The national competition celebrates outstanding student performances in high school musical productions from all over the United States. Shortly after the DPAC Rising Star Awards, I had the great pleasure of going backstage to interview both of this year's winners, Alex Fluker of Panther Creek High School and Conor Kruger of Enloe High School. The two of them discuss their experiences with this year's competition, their excitement for the Jimmy Awards, and more. Back in 2016, the national tour of THE LION KING played a month-long engagement at the Durham Performing Arts Center in Durham, North Carolina. Prior to that, I was able to interview actor Ben Lipitz for BroadwayWorld by phone. At the time, he was in the show as Pumbaa, a part he played for more than 6,000 performances through both the tour and Broadway productions. Ben recently passed away on April 18th at the age of 58. So what I decided to do is share with all of you the aforementioned interview. I've also included a snippet from a conversation I had with the tour's head carpenter at the time, Billy Kimbley, as the show was loading into DPAC a few days before the run began. Ben Lipitz's previous stage credits included RED, HOT, AND BLUE (Goodspeed Opera, Papermill Playhouse); JUST SO (Goodspeed Opera); ART; DIRTY BLONDE; LAUGHTER ON THE 23RD FLOOR; A FUNNY THING HAPPENED ON THE WAY TO THE FORUM; Cleveland Playhouse, Kennedy Center, Walnut St. Theatre. TV: THE SOPRANOS, LAW & ORDER, 100 CENTRE ST., HOMICIDE. Film: THE GIRAFFE and FIND ME GUILTY (directed by Sidney Lumet). *I do not own any of the content used in this podcast. This week, WRAL lifestyle editor Kathy Hanrahan is joined by Mix 101.5 FM's Diane Ramsey for a special episode featuring two major Broadway shows coming to Durham Performing Arts Center this season - Moulin Rouge and Six!
In the middle of the day in a popular shopping area in Durham two men were shot at on the sidewalk. The car crashed in front of the Aloft Hotel. It happened on Blackwell Street at the American Tobacco campus near the Durham Performing Arts Center and the Durham Bulls Athletic Park. WRAL's Chelsea Donovan has been covering this developing story and joins us with what she's learned so far. Our host checks in with us this week from home and he's pissed off because so much money was wasted on this year's elections. It's ludicrous how nothing gets done and nothing new gets said every election cycle. Here's an idea…if you have a political ad on TV, and you don't bring up one new point or say something of note, that's it you're out. You're done. Ten billion dollars spent..on nothing! The Washington Commanders are currently being sold for around five billion. This year's election cycle makes that seem like a bargain. Also, climate change is in full swing. Lewis went to bed Saturday night and it was 70 degrees. He woke up Sunday morning and it was 40 degrees outside. We're going to hell in a hand basket and nothing is going to change. How come no one wants to work a public service job anymore? When our host was a kid, there were so many people who wanted a public service job. Lewis just got home from shows in Ohio and North Carolina. Marietta, Ohio is a really nice small town. Durham, North Carolina has really changed a lot (for the better) since our host used to spend time there in his younger days. Durham, Raleigh and Chapel Hill are really great food towns. All the shows from this past weekend were truly amazing. Our host thanks you for all the support over the years as the world becomes more psychotic and we all continue to struggle with it. As always, the most important thing we can do for one another is to take care of each other. Back in 2017, the national tour of HEDWIG & THE ANGRY INCH was making its way to the Durham Performing Arts Center in Durham, North Carolina. Prior to that, I was able to get in touch with the star of the show, Euan Morton. He originated the role of Boy George in the musical TABOO in London's West End (which earned him an Olivier Award nomination) and in New York (which earned him a Tony Award nomination). In addition, he received a Theatre World Award for Outstanding Broadway Debut. Additional main stem credits include CYRANO DE BERGERAC and SONDHEIM ON SONDHEIM. He has numerous Off-Broadway and regional credits, including a production of MEASURE FOR PLEASURE at the Public Theatre that earned him an Obie Award, and PARADE at the Ford's Theatre as Leo Frank, for which he won a Helen Hayes Award. Euan also has an active concert career. He's released two solo albums and has had the pleasure of singing in many of the best concert venues around the country. Currently, he can be seen as KING GEORGE III in the Broadway production of HAMILTON. You may also know his son, Iain Armitage, from his roles on different TV shows such as BIG LITTLE LIES and YOUNG SHELDON. *I do not own any of the content used in this podcast. Back in 2015, the national tour of KINKY BOOTS was on its way to Durham, North Carolina for a one week run at the Durham Performing Arts Center. For BroadwayWorld, I was able to interview its Lola at the time, J. Harrison Ghee, who happens to be a native of North Carolina. Since the interview took place, Ghee went on to do several stints as Lola in the New York production. In fact, he most recently participated in a workshop for a brand new stage musical adaptation of Billy Wilder's classic 1959 comedy, SOME LIKE IT HOT, taking on the role of Jerry, which in the movie earned Jack Lemmon an Oscar nomination for Best Actor. Ghee can currently be seen on Broadway as Andre in MRS. DOUBTFIRE, which recently resumed performances following a three-month hiatus. Follow J. Laurel Harris is an actress and native of Raleigh, North Carolina who I was lucky enough to have seen on stage twice before in the Triangle area back in 2015. First, as Elphaba in the national tour of WICKED at the Durham Performing Arts Center. Then, as The Baker’s Wife in North Carolina Theatre’s production of INTO THE WOODS. On Broadway, she has appeared in EVITA, IN TRANSIT, and BEAUTIFUL: THE CAROLE KING MUSICAL. Though most recently, she was seen in the ensemble of the now Tony nominated musical, JAGGED LITTLE PILL. From December 11th-22nd, Theatre in the Park will be presenting their 45th anniversary production of A CHRISTMAS CAROL. I recently had the great pleasure of interviewing the show's playwright, Ira David Wood III, who is not only back directing this year, but he’ll also be alternating the role of Ebenezer Scrooge with his oldest son, Ira David Wood IV. Ira David Wood III is the Founder & Executive Director of Theatre In The Park, which happens to be North Carolina’s largest community theatre with an international reputation. David is also best known and loved for annually portraying the miserly Ebenezer Scrooge in his own stage musical adaptation of the Charles Dickens classic, A CHRISTMAS CAROL, which is getting ready to put on its 45th anniversary production this month. The show has been performed annually since 1974 and has been named one of the "Top 20 Events in the Southeast" as well as "one of the most successful shows in North Carolina theatre history." Be sure to catch Theatre in the Park’s 2019 production of A CHRISTMAS CAROL. Today we are taking a field trip to the Country Music Hall of Fame in Nashville, Tennessee. This place, this shrine of music, is so much more than cowboy boots and Cadillacs. It’s a tribute to all the jazz, blues and bluegrass artists, who are interwoven into country music’s origin story. And nestled in the 5th Avenue lobby of this incredible building, is another not-to-be-missed hidden gem called Hatch Show Print, a historic letterpress print shop that is as much a part of Americana as country music itself. So why talk about Hatch here on this podcast? Well, it turns out that there’s a thread of southern hospitality that ties this small print shop in the heart of Nashville to our very own Durham Performing Arts Center. About the Guest Celene Aubry is the Associate Director at Hatch Show Print, one of America’s oldest surviving letterpress show poster and design shops. In addition to overseeing the staff and operation of a vibrant 140 year old letterpress print shop, Aubry is also guiding the development of additional Hatch Show Print programs and activities that leverage a classroom and gallery—two spaces that are still relatively new to the shop—while still carrying on the shop’s tradition of preservation through production, making posters for the customers whenever time allows. And, when the day’s work is done, Celene enjoys pursuing her quest to bring together the two outmoded processes of letterpress printmaking and hand-printed photographs.
