Daniel "Rudy" Ruettiger grew up in a house of 14 children and his his connection with his father, a World War II veteran, was watching Notre Dame football. Rudy's dream was to play for the Fighting Irish. But his high school athetic career did not merit attention from Notre Dame and he says his grades weren't good enough to get accepted there either. So a co-worker encouraged him to join the Navy. Rudy says his time in the U.S. Navy changed his life and made his Notre Dame dream possible. In this edition of "Veteran's Chronicles," Ruettiger tells us about his time in the Navy, including trips to Guantanamo Bay and serving on a destroyer in the Mediterranean Sea during the Vietnam era. He explains how a conversation with an officer who graduated from Notre Dame rekindled his dream to play football. He then shares the tough road to get accepted into Notre Dame, how the GI Bill paid for his academic journey to get there and how his military service helped him to connect with both football coaches for the Fighting Irish. Finally, Ruettiger walks us through life as a walk-on and the dramatic events that led to him taking the field, getting in the game, and recording a tackle in his one play from scrimmage. And he'll reveal what was real in the movie "Rudy" and where the filmmakers took some dramatic license.

On this episode, Karen speaks with Daniel “Rudy” Reuttiger; 'Rudy' is an American motivational speaker and author who played college football at the University of Notre Dame and is the real-life inspiration for the iconic 1993 film RUDY. Rudy is here to share the story behind the film as well as his life journey since Rudy was released.
Against all odds on a gridiron in South Bend, Indiana, Daniel "Rudy" Ruettiger carved his name into history books as perhaps the most inspiring graduate of the University of Notre Dame. As fans cheered "RU-DY!, RU-DY!," (which is now considered to be the underdog chant of a lifetime) this "five-foot nothin', a hundred and nothin' … without a speck of athletic ability", sacked the quarterback in the last 27 seconds of the only play in the only game of his college football career. He is the first player in the school's history to be carried off the field on the shoulders of his teammates. As the son of an oil refinery worker and third of 14 children, Rudy rose from valleys of discouragement and despair to the pinnacles of success. It took years of fierce determination to overcome obstacles and criticisms, yet Rudy achieved his first dream - to attend Notre Dame and play football for the Fighting Irish. In 1993, TRISTAR Productions immortalized Rudy's life story with the blockbuster film, RUDY. Written and directed by Angelo Pizzo and David Anspaugh, the award-winning team who brought us HOOSIERS, the critically acclaimed RUDY received "Two Thumbs Up" from Siskel and Ebert, is considered one of the "Most Inspirational Movies of All Time" by Fandango, IMDB, Ranker and countless other websites. USA TODAY ranked RUDY as the #1 "Best Football Movie of All Time." The film continues to inspire millions worldwide. Today, Rudy Ruettiger is an Emmy Award Winning Motivational Keynote Speaker, author, and producer with over 25 years of Experience speaking to Corporations, Universities, Sports Teams, and Special Events. His Captivating personality and powerful message of "NEVER QUIT" and "YES I CAN" comes from his personal experiences of adversity and triumph and lasts a lifetime. Time and time again, Rudy's appearances receive thunderous applause and standing ovations as he inspires groups of 200 to 20,000 around the world. Recently, Rudy offered his message in his orginal production, DREAM BIG: Rudy Ruettiger Live on Broadway, presented at the Samuel Friedman Theatre, along with his daughter Jessica Noel Ruettiger who made her Broadway debut performing her original song, "This Is My Dream" in the show's finale. Additional Pop Culture References such as:Witness / "Be careful out among them English." - When Rose is out with Jess at the beginning of the episode, Rose shares that her parents took her to see Witness and then they never came back; Rose then quotes a line in the movie. Witness is a 1985 American neo-noir dramatic crime thriller film starring Harrison Ford & Kelly McGillis. The film focuses on a police detective protecting an Amish woman and her young son, who becomes a target after he witnesses a brutal murder in a Philadelphia train station. The film earned eight Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture and Best Actor for Ford, and won Best Original Screenplay and Best Film Editing.Rudy - When Nick is working on putting together Jess's party Schmidt shares he's been an inspiration and that this will be their “Rudy.” Rudy is a 1993 American biographical sports film starring Sean Astin. The story is an account of the life of Daniel "Rudy" Ruettiger, who harbored dreams of playing football at the University of Notre Dame despite significant obstacles. It was the first film that the Notre Dame administration allowed to be shot on campus since Knute Rockne, All American in 1940. Rudy was named one of the best 25 sports movies of the previous 25 years in two polls by ESPN.This episode we discuss which one of us is most likely to guide someone through how to make a great cocktail, mess up a standard drink recipe, plan a surprise party, and get really excited about their birthday. We give an honorable mention to Schmidt's contribution to the birthday video but cover the scene where Schmidt walks Cece through how to make an old fashioned as our “Schmidtism” this episode. For our “Not in the 2020s”, we briefly touch on Mike's comments about Cece's body and also the flip phone during the video Nick put together. In our “Yes in the 2020s” we discuss the lack of toxic masculinity with Winston and Coach doing a bake off and Winston standing up for himself regarding basketball. We also explore the career of Ben Falcone (Mike), the guest star of this episode and specifically mentioned an Instagram story where Ben and Melissa asked to be in Thor and a recent link of Ben and Melissa on James Corden. Also in this episode were the following guest stars who we do not discuss in the podcast: Jamie Lee Curtis (Joan Day - Previously Discussed in S2E8), Angela Kinsey (Rose - Previously Discussed in S3E2), Jessica Chaffin (Bertie - Previously Discussed in S3E9), Josh Gad (Bearclaw - Previously Discussed in S2E2), Curtis Armstrong (Principal Foster - Previously Discussed in S2E24), June Diane Raphael (Sadie - Previously Discussed in S1E15), Steve Agee (Outside Dave - Previously Discussed in S2E17), Ralph Ahn (Tran - Previously Discussed in S2E7), Rob Reiner (Bob Day - Previously Discussed in S2E8), Cheyenne Nguyen (Jenny), and Tom Lommel (Patron). We also touch on an editing goof on this podcast when Coach throws a bag into the kitchen and it is missing in the next shot. Additionally, we do a deep dive on the character's birthdays and what we have seen so far in the show. This episode we did not find any new bears. While not discussed in the podcast, we noted other references in this episode including:Old Fashioned Cocktail - This episode, Cece's struggling at the bar and Schmidt teaches her how to make an Old Fashioned cocktail. This cocktail is made with whiskey, sugar, Angostura bitters, and an orange peel (or cherry) for garnish and is a cocktail made for whiskey lovers. It was developed in the 19th century and given its name in the 1880s.Griffith Park - When Nick is trying to distract Jess, he asks his friends if they know any time consuming and free activities in Griffith Park. Griffith Park is a large park at the eastern end of the Santa Monica Mountains in Los Angeles and contains popular attractions like a zoo, an observatory, a history museum, and the Hollywood sign. It is much larger than Central Park in New York and the Golden Gate Park in San Francisco. When Schmidt is trying to make Cece feel better about not graduating high school, he lists the below group of people who didn't graduate:Einstein - Albert Einstein was a German theoretical physicist who is best known for his theory of relativity. While he was a good student, he could not stand school as he did not like the way the teachers taught, objectively. He quit at his teacher's suggestion at 15 and never returned.Bill Gates - Bill Gates is an American businessman, software developer, philanthropist, and author who co-founded Microsoft with his childhood friend. While he was excused from his math class (in high school) to focus on computer programming, he dropped out from college at Harvard instead of high school.Anne Frank - Annelies Marie “Anne” Frank was a Jewish girl who kept a diary during World War 2, documenting her life in hiding while Germany was under Nazi persecution. In this episode of TST, we talk to Jim Johnson, a high school basketball coach with experience in winless seasons, multiple championship teams, and some of his players that have made it to the NBA. Every game has historical moments where a player or players are so in the zone that they perform amazing feats. Daniel "Rudy" Ruettiger's sack for Notre Dame, Team USA Hockey winning Olympic Gold in 1980, baseball's Ron Necciai throwing a nine-inning no-hitter with 27 strikeouts, and basketball's Wilt Chamberland's 100 point game. Coach Johnson created a special moment like Coach Devine for Rudy, he made J-Mac's dream come true when he put him in his first basketball game. What happened in the last few minutes of that final game which honored seniors was nothing less than a miracle. More About Coach Jim Johnson www.coachjimjohnson.com Follow on Facebook Instagram Follow on Twitter Connect on LinkedIn On Feb. 15, 2006, Coach Johnson made the kindhearted gesture of inserting his autistic manager, Jason McElwain, now known to the world as J-Mac into Greece Athena High School's final home game, which the Trojans won 79-43. J-Mac scored 20 points in just over four minutes, including six three-point baskets, to become an instant national celebrity. Coach Johnson, also, was featured in major news outlets around the country. To make the Hollywood ending complete, Greece Athena captured the first Section V title of Coach Johnson's career a few weeks later. A second sectional crown followed in 2007, and Coach Johnson then coached the Trojans to their third straight league title in 2008 by posting a perfect 12-0 record in league play, netting Coach of the Year honors. Coach Johnson has made a number of radio and television appearances, including the Oprah Winfrey and Jim Rome shows. In 2006 he met President George W. Bush, Governor George Pataki, and Senator Hillary Clinton, to name just a few luminaries. The Athena team was also paid a visit at school by NBA legend Earvin “Magic” Johnson. J-Mac's magic moment won the ESPY for “Best Sports Moment” at the ESPN awards show later that year. Persistence is the single greatest quality to have in sport and business. In this episode we break it down so anyone can have it. We begin our discussion with the story of Daniel “Rudy” Ruettiger. The year is 1993 and Sean Astin is 8 years away from playing the Hobbit Samwise Gamgee, so to fill the time and build his cred he stars in the feel-good football story about a dwarf named Rudy. Rudy is the story of a Daniel ‘Rudy’ Ruettiger who just wants to achieve his life long goal of playing football for Notre Dame - despite not having the size, ability, or intelligence to do so – but boy he sure does have the work ethic and ability to rub his success in the faces of all his doubters and anyone else who'll listen! Brought to you by director David Anspaugh and writer Angelo Pizzo, the same combo who 7 years earlier made Hoosiers, Rudy also features, Jon Favreau, Charles Dutton, Ned Beatty, and Vince Vaughn. Made for $12 million this underdog story brought home $22 million at the box office and received fairly positive critical reviews. But does it hold up? Listen in as Jon, Colin, and Brent shrink our expectations to find out if Rudy is the hero of the day and worthy of being carried off the field in victory, or this movie is in fact as depressing and far fetched as the Quasimodo getting to hang with Esmeralda in the Hunchback of Notre Dame.
A once lost Da Vinci painting makes history for the biggest sale of all time (one expert almost fainted upon seeing it); the INCREDIBLE true story of Daniel “Rudy” Ruettiger (what happened outside what is seen in the movie is even MORE inspiring than the events in the film); the power of Tony Robbins’ affirmation, “All I really have to do is remember and know that…”; Paul’s statement about what is the true evil in life; and James Malinchak on, “You do not get what you want, you get what you expect.”

Why inspiration is one critical to success, and how to begin developing this inspiration. How he needed to approach multiple people regarding his movie idea and face multiple rejections. Rudy is the true life story of Daniel "Rudy" Ruettiger, who dreamed of playing football at the University of Notre Dame despite significant obstacles. Through struggle, pain and constant put downs, Rudy eventually achieves his dream and is allowed to play the last down of his last game as a senior. Throughout this movie, we see a constant theme that may be all too familiar in the lives of so many–that you are not good enough. Jesus made us in His image, to live a life fulfilling the goals, dreams and life He set before us–not to be controlled by the negative voices that replay in our heads. In the book of Isaiah, we are told to trust in the Lord, and by doing so, we will find new strength, and from that strength, we can start to listen to the voice of Jesus vs. the negative voices that should have no power over our lives.
