for fuel, but the heart prefers fatty acids for fuel - Burning carbohydrates for fuel is pro-inflammatory and makes more free radical waste products; this increases oxidative stress - Signs of oxidative stress - general fatigue or lack of energy because mitochondria are damaged - chronic disease, especially fibromyalgia - heavy metal toxicity - eating lots of fried foods or charred meats - Oxidative stress depletes nitric oxide which is responsible for dilating blood vessels and plays key role in communicating our stress response to cells - Autonomic nervous system controls breathing, heart rates, dilation of arteries, stress response, etc… - requires balance to go from stress/threatening state to a relaxed state - If it's imbalanced, it can contribute to heart disease/heart attack - anxiety is a direct symptom of autonomic nervous system imbalance - heart-rate variability is a great way to track imbalances in your stress response - imbalance leads to other issues like insomnia, IBS or IBD, and more.- Dr. Hussey walks us through the cascade of events leading up to a hypothetical heart attack- What about people who run marathons or love endurance training? - Origin of the word Marathon - Book “Born to Run” about primitive runners in mexico - Be sure you're fat-adapted and only use glucose when you need to supplement during a race - Exercise is most beneficial when it's short term - Read “Primal Endurance” book to become fat-adapted- Why does LDL shoot up if you eat a paleo/primal/keto diet? - When you start to become fat-adapted, you make ketones and make more cholesterol - When your liver makes more cholesterol, it leaves more cholesterol in the blood - When you're fasting, it can increase cholesterol by 69% because we're making ketones and cholesterol - If you're a “lean mass hyper responder”, you will see even more cholesterol increase - All of the above is not something to worry about, but it is wise to look at the rest of your bloodwork like inflammation and oxidative stress, triglycerides under 100 and HDL above 50Resources: - Book an Appointment or Find Dr. Hussey at https://www.resourceyourhealth.com - Dry Farm Wines (Low Sugar Natural Wines) Penny Bottle: www.dryfarmwines.com/fowpodcast- The Health Evolution, Book by Dr. Stephen Hussey: https://amzn.to/2o0zGfh (amazon affiliate link)- The Heart, Ebook, by Dr. Stephen Hussey: https://amzn.to/2ppwnys (amazon affiliate link)- Primal Endurance book: https://amzn.to/2pidY7j - Born to Run book: https://amzn.to/36fQDU9 Get in touch with Dr. Stephen Hussey:Resourceyourhealth.com Instagram @drstephenhussey: https://www.instagram.com/drstephenhussey/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/DrStephenHussey/ Youtube “Resource Your Health”: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCEHJGZ17zRDZ9rn7yYrC-bQ?view_as=subscriber Marisa's site: https://www.marisamoon.comLearn about *Intermittent Fasting Freedom* at marisamoon.com/iffreedomFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/FoundationofWellnessPodcastInstagram: @foundationofwellness_podcast https://www.instagram.com/foundationofwellness_podcast@marisa_moon_ https://www.instagram.com/marisa_moon_Intro/Exit Music - "Ukulele Whistle" by Scott Holmes

#60: Natural Wine, Wine Industry Lies, Todd White of Dry Farm WinesJoin Marisa and dozens of other Primal Health Coaches in the free online health event called Habits to Thrive. You can register here: bit.ly/habitstothrive“The wine industry has some dirty dark secrets, and they've been very effective at keeping these secrets”Our guest today is someone doing big things in the world of wine...yup you heard me, wine. After 15 years in the wine business Todd White is dedicating his life to educating and helping people make better choices about food, nutrition, and how they think about consuming alcohol. He is the founder of Dry Farm Wines; he's also a writer, speaker, and a leading authority on healthy organic/natural wines. Dry Farm Wines is the only lab tested, all natural health quantified wine merchant in the world, and they work with small family farms that are committed to producing pure natural wines.Points of Discussion:U.S. winemaking industry has dirty secrets- 52% of all wines manufactured in the U.S. are made by just 3 giant conglomerates, and the top 30 companies make over 70% of US wines.- They hide behind thousands of different labels Wild yeast fermentation vs genetically modified lab-grown yeastThere are 76 approved additives for wine-making in the U.S.- many are considered safe, but 4 are proven to be toxic to humansHow much sugar is in wine?Dimethyldicarbonate - toxic additive used in wine manufacturingCommercial wine reaches 15% alcohol or higher and the labels are typically wrong and not required to be accurate- manufacturers want the number on the bottle lower so they pay less taxes, but they want the actual amount higher in the wine because it makes us drink moreWild yeast vs lab-grown yeast explored further- lab-frown yeast helps the producers have a more predictable outcome, make huge batches, and less risk with the yield. Also helps give wines a particular flavorRobert Mondavi winery is a marketing facade since it's been purchased by the second largest wine company in the worldCalifornia wine manufacturing facilities called “tank farms”99.9% of all US vineyards are now all irrigated, prior to 1973 all wine was dry farmed (grown without irrigation)- irrigation is bad for the planet- it's allowing glyphosate (roundup weed killer) into the wine because it's water soluble- creates a “lazy plant”, short root structure- leads to lower nutrients and antioxidants- cheaper to farm and gets higher yield Biodiversity on a natural vineyardMonocropping industrial farmingIt's a crime in most of Europe to irrigate wine grapevinesDry Farm Wines sells “Natural Wine”, a specific category of wine- Natural Wine represents less than 1/10 of 1% of wines in the worldIs Organic also Natural?- all Natural Wines are Organic (not typically certified), but not all Organic wines are Natural Wines- sold in a store like Whole Foods almost guarantees it's not a natural wine because natural wine producers can't make enough volumeIs Biodynamic also Natural?Ever get purple teeth from red wine? - likely from a color agent called “Mega Purple”Red wine naturally gets it's color from the skins of the grapes and the seeds, and the seeds give it tannin structure- histamines and tyromine in the red wine skins can be problematic for some people especially womenWhite wine contains just over 200 polyphenolsRed wine contains just over 800 polyphenols- resveratrol is the most studied and highly regardedMany women have negative reactions to commercial wine because they go for a darker color and it yields higher histamines and tyromine- most of these women do not have reactions to Dry Farm WinesAre your reactions to wine from Sulfites or Tannins? How much Sulfur Dioxide is in your wine?- used 3 or 4 times in the commercial winemaking processSugar + Alcohol is a bad combinationIs low sugar wine higher in alcohol?“Bricks” is an international measurement of the ripeness and sugar of the grapes- 26 Bricks average in California- 15-17 Bricks in Italy where he visited Natural wines are picked at lower ripeness which is lower sugarWine as a part of social bonding and healthCauses of headaches and reactions could be from so many thingsDry Farm Wines tests every wine for mold toxins called mycotoxins- It's a legal requirement in the EU but not in the USDry Farm Wines tests for Sugar, Alcohol, Mold Toxins, PesticidesLooking for Natural Wine near you?- look for “Natural Wine retailers” who don't sell anything else but natural wine- try the smartphone app called “Raisin”Try a vacuum cork to re-seal your natural winesTodd closes out describing his plan for Extended Fasting- Todd does not drink any wine/alcohol during fastingReferences:- 1 extra bottle for 1 penny: dryfarmwines.com/fowpodcast- Smartphone app called “Raisin” to search for Natural Wine available in your area.- Online healthy habits summit and Marisa's Intermittent Fasting presentation: bit.ly/habitstothriveMarisa's site: https://www.marisamoon.comLearn about *Intermittent Fasting Freedom* at marisamoon.com/iffreedomFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/FoundationofWellnessPodcastInstagram: @foundationofwellness_podcast https://www.instagram.com/foundationofwellness_podcast@marisa_moon_ https://www.instagram.com/marisa_moon_Intro/Exit Music - "Ukulele Whistle" by Scott Holmes

Today's episode is Marisa's reflection on a popular Instagram post that states: “Drinking Kombucha for probiotics is like drinking soda for hydration”This post's caption claimed that a certain keto and fasting expert regularly experiences a 40+ point-rise in his blood glucose levels over 2 hours that follow drinking a bottle of kombucha (with various types of kombucha, even low sugar) and many other people have this problem too.Marisa was alarmed because she thought the entire post was an exaggeration. But it's great for so many other people Try new herbs: - empty stomach with 2-4 ounces of hot water + 1/8-1/2 tsp of the new herb- sit quietly and notice how it makes you feel (spend time with the herb one-on-one, like a quiet first date)Do you need to cycle on and off of adaptogens?- depends on the person, what benefits you're looking for- Maca is sometimmes stimulating (less in gelatinized maca), which is one reason you're better off cycling on and off.- Most herbs are not this way, but some you get more benefit going on/offWhat goes into quality sleep?- Starts moment you wake, get sunlight first hours of the day- cardio in the morning, weight-lifting in afternoon (don't exercise within 2 hours of bed)- Evening: limit blue light because it mimics sunlight, use red/warm fire-looking light (try f.lux or “night mode” to tint computer screens warm/red)- Try Reishi Mushroom or Holy Basil to help bring down stress/anxiety and help sleep- Magnesium glycinate helps sleep and is easy on the gut, Magnesium l-threonate to help the brain and sleep- Sleep cycle, same sleep/wake time helps establish circadian rhythm Reishi Mushroom tips- many forms of Reishi, some powdered “mycelium” (some are bad) which is grown on a gluten-free grain medium- lots of mycelium is done poorly and ends up being primarily grain instead of mushroom- mycelium products are qaulity verified when they test for alpha-(grains) & beta-glucans (medicinal mushrooms)- Ultimate Reishi is wood-grown like they are in nature, and in Addictive Wellness products.- Some mushrooms are just water-extracted and that's fine. But for Reishi, you need alcohol AND water extractions. - You can buy dual-extracted reishi in tincture form or dried powder form- Reishi should have a strong bitter taste, that's a good sign (The “Bitterer the Betterer”)- Nighttime drink of 4 ounces hot water, 1/4 abhwagandha + 1/2 tsp reishi; optional add stevia- Reishi and Cacao couple together so well, making reishi taste less bitter- Try Cacao Elixir Blend by Addictive WellnessResources: 10% off Addictivewellness.com with code “FOWPODCAST”Addictive Wellness Products:- Reishi (Dual-Extracted Wood-Grown)- Cacao Elixir Blend - Energy Chocolate - Tranquility ChocolateAdditive Wellness YouTube Channel: https://www.youtube.com/addictivewellnessSages Ultimate Guide to Healthy Sleep: https://youtu.be/0NvoZ61RP6g Video “How to Block All Blue Light on your iPhone for Free”: https://youtu.be/iHBJK85vXNQ Video “Benefits of Red Light at Night & Sunlight During the Day”: https://youtu.be/wNtS1XPF5Iw Always check with your doctor before starting new herbal supplements or remedies to be sure you do not have any contraindications or medications that will negatively combine with these natural ingredients. When trying a new herb, take it on an empty stomach and sit for a short while paying attention to how it makes you feel. Mickey Trescott is a chef and certified Nutritional Therapy Practitioner who helps people succeed on allergen-free diets like the Autoimmune Protocol, otherwise known as the AIP elimination diet. Mickey is a former vegan and has an amazing story to share about her journey discovering that she had two autoimmune diseases and finding her way to recovery. She runs a website called AutoimmuneWellness.com and a podcast called The Autoimmune Wellness Podcast. Her new book just came out and it's called “The Nutrient-Dense Kitchen” which focuses on an often overlooked but vital element of the AIP diet which is to eat foods that are rich in nutrients so that you can support the healing process with great success. For professional Inquiries contact - Marisa Moon, Certified Primal Health Coach: marisa@marisamoon.com;Jessica Dogert, Registered Dietitian Nutritionist: jessdogert@gmail.comDisclaimer: Consult with your doctor or functional medicine practitioner before trying any of the remedies or protocols mentioned in this episode. Mood changes and sleep disturbances, fatigue, joint pain, and brain fog or hangover feelings. The Gut is Skin and includes our digestive tract.- Our skin reflects the health of our digestive tract. Unexpected symptoms:- When Mickey accidentally eats gluten she notices a change in her mood, she's more irritable, irrational and emotionally unstable.- When Marisa drinks coffee too regularly it makes her more stressed out and emotionally unstable.Mickey shares her story about weaning off of a major coffee addiction.- You can be sensitive to caffeine and not the coffee bean or vice versa. (the former is often for people with adrenal and thyroid disorders)Nutrient-Density:- The amount of nutrients in relation to the amount of energy/calories in a certain food- Our food system is flooded with nutrient-poor foods that fill us up but don't offer anything regarding nourishment.- When you have autoimmune disease you especially need nutrients to heal whatever your immune is damaging in your condition.- She wrote “The Nutrient Dense Kitchen” because the importance of nutrient-density has gotten lost in the growing field of AIP and Paleo.- Nutrient Density is important for everyone, not just autoimmunity. - Seasonal (and local) foods are most dense with nutrients, such as local wild berries - Wild plants have to defend themselves which means more nutrients - The most nutrient-dense animal proteins are cold-water fatty fish and shellfish. Next is grass-fed beef. Pork ranges widely depending on if the pig ate a foraged (pasture) diet. Regenerative farmers raise animals in a way that yields the most nutrient-dense meat and protects the earth and environmentRegenerative farms:- raise animals in a way that yields the most nutrient-dense meat, good for animals and humans, and protects the earth/environment- (sources named under “resources” below)Supplements vs. food nutrients - homemade liver supplementNames of common Autoimmune conditionsMost people with autoimmunity need to stay off of gluten foreverResources:- Autoimmunewellness.com- Mickeytrescott.com- Instagram @mickeytrescott and @autoimmunepaleo- Facebook @autoimmunepaleo and Autoimmune Wellness- The Paleo Approach by Dr Sarah Ballantyne, scientifically-backed AIP book on Amazon: https://amzn.to/2YwiNu0 (affiliate link)- The Autoimmune Paleo Cookbook (Mickey Trescott) Amazon: https://amzn.to/2Ywjaoo (affiliate link)- Autoimmune Wellness Handbook (Mickey Trescott) Amazon: https://amzn.to/31kLZkt (affiliate link)- The Nutrient Dense Kitchen (Mickey Trescott) Amazon: https://amzn.to/2Kxo5vk (affiliate link)- Learn more about Nutrient-Density in The Foundation of Wellness podcast episodes #31 and #32- Order local and grass-fed pasture-raised meats from - Marisa's loves Seven Sons Farms (regenerative farm collective in the midwest). Episode 47 is one of our favorite episodes yet. We are chatting with Tyler Jean, the guy behind instagram's @functional.foods and the creator of eatfunctionalfoods.org Tyler is an aspiring Naturopathic Doctor, who attends the National University of Natural Medicine (NUNM) in Portland, Oregon. He believes that we, as a society, are starting to move toward a more preventative and natural approach to medicine. With the rise in chronic disease and the increased patient frustration from minimal treatment options, now, more than ever, people are starting to get second opinions from alternative medicine practitioners like Naturopaths. Tyler says that while it can be easy to get caught up in the latest fads and dietary trends, when it comes to food choices, his golden principle is this: Eat nutrient-dense, unprocessed foods, that celebrate plant diversity, emphasize quality, and encourages a balanced, adequate, and varied diet. By making this simple shift, you can make a profound impact on your health and vitality. In this episode Tyler shares the one thing all diets should have in common. He also shares some of his 10 food guidelines he lives by as well as how he overcame anxiety & panic attacks [by adhering to an elimination diet for 30 days and removing gluten] and why we should all be getting back to the basics aka: cooking more from scratch. For professional Inquiries contact - Jessica Dogert, Registered Dietitian Nutritionist: jessdogert@gmail.com; or Marisa Moon, Certified Primal Health Coach: marisa@marisamoon.comDisclaimer: Consult with your doctor or functional medicine practitioner before trying any of the remedies or protocols mentioned in this episode. This is episode #45 and we're chatting with Melissa Strahan a co-founder of Joovv Red Light Therapy to dive into a very confusing, but totally NOW topic that is infrared saunas and red light therapy. Joovv is taking the wellness space by storm thanks to famous biohacker Ben Greenfield, and even Dr. Sarah Ballantyne who you hear us quote research from quite regularly on our podcast. Dr Ballantyne endorses Joovv and swears by the positive effects it has had on her fibromyalgia pain.Joovv is huge with athletes everywhere ranging from the Olympians and NFL, NBA, UFC athletes, and more. And we think the biggest reason Joovv is gaining immense popularity is because it is extremely customizable and modular and affordable. They have tabletop and back-of-the-door models, they've got it all. AND, Joovv uses a special LED coating that helps you achieve the best results in a shorter amount of time. For professional Inquiries contact - Jessica Dogert, Registered Dietitian Nutritionist: jessdogert@gmail.com; or Marisa Moon, Certified Primal Health Coach: marisa@marisamoon.comDisclaimer: Consult with your doctor, a biological dentist, or functional medicine practitioner before trying any of the remedies or protocols mentioned in this episode. This information and recording is for informational and educational purposes only.Points of Discussion:In 2014 Melissa started light treatment at a spa. Engineer husband Justin, made infrared at home. - Warning “pet shop” red heat lamp bulbs don't workScience:- NASA funded Red light therapy research for astronaut health- Light therapy is all about the wavelengths, and LED allows that specific wavelength to be achieved- Red light is in the mid-600 nanometer range- Near infrared is in mid-800 nanometer range- Therapeutic wavelengths help mitochondria, ATP cellular energy, and anti-aging mechanisms- Joovv combines red light and near infraredJoovv Tips:- Full body treatment or rotate to expose entire body - Joovv is more customizable and affordable compared to other brands, and it allows you to work your way up to a full-body treatment center.Red Light Vs Infrared:- The red color and lack of heat is anti-aging but doesn't penetrate the body as deeply- Near infrared penetrates deeper, helps organs and muscle recovery. - Not targeted results, the body decides what to work on first (seeking homeostasis)Story #1: how infrared Joovv lights helped a family member gain peripheral eyesight What can you expect? - Benefits are instinctual and feel good- Journaling to track changes over time- Relaxation and better sleep, but everyone's different deepening what their body needsWhy Light, Why Now:- Most American's spend 90% of their life indoors- infrared and red light therapy help to counteract blue light (indoor lighting and electronics), & provide more wavelengths like sunlight. (learn about blue light in our podcast episode #22)- Red Light/Infrared primes skin to help sunburn prevention and boost vitamin D - Families like using Joovv for evening lighting at home, circadian rhythm and sleep better.Kids:- Considered safe for children, no studies done on that yet. Ask your pediatrician.- Kids benefit from wearing orange/red/amber glasses (AKA blue-light-blocking glasses) at night when they watch TV or electronics.Safety & Guidelines:- Start out slow, like 3 minutes per day, to avoid abrupt detox symptoms.- 10-minutes per treatment area per day, at a distance of 6 inches or more, try to treat as much of your body as you can- Can replace pre-workout drinks) and after workouts to regenerate and prevent injuriesInteresting rumor: - NFL might have considered banning infrared therapy because it gives players such a performance advantage.Hot Sauna Vs Infrared Light Therapy- Sauna therapy uses heat, getting a cardiovascular response via heat shock proteins in the body.- Sauna is completely different therapy from red light therapy (AKA photobiomodulation) where there is no heat.Story #2: Mother who used Joovv light on her child who has downs syndrome helped him walk after a week.Story #3: friends who use cold red light laser therapy to heal from arthritis in the knee and neck injury from car accident.Facts:- Joovv is FDA approved to be used on humans (others are intended for plants)- Now considering red and near infrared light therapy to act as an anti-fungal in the gut (may help with candida or SIBO in the gut) in the field of medicine.Melissa's results & final tips:- Melissa's eczema is gone and never came back, no stress-induced flareups. She thanks Joovv and primal living principles like *grounding*.- As a mother of 6, light therapy helps her to look young in her late 30's. She suggests taking photos once a month to track your improvements.Resources: Joovv.com Check out Joovv's learning section to continue the education or start a live chat with a representative and ask questions. Also see the hundreds of reviews to learn what others are experiencing.Take home message:Seek bulbs with wavelengths in the 600 nm range and 800 nm range; shorter treatment time is ideal; heat is not necessary or better, a smaller device at home is better than nothing; Joovv helps you work your way up to full body over time and offers 60-day money back guarantee.Jessica's site: https://www.jessicadogert.comMarisa's site: https://www.marisamoon.comFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/FoundationofWellnessPodcastInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/foundationofwellness_podcastIntro/Exit Music - "Ukulele Whistle" by Scott Holmes
This is episode 44. We sat down with Chris Husong to talk about CBD at the paleo f(x) conference in Austin TX. He's the VP of marketing and communications at Elixinol - a colorado based company committed to extracting & providing the highest quality CBD Hemp products in the world.Try Elixinol with this 10% off code: “first10” at https://elixinol.com/For those of you thinking What the heck even is CBD? here's a brief overview: Cannabidiol (CBD) is a plant compound derived from hemp that regulates our body's endocannabinoid system (ECS). The ECS helps regulate important actions in the immune system, nervous system and all of the body's organs - it's literally the bridge between your body and mind that maintains your overall wellbeing. Once CBD enters our body, it attaches to ECS receptors in the brain, organs, and immune cells to quickly begin regulating the body's optimal balance. When the mind and body is in this state of homeostasis, stress and anxiety levels lower, sleep improves, and pain + inflammation is reduced. In this episode we go into even greater explanation of what CBD is, why it's so beneficial for us, as well as proper daily dosage and the different delivery methods. We also chat about drug testing, what to look for when purchasing CBD products [full spectrum vs isolate, mg of CBD] and our personal experiences using CBD. Wait. Is CBD legal in the US?
