Whether you're a basketball fanatic or just love a good redemption story, this classic film is packed with emotion, grit, and unforgettable moments.Directed by David Anspaugh and starring Gene Hackman, Hoosiers is the ultimate underdog story, inspired by the real-life 1954 Indiana state championship win of Milan High School. The film perfectly captures the essence of small-town basketball, where the sport is more than just a game—it's a way of life.Norman Dale (Gene Hackman) arrives in the tiny town of Hickory, Indiana, with a troubled past and a chance at redemption. Tasked with coaching the high school basketball team, he quickly faces resistance from the town's passionate residents, who are sceptical of his tough, unconventional methods. As he attempts to mold his players into a disciplined, team-first unit, Dale finds an unlikely ally in Shooter (Dennis Hopper), the town drunk and father of one of the players. Together, they battle personal demons and community pressure, leading the Hickory Huskers on an improbable journey to the state championship. At its core, Hoosiers is about more than just basketball. It's about resilience, discipline, and the power of believing in yourself—even when others doubt you. It also explores the way a community rallies behind its team, making it a deeply personal story for many viewers. From last-second buzzer-beaters to the struggles of redemption, Hoosiers is a film that continues to inspire generations. Whether you're a die-hard basketball fan or just love a well-told underdog story, it's a movie that proves heart and determination can take you further than anyone ever expected. So grab your playbook, rally the team, and join us for another classic review!
This week's With Respect reprises a prior show with David Anspaugh, a Hollywood director. His two sports movies, Hoosiers and Rudy, are easily recognizable as classics. They talk over his career, his relationship with other famous movie personalities, the recently deceased, Gene Hackman, among others. They do focus on the making of Hoosiers in this show, with a promise of talking about the making of Rudy in a future show.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
This week, we kick off a March-long salute to the dearly departed king of American screen acting as Hackmonth begins with a classic of the inspirational sports genre, the story of a man who moves to Hicktown, Indiana and whips a bunch of farm boys into state champions. It's 1986's Hoosiers, directed by David Anspaugh and starring Gene Hackman, Barbara Hershey and Dennis Hopper. While the circumstances surrounding this theme month are unquestionably sad, it's still a treat to watch one of the all-time great screen presences cook in some of his most acclaimed roles, and there's no question he's outstanding in this one. The three adult leads are all terrific in fact, lifting the movie above its genre-trappings. Is the movie enormously overrated by sports-inclined boomers? Yes, definitely, but that doesn't mean it's not a cozy comfort watch at the same time. Plus: Neither Hayl or J Mo actually watched this year's Oscars, but that doesn't stop us from having opinions on them! And Justin's back with another theatrical field report, this time having made it out to the cinema to see Osgood Perkins' Vancouver-shot Stephen King adaptation The Monkey. If you'd like to watch the movie before listening along to our conversation, Hoosiers is available on MGM+ at the moment north of the border, but... I dunno, check it out from the library, that's what I did. Other works discussed in this episode include Conclave, Nickel Boys, Megalopolis, Emilia Perez, A Real Pain, Challengers, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, Behind Enemy Lines, Hustle, Blue Chips, Coach Carter, Friday Night Lights, Glory Road, Rudy and The Way Back. We'll be back next week as Hackmonth continues with a 1995 naval thriller starring king Gene alongside Denzel Washington in Tony Scott's Crimson Tide, which is available to stream on Disney+. The week after that it's Francis Ford Coppola's The Conversation, and we close out the month with Wes Anderson's The Royal Tenenbaums heading in to the pod-canon. Until then, we'll see you at the movies!!

Against all odds on a gridiron in South Bend, Indiana, Daniel "Rudy" Ruettiger carved his name into history books as perhaps the most inspiring graduate of the University of Notre Dame. As fans cheered "RU-DY!, RU-DY!," (which is now considered to be the underdog chant of a lifetime) this "five-foot nothin', a hundred and nothin' … without a speck of athletic ability", sacked the quarterback in the last 27 seconds of the only play in the only game of his college football career. He is the first player in the school's history to be carried off the field on the shoulders of his teammates. As the son of an oil refinery worker and third of 14 children, Rudy rose from valleys of discouragement and despair to the pinnacles of success. It took years of fierce determination to overcome obstacles and criticisms, yet Rudy achieved his first dream - to attend Notre Dame and play football for the Fighting Irish. In 1993, TRISTAR Productions immortalized Rudy's life story with the blockbuster film, RUDY. Written and directed by Angelo Pizzo and David Anspaugh, the award-winning team who brought us HOOSIERS, the critically acclaimed RUDY received "Two Thumbs Up" from Siskel and Ebert, is considered one of the "Most Inspirational Movies of All Time" by Fandango, IMDB, Ranker and countless other websites. USA TODAY ranked RUDY as the #1 "Best Football Movie of All Time." The film continues to inspire millions worldwide. Today, Rudy Ruettiger is an Emmy Award Winning Motivational Keynote Speaker, author, and producer with over 25 years of Experience speaking to Corporations, Universities, Sports Teams, and Special Events. Recently, Rudy offered his message in his orginal production, DREAM BIG: Rudy Ruettiger Live on Broadway, presented at the Samuel Friedman Theatre, along with his daughter Jessica Noel Ruettiger who made her Broadway debut performing her original song, "This Is My Dream" in the show's finale.

The year is 1993 and Sean Astin is 8 years away from playing the Hobbit Samwise Gamgee, so to fill the time and build his cred he stars in the feel-good football story about a dwarf named Rudy. Rudy is the story of a Daniel ‘Rudy’ Ruettiger who just wants to achieve his life long goal of playing football for Notre Dame - despite not having the size, ability, or intelligence to do so – but boy he sure does have the work ethic and ability to rub his success in the faces of all his doubters and anyone else who'll listen! Brought to you by director David Anspaugh and writer Angelo Pizzo, the same combo who 7 years earlier made Hoosiers, Rudy also features, Jon Favreau, Charles Dutton, Ned Beatty, and Vince Vaughn. Made for $12 million this underdog story brought home $22 million at the box office and received fairly positive critical reviews. But does it hold up? Listen in as Jon, Colin, and Brent shrink our expectations to find out if Rudy is the hero of the day and worthy of being carried off the field in victory, or this movie is in fact as depressing and far fetched as the Quasimodo getting to hang with Esmeralda in the Hunchback of Notre Dame.
Against all odds on a gridiron in South Bend, Indiana, Daniel "Rudy" Ruettiger in twenty seven seconds, carved his name into history books as perhaps the most famous graduate of the University of Notre Dame. In 1993, TRISTAR Productions immortalized his life story with the blockbuster film, RUDY. Written and produced by Angelo Pizzo and David Anspaugh, the award-winning team who brought us HOOSIERS, the critically acclaimed RUDY received "Two Thumbs Up" from Siskel and Ebert and continues to inspire millions worldwide. Today, a highly sought after motivational speaker, Rudy entertains international corporate audiences with a unique, passionate, and heartfelt style of communicating. Most currently Rudy performed his one-man show, DREAM BIG on Broadway!! This show will also tour other cities including Chicago, Boston, and Las Vegas. In addition Rudy's new documentary titled, DREAM BIG – The Walk On won several Emmy Awards for Best Director and Best Documentary. The link is available on Amazon. In Celebration of the 25th ANNIVERSARY of the Movie RUDY, the film was presented on the big screen at the Microsoft Theatre in LA while the musical score was performed live by the Hollywood Orchestra. What you'll learn in this episode: The ins and outs of how Rudy went from Notre Dame to getting his movie developed. How Rudy learned to deal with rejection as an insurance salesman. Why inspiration is one critical to success, and how to begin developing this inspiration. How he needed to approach multiple people regarding his movie idea and face multiple rejections. What he did after Notre Dame declined his movie, and why Notre Dame was important to him. What Rudy's "insurance technique" is, and how it helped him successfully sell his ideas. Why Rudy had to use his faith to keep motivated during his journey. The long sequence of stops and starts that it took to eventually create his movie. Why eliminating fear is so critical to the business and creative process. Why it's important to dream big, follow your inspiration, and refuse to compromise. 30 years ago a little film about high school basketball in Indiana made it to the big screen. No one could have predicted the impact the movie “Hoosiers” would have on moviegoers to this day not even the two men responsible, Emmy award winning Director David Anspaugh and screenwriter/producer Angelo Pizzo. The 1986 classic went on to garner two Oscar nominations one for Dennis Hopper for Best Supporting Actor and for Best Original Score for composer Jerry Goldsmith. I traveled to Mr. Anspaugh’s lovely home for this comfortable conversation. Amongst his wonderful movie memorabilia we discuss how the end of Hoosiers could have been very different or not at all. Plus the cameo appearance of David Anspaugh in another of the duos great films "Rudy". We discuss the art of filmmaking from both David and Angelo’s point of view. Find out how the movie Hoosiers is still inspiring and influencing people today. (hint: Michael Phelps) And let’s not forget the revelation that Angelo Pizzo was once in the ballet! All in all the hour scratches the surface of a wonderful friendship and working relationship that has lasted some 50 years. I hope you enjoy this episode as much as I enjoyed bringing it to you! Please take a moment to fill out this quick survey. We'd be very grateful if you did.
