This year, Davine Productions turns 10 years old and is celebrating with a production of the musical, A New Brain. The brain, heart, and sould behind Davine Productions is David Gauci, and he's our guest today. The SA Drink Of The Week in from Yalumba - The Signature. This is partly because the wine is superb but also because Yalumba has long been a supporter of Davine Productions. And we'll be joined in the tasting by winemaker, Kevin Glastonbury. And in the Musical Pilgrimage, Kaurna Cronin has a new song out and it's made itself into an ear worm, competing with the soundtrack of A New Brain! Oh, and here's our index of all episode in one concisepage Running Sheet: Davine Intervention In Adelaide Theatre00:00:00 Intro Introduction 00:03:09 SA Drink Of The Week 2019 Yalumba The Signature. One of the signaturies of the 49th vintage of The Signature, is red winemaker at Yalumba, Kevin Glastonbury. He sits down to taste the wine with Steve Davis, as part of Yalumba's ongoing support of the arts through Davine Productions. 00:41:29 David Gauci, Davine Productions In 2013, the same year The Adelaide Show began, David Gauci put his roots down in Adelaide and started the theatre company, Davine Productions. Prior to this and alongside this, he has had a 25+ year career in professional theatre, as well as being a teacher to countless performers in a number of colleges and institutions including the University of Adelaide Elder Conservatorium. At the time of recording, in October 2023, Davine's about to open a production of A New Brain. This is a delightfully quirky musical that twists left and right in surprising ways and bestows upon us such unexpected rhymes like: If you make me cry, Then I'll probably have to kill you, I will you,  know. Learn more about Davine Productions and get tickets here. October 13-21, 2023, Star Theatres, Sir Donald Bradman Drive. David, we'll come back to A New Brain but while we're on the topic of lyrics, do you have some favourite ones from the show? I almost tripped over on the beach today when I heard the lyric in the "children's" song that went:Or when someone says,“Would you like to lose your virginity?”Someone with who you haveNo affinity We just celebrated 10 years of The Adelaide Show and its reason for existance which was, initially, to fight the lazy way people used to use Adelaide as the butt of jokes for being boring. And yet, there you were, also in 2013, launching a not-for-profit, non-professional theatre company in Adelaide, with exceedingly high standards and backed by the likes of a broadway composer, a former director of the Sydney Theatre Company, a former head of acting at NIDA, and a much-loved national celebrity with multiple logies to his name. Can you share with us the moment when Davine Productions materialised and the importance of it being in Adelaide? How do you maintain the high standard of excellence that Davine Productions is known for because in a professional company you have a big stick - you can dock someone's pay or fire them. But in community theatre, we all need each other. What's your secret? There is much said about humans becoming more selfish and closed these days, so over the past 10 years, has that impact shifted your approach to finding humans who are willing to "give it their all" for the love of performing, when it's tempting to stay home and coccoon? I've seen (and reviewed) a couple of your shows - Beautiful, The Carole King Musical, and Summer Of 69 - how do you go about selecting shows for Davine Productions? What do you look for? What is the message or feeling you want the audience to walk away with from a Davine Productions show? On the Adelaide Show, we've previously discussed the profound impact that teachers can have on us (especially in episode 291 in which my daughter, AJ, interviews two important teachers in her life, Kaye and Jenny), so, I'm curious to know which of the three teachers during your primary years had the greatest impact: Sr Carmel with her piano lessons and theory, Mrs Mulvahill with her elocution lessons, or Mrs Tilley and her singing lessons? How does your role as a teacher at the University of Adelaide Elder Conservatorium influence your work at Davine Productions? Davine is, of course, the feminine of David but it also means Beloved. That makes it a great name for a theatre company. But it also sounds a little like Divine. I'd love to learn more about your adventure at a seminary, studying theology. Why did you do it, what made you leave? David, it's fair to say you and I both love musical theatre but what's your definition of what is "good" musical theatre? I love Les Mis, My Fair Lady, Urine Town, The Producers, Superstar, Fiddler On The Roof, anything by Stephen Sondheim, but despise Phantom Of The Opera. There's a delicate balance in the recipe - nourishing melodies, clever word play, a story line that primes us for emotion or farce or both. Do you agree? Your new production is, A New Brain, with music and lyrics by William Finn, inspired by Finn's own experience with an arteriovenous malformation and the healing power of art. Can you set it up for us? 01:37:44 Musical Pilgrimage Our featured song this episode is Eraser by Kaurna Cronin. Eraser is a great concept for a song, when someone is the ink unto your paper. Try as you like, you can't erase them. It just shows Kaurna is still on form and there are many comments in his online places of people saying the song is now stuck in their heads. David, is that the sign of a great song - generally, let alone in musical theatre?Support the show: https://theadelaideshow.com.au/listen-or-download-the-podcast/adelaide-in-crowd/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

RNIB Connect Radio's Toby Davey is joined again by Vidar Hjardeng MBE, Inclusion and Diversity Consultant for ITV News across England, Wales, Northern Ireland and the Channel Islands for the next in his regular Connect Radio audio described theatre reviews. This week Vidar was reviewing the audio described performance of Beautiful - The Carole King Musical  at the Birmingham Hippodrome  Theatre on Saturday 3 September at 2.30pm with audio description by professional Describers Julia Grundy and Jonathan Nash. Long before she was Carole King, the chart-topping music legend, she was an ordinary girl with an extraordinary talent. Beautiful tells the inspiring true story of King's remarkable rise to stardom, from being part of a hit songwriting team with her husband Gerry Goffin, to her relationship with fellow writers and best friends Cynthia Weil and Barry Mann, to becoming one of the most successful solo acts in popular music history. Along the way, she wrote the soundtrack to a generation, with countless classics such as (You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman, Take Good Care of My Baby, You've Got a Friend, So Far Away, It Might as Well Rain Until September, Up on the Roof, and The Locomotion. Vidar began by telling Toby that although this was the second time he had seen Beautiful - The Carole King Musical, he was struck by how many tunes Carole King had written that had become both hits for her and for other artists, how he felt there was a good balance between Carole King's story and her hits in this new production and how much the audio description by Julia and Jonathan enhanced his enjoyment of the show.  Beautiful - The Carole King Musical continues on tour around the UK and more details can be found by visiting the following website -https://beautifulmusical.co.uk/tour/ (Image shows RNIB logo. Welcome back to another week of Stage Door Medium! This week, I’m joined by the incomparable Chilina Kennedy. Chilina made her Broadway debut in the Stratford Festival transfer production of Jesus Christ Superstar, and from there was handpicked by Carole King to succeed Jessie Mueller in Beautiful, The Carole King Musical. Most recently, Chilina originated the role of Dina on the national tour of The Band’s Visit. This week, we discuss sensing vibrations (For Chilina, it started in the womb as she’d rock out to her mom playing guitar while pregnant), as well as why meditation can happen anywhere and shouldn’t be as formalized as people think it is. Chilina also shares a profound piece of advice from her mother on the benefits of staying open to different types of faith and religious practices. Chilina and I also discuss the topic of psychometry (the ability to read energy from objects) and her amazing story about identifying the piano of her late piano teacher in a theatre years after having played it! Psychometry is also one of the reasons why I’d never try to do a reading inside an antique store. Too much energy! As usual, we discuss Chilina’s reading, why it’s important to go into a reading open to the agenda of Spirit versus ours, and how we will always receive the messages we need to hear.To close, Chilina tells us all about the Eclipse Theatre Company she founded in Toronto, their genius production of The Kiss of the Spiderwoman, and why immersive story-telling is a reminder that theatre will never die. To watch the video version of this episode, click here. Chloé Zuel is a singer and performer who has worked as a lead singer across Australia and Internationally including two years at Universal Studios Japan and three months at The Venetian, Macao. She was most recently seen as Anita in West Side Story, and as Sarah in Ragtime. Chloé’s other various credits include the Australian premier production of Beautiful; The Carole King Musical, Hairspray, Legally Blonde the Musical, The Mikado, Les Misérables, Rent, the Australian tour of Little Shop of Horrors and Porgy and Bess. She is currently part of the original Australian cast of SIX the Musical as Catherine of Aragon.  Born and raised in Sydney, Australia, Chloé’s mother had her when she was young, and up until she was 8 years old it was just the two of them. Chloé speaks of her mother with awe and appreciation, as she single handedly supported her early performing arts dreams. She started taking dance classes at age 5, competed regularly in dance competitions, and began singing when she was 12 years old. Chloé calls herself that kid who put all her eggs into one basket - it was always clear in her mind that performing was all she wanted to do. She shares that she used to put on a CD every night and would fall asleep to music. Chloé went on to study and graduate from ED5 International, Australia’s premiere Performing Arts Training Facility, and has been lucky enough to be working steadily ever since.  Chloé opens up to us about living with terrible anxiety as a performer. For a little while she wasn’t sure she wanted to continue performing - she forgot why she loved it and why she did it. She says, “When you have anxiety, performing everyday, performing every moment” can be hell. She recalls having panic attacks in the wings during performances of Beautiful: The Carole King Musical. As someone who struggles with anxiety, she tells us that she found the audition process for SIX really difficult, as a lot of it required singing, dancing and performing in front of everyone else who was also auditioning. But also shares that from the get go - from auditions - the environment created was always one which was about supporting each other, cheering each other on; about being unique, and appreciating everyone else’s unique qualities. She recalls getting butterflies at their initial launch for SIX, realizing what a special project she was now a part of. And now they are a family. Chloé shares, “There’s a really deep love and respect that we have for each other, and an understanding”. In this episode, we talk about: Her whirlwind journey from West Side Story, into Ragtime, into getting married, back to West Side Story to close it out, and starting SIX rehearsals the next morning  Why she and her husband decided to spend this time in Tasmania  Why she loves performing, and what she feels she gets from it’s magic  Her experience with the other queens on launch day for SIX in Australia  How her anxiety has affected her performing  Her admiration for the writers of SIX, and why she finds it so clever  Her peanut butter addiction Connect with Chloé: IG: @chloezuel Twitter: @chloezuel Connect with The Theatre Podcast: Support us on Patreon: Patreon.com/TheTheatrePodcast Twitter & Instagram: @theatre_podcast Facebook.com/OfficialTheatrePodcast TheTheatrePodcast.com Alan's personal Instagram: @alanseales Email me at feedback@thetheatrepodcast.com. Carole King is one of the great pop songwriters of the 1960s and '70s. Now, her songs — from early novelties such as “Who Put the Bomp” to intimate, soulful compositions such as “So Far Away” and “A Natural Woman” — are on Broadway in the biographical show Beautiful: the Carole King Musical. The show, at the Stephen Sondheim Theatre, stars Jessie Mueller as King, and features a book by Doug McGrath. The director is Marc Bruni. King’s personal story — she started out as Carole Klein from Brooklyn — is told with her songs as signposts along the journey. New York Times theater critic Charles Isherwood lets us know whether that journey is worth an evening in the theater.
