With a last-second shot from the star shooter, the underdog team defeats its powerhouse opponent, becoming the smallest school ever to win the state basketball championship. Sound like the ending of “Hoosiers”? It should, because it's what happened in the true story that inspired the beloved film. The Living Legend is back! And that's not just some willy-nilly characterization, it became a cold hard fact when Angelo Pizzo was officially named a Living Legend by The Indiana Historical Society in 2011.Angelo picks up right where he left off during our last conversation, diving deeper into the making of Hoosiers and how it changed his life. This badass spent 6 months on the IndyCar circuit, took private military tours overseas to research Navy SEALs, and even wrote a sequel to Goodfellas for Martin Scorsese! And oh yeah, he ended up creating another classic film called Rudy that was recently named the greatest football movie of all-time. Amidst all this worldly success, our Hoosier hero left Hollywood and moved back home to raise his sons in the greatest city on earth, Bloomington. This man has a perspective on Indiana basketball like no other, and it is our great joy and privilege to present Angelo Pizzo - Part Two!See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
Imagine you're a kid growing up steps from the IU campus, strolling inside The Fieldhouse to rebound for the likes of Archie Dees & Walt Bellamy. As an undergrad, you're in the crowd as Big George McGinnis and Steve Downing take the court. Later, after moving out to pursue your dreams in Hollywood, you decide at the last moment to attend the 1981 title game in Philly, and suddenly find yourself flying back to Bloomington with the team to celebrate. Still want more? Well, what if you then go ahead and write & produce the greatest sports movie of all-time, bouncing between Jack Nicholson, Gene Hackman and Burt Reynolds to play your leading man, and after it becomes an instant classic you are personally invited by Robert Montgomery Knight to travel on team road trips whenever you want? While this is pure, absurdist fantasy for we mere mortals, it is in fact the life & times of Angelo Pizzo. While many recognize him as the author of of the greatest sports movie of all-time, Hoosiers, few understand just how much of a Hoosier he really is... until now!And once you listen to what happened the night of the 1987 championship game, you will understand there is no one alive more dedicated to the Indiana Hoosiers than Angelo Pizzo. On this episode of #ThePlaybook, Rudy Ruettiger, motivational speaker and inspiration for the film Rudy, discusses:[4:51] Why getting inspired is a prerequisite for achieving your dreams and how he was inspired by the movie Rocky[8:29] How to better connect with others by practicing patience and refining your message[9:44] Why he didn’t let getting blown off by screenwriter Angelo Pizzo stop him from making the movie [16:25] How he handled being given 48 hours to secure approval from Notre Dame in order to make the movie
The year is 1993 and Sean Astin is 8 years away from playing the Hobbit Samwise Gamgee, so to fill the time and build his cred he stars in the feel-good football story about a dwarf named Rudy. Rudy is the story of a Daniel ‘Rudy’ Ruettiger who just wants to achieve his life long goal of playing football for Notre Dame - despite not having the size, ability, or intelligence to do so – but boy he sure does have the work ethic and ability to rub his success in the faces of all his doubters and anyone else who'll listen! Brought to you by director David Anspaugh and writer Angelo Pizzo, the same combo who 7 years earlier made Hoosiers, Rudy also features, Jon Favreau, Charles Dutton, Ned Beatty, and Vince Vaughn. Made for $12 million this underdog story brought home $22 million at the box office and received fairly positive critical reviews. But does it hold up? Listen in as Jon, Colin, and Brent shrink our expectations to find out if Rudy is the hero of the day and worthy of being carried off the field in victory, or this movie is in fact as depressing and far fetched as the Quasimodo getting to hang with Esmeralda in the Hunchback of Notre Dame.
Angelo Pizzo (Hoosiers, and Rudy), raised two blocks from The Indiana University Basketball Arena, loves sports, films, and creativity. He is working on three projects. The first is about the Maynard (Iowa) girls championship basketball team of 1957. Another is a coming of age romance set in The Civil War. The last is about fire horses in 19th century New York City, all trained to overcome their aversion to fire. The conversation includes writing for the stage, for film, and for radio, as well as his service as a board member of The Kinsey Institute.

In Celebration of the 25th ANNIVERSARY of the Movie RUDY, the film was presented on the big screen at the Microsoft Theatre in LA while the musical score was performed live by the Hollywood Orchestra. What you'll learn in this episode: The ins and outs of how Rudy went from Notre Dame to getting his movie developed. How Rudy learned to deal with rejection as an insurance salesman. Why inspiration is one critical to success, and how to begin developing this inspiration. How he needed to approach multiple people regarding his movie idea and face multiple rejections. What he did after Notre Dame declined his movie, and why Notre Dame was important to him. What Rudy's "insurance technique" is, and how it helped him successfully sell his ideas. Why Rudy had to use his faith to keep motivated during his journey. The long sequence of stops and starts that it took to eventually create his movie. Put on your favorite jersey and join the Roundtablers as we analyze the 1993 film Rudy. This film was written by Angelo Pizzo and directed by David Anspaugh. It’s based on the true story of Daniel Eugene "Rudy" Ruettiger, a walk on to the 1974-1975 Notre Dame Football team. Jarie feels it’s a great example of how to adapt a true life story. Each week one of the Story Grid Editors—Jarie Bolander, Valerie Francis, Anne Hawley, Kim Kessler, or Leslie Watts—pitches a favorite film as an example of a significant story principle. Then we team up to debate whether it succeeds or fails, giving authors deep insight into story structure. Click here for the full show notes.
This week, in honor of Austin Film Festival’s 25th Anniversary we’re going back into our archives to bring you conversations with writers that created two of 1993’s most remembered films. First we’ll hear from screenwriter Angelo Pizzo who wrote the inspirational football drama Rudy. And later, we’ll hear from Ron Nyswaner who wrote the Jonathan Demme directed drama Philadelphia, which starred Denzel Washington and Tom Hanks. 1993 saw the release of giant blockbuster films like Jurassic Park, classic comedies like Groundhog’s Day, Rom-Com staples like Sleepless in Seattle, and the inspirational true-life story of an undersized, dyslexic student who’s only dream was to play football for the University of Notre Dame. Rudy, written by Angelo Pizzo, has stood the test of time as a film that still resonates with an audience 25 years after its release. In 2005 the film was named one of the 25 Best Sports Movies by ESPN and one of the most-inspiring films of all time by the “AFI 100 Series”. Pizzo, who also wrote the Indiana basketball drama Hoosiers, spoke about Rudy at the 22nd Austin Film Festival in 2015. Clips of Rudy courtesy of TriStar Pictures, Inc. We continue our 25-year look back with a conversation with screenwriter Ron Nyswaner. In 1993, Nyswaner wrote Philadelphia, which follows an attorney who is fired from his high-powered law firm after it’s revealed that he is HIV positive. The film was one of the first mainstream Hollywood films to acknowledge HIV and homosexuality. Tom Hanks won an Academy Award® for Best actor for his portrayal of lawyer Andrew Beckett. Nyswaner is also known for adapting the W. Somerset Maugham novel The Painted Veil into the 2006 film of the same name. Nyswaner spoke about his career and writing process at the 20th annual Austin Film Festival in 2013. Clips of Philadelphia courtesy of TriStar Pictures, Inc. 30 years ago a little film about high school basketball in Indiana made it to the big screen. No one could have predicted the impact the movie “Hoosiers” would have on moviegoers to this day not even the two men responsible, Emmy award winning Director David Anspaugh and screenwriter/producer Angelo Pizzo. The 1986 classic went on to garner two Oscar nominations one for Dennis Hopper for Best Supporting Actor and for Best Original Score for composer Jerry Goldsmith. I traveled to Mr. Anspaugh’s lovely home for this comfortable conversation. Amongst his wonderful movie memorabilia we discuss how the end of Hoosiers could have been very different or not at all. Plus the cameo appearance of David Anspaugh in another of the duos great films "Rudy". We discuss the art of filmmaking from both David and Angelo’s point of view. Find out how the movie Hoosiers is still inspiring and influencing people today. (hint: Michael Phelps) And let’s not forget the revelation that Angelo Pizzo was once in the ballet! All in all the hour scratches the surface of a wonderful friendship and working relationship that has lasted some 50 years. I hope you enjoy this episode as much as I enjoyed bringing it to you! Please take a moment to fill out this quick survey. We'd be very grateful if you did.
