Earlier this month I joined nearly 9,000 other people who are passionate about parks and recreation in Dallas at the 2023 NRPA Annual Conference. It was a week full of inspiration, networking and fun — and for me, a chance to celebrate not only all the good work happening in local parks and recreation, but also see the culmination of my NRPA colleagues' hard work in putting on what was a truly incredible event. One of my biggest highlights of the week was connecting with Chris Bass, CPRP, Director of Parks and Recreation for Douglasville, Georgia, and the incoming Board President of the National Recreation and Park Ethnic Minority Society (NRPEMS), and Thamara Velasco, CYSA, a recreation assistant in Douglasville, chair for public relations for NRPEMS and recipient of NRPA's Young Professional Fellowship. I really enjoyed our conversation about all the good work going on in Douglasville — who was a National Gold Medal Award Finalist this year — as well as the important work Chris and Thamara are doing to connect and support diverse and underrepresented park and recreation professionals as part of the NRPEMS. This was truly one of my favorite parts of this year's conference, and it was such a joy to sit down with Chris and Thamara to learn more about them and soak in some of the passion they have for parks and recreation – I was inspired after this conversation, and I hope you are too. Tune in to our full conversation below. You'll learn: How NRPEMS is building community for park and recreation professionals of diverse cultures and backgrounds Why it's important to have a network focused on diverse professionals in our industry How NRPEMS has been beneficial for Chris and Thamara in their careers What being part of NRPEMS and being park and recreation professionals serving their community means to Chris and Thamara How to get involved with the NRPEMS, and much more! For the last few years, Jason Dion was running his cybersecurity training business, Dion Training, from his guest room in his home in Mayaguez, Puerto Rico. However, his remote-first company recently acquired office space near Orlando, Florida, where he and his family are now located. Although he does appreciate moving his office and recording equipment from his house to a shared location, he continues to work with his employees and contractors in six countries using primarily remote-work strategies. Some of these strategies include asynchronous communication using Slack and offering flexible work hours for everyone, except for their once-weekly meeting. Jason makes his own hours and still works from home on occasion; so, he feels like he has tremendous flexibility, even as the lead instructor and founder of a growing business. In this episode, Jason shares how he transitioned from a naval officer to a college professor. He has worked as a network engineer, director of network operations and security center, and as an information systems officer for large organizations around the globe. He eventually needed more flexibility with his schedule, which led to him teaching cybersecurity courses on Udemy. Between the basic Udemy courses and the more robust courses on his website, his training program has grown to 1 million students. Dion Training now prepares students for IT, project management, and cybersecurity certificates. Many people who go through this training program will end up in remote-work positions, as IT work lends itself well to working from a home office.Jason explains that there are dozens of roles within the cybersecurity realm, with something for nearly every personality type. Of note, most entry-level cybersecurity positions do not require a college degree, so he encourages high schoolers and recent high school graduates to seek experience in an IT help desk situation while earning certificates so they can enter a career position making $70-200k within a couple of years. Job seekers need to obtain specific certificates for different fields, and sometimes a combination of more than one is required. Jason personally holds multiple information technology professional certifications, including Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP), Certified Ethical Hacker (CEH), Certified Network Defense Architect (CNDA), Digital Forensic Examiner (DFE), Digital Media Collector (DMC), CySA+, Security+, Network+, A+, PRINCE2 Practitioner, and ITIL, among others. He also holds a master of science degree in information technology, specializing in information assurance, but he reminds the listeners that the bachelor's and master's level degrees are usually only needed for management and higher positions. Dion Training does offer a track that includes career counseling which is especially useful for those who are pivoting their careers. Anyone who would like to hear more about how to get into cybersecurity can find Jason and the podcast Your Cyber Path and can also contact him through his website with the same name.Jason's podcast and contact info can all be found on his website: https://www.yourcyberpath.com/Some products that he and his team use and recommend include Descript and Restream. As we continue to lift up stories of inclusion in celebration of Pride Month, my colleagues Allison Colman, NRPA's director of health, and Teresa Morrisey, a program manager on NRPA's Park Access team, recently published a blog post on the Open Space blog titled, “A Pathway to Trans Inclusion in Youth Sports.” I highly recommend checking it out to learn more about building more inclusive environments where all people, regardless of their gender identity or expression, are welcomed, accepted and fully able to participate in park and recreation facilities and programming — including recreational sports. One of the individuals featured in the blog post was Peyton O'Conner, AICP, CPRE, CNP, CYSA (they/she), the parks and recreation director for Buncombe County in Asheville, North Carolina. I'm thrilled to welcome Peyton to the show today to have a conversation around LGBTQ+ inclusion in parks and rec, as well as discuss the good work they're doing in Buncombe County. When NRPA released guidance on transgender inclusion in youth sports back in April, Peyton reached out in support, and expressed the need for expanding this guidance to adult recreational sports, as well. Peyton has been instrumental in advocating for LGBTQ+ inclusion in their community and in park and recreation programming, and has been on a mission to implement an inclusion policy for trans kids at their agency. And, as we're also looking ahead to Park and Recreation Month in July and this year's theme of “Our Park and Recreation Story,” I thought it would be a great opportunity for listeners to hear Peyton's story, as well. Tune in to the full episode below to learn more about how Peyton is using their own experience as a member of the LGBTQ+ community to advocate for creating more inclusive spaces and programs in parks and recreation. You'll also learn: What compelled Peyton to reach out to NRPA when they first noticed the guidance on transgender inclusion in youth sports. The importance of approaching conversations about LGBTQ+ inclusion the same as any other anti-discrimination policy — based on a set of facts and not up for discussion or debate. How Peyton's agency realized they needed a formal inclusion policy for trans kids, and how their staff and community responded. How park and recreation professionals can advocate for more inclusive policies in their own communities. How small changes, like using individuals' preferred pronouns and gender-neutral restrooms, can have a huge impact, and much more!

Atualmente é Head of Presales LatAm at Kaspersky Lab. Possui diversas certificações: MCP, MCSA, MCSE, Segurança MCSA, Segurança MCSE no Windows 2000 Server e Windows Server 2003, Microsoft Most Valuable Professional no Windows Server (2004 a 2007), Microsoft Most Valuable Professional em Enterprise Security (2007 a 2017), CISSP, csaE (CompTIA Security Analytics Expert), CompTIA CASP, CSA+, Security +, CEH e ITIL V3 Foundation. Tambem é o autor dos livros: - Guia de Certificação MCSE do Windows XP Professional; - Simulados para uma Certificação CompTIA Security + SY0-401; - Simulados para a Certificação CompTIA Analista de Segurança Cibernética (CSA +) - CS0-001.
