Desert Star by Michael Connelly. He's famous for a series of books with Harry Bosch as the central character; then started a second series with Renee Ballard, and then a spin off series with the two of them working together and this is one of those. She had left the force but been lured back with a brief to try and wrap up some cold cases, one of which was the murder of an entire family several years before which Bosch had never managed to crack and she persuades him to come back and work with her to give it another shot. Cult Trip by Anke Richter. She's a journalist who was exploring her own spirituality at a retreat in Byron Bay when she met a New Zealand woman who told her about her experiences at Centrepoint and set her off on a mission around the word to look at cults – why they exist, why people believe and stay there, the role of the inevitable gurus in charge and how so many people seem to get sucked in to these things, often giving not only all their money but giving up their freedoms as well. The first chapter in this book is all about Centrepoint and the last one Is about Gloriavale, and it's fascinating stuff – from someone who's been to the frontline of many of these organisations and about what really goes on inside them. Robert Anglen in conversation with Michael Connelly
American crime writer Michael Connelly is one of the world's bestselling authors, with more than eighty million copies of his books sold worldwide. He discusses his new novel Desert Star, the latest in his series about LAPD Detective Harry Bosch. Hazel Askew, Hannah James and Rowan Rheingans are accomplished, adventurous musicians. They come together as Lady Maisery, creating music informed by folk traditions that is contemporary, from a female perspective, socially and politically engaged. They talk to Tom Sutcliffe about their work, and perform songs from their new album, Tender. And are UK publishers afraid to publish books on controversial topics? Editor Arabella Pike and Dan Conway of The Publishers Association discuss whether publishing is experiencing a “chill factor.” Photo Credit: Kat Westerman

Desert Star School has introduced a new program at their preschool through 8th grade campus, called Project S.T.I.N.G. Through this program, students of all grade levels have the opportunity to participate in the new free, after-school program that is specifically focused and created for academic enrichment, youth development and family engagement.
Master teacher at Desert Star, Dr. Salahuddin, was the mastermind behind their school's campaign to submit and win for 2022 Frigo ® Cheese Heads ® “Build a Bright Future” program. But her message goes beyond just winning a national competition - it is to build a bright future with daily actions that make a difference in a child's life.
Since the start of the academic year, Desert Star has led a new vision with Project Y.E.S. - turning talents into possibilities. The program develops students to believe in themselves, work towards goals and take dreams off the shelf. Hard work is the key, but everything's possible. Starting with kindergartners through middle school, all students will participate in talent development and building thinking and problem-solving skills within their daily curriculum. The curriculum involved has been awarded for six consecutive years by the National Association for Gifted Children. Learn more in today's conversation.

Our conversation with Dr. Taylor and attorney Julie Gunnigle continues in Part 2 of Arizona SOS. With new Arizona state laws recognizing fetal personhood, a fetus is seen as having the same rights as any adult resident of the state, including the person who is pregnant with that fetus. A lawyer can be retained to represent the fetus and a pregnant person can be sued by a myriad of people if the pregnant person miscarries or seeks an abortion. Providers can also be prosecuted. This is not Margaret Atwood's novel, this is Arizona. If the U.S. Supreme Court overturns Roe v. Wade, what will happen to people who need help in a miscarriage situation or need to end a pregnancy? Who will provide care? #handsoffaz #access Learn more at: desertstarfp.org You can contribute a donation, or help share accurate information.
In part 1 of our conversation with Dr. DeShawn Taylor, Founder and President of Desert Star Institute for Family Planning, Inc., we learn ways to help support reproductive justice and abortion access in Arizona. Dr. Taylor has created a safe space for healthcare access, and her patients stand at risk if the harsh and unconstitutional bans signed by Arizona's Governor are enforced. Dr. Taylor is not only working to keep abortion accessible, but also to train the next generation of providers who can support all pregnant people, regardless of gender. These skills are not covered in most medical school programs. You can help make a difference. Stay tuned for Part 2 when Julie Gunnigle joins the conversation and we unpack the current political attacks on access in Arizona. He was an Interstellar Agent with a License to Kill Entire Worlds! A Golden Age Pulp Series by Nebula Nominee Ross Rocklynne! For the first time since their original appearance in the legendary pulp Planet Stories in the early 1940s, here are the three novelettes that launched the adventures of Sidney Hallmeyer, interstellar agent―one of the era's most trail-blazing series. In essence, Hallmeyer is a scientific secret agent with a license to kill―entire cultures and worlds! If needed or if so ordered, when they stand in the way of Earth's territorial expansion and dream of empire. In fact, it is utopias Hallmeyer is most often instructed to terminate―with prejudice. In "Exiles of the Desert Star," for instance, his assignment, as the original magazine blurb announced, is "Murder. Murder among the asteroids. Hallmeyer had orders to transform small Elron's brisk atmosphere to krypton. It meant killing that last gallant handful of royal exiles as surely as if his hand held a ray-gun." Hallmeyer's charm and saving grace, and the surest sign of his creator's penetrant insight, is his conscience. For unlike, say, James Bond, and long before him, Hallmeyer is aware of the dubious nature of his profession. The Hallmeyer series was clearly cut from such contrapuntal cloth that it is easy to understand why it made a big stir in the science fiction world of the time. Indeed, this two-volume audiobook is a major science fiction event. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app

Episode 304 of Folk Roots Radio features an interview with Julian Taylor, leader of self-described “pilgrims of funk, soul ‘n’ roll" - the Julian Taylor Band, recorded at the Folk Music Ontario conference. We also feature music from the band's great 2016 double album "Desert Star". And, as always, we take a look at some of the latest new releases. Check out the full playlist online at http://folkrootsradio.com.
My guest today is Julian Taylor, of the Julian Taylor Band. Julian has been a part of the Toronto music scene since the late 90s. In 2001, he enjoyed considerable success with his band Staggered Crossing, but unfortunately massive national and international success would elude them and they would finally break up in 2007. Fortunately, this talented artist could not be held at bay and soon was releasing new and exceptional material that would find its way onto radio, and tv and movie soundtracks. Now, in 2016, he has released an absolute gem in the album Desert Star which is gaining well deserved acclaim across Canada and south of the border. Some have said Julian Taylor represents “The Toronto Sound”, and if that’s the case, I think we have a lot to be proud of. Of note in this episode, it does occasionally contain some strong language and a couple of themes that are of an adult nature. Just giving you the heads up. The music for the podcast has been graciously provided by Toronto's own Modus Factor. The music is from their new album The Picasso Zone, which can be purchased on iTunes or at www.chrislesso.com. Previous episodes can be found on iTunes, Stitcher, Google Play Music, or else at our website, thisismytoronto.com. Thanks for listening, and remember: Don't let it get stuffy in here Toronto.
