This week, to celebrate the 100th episode of My Weekly Mixtape, I am creating The Ultimate Mixtape by asking 65 different people (previous My Weekly Mixtape guests, friends of the show & the amazing Patreon Mixtapers) the same question: If you had to choose one song for the ultimate mixtape (any song / any genre), that would be locked away in a time capsule for others to discover years or decades for now…which song would you choose and why? Now, I'm not lost on the fact that the question is just a spin on the “desert island song” question that a lot of my guests have been asked countless times. The twist for the next few episodes is: I am taking those 65 song choices (all of which are from various bands, artists, decades, genres and tempos), and curating them into what I hope will be a properly sequenced playlist from a musical perspective! At the very least? This was a fun & unique twist on a question as old as interviews themselves. But at its best? Congratulations, you're listening to The Ultimate Mixtape!! This ep. includes the final 25 responses! Be sure to also check out Volume's 1 & 2 to get the full experience! Guests appearing in Vol. 3 (in no particular order): Guy Fletcher of Dire Straits, Joe Bonamassa, Desmond Child, Ed Toth of The Doobie Brothers, Walter Trout, Todd Park Mohr of Big Head Todd & The Monsters, Nick Niespodziani & Peter Olson of Yacht Rock Revue, Billy Sheehan of Mr. Big, Kevin “Sonny” Gullage, Emily Wolfe, Jax Hollow, Sean Faust, Wolfgang Valbrun, Carrie Cunningham, Jesse Jackson of Set Lusting Bruce, Eric Senich of the Van Halen News Desk / Booked on Rock Podcast, Jessica Ann Catena of Music Notes With Jess, Bobby Schultz of Effin' Cultured, Mac Wolf of The Ugly American Werewolf In London Rock Podcast, Jason Whissell of It's Not That Bad & There Can Only Be One Podcasts, friends of the show Jimmy Mitchell & Bob Spear, two more incredible Patreon Mixtapers: David Lee Smith & Philip Bergman, and last (but certainly not least!) a guest appearance from Paul Williams! In the 2nd hour of today's show, we hit 4th and 1. Yacht Rock Revue lead singer Nick Niespodziani sits in studio. And the guys discuss the Sean Murphy injury.
In the first hour of today's show, the guys recap the Hawks buzzer beating win over the Grizzlies. Atlanta's own Yacht Rock Revue front man Nick Niespodziani joins to talk about the Yacht Rock experience.
A huge show with an interview of Nicholas Niespodziani from Yacht Rock Revue! The term "Yacht Rock" is turning out to be quite the hot button topic for audiophiles. With the release of the HBO doc Yacht Rock: A DOCKUMENTARY and Donald Fagan's white hot response to the idea, it has quickly become apparent that not everyone is in love with the term that has caused a massive resurgence in interest from LA-based soft rock bands from the mid 70s and 80s. Yacht Rock Revue has been at the head of that resurgence, riding the wave with musicianship and showmanship like no other. With a massive groundswell of their own, Nick and the YRR crew have not only collaborated with the artists they cover, but have even opened up for Kenny Loggins on tour. Now a music force in their own right, YRR has released two original albums "Hot Dads In Tight Jeans" and the recent "Escape Artist". In this episode we discuss whether the term "Yacht Rock" is offensive, a mild slight, or downright condescending. Nick offers a unique perspective from someone on the front lines, and shares stories from his experience leading arguably one of the most successful cover bands of all time. https://www.yachtrockrevue.com | Qobuz | Apple Music Don't forget to check out our merch for Season 11. Tonight I am on the couch with Keisha Jackson, the daughter of the sassy, legendary BOSS lady, Millie Jackson. I remember my parents playing Ms. Millie Jackson's albums and how defying her album covers were. When I learned that Keisha too is a singer and a BOSS, I had to talk to her. You know how they say, the apple doesn't fall far from the tree? Well, the apple doesn't fall far from the tree. Keisha Jackson is a BOSS lady like her mama. Keisha began singing professionally at age 15 as a background vocalist for her mother. She went on to record two albums with Sony Records and has contributed vocals on recordings with iconic artists like Aretha Franklin, Toni Braxton, Whitney Houston, Kaiser Chiefs, Erasure, Da Brat and others. She has toured with rap music icons Outkast, Erykah Badu, Angie Stone, George Clinton, Faith Evans, Raphael Saadiq, Yacht Rock Revue (current), and more. My biggest pull to Keisha is her love for mental health and wellness. She's also a certified life coach and a well-respected industry vocal coach. In her role as a vocal coach, she is counseling her clients and supporting their mental health journey, though she may not know it ;) She continues to manage her vocal coaching agency, One Voice Entertainment which she conceived in 2001. Join us on the couch as she shares her story and drops MANY gems. Throughout the summer, we are developing a brand new podcast with a new name and a new sound that will launch in late summer. In the meantime, we'll be revisiting some of our favorite shows from our first four years while still keeping you up-to-date on things to do in and around Atlanta. This week, we'll hear from some of the guys from the Atlanta musical phenomenon Yacht Rock Revue. It all started with a theme night back in 2007, when some local musicians turned a compilation of soft-rock hits into a set list at 10 High in the basement of the Dark Horse Tavern. But nobody on stage had any idea this was the genesis of what would become Yacht Rock Revue, and that 14 years later, seven of the musicians from that 10 High gig would play many of those same songs in front of 6,000 cheering fans at Cadence Bank Amphitheatre at Chastain Park (and they're playing there again this weekend, on Aug. 26 and 27). Rodney Ho has written about the band and he spoke with some of the band members about their unexpected career in late 2021. Find the conversation at ajc.com/podcasts and at the Apple Podcast store. The Girls tackle the complicated music genre known as Yacht Rock, and they are totally serious about it because it's very important. Amy cites a textbook definition of Yacht Rock from smoothradio.com, but Robbie-Ann immediately has a problem with it, and then announces her self-appointment as the World's Authority on Yacht or Nyacht, and all her rulings are final. The West Coast Yacht/Nyacht Judge, Robbie-Ann's childhood bestie Karen. The Girls explore a few examples, trying to narrow down how to define a Yacht Rock song. Examples from Supertramp and Boz Scaggs lead to a discussion of the Yacht Rock Spectrum. Which bands' entire catalogs are Yacht Rock? A guideline: can you stand at the BBQ grill and bob your head while you're grilling? Robbie-Ann rules that the yachtrock.com Yacht Rock rejections are not valid, and defends her decision. Amy and Robbie-Ann go into a deep dive of Player's "Baby Come Back." Robbie-Ann's simple qualifying question: would you play it on your yacht? A celebration of Michael McDonald's Yacht Rock-defining classic "What A Fool Believes." Sidebar on Amy's childhood barbecues with pet snakes and beers. The nostalgia factor in Yacht or Nyacht. Robbie-Ann's controversial Yacht Rock ruling on Michael Jackson's "Human Nature." Little River Band: their entire catalog's Yacht ruling. Robbie-Ann offers to fight anyone who denies Toto's Yacht Rock status. Why "Pina Coladas (the Escape Song)" is a Yacht Rock absolute. The Yacht Rock "Vibe." Amy asks Robbie-Ann what the number one, quintessential Yacht Rock song is and she makes a ruling, and sings the praises of Christopher Cross. Robbie-Ann's impression of Michael McDonald's background bad-ah-dah-dahs. Kenny Loggins: which of his songs are Yacht or Nyacht? Robbie-Ann's difficult decision on "Your Mama Don't Dance." Amy tries to dissent. Robbie-Ann's ruling on the very first Yacht Rock song, the very birth of the Yacht Rock genre: hint, it was released 1973. Amy's analysis of the Yacht Rock Listener. Yacht Rock cover bands, including California's Yachtley Crew and Atlanta's Yacht Rock Revue. What is "Yacht Rock Adjacent?" Robbie-Ann explains. The "Soothing" factor. Why Marvin Gaye's classic "What's Going On" is Nyacht. Amy's insightful analysis of why Yacht Rock is necessary, and was the music more important than the lyrics? Ambrosia, and David Pack's insane voice. A very important Yacht/Nyacht ruling on Hall and Oates. Why is Yacht Rock sampled so much in Hip Hop and Rap music? Robbie-Ann's final Yacht/Rock ruling on Bruce Hornsby, and why (no political songs!).Yacht or Nyacht? Foreigner. The Eagles. Chicago. Fleetwood Mac. Kids aren't on the Yacht!

What's it like being the frontman for the most popular cover band working today? Does it provide a nice life? Is it artistically fulfilling? These are some of the questions discussed with Nick Niespodziani, lead singer for the mighty Yacht Rock Revue. Nick discusses how a mid-life crisis birthed their new album of original, yachty, material called Hot Dads in Tight Jeans and how his band's success has eclipsed some of the bands they cover! We also countdown his top 5 yacht rock songs, and discuss how the quarantine is impacting them from rockin' and yachtin'. Nick comes from a unique segment of the music business and it's interesting hearing his perspective. Enjoy! www.yachtrockrevue.com www.patreon.com/thehustlepod

Today we’re going to spotlight Andrew Rodbell, of Post Meridiem Spirits. We spoke with Andrew pretty recently, back in January. He told us all about that fateful Yacht Rock Revue concert and how Post Meridiem came to be. Launching business just as COVID-19 swung through seems to be a trend over here, but Post Meridiem has been able to grow through this struggle. Now, they’re in need of your help to continue that growth. Post Meridiem cocktails are currently available at your local liquor retailer across Florida, Georgia and South Carolina. The good folks at Post Meridiem have asked us to ask y’all to please support your local liquor store. Through purchasing their products at a local store not only are you helping out PM, you’re helping another local business as well! We've launched a new component to our LIFT ATL 2020 campaign; a GoFundMe to help the businesses that have been on our show. For every $500 raised, we will donate that to a small business. Head to gofundme.com to donate! If you know of a small business in need of help at this time, please share their story with us! Use the hashtag #LIFTATL2020. We are building a database of social media posts, graphics, and audio clips for you to download, share and use how you see fit. We hope all of you will latch on to this cause and share the needs of those in our community. For more information visit liftatl2020.com.

Just what is "yacht rock," you ask? Is it AM gold? Soft, smooth 70s hits, come back to life? Perhaps the easiest description is music that would not sound out of place being played while carousing aboard a yacht back in "the good old days." Unsure if you've heard "yacht rock?" Well...if you've heard anything featuring Michael McDonald or members of Toto, you have! Author Greg Prato takes us through its birth in the early 70s (Seals & Croft, The Eagles, Steely Dan), its second act later in that decade (Player, Pablo Cruise, Firefall), as well as its current revival, which includes touring outfit The Yacht Rock Revue.

What started as a tribute to the greats, has taken on a life all of its own. Yacht Rock Revue harnesses the nostalgic soft rock vibes of the ‘70s and ‘80s, taking the term “tribute band” to a whole new level. Whether on the road, or at their own venue Venkman's in Atlanta, Yacht Rock Revue take their audiences on a voyage to sounds of the past. Singer Nick Niespodziani joined On Second Thought to add a couple of songs to the Georgia Playlist , our tribute to songs written and performed by Georgians. Niespodziani chose “Moonlight Feels Right” by Starbuck and Washed Out's “Eyes Be Closed.”

Every year professional musicians brace themselves from April to October. That six to seven month span encompasses outdoor gig season. In this episode we welcome David Freeman, saxophonist/keyboardist of the Yacht Rock Revue, to the show. He's a long time, power listener and part time drummer. In his decades of performance experience Dave has had hundreds of performances during shed season. Aside from giving our personal stories about perfect outdoor gigs versus nightmare outdoor gigs Phil and Dave give a host of practical tips that will prepare you for anything that comes your way. We spend some time talking about listing and packing specialized equipment that will protect your gear and survive the rigors of the elements. In particular we talk about several different ways to protect your electronics from rain, humidity, and moisture. We give tips about self-preservation including different items to bring for personal comfort (insect repellent, sun block, cooling towels, etc.). We then cover the best and lightest ways to load and transport gear to keep you as fresh as possible during times of oppressive heat. If you have ever considered contracting outdoor events there are many aspects that differ from traditional, indoor gigs. Dave and Phil run through a list of requests that are mandatory when considering an outdoor gig. We cover everything from staging, to food and beverage needs, to case storage and miscellaneous rider inclusions. Finally we give you practical, on-the-job tips that can make a potentially bad situation tolerable if not enjoyable! Don't forget that the Drummer's Weekly Groovecast is looking for an intern. We need someone who is well versed in web site design, SEO, social media, promotion and creative writing.
